Christmas Card Recycling
A
Success!
This past week Joe Pepe from 9th
Once again Joe was overjoyed at
Avenue in Rockaway Point with the
assistance of long time friend and
neighbor Tim “Tusky” Butler and his
daughter Grace, boxed and shipped over
8,000 Christmas cards to be recycled
for charity.
The cards will be recycled by the
Saint Jude’s Ranch for Children and
then will be resold to benefit at-risk
and abused children, young adults and
their families.

this year. He had cards delivered from
all over the Rockaways, Brooklyn and
Long Island.
Over the years that Joe, his grandchildren and now the Butlers have
conducted the card recycling program
they have collected roughly over 50,000
cards to be recycled. Truly a Great Job
by all involved!

28th at 8:00 am, volunteers are needed
to assist Thomas Frerks in his Eagle
Scout Project of cleaning the sidewalk
along the Main Road. If you are able
to assist and help him achieve his
Eagle Scout goal, please report to St.
Genevieve’s this Saturday morning
to check in and receive a designated
work area. Volunteers are asked to
bring shovels, rakes and gloves. Please

The following letters are the opinions of its author

Equal Representation on
the Nominating Committee
Dear Editor and Fellow Shareholders,
Current Chairman of the Board, A.J.
Smith, wrote in the February 2015 Bulletin (paragraph 6 page 2), “Generally,
every year the Presidents of the three
Associations (Point Breeze, Rockaway
Point and Roxbury), or their chosen
representative, are nominated and
elected”. He also stated “It guarantees
that a leader from each Association
will have a voice in the nominating
process. It shows respect for the voice
of each Homeowner’s Association.”
Indeed over the past 2 years (2013 and
2014) the President of the Roxbury
Association could not serve and her
chosen representatives were put on the
committee.
The Nominating Committee is one
of the most important committees that
our cooperative has. It is imperative that
each community association be represented on the committee to ensure we
all have an equal say in the selection of
candidates for the Board of Directors.
A number of years ago the Rockaway
Point Association did not have any of
their representatives appointed, and the
Board at the time apologized and told
them “lesson learned”.
This year the Board of Directors
decided not to include a leader from the
Point Breeze Association on the nominating committee. I was told that Board
of Directors was aware of this issue but
voted the way they voted. Apparently
the lesson was not learned.
Where is our “respect and voice”?
I don’t know why this was done.
Shareholders may come to their own
conclusions as to why this was done
and I will continue to ask.
Serving on the Nominating Committee has been an honor for me over
the past few years. This year I chose
not to be on the committee for personal
reasons. I spoke to members of the
Board and was asked to submit a name
as the “chosen representative” from the
PBA’s Officers and Trustees and that s/
he would be selected. I asked that our
Vice President, David Caprio, be on
the nominating committee as our representative. It is a natural presumption
that the person next in order in the Association would be selected or, at least,
another member of the Associations
Board would be chosen. The Board of
Directors has a list of every Officer and
Trustee in the PBA.
On Saturday, February 14, I was
informed of the shareholders that were
selected to serve on the nominating
committee. As I write this letter, the
Cooperative Board of Directors has
not publicly announced who they are

so it would be inappropriate for me to
give their names here. I can tell you that
they are all good people, and the Point
Breeze Association and I do not think
of them negatively at all.
I wrote to all the Board members
asking why this was done. I reached
out to the Chairman and was told that
there is nothing that could be done now
that, “Good or Bad” the vote is final. We
were not given a good reason why this
was done other than, once again, “lesson learned”. With all due respect, that
is not good enough. All 3 Associations
should have equal representation on the
Nominating Committee. This year we
do not. It is an insult to the Point Breeze
Association and its members.
I would like to remind all shareholders that you can nominate any
cooperative shareholder for the Board
of Directors by submitting his/her name
to the Cooperative office and Board of
Directors.

