First Sunday of Lent
*****************************************************************************************
Well, Lent is finally here, which means Spring isn't too far behind. For this First Sunday of Lent, we always
hear about the temptation stories in the desert. This event in the life of Jesus is reported on the first Sunday of
Lent.
Compared to the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, the details throughout Mark's narrative are sparse.
Mark tells us only that Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and that for 40 days he was tempted by Satan.
The Gospels of Matthew and Luke explain that Jesus fasted while in the desert, that Satan presented him with
three temptations, and that Jesus refused each one, quoting Scripture. Only the Gospels of Matthew and Mark
report that angels ministered to Jesus at the end of his time in the desert.
The temptation of Jesus follows immediately after his baptism by John the Baptist. Jesus' public
ministry in Galilee begins after his temptation in the desert. Mark's Gospel makes a connection between the
arrest of John the Baptist and the beginning of Jesus' ministry. Jesus' preaching about the Kingdom of God is
in continuity with the preaching of John the Baptist, but it is also something new. As Jesus announces it, the
Kingdom of God is beginning; the time of the fulfillment of God's promises is here and now.
The fact that Jesus spent 40 days in the desert is significant. This recalls the 40 years that the Israelites
wandered in the desert after being led from slavery in Egypt. The prophet Elijah also journeyed in the desert
for 40days and nights, making his way to Mt. Horeb, the mountain of God, where he was also attended to by
an angel of the Lord. Remembering the significance of these events, we also set aside 40 days for the season of
Lent.
In Mark's Gospel, the desert marks the beginning of Jesus' battle with Satan; the ultimate test will be in
Jesus' final hours on the cross. In a similar way, our Lenten observances are only beginning, a preparation for
and a reinforcement of our ongoing struggle to resist the temptations we face in our daily lives. During Lent,
we should allow ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit to remember the vows of our own Baptism in which we
promised to reject sin and to follow Jesus. Just as Jesus was ministered to by the angels, God also supports us
in our struggle against sin and temptation. We can only succeed because Jesus conquered sin once and for all
in his saving death on the cross. Happy Lent!
Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, Fr. Greg
PS- Several reminders. We should fast and abstain during Lent as much as possible but it is a must on Fridays
of Lent. Also a reminder that we have our Lenten Penance Service coming up on March 2, Monday night at
7PM. As Deacon Wally also reminded us in his homily, we should try to make reconciliation sometime during
Lent. See you there!

Fridays during Lent are days of fasting and abstinence.
Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet
celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day one full meal is allowed. Two other
meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but
together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not
permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.
Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of
abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be
seriously affected, Church law does not oblige.
When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, Father Greg should be
consulted.
Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and Catechumens
should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for Initiation into the Church or the
renewal of Baptism Promises at Easter.

If you are attending Annunciation and are not
registered with the Parish as a member, we have no
idea if you are a participating Catholic or not, so
please register and if you can not afford to give
monetarily please put a prayer card in the offertory
so that we know you are attending. Also for all of
you who pay by cash we really appreciate it but if
you would put it in an envelope we could track that
you are attending as well. It is important when it
comes to things such as baptisms and weddings. We
can not say you are active if we do not know.
Thank you…

Lent is a grace-filled time that aims for
“conversion of the heart, interior
conversion,” and “urges expression in
visible signs, gestures and works of
penance” (Catechism 1430). Fasting,
prayer, and almsgiving are three
important ways to express this
conversion. May we be generous in a
sacrificial way this Lent, with special
emphasis on assisting the poor.

Who are the Men of St. Joseph?
We, the Men of St. Joseph, are a group of Catholic men dedicated to becoming
the spiritual leaders of our families by strengthening our faith and being “real
world” examples of Christ. Our group bolsters discussion of faith and prayer
life specifically for men, giving men new ways to reflect upon their lives and be
better servants to God and their family. The result is nothing less than a
revived culture, the same culture that Pope John Paul II called the Culture of
Life.
Our mission is “To put the family in the hands of the Father.” We believe it is time for men to step
up and take a leadership role in guiding their families, friends, parishes and their communities towards Christ and the fullness of His Catholic Church.
We welcome you to join us on this journey on Sunday nights. We meet at the Knights of Columbus
House at 6:00pm and start with dinner. Please contact Gary Odle 252-259-5651 or

and parishioners in the Diocese of Raleigh to provide
this outreach. With the help of God, our combined
efforts can have a tremendous impact in responding
to those who depend on our help. - See more at:
