Lent 2 2015 ABC - The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saint Luke

SAINT LUKE CHURCH
March 1, 2015
Welcome
A warm welcome to all who gather in the name of Christ this morning.
If you are looking for a church home, we hope you will consider Saint
Luke.
All baptized Christians are welcome at the Lord’s table. We all need
what only Christ can give.
For your convenience, there are large print copies of the Sunday
bulletin and individual sound enhancement devices.
The wheelchair accessible entrance is located on Greenview Avenue and
the wheelchair accessible lavatory is off the left side of the church.
A section for parents with very young children is located in the back
of the church. Rocking chairs, floor cushions and children’s booster seats may
be found in that area. In the very front of the church is a row of childsized chairs for children who want to see the action up close. Parents
may sit with them or in the pew behind. Church Activity Bags with books
and coloring materials for the very young are available from the ushers.
A closed circuit television carrying the service and a PreSchool play area
is available to parents and children in a classroom (upstairs from church
lobby) when attention spans have reached their limit.
Free parking is available in the parking garage immediately west of the
church. Enter from Melrose Street and park in any available space
except those designated handicapped.
Please let the ushers know if there is anything else they can do to
assist your worship experience.
Today
SAINT LUKE CHURCH
Lent 2
The Lenten environment reflects our journey of self-examination and
repentance during this forty-day period. Wrapped in images of the Fall snakeskin and skulls – the pikes that flank the altar remind us that our
sinful nature, apart from Christ. bars us from the presence of God. But
Jesus’ death and resurrection will fell these barriers and reunite us with our
loving God.
During the season of Lent, changes in the liturgy serve to emphasize
the reflective and penitential nature of this season:
The joyous Hymn of Praise (Glory to God) and the Alleluia are not
sung again until the Easter Vigil.
An expanded eucharistic prayer with a spoken preface pays special
attention to the gifts of God in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

PRAYER CONNECTION AND REFLECTION
Time to reflect and pray individually as you prepare for worship
THE PRAYER FOR THE DAY
O God, by the passion of your blessed Son you made an instrument of shameful
death to be for us the means of life. Grant us so to glory in the cross of Christ
that we may gladly suffer shame and loss for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ our
Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now
and forever. Amen

FOR THOSE IN NEED
God of compassion, help us to see the face of Christ in those who are poor, and in
serving them to serve you. Give us generous hearts so that those living in poverty
may have adequate resources. By your Spirit move us to affirm the dignity of all
people and to work for just laws. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, we commit to your gracious care and keeping all the men and

PRAYER FOR PEACE
Gracious God, grant peace among nations. Cleanse us from our own hearts the
seeds of strife: greed and envy, harsh misunderstandings and ill will, fear and
desire for revenge. Make us quick to welcome ventures in cooperation among
the peoples of the world, so that there may be woven the fabric of a common
good too strong to be torn by the evil hands of war. In the time of opportunity
make us be diligent; and in the time of peril, let not our courage fail; through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,

Psalmody
Psalm 22:23-31
Chanted Responsively
You who fear the LORD, give praise! All you of Jacob's | line,
give glory.
Stand in awe of the LORD, all you off- | spring of Israel.
For the LORD does not despise nor abhor the poor in
their poverty;
neither is the LORD face | hidden from them;
but when they cry out, | the LORD hears them.
7
From you comes my praise in the | great assembly;
I will perform my vows in the sight of those who | fear the
LORD.
The poor shall eat | and be satisfied,
Let those who seek the LORD give praise! May your
hearts | live forever!
All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn | to the
LORD;
all the families of nations shall bow | before God.
For dominion belongs | to the LORD,
who rules o- | ver the nations.
|
Indeed, all who sleep in the earth shall bow down in worship;
all who go down to the dust, though they be dead, shall
kneel be- | fore the LORD.
Their descendants shall | serve the LORD,
whom they shall proclaim to genera- | tions to come.
They shall proclaim God's deliverance to a people | yet unborn,
saying to them, "The | LORD has acted!"

Hymn of the Day #667
Take Up Your Cross, the Savior Said
Nicene Creed
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the
virgin Mary and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
who with the Father and the Son
is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen
