Curriculum overview
Broaden your horizons with the various programme available for students to explore new lands.
You can get the opportunity to study, conduct research, or work in another country. Below details
some of our students’ experiences.
Visiting the Colosseum in the
center of Rome, Italy
Participating in Lund Colour
Run with friends
“Living in a new city opens
up a myriad of opportunities,
with me doing many previous
impossibles. Going to Madrid
for exchange afforded me
fun memories, and made
me grow as an individual.
Exchange life brought ‘expect
the unexpected’ to a whole
new level for me.”
“The exchange life in Lund
University not only provided
with a great opportunity to
study and work alongside
elites from all over the world,
but also to experience firsthand an entirely different
educational culture in
Sweden.”
- Pan Yuehao (Year 4, IEM)
- Fang Lina (Year 3, IEM)
Lam Bhan
Class of 2013
(PhD Student, School of EEE, NTU)
“IEM’s rigorous cross-platform curriculum has
cultivated a polymath in me, allowing me to
use varying perspectives to look at an issue,
then drawing on the necessary knowledge
from different fields to work on it. I would say
that an IEM graduate is immediately relevant
to current and future technology trends such
as Internet of Things (IoT) and 3D printing.”
Splashing around at the
Boryeong Mud Festival
with friends
“Experiencing another
culture helped me develop
a sense of independence
and also resulted in lasting
friendships. It was definitely
an experience of a lifetime,
where I was able to grow
both academically and as an
individual, in such a fun way.”
- Vanessa Li (Year 4, IEM)
Liu Tong
Class of 2014
(Technology Management Associate,
Citibank)
“IEM has trained me to be a creative and fast
learning individual, which has enormously
benefited me in my career. If you like to
experience different roles and challenges
in NTU, IEM is definitely the right choice for
you!”
Enjoying the Sakura Festival
at Kakunodate
“My exchange in Japan was
one of the happiest and most
memorable experiences
during my time in university.
Not only was I able to
experience a different culture
first-hand, but I was also
given the opportunity to look
at the world and myself from
a different perspective.”
- Li Ruixue (Year 5, IEM
and Econs double degree
programme)
Touring Paris on a bike,
visiting famous landmarks
with friends
“It was an exciting
experience studying abroad
in a very different and unique
learning environment. From
this, I gained a different and
more comprehensive insight
into another country and its
culture.”
- Iffri Husairi Bin Ismail
(Year 4, IEM)
Lim Shiyun
Class of 2013
(Product Designer, Zopim Technologies)
“The rigour and multidisciplinary approach
experienced at IEM, has taught me to be
adaptable, enabling me to pick up new
skills on the fly. All in all, IEM has not only
opened the doors to a much wider range
of career options, but has also better
prepared for life after graduation.”
Having a French class outing
with tutors
“Exchange in INSA Lyon
started my journey in Europe,
leaving me a lifetime memory
of an exotic culture. Learning
in INSA took on various
forms, many of which differs
from here in NTU, opening
up my mind to a different
style of learning, one which I
have to say is extremely fun.”
- Li Weini
(Class of 2014, IEM)
Wong Zhi Xiang
Class of 2011
(Engineer (InfoComm Infrastructure),
Defence Science and Technology Agency)
“The IEM programme has not only provided
with technical foundation and skills for my
career, but has also challenged to develop
my soft skills such as to think innovatively,
communicate effectively and manage
relationships well. Both types of skills have
been invaluable to me in my profession as a
defense IT engineer.”

– Leonardo da Vinci
The Undergraduate Experience – As an IEM student, you will undertake a holistic
curriculum spanning across engineering, art and media courses to prepare you for a
seamless entry into the thriving infocomm media industry.
Leonardo da Vinci was a leading artist
and an intellect of the Italian Renaissance.
He has been called a genius and the
archetypal Renaissance man. His talents
unarguably extended far beyond his artistic
works. Like many leaders of Renaissance
humanism, he did not see a divide between
science and art.
Curriculum Overview – Engineering-related courses consisting of programming,
computing, communications and networking, and digital audio/image/video
processing, constitutes 60% of the curriculum.
In addition, you will also gain broad overview of the artistic and creative aspects of
the media industry. This 20% of the curriculum comprises of courses such as digital
art and design, animation and game design and radio/TV/movie production.

“These four years in the IEM programme have taught me to embrace the rigours of
engineering and to also appreciate the subtleties of the arts. The emphasis and fusion of
technical competency with creative dexterity is only found here at IEM. The IEM programme
has inspired me to constantly seek new perspectives as well as the necessary skill sets,
derived from the multi-disciplinary curriculum at IEM, to approach problems in engineering.”

“In today’s digital world, the focus on technological development has moved beyond pure
functionality towards aesthetics and consumer experience. At IEM, I gained experience in
both technical and creative processes required to develop such technological and media
products. The multidisciplinary nature of IEM’s programme has also opened my mind
to ideas and solutions that transcend different fields. Most importantly, I enjoyed myself
tremendously at IEM, having had the privilege of learning so much, across various fields,
all under one roof.”

“The unique IEM experience of switching between rigorous engineering logic and
artistic thinking has prepared me well for the challenging work required of me in the
film industry. The IEM program married solid engineering background with the creative
and innovative mindset from design thinking, which allows me to understand issues in
a more holistic way.”
