SAINT LUKE CHURCH March 1, 2015 Welcome A warm welcome to all who gather in the name of Christ this morning. If you are looking for a church home, we hope you will consider Saint Luke. All baptized Christians are welcome at the Lord’s table. We all need what only Christ can give. For your convenience, there are large print copies of the Sunday bulletin and individual sound enhancement devices. The wheelchair accessible entrance is located on Greenview Avenue and the wheelchair accessible lavatory is off the left side of the church. A section for parents with very young children is located in the back of the church. Rocking chairs, floor cushions and children’s booster seats may be found in that area. In the very front of the church is a row of childsized chairs for children who want to see the action up close. Parents may sit with them or in the pew behind. Church Activity Bags with books and coloring materials for the very young are available from the ushers. A closed circuit television carrying the service and a PreSchool play area is available to parents and children in a classroom (upstairs from church lobby) when attention spans have reached their limit. Free parking is available in the parking garage immediately west of the church. Enter from Melrose Street and park in any available space except those designated handicapped. Please let the ushers know if there is anything else they can do to assist your worship experience. Today SAINT LUKE CHURCH Lent 2 The Lenten environment reflects our journey of self-examination and repentance during this forty-day period. Wrapped in images of the Fall snakeskin and skulls – the pikes that flank the altar remind us that our sinful nature, apart from Christ. bars us from the presence of God. But Jesus’ death and resurrection will fell these barriers and reunite us with our loving God. During the season of Lent, changes in the liturgy serve to emphasize the reflective and penitential nature of this season: The joyous Hymn of Praise (Glory to God) and the Alleluia are not sung again until the Easter Vigil. An expanded eucharistic prayer with a spoken preface pays special attention to the gifts of God in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. 3 SAINT LUKE CHURCH HOLY COMMUNION Sunday, March 1, 2015 Second Sunday in Lent THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT 8:30 AM PRAYER CONNECTION AND REFLECTION Time to reflect and pray individually as you prepare for worship THE PRAYER FOR THE DAY O God, by the passion of your blessed Son you made an instrument of shameful death to be for us the means of life. Grant us so to glory in the cross of Christ that we may gladly suffer shame and loss for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen REMEMBER THOSE WHO ARE ILL O God, the strength of the weak and the comfort of sufferers: Mercifully hear our prayers and grant to your servants Carole Batjes Joan Leeney Helen Hendricksen Catherine Bearmore Jim Krupp Kaylo Nanni Scott Carrera Christine Heffron Erik Miller Patricia Janda Dolores Soria Lillian Brusick Emily Olson Rosalie Heesemann Ethan Sappington Kelly Herd Marcia Young Stacie Sparks Rick Varney Allen Lis Bruce Beck Clyde Hallowell Tom Vuillemot Daniel Mjolsness Peter Sokolowski Christie Lang the help of your power, that illness may be turned into health and our sorrow into joy; through Jesus Christ. Amen FOR THOSE IN NEED God of compassion, help us to see the face of Christ in those who are poor, and in serving them to serve you. Give us generous hearts so that those living in poverty may have adequate resources. By your Spirit move us to affirm the dignity of all people and to work for just laws. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. REMEMBER THOSE SERVING IN THE ARMED FORCES Almighty God, we commit to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad: Nicholas Bakulinski Tristan Bakulinski Ryan Countryman Seth Clements Darnell Harris Drake Ottley Karl Warnstedt Jeremy Strohmayer Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. PRAYER FOR PEACE Gracious God, grant peace among nations. Cleanse us from our own hearts the seeds of strife: greed and envy, harsh misunderstandings and ill will, fear and desire for revenge. Make us quick to welcome ventures in cooperation among the peoples of the world, so that there may be woven the fabric of a common good too strong to be torn by the evil hands of war. In the time of opportunity make us be diligent; and in the time of peril, let not our courage fail; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 4 GATHERING Sit Stand Prelude Confession and Forgiveness Hymn #831 Greeting Prayer of the Day p. 94 The God of Abraham Praise p. 138 WORD Sit Stand Sit Stand Kneel First Reading Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16 The reading concludes: The word of the Lord. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen 9 GREAT THANKSGIVING Kneel The Lord be with you. And also with you. Prayers of Intercession After each petition: Hear us, O God, your mercy is great. Stand Lift up your hearts.
