The Simi Valley Flyers club is incorporated as a
nonprofit organization. We are a radio control model
airplane club founded in 1965. We have a 450 ft. by 50
ft. asphalt runway with a 150 ft. by 65 ft. pit area. Our
flying field is located inside Oak Park which is owned by
the County of Ventura. The Simi Valley Flyers operate,
maintain and improve this facility under a lease
agreement with Ventura County.
All inputs to the Newsletter must be sent in by the 18th

On the field maintenance front we would like to have a
work party prior to the event. Some items that we
would like to take care of during the work party would
include mowing and edging the weeds, trimming the
trees and cleaning of the pits. As we get closer to the
event we will post the day we would like to hold the
work party. Thank you in advance for participating.
We plan to have the road repaired prior to our June
20th event and will be contacting the county of our
need.
Please join us for the monthly meeting to share your
ideas and input about what you would like to see as
a club and as always please bring show and tell.

As a reminder we would like some input on the 50th
anniversary logo. Once we have an agreement on a
logo we will place an order based on preorders. The
celebration of our anniversary will include the June 20
Fun Fly Swap meet event. The event will include a free
BBQ, with vendors, flight simulators, and trainers
on hand. We will be have the event published in the
newspapers calendar section to invite the
Community to celebrate with us.

Vote on Glen Roe as club secretary approved by the club unanimously
Vote on $275 donation to church for 2015 meeting space approved by the club unanimously.
Todd suggested to the club that we try a general meeting at the Simi Valley Town Center sometime later
this year. Some discussion took place and there were no objections.
Todd discussed our 50th anniversary celebration this year. The current proposal is that the April Fun Fly
and BBQ should be free and invite the general to the public.
• Possible advertisement of the event in the Simi Valley Acorn.
• Discussed having trainer boxes/planes and simulators available for the public
• Discussed ordering 50th anniversary club logo apparel. 10+ members in attendance showed interest in
ordering.
Todd thanks Keith and Deter for replacing the flags recently.
Todd thanked Bill Stullick for donating pavers for the BBQ area. Target to complete work before the April
Fun Fly. Several volunteered to pick up the pavers at 1P on Sunday 1/25/15.
Todd brought up the condition of the road. The club is going to get a quote to get it fixed, and is currently
planned for a May timeline to be completed. It was discussed that maybe it may need to be addressed
before the first Fun Fly.
Andy did not have the exact count of members available because of all of the last minute payments coming
in for the drawing later in the meeting. Number is approximately 109 members.
Bill Prosser had no safety incidents to report.
Bill Prosser reminded the club of various safety rules, including taking the shovels and fire extinguishers
out before flying.
Bob gave the treasurer report: The club treasury is currently at $20442.02.
Holiday party costs were reported as $1263. Holiday party income was reported as $936 with a net cost to
the club as $327.
Holiday party raffle cost $750 with income of $405.
•Net cost of everything holiday party related to the club was $672.
Bob discussed the upcoming drawing tonight for a refund on this year’s members and reminded those who
have not paid their 2015 dues to pay at the break.
Bill Luckie mentioned that he has been in touch with Jack Fase about donating money for the flags. Bob
and Bill to contact Jack and get the flags ordered.
Bill Luckie discussed members sending photos to publish on the SVF Facebook page. Sean and Bill both
have the ability to publish photos.

Todd discussed a concern that the locks to the field are being closed, but not actually locked. Club
members need to be sure they are tugged and ensure they are properly locked.
Ron Scott brought up the Condor field. The contract expired and was renewed for 3 months, but for only
flying on Saturday.
Glen Roe (Sr.) brought up that DSM2 is no longer sold in Europe as of 1/1/15.

Rumor has it that this year at the Wings Over
Camarillo that there will be a level III MV-22 Osprey
Flight Demonstration. In addition to that they are
expecting (2) C-130s, an E-2C, (2) Marine Hueys,
plus the usual C-47 and C-53, Clay Lacy's DC-3, and
maybe a PBY Catalina. Plan on being there August
22nd and 23rd.

Tips on Buying Stuff at RC Swapmeets
When you go to a “swap meet”/garage sale/or flee market, you can find some real deals or some real junk or anything inbetween. One of the questions I always ask myself when at the swap meet is “why is this person trying to sell certain
items??” Also, is this stuff stolen or is this person really in need of $$$$. Whatever the case, you need to be careful or you
may get stung. The following are some tips that I use in wheeling and dealing. I hope you find them useful.
1) Don’t pick up or handle anything unless you ask the price first. If you do pick up an item, the seller will probably up
the price depending on how interested or excited you appear. It’s a psychology game and you need to be a good
negotiator. If the price seems reasonable, then, pick it up and inspect it.
2) Inspection:
- Carefully inspect the item looking for good and bad points.
- Anything electrical, smell it – it may be burned internally and not obvious by looking at it.
- Look for repaired areas – and how well the repairs were done. Example: If the alignment of the repaired
sections was slightly off, the item may never function as it originally did.
- Kits – check to see that all the parts are there – Cowl, wheels, elevator, rudder, etc.
- Engines:
A) Is it free to rotate and are there any rough spots as it rotates – this may indicate rusted or broken bearings.
B) Is the crankshaft bent - as it rotates does it wobble or appear straight.
C) Does it have good compression – as it rotates, it should be hard to turn as it approaches “TDC”.
D) Are there any obvious broken parts that may need replacing?
3) Haggling over the price. This is a real ART. If you’re a millionaire, it won’t matter that much but if you’re like me
(and I am a real cheapskate) cost matters a lot. My rule of thumb, depending on the items condition is “don’t pay more
than 50 – 60% of the original cost of the item.
Try to get the seller to give you a price first. If it’s way too high, just walk away – you can always come back but there
is a risk of the item being sold. If the asking price is reasonable, then look more closely at it – pick it up and give it a
real good look – “Inspection” as noted above.
If you think the price is a little more than you can afford, make a counter offer – he may say OK or NO and you can
negotiate further or????? Hopefully you both feel good about the DEAL if you buy it.
4) If you’re spending a lot of money or if you’re not sure about the items operation, ask if you can try it out. Obviously
he isn’t going to let you fly a plane, helicopter or quad copter but in the case of a battery charger, transmitter,
battery, or fit in your car, or whatever, he would probably allow you to check it out. If the item doesn’t work, ask
him if you can get your money back. Get a phone number in case you may have questions later.
5) Don’t spend too much $$$, sometimes you can trade stuff.