I am about to tell you the truth that you
won’t believe me. So I ask you – no I
beg you to picture your precious child,
your grandchild or any of your loved
ones with their heads bent back and a
dull blade at their throats. Already I can
hear the mocking tone of your disbelief.
No! You say it can’t happen, and I tell
you it not only can, but it will.
Oh! They may not be beheaded or
crucified. Perhaps they might just be
pierced through with shrapnel or nails
from the satchel bomb thrown in the
Mall. Or maybe shot with an automatic
weapon while they are in the deli. Again,
I hear your disbelieving derision, so at
this point I must simply say:
Shut up – I’m trying to save your
life. You know nothing about Islam
except the lies you’ve been told. Now
let me tell you the truth before it’s too
late and you find yourself standing in
front of the next monument honoring
our fallen dead.
Islam is the religion of peace – and
so it is, just as we have been told over
and over and over again by our President and our Secretary of Homeland
Security, and our State Department
spokespersons. Herein lies the lie: Islam
is the religion of peace, but according to
the Koran, peace is achieved only when
the entire globe is subjugated to Allah.
Peace is only for Muslims – Christians
and Jews, more specifically, are apes
and pigs, whose bones are to fuel the
fires of hell.
I have not the time or space to teach
you all you need to know about Your
Mortal Enemy, but let me simplify two
important koranic principles:
Taqiyya: (ta key a) is the sanctioned
use of lying to further Islam. So when
the Mullahs say Islam deplores the

Polar Vortex
As the weather condition known as the polar vortex continues to plague
the United States with sub-zero temperatures, snow in the north and ice
storms in the south, many are beginning to see that the vortex is slowly
inching its way into Congress, with the fate of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) barely hanging on. Funding for DHS runs out in two
weeks and meanwhile Congress can’t seem to get its act together to fund
what is in most people’s minds as crucial to the protection of the United
States from sources seeking to destroy us. What is the hold up you might
well ask and it comes down to a fight between the two houses of Congress
over tying the President’s immigration bill to funding the DHS. What one
has to do with the other is beyond my comprehension but tied together they
are and neither side seems willing at this juncture to compromise or for that
matter to undo them.
So where does that leave us in combating and protecting our nation from
outside threats. Well if there isn’t a compromise soon, two things will happen. First of all many employees of DHS will be forced to choose between
coming to work for no paycheck or find other employment. Second and
perhaps almost as important as the first is that the new Republican Congress will be seen as ineffectual and powerless. The prospect of two more
years of a do nothing Congress loom larger on the horizon if they fail to get
DHS funded. And the bottom line is that the security of our country will be
jeopardized. Not something that one likes to think about especially in light
of the ongoing war on terrorism. We hope and pray that our representatives
in Congress will be able to see past party lines in an effort to protect us all.
The polar vortex thinking that seems to be seizing Washington needs to thaw
out quickly especially when our overall security is at stake.

in more than 100 suras the just killing
of Christians and Jews, but it demands
it. Get it?
Abrogation: When Mohammed was
first proclaiming his visions in Mecca,
he was without supporters and weak,
so he spoke peaceful suras, but after he
subdued in bloody conflict the Medina
population he spoke with great passion
of killing the enemies of Allah. Abrogation commands that the later suras of the
violent killing cancel out the conflicting
earlier suras of peace.
The gravity of the danger cannot be
overstated. Our government from the
highest echelons has been infiltrated
with a false notion of Islam. Why does
no one counter the President’s oft repeated refrain of Islam being the religion
of peace with the original quotes from
the Koran itself or from the hadiths,
which tell of how Mohammed cut the
hands and feet off infidels and watched
them bleed out. How peaceful!
Now the question of the silent
majority of peaceful Muslims must be
addressed. It is true that the overwhelming number of the reported 1.5 billion
Muslims are not active jihadists. Keep
in mind that is in large part due to the
fact that more than 70% of Muslims are
just like the majority of Christians and
Jews in that they do not read their Koran,
Old or New Testaments. Ironically, we
can thank God for that. Nonetheless we

