JESUS SAVES Big Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church REVEREND JOHN FOSTER PH.D., SENIOR PASTOR SUNDAY, MARCH 1, 2015 7:45AM & 11:00AM HOLY COMMUNION PRELUDE PHILLIP SKERRET, JR PROCESSIONAL MINISTERS, STEWARDS AND ACOLYTES * DOXOLOGY #647 PRAISE GOD FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW ; PRAISE HIM ALL CREATURES HERE BELOW ; PRAISE HIM ABOVE YE HEAVENLY HOST, PRAISE FATHER, SON AND HOLY GHOST. AMEN. * CALL TO WORSHIP Minister: I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord!” Our feet have been standing within your gates, O Jerusalem! People: For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. Minister: For the sake of the house of the Lord our God; I will seek your good. People: They are planted in the house of the Lord; they flourish in the courts of our God. Minister: O Lord, I love the habitation of your house, and the place where your glory dwells. People: But the Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him. Minister: Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my Rock, and my Redeemer. People: O sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! I will sing of loyalty and of justice, to you, O Lord, I will sing. HYMN OF PRAISE AMEC HYMN #455 — LOVE DIVINE, ALL LOVE EXCELLING 1. Love Divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heaven, to earth come down; Fix in us Thy humble dwelling; All Thy faithful mercies crown! Jesus, Thou art all compassion, Pure, unbounded love Thou art; Visit us with Thy salvation; Enter every trembling heart. 2. Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit Into every troubled breast! Let us all in Thee inherit; Let us find the promised rest. Take away the love of sinning; Alpha and Omega be; End of faith, as its beginning, Set our hearts at liberty. 3. Come, Almighty to deliver, Let us all Thy life receive; Suddenly return and never, Nevermore Thy temples leave, Thee would be always blessing, Serve Thee as Thy hosts above, Pray, and praise Thee without ceasing, Glory in Thy perfect love. 4. Finish, then, Thy new creation; Pure and spotless let us be. Let us see Thy great salvation Perfectly restored in Thee; Changed from glory into glory, Till in heaven we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before Thee, Lost in wonder, love, and praise. Amen. INVOCATION CHORAL RESPONSE 2 BIG BETHEL A.M.E. CHURCH WORSHIP THROUGH MUSIC BABCOCK-YOUNG VOICES OF UNITY THE RESPONSIVE SCRIPTURE GENESIS 17:1-7, 15-16 1 Minister: When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said to him, "I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. People: 2 And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will make you exceedingly numerous." 3 Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, Minister: 4 "As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. 5 No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations. People: 6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. 7 I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. Minister: 15 God said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16 All: I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall give rise to nations; kings of peoples shall come from her." *PREFACE TO THE DECALOGUE (IN THE TUNE OF #258) “FROM ALL THAT DWELL BELOW THE SKIES, LET THE CREATOR’S PRAISE ARISE; LET THE REDEEMER’S NAME BE SUNG, THROUGH EVERY LAND BY EVERY TONGUE.” *SUMMARY OF THE DECALOGUE GLORIA PATRI #XVII-XVIII “GLORY BE TO THE FATHER, AND TO THE SON, AND TO THE HOLY GHOST; AS IT WAS IN THE BEGINNING, IS NOW, AND EVER SHALL BE, WORLD WITHOUT END. Lord, I am sorry for my sins, and I am ready to change my life. I accept your forgiveness. I confess with my mouth that you are Lord, and I believe in my heart that God raised you from the dead; therefore, according to the word I am saved. The Bible says “if any person be in Christ he or she is a new creation, the old is passed away and behold all things become new.” Lord, I thank you for my salvation. 3 JESUS SAVES †AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only son our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead; and buried. The third day he arose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Church Universal, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sin, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen. †HOLY COMMUNION THE GENERAL CONFESSION Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all people, we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sin and wickedness which we from time to time most grievously have committed by thought, word and deed against Your divine Majesty, provoking most justly Your wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father for Your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake; forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please You in newness of life, to the honor and glory of Your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
