Dear Parents,
We hear a lot today about what is described as
Emotional Intelligence and its power to predict,
more certainly than an IQ, who will be successful
in life. This is not surprising really and in our lives
we would probably say that experience has taught
us the truth that a person who has a capacity for
empathy will be admired and respected in most
settings. A Christian education is built on the
assumption that the following of Jesus requires
the education of the heart as well as of the mind
and body and it is very much in tune with a
contemporary understanding of empathy.
Yesterday at the Investiture Mass we commissioned
our elected student leaders with a badge which
entitles them to extend their support and empathy
to the whole student community. There is no one
way of doing this and within the St. Dominic’s
Priory College setting students have been elected
to a variety of service roles, as Prefects, as Class
representatives, as House Captains and as Year
12 Seniors. Beyond that numerous co-curricular
activities will provide a way of understanding others
beyond one’s own home class.

Two Prefects, Head, Kalyna Becker and Year 11
Prefect Elena Muscat reflected for us on the gospel
reading from Matthew 5: 13 – 16, in which Jesus
uses the metaphors of salt and light to teach us how
the person true to their Christian calling might
respond to their call. Next week do yourself a
favour and read what they had to say.

Old Scholar St. Dom’s Parents and other family
members are warmly invited to the Annual Old
Scholars Mass in the Chapel on this Sunday
1st March. This is a great opportunity to get to
know those who in other generations shared your
Dominican education and to pray with and for
each other. The Mass begins at 9.30am. Afterwards
there is an informal morning tea in the Hall and the
members of the Committee will say a few words.
Tonight’s Parents and Friends Meeting is our first
on for the year and we would love to have new and
familiar faces to share what is a significant way of
contributing to your daughter’s education. Most
of you have heard our President Maria Lappas and
Vice President Michelle Hogan assure you that it is
a friendly, informative and non-pressured evening
commencing at 7.30pm in the Reception area.

Friends of the Library Club
The “Friends of the Library” is a new initiative in 2015 and
aimed at Year 5 students, to give them extra interest and
involvement in their school Library. The aims of the Club
are to:

Hope to see lots of Parents at our first 2015 meeting of the
Parents and Friends tonight in the front Office. 7.30pm.
Our Ash Wednesday liturgy was beautiful last week and we were
so proud of the reverent and engaged attitude of our students.
Our Year Five class read with great expression and were fantastic
leaders and role models for the other students. More information
coming home for our Project Compassion efforts during Lent.

Thank you to all those parents who were so generous with their
time on Thursday for our Swimming Trials. Well done to the
girls who swam so hard, often back to back. We wish we could
pick you all! Teams will be out soon.
We had lots of eager parents attend our Helping with Reading
Workshop on Friday. Thanks to Tes Rodrigues and Cate O’Leary
who facilitated. The next opportunity for parents to come and
discuss some educational ideas is our Parent Discussion Group.
This is a new initiative and we are hoping that lots of people come
along. This will be on Wednesday, March 11th. The topic this
time is Play. We have a short video and then time for discussion
and generating ideas. Come along and join in! 7.30-8.45!
Bring a friend or invite someone else from your class group.
It is not looking good for our Field Day on Friday as the weather
is going to be very warm. We will try to run events during sport
times and early on Friday before it becomes too hot.

The Year 5 students were introduced to this concept as an
important job opportunity, and were required to submit
an application outlining their interest in the position and
the qualities they would bring to the Library. There were 10
positions available.
The successful applicants were: Lisa Huynh, Alexia Kafantaris,
Abby Lapsley, Maddy Lapsley, Alessia Mazzeo, Amelia McAvaney,
Lorelie Owens, Helem Pham, Ava Scroop, and Ella Wood.
Their enthusiasm and excitement has been impressive, and
they are pictured here at their first training session. To be

Just Leadership Day
On Thursday February 12, a group of girls from the Social
Justice Group set out to attend Caritas’ Just Leadership Day,
aimed to engage with students from various schools by teaching
them the ways of a just leader. Upon arriving at the St Francis
Xavier Cathedral, we were welcomed by Megan Bourke, Caritas
Australia’s Global Education Coordinator. She engrossed us in
considering, what is justice? What is leadership? as we were
involved in several activities, requiring us to consider the
different ways by which we could make a difference in our
local school communities up to a global level. We also listened
to Lulu Mitshabu and her story of injustice based on gender
inequality. Having taken advantage of such a privilege such as
this, our Social Justice Group is revitalised as ever to increase
awareness, especially during this Lent season.

Second Week of Lent: Mariama from Niger
This week Project Compassion focuses
on Niger, where life is very tough.
Many live in extreme poverty, often
unable to afford or access food and
water.
This week we meet Mariama who
is raising her daughter in Niger,
a country that suffers widespread
poverty. When her little girl became malnourished, she
received life-saving food and care at a Nutrition Centre,
supported by Caritas Australia.