Have you ever heard of the “Chapel
of the Four Chaplains”? When I read
it in the “American Legion” Magazine,
I had to share it in this column. More
American history for you boys, girls,
teens, pre teens, young adults, etc.,
etc. This is considered one of the most
inspiring stories of WWII.
It is about 4 men of different faiths
on an Army Transport that was sinking
rapidly. The heroic deed they performed
was to give up their “Life vests so that
others could survive”.
On Feb. 3, 1942 the U.S. A.T.
Dorchester was torpedoed by a Ger-
man U Boat off of Greenland, killing
672 of 902 officers, enlisted men, merchant seamen and civilian workers on
board”. At the time, Harry Truman was
President, he dedicated an Interfaith
Shrine and Memorial to the four Army
Chaplains Rev. George Fox, Methodist,
Rev. Alexander Goode, Jewish, Father
John Washington Roman Catholic and
Rev. Chas. Poling, Reformed Church.
The original Chapel was built in 1942
at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, in
their memory.

Islamic terrorists that pay strict attention
to the teachings of Allah.

WHISPERING BREEZES
“Heard around town that…”
Have to start this week off by sending our most sincere condolences to
our most prolific and consistent writer/
contributor, Mrs. Gert Hendry who lost
her beloved husband of 69 years Andy
at the end of last week. Andy, who
along with Gert, had a great impact
on hundreds of young Pointers lives
from running the Tri-Teen program in
the late 60’s and early 70’s to his great
work with the then St. Thomas More
CYO program, will be sorely missed
by everyone who knew him. God must
have needed an angel, rest in peace in
heaven Andy, you truly earned it!
Hope to see everyone at the Cooperative Town Hall Meeting this coming
Thursday evening, March 5th, at the
Colony Theater. The meeting starts
at 7pm and among the many items on
the agenda are:
- a reconstruction update, including
home rebuilds, build it back update
and numbers of vacated and untouched
homes,
- an update on Cooperative buildings including the Security Barracks,
the Bayhouse, the Sugar Bowl and
a temporary seasonal store in Roxbury,
- a financial update and info on the
upcoming Community clean up and
- finally a question and answer
session.
With the meeting being held on
a Thursday evening a recap will not
be able to be included in next week’s
Pointer, but look for it in the March
13th issue.
Hope the weather warms up a bit so
the Thomas Frerks Eagle Scout project

acting or musical and it is not a competition but rather a talent showcase for

Parade and Cultural Committee’s
annual parade installation dinner at
Antun’s catering hall on Saturday
night. Though the weather was snowy
and cold the turnout was very good
and close to 300 folks enjoyed dancing the night away with the Celtic
Justice Band. Congratulations to all
the truly deserving honorees of this
year’s parade.

Sandy Victims Should Not Be
Blindsided By FEMA
Recoupment Announce Legislation To
Require FEMA To Waive Debts For Victims
Of Disasters Since 2012
U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer
and Kirsten Gillibrand announced legislation to extend recoupment fairness
to Superstorm Sandy victims. After Superstorm Sandy, the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) made
disaster assistance payments to victims
throughout the hard-hit areas in New
York. As part of its obligation to reduce
fraud and waste, FEMA conducts audits
of individual assistance payments to
identify improper payments made to
disaster victims. When FEMA believes
it has uncovered improper payment
the agency will attempt to recoup the
entire grant.
Over two years after Superstorm
Sandy, some recipients of disaster assistance are now being blindsided with
such recoupment letters from FEMA,
requiring them to pay back money
already spent on their recovery effort
and funds that many no longer have on
hand. In the aftermath of Superstorm
Sandy, the average recoupment amount
has been $7,000, and more than 60%
of those New Yorkers who received
recoupment notices have an income of
less than $50,000. Schumer and Gillibrand explained that the vast majority
of these cases are not cases of fraud,
but rather honest mistakes on behalf of
FEMA or the disaster victim.
Previously, the Disaster Assistance
Recoupment Fairness Act of 2011
protected against this situation, granting FEMA with additional authority
to waive debts incurred as a result
of improper payments, however the
legislation expired in 2011. Given
the financially devastating impacts of
Superstorm Sandy and other recent
disasters, Schumer and Gillibrand are
announcing the Disaster Assistance
Recoupment Fairness Act of 2015,
which will extend and expand upon the
previous recoupment legislation.
“Requiring our New York’s Superstorm Sandy victims to repay thousands
of dollars in aid, two and a half years
after the storm, is a devastating request
for many of these individuals and families, because they have already put this
money to good use. This legislation will
make sure that these victims can keep
this much-needed money,” said Senator
Schumer. “Much of this disaster aid has
been used in legitimate ways to help victims finally get back on their feet after
the storm. FEMA should waive all debt
among Superstorm Sandy victims and
repay those who have already provided

repayments used those dollars to rebuild their homes and businesses, and
for FEMA to come back more than
two years later to ask for that money
back is unfair,” said Senator Kirsten

work still underway, we must protect
the individuals and families who responsibly used these resources to get
back on their feet.”

Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA). Earlier
this month, Schumer announced that
FEMA will stop the Superstorm Sandy
recoupment action for thirty Belle
Harbor Manor residents. In November
2014, FEMA unexpectedly said that
residents of Belle Harbor Manor, an
assisted living facility in Rockaway,
hit hard by Superstorm Sandy, had to
pay back much of the Sandy disaster
aid they were initially granted after the
storm. In FEMA’s recoupment notices,
which arrived long after residents had
spent this Sandy aid to get back on
their feet, FEMA stated that the aid
was supposed to be used solely on
temporary housing. However, Belle
Harbor Manor residents moved around
to different state-funded shelters after
the storm, and residents needed to use
the Sandy money to purchase other
necessary items, like food and clothing. In letters and outreach to FEMA,
Schumer explained that many of the
Belle Harbor Manor residents involved
in the recoupment live on a fixed income
and are still feeling the financial effects
of Superstorm Sandy.
Schumer and Gillibrand explained
that, like in the case of Belle Harbor,
FEMA should extend recoupment fairness to all Superstorm Sandy victims.
The legislators said that while it is
important to reduce waste, fraud and
abuse by cutting down on improper disaster assistance payments, such efforts
must be made on the front end of this
process, and that doing it on the back
end goes against equity and punishes
honest Americans.

bring our community one step closer
to putting the destruction of Super
Storm Sandy behind us. The comprehensive damage caused by Super
Storm Sandy left the public parks and
playgrounds in the Rockaways and

Cold enough for you? If you are old
enough you recall the banter between
Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon?
“How cold is it?” “It is so cold my
pipes froze: couldn’t speak until they
thawed.” Any attempt at humor with
regard to the weather is tempered by
the fact that the groundhog froze to
death which can only mean spring is
around the corner. How cold is it? I
heard in Boston city dwellers wanted
to surrender to the snow but their white
flags went unseen. Badoom!
Suffice it say brrr. Friends who lived
in Minnesota for five years and returned
to Rockaway don’t ever remember it this
cold in what could be the coldest region
in America. Could it have been worse
here? It could have. We could have gotten Boston’s snow, the weather cutting
Rockaway off from the mainland and
forcing us to hibernate for the remainder

of the winter. Those New Englanders
are surely a hardy bunch, must be the
‘chowdah.’
A homeowner’s max concern this
time of year is frozen pipes, especially
when our weather hits single digits.
Alas, having experienced this homeowner’s malady ten years ago, I followed my plumber’s instructions and let
a combination of hot and cold water drip
from the lowest faucet. Still my pipes
froze at which time I followed instruction number two and put a space heater
in the garage where my water meter is
(on a north wall) and closed the garage
door. In under a half an hour, water
was pouring from my faucets. What a
welcomed sound! Please understand
the sense of emptiness one feels when
turning on the water for morning coffee
and nothing comes out of the faucet. It
is probably true that most of us heatwrapped our pipes or at the very least
wrapped them with insulation against
the cold. Heat-wrap to prevent frozen
pipes is a winner as is placing an electric
heater with a thermostat near the water
meter, plug it in and set it for 40 degrees.
Homeowners should be more vigilant
for frozen pipes during a nor’easter or
a straight north wind especially if the
water meter is on the north side of the
house.
When Sandy workers were replacing
my downstairs sheetrock, I requested
they leave a conduit in the garage
back wall (which abuts to my kitchen)
through which I placed an extension
cord. The reason for this was for me to
be able to connect the Verizon internet
and phone connections to my generator
just in case. This is accomplished after a
maze of temp extension wires are from
garage to boiler room split to generator
and upstairs to my office. The upstairs
kitchen, bedroom and living room are on
a separate line going down from the bedroom to the generator. What a tangled
web these extension cords weave! I put
the conduit cord to good use adapting the
hole in the wall to the heater extension
cord in the garage and eliminating the
necessity for my going outside to the
garage to activate the heater. What do
they say about necessity?
If everyone had but one winter wish
it would be for a Jeff Dolan. Jeff, my
plumber, not only came by the house
to see whether I had frozen plumbing
problems, he brought me a quart of milk
and a newspaper to boot. He truly is a
sweetheart not to mention a fabulous
plumber. The last time he paid such
attention to me was after Sandy to rig
my boilers temporarily for heat and
hot water after I got my generator. In
return, his entire family came over for
a hot shower. I told Jeff I would give
him a shout out (917-434-1478) for the
concern and fairness he shows for his
customers in all kinds of weather particularly now as he has his pipe thawing
equipment at the ready. Around these
parts we call him the ‘Thawmaster.’
I can’t help thinking how profoundly
weather has changed in my lifetime. Do
you septuagenarians agree? Can you
recall such sustained numbers of days
with near zero weather? I can’t. Oh, we’d
get a few days in the teens and maybe
one or two in single digits in my youth
(although I can’t remember when); but,
witnessing it and living through the
intense cold, day after day, seems like
a recent phenomenon. Weather specialists say that the warming of the oceans
and winter precipitation are producing
the snow and ice and cold and making
them hover around longer. This is as

Scholars’ Academy 9th Grade students Andriana Lamendola and Nasreen
Duqmaq are participating in the Urban
Barcode Project! This competition
increases these students’ exposure to
STEM activities and is a great extension
of the content they are learning in their
classes. Their goal for this experiment
will be to analyze specific vegetarian
brands in order to determine if these so
called “meatless” products are truthfully
advertised or simply mislabeled. This
project is very relevant with the amount
of people in our communities whom are
currently vegetarians.
These students will investigate if
companies that specialize in producing
“vegetarian meat” dishes are using false
advertising of product contents in order
to achieve an authentic meat flavor and
increase business. In order to identify
if vegetarian food producers mislabel
their products, they plan to test various
brands, spanning different supermarkets,
to test for meat ingredients.
Students will be using equipment and
instruments at the Harlem DNA Lab.
This equipment will allow them to strip
the food’s cell membranes and barcode
the DNA to identify the true ingredients.
This experience will help these students,
and all students competing, learn valuable scientific skills needed to be college
and career ready.

SFDS Catholic Academy Celebrates
Catholic School’s Week
St. Francis de Sales Catholic
Academy celebrated Catholic Schools
Week this past month. The theme of
this year’s celebration was Catholic
Schools: Faith, Academics, and Service. These are three goals of every
Catholic school and here at St. Francis
they are alive and strong.
Some of the highlights of the
weeklong celebration were student
appreciation day where all students
were treated to ice cream, crazy hat
day, and the very popular talent show.
Of course Mass was celebrated as a
school community and parish community to mark the annual celebration.
The week ended with the highly anticipated Blue and Gold day. Students
on all grade levels were split into two
teams and competed in various athletic competitions where all students
demonstrated true sportsmanship.
Students came dressed in their team
colors. Some students really showed
team spirit adorning wigs, tutus, capes
and high socks. The booming cheers
and yells of excitement could be
heard on 129th Street as students of
all grade levels cheered for their team
to be victorious. It was a great week
to attend a Catholic School, but then
again every week is a great week to
attend St. Francis de Sales Catholic
Academy where Faith, Academics,
and Service are not just words for a
week but a way of life.

Championship
On Sunday February 8th, Bishop
Kearney Senior Lisa Fajardo won
the 1500m event at the CHSAA City
Championships which was held at the
NYC New Balance Armory.
Lisa finished the race in 4:46:01
and she is currently ranked 10th in NY
and 16th in the US for this event. Winning this event automatically qualified
Lisa to compete at the New York High
School State Championships which
are being held at Cornell University
on March 7th.
Lisa has also been invited to run the
Girls Wanamaker mile at the prestigious
Millrose games.

Assemblyman Goldfeder Takes to
the Ice on Jamaica Bay
With record low temperatures bringing the deep freeze to the area, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder took the opportunity to tour the ice on Jamaica Bay.
Goldfeder was joined by Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers member and Broad Channel Civic Association President, Dan Mundy, Jr., who guided the Assemblyman
hundreds of yards out onto the ice fields west of Broad Channel.
On Monday night, February 23,
2015, in rapidly falling to sub-zero
temperatures, a Support the Shield
rally was held at Beach 116th Street
and the Ocean Memorial for Flight
587. The rally to show support for our
hard working members of the 100th
and 101st Precincts as well as Transit
Division 23 Police Officers was well
attended despite the frigid temps.
Organizer Joe Concannon gave a
fiery speech that livened up the crowd
imploring our politicians to stop with
the dangerous rhetoric that can lead
to division and violence rather than
respect and unity. Mr. Concannon
then gave the microphone over to
100th Precinct Community Council
member Danny Ruscillo. Mr. Ruscillo
reminded the crowd of the heroic
work our Police Officers do on our
part every day, and the fact that they
need proper training in taking down
those who don’t want to be arrested
not lessons in how to breathe and
take mints.

grand rally on the steps of City Hall
on March 8th at 2pm and is calling on
the good citizens of New York City

of post-Sandy home improvements and repairs

Patrick’s Day Parade and Cultural Committee Ball at Antun’s in Queens Village. The Assemblyman praised the work of the committee and its honorees,
emphasizing the many contributions Irish-Americans have made to the Rockaway
community. Goldfeder also took the time to drink to the health of the Tubridy
family, who run many local businesses in Rockaway and throughout the city.

Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder has
drafted a bill extending New York City
property tax abatements for Superstorm
Sandy victims seeing tax increases due
to home repairs made as a result of the
storm. This legislation would extend
the law passed in 2014 that reduced
homeowner’s property taxes for fiscal
year 2014-2015.
“Sadly, more than two years after
Sandy, many families find themselves
spending their life savings to recover
from the storm,” said Assemblyman
Phil Goldfeder. “If passed, this new
legislation will provide much-needed
financial relief to many of our families
in southern Queens and Rockaway who
continue to be burdened by the huge
financial cost of rebuilding.”
The new legislation amends state
real property law to allow New York
City to provide a partial abatement
on homeowner’s annual property tax
assessment for home repairs and improvements stemming from damage
sustained during Superstorm Sandy.
Under current tax law, home improvements are not subject to state property
tax caps intended to protect homeown-
ers from property value increases that
can translate into higher taxes. The new
legislation would provide tax relief to
homeowners meeting the following
criteria:
NYC Department of Finance
(DOF) reduced the assessed value of a
homeowner’s property between Fiscal
Years 2012-2013 as a result of damage
caused by Superstorm Sandy.
DOF then increased the assessed
value between Fiscal Years 20142015.
The property’s assessed value for
Fiscal Year 2015 is greater than the
assessed value was in 2013.
Last year, Assemblyman Goldfeder
sponsored similar legislation that provided partial tax abatements for postSandy repairs made by homeowners.
However, this law only applied to 2014
and has not been renewed. As a result,
many homeowners were shocked to
find large increases in their property
taxes when they received their Notice
of Property Value from the city in
January.

welcomed Pastor Robert Sundholm
to the pulpit to continue our series on
the “Big Picture” as he shared about
the Background of the New Testament.
Pastor Rob shared at the beginning of
the New Testament the Jewish people
were under the rule of Rome, and the
Roman Empire lasted for 700 years.
This was longer than any other in history.
Any nation hates to be under the rule of
another and the Jew hated that this was

happening, the Roman soldiers were
everywhere! Many different groups of
Jewish people reacted in different ways
to the Romans.
The Zealots tried to use force against
them, The Sadducees co-operated with
them and received a share of power, and
the Pharissees separated themselves and
strictly followed religious laws in hopes
that it would bring God’s Kingdom to
Israel quickly. An important fact to know
is that Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem was due
to the decree of the Roman Emperor at
the time. He also died in Jerusalem due
to the order of a Roman governor.
Pastor Rob then shared about some
events in the life of Christ that were
important in the New Testament. Bethlehem is where Jesus was born in the
region known as Judea. Micah 5:2,4
talks about Bethlehem being small but
the Savior of the world would come from
there. Nazareth is where Jesus grew up
in the region of Galilee Matthew 2:19-
23 shares that an angel of the Lord told
Mary and Joseph to return to the land of
Israel because Herod was dead.
In Luke 4: 14-32 Pastor rob shared
how Jesus was rejected in Nazareth his
own hometown. They did not accept his
claim the prophecies of a Messiah had
been fulfilled through him, Pastor shared
that they actually became furious. He
went to Capernaum and taught on the
Sabbath the people were amazed at his
teaching for his words had authority.
Most of Jesus’ public ministry took
place in Galilee but he traveled to Jerusalem and ministered in Samaria and
in Judea. The final events of his life all
took place in Judea.
Pastor Rob then shared an article by
Charles Stanley about when God is silent
and what he is trying to teach us based
on John 11: 1-15.

the Lord’s purpose for not immediately
answering prayer? How should you
respond when God seems distant?
Examples of God’s Silence: Mary
and Martha and their sick brother Lazarus (John 11), 400 years of silence
between the testaments.
Why is God sometimes silent? To
get our attention, to make us aware of
un-confessed sin, to postpone an answer
because we aren’t ready to listen, to teach
us trust in Him (Hebrews 13:5 shows that
even if we can’t see God working, he is
with us.) To help us distinguish between
His voice and other voices, to encourage perseverance until we experience a
breakthrough and to teach us the practice
of sitting quietly in His presence.
How do we respond to God’s silence?
Disappointment, discouragement, confusion, doubt (e.g., Dr. Stanley’s doctor didn’t believe in God but cried out
in desperation for help.), guilt (Some
people fear they have sinned), anger,
fear (some Christians feel deserted by
God or worry that they have lost their
salvation.)
How should we respond to God’s
silence? Ask the Lord why? Jesus questioned the Father (Matt. 27:46; Mark
15:34). Remember that God’s silence
doesn’t mean He’s inactive, Trust Him.
In His silence, He works for good in your
life (Ps. 46:10, 138:8). Anticipate a more
intimate relationship with Him, respect
God’s right to be silent. Deliberately set
aside time to be quiet before Him. Read
the Bible, and tell the Lord you are available to listen. Keep praying. Eventually,
you will have a breakthrough.
Through times of silence, God
impresses on us the truth about sin,
develops our trust in Him, and guides
us to maturity. When the Father seems
distant, faithfully seek Him and watch
for His provision and the New Testament teaches all about Jesus and how
we should live our lives.
Pastor Rob shared in closing that
next week Pastor Will would be sharing
an overview of the Gospels. He shared
that although there were 400 silent years
leading up to the coming of the Messiah,
God was at work preparing the world for
the grand entrance of the one who would
come to serve, to seek and to save the lost
and to offer his body as a sacrifice for
the sins of many. Read it for yourselves,
God’s word is awesome.

value has increased over $300,000 in the
last two years and they say it’s based on
the alterations I did after Sandy. This is
going to increase my taxes by a third,
which would put me paying close to
$10,000 a year,” said Neponsit resident
Michael Scandiffio. “My neighbor got
the same exact increase even though
their home is smaller. It seems like
anyone who was hit by Sandy is now
getting nailed with these high taxes.
They’re killing us.”
According to the Department of
Finance, abatements received by homeowners last year ranged from hundreds
of dollars, to upwards of $4,000. The new
legislation proposed by Assemblyman
Goldfeder is expected to provide similar
benefits to homeowners still struggling
to recover from Sandy. For Goldfeder,
this would translate into considerable
relief for many in the community.
“This bill is about making sure every
family can afford to rebuild their home
and stay in the neighborhoods they
know and love,” concluded Goldfeder.
“Providing this tax relief will provide
financial strength to families as they
work to rebuild from Sandy.”

Property Tax Assistance Town Hall
City Council Member Eric A. Ulrich hosted a Property Tax Assistance
Town Hall this past Monday evening
in Broad Channel with over fifty residents from throughout his district to
discuss their property tax issues with
representatives of the Tax Commission and New York City Department
of Finance.
Ulrich convened the Town Hall
because of local property tax concerns
stemming from Hurricane Sandy. After
the storm, the Department of Finance
reduced residential property values in
damaged neighborhoods and as a result,
most households saw their property
taxes drastically reduced. Last year, as
many homes were repaired or rebuilt,
the same properties were reassessed
and those values rose significantly –
thus increasing taxes and confusing
many area residents.
Caseworkers from Build it Back
were also present to assist with claims
and other disaster recovery related
issues.
“Understanding your property
taxes is never an easy task – especially
when it can involve different city agencies and confusing paperwork,” said
Councilman Eric Ulrich. “This event
afforded individuals the opportunity to
further discuss their specific property
tax issues with the Tax Commission and
appeal if necessary. I’d like to thank the
Broad Channel Civic Association and
VFW Post 260 for accommodating and
making this a successful event.”

Spring Construction Issue

Chair, New York City Council Committee on Veterans
New York City is quickly becoming one of the foremost locations in
the country for entrepreneurship. Various high-tech hubs in neighborhoods
around the city house successful startups that are growing and hiring each
day. Frequent news headlines also
spotlight the rush of inventors, capital,
and ideas flocking to the boroughs for
entrepreneurial causes.
The city’s desire to develop these
new markets and foster entrepreneurship has unfortunately skipped
over the local veterans’ community.
Roughly 230,000 veterans, including 16,000 veteran business owners
(VBOs), call New York City home.
And in the coming months, thousands
more service members will leave active duty and return to the boroughs
seeking work.
In my recent trip with the City
Council to Israel, I learned that the
small nation leads the world with the
highest ratio of start-ups per person
- and many credit the obligatory
military service for making this a reality. The discipline, work ethic, and
commitment to excellence developed
in service are all qualities that help
business owners excel in the private
sector. Moreover, recent VA studies
and reports from various Veterans
Service Organizations all suggest
that a growing number of vets would
rather work for themselves.
New York State has made recent
efforts to foster veteran entrepreneurship. In 2014, New York joined the
ranks of other states to create a setaside for VBOs in the government
procurement process. A significant
amount of businesses have already
applied and that number continues to
grow. Also, New York State Veterans’
Business Outreach Centers counsel
aspiring VBOs with business plan
developing, marketing assistance, financial guidance, and other services,
free-of-charge.
Our city should be leading the way
with local services to complement
state functions and federal initiatives. Some ideas include constructing veterans-exclusive incubators
in each borough; preferences in the
city government procurement process; and creating veteran-specific
business acceleration teams to assist
with arcane permitting and licensing processes – similar to programs
administered by the NYC Business
Acceleration Office for the hospitality industry.
Equally critical, local universities need to offer unique curriculum
and courses for veterans to translate
their military experiences, skills, and
talents into private sector success.
At Syracuse University, the Whitman School of Management’s Boot
to Business program trains recently
discharged service members for business ownership through intensive
workshops and lectures. The large
student veterans population at CUNY,
New York University, and Columbia
University could benefit immensely
from these types of forward-thinking
initiatives.
Last month, the City Council held
a hearing on promoting veteran entrepreneurship. A range of stakeholders
testified – all offering solid direction
on how city government can assist
local veteran-owned businesses. The
Veterans Committee is working with
those recommendations and we hope
to introduce an action plan in the
near future.
New York City has a long standing tradition of proudly honoring our
local heroes. Veterans contribute so
much to our country, and we can and
should do more to help them pursue
their entrepreneurial dreams. It’s
good for them, good for our city, and
simply the right thing to do.
