Recently we have been discussing resilience through the school newsletter and
in classes. Resilience is about bouncing back when something does not go your
way. Many students find it difficult to cope with the “downs” in life including
when they are told “no” by a teacher, or their friends don’t want to play with
them because they are not playing fair. However we all need to learn to be
resilient and it does take time for children to learn this skill. Children develop
resilience with help from supportive adults, initially through their experiences
in coping with small stresses . When the bigger stresses come along, even
though at first they might feel quite distressed, children can draw on what they
have learned about helping themselves to cope and feel better. Looking to
others for support is an effective way of coping. Children need to be able to
trust that the world is safe and there are caring people to help them; believe in
their ability to do things for themselves and achieve their goals; feel good
about themselves and feel valued by their teachers and parents; have a
positive outlook on life and believe that things generally turn out well; and
have the ability to manage their feelings, thoughts and behaviours. Speaking to
our students in a positive and calm manner is important at Gray Primary
School as we believe this enhances their self-esteem and their resilience.
Our Year 5/6 leaders attended a Student Leadership Conference yesterday and
were complimented for their excellent manners and behaviour. During the very
wet Friday last week our students were extremely well-behaved even though
they could not play outside during recess or lunch time. Thank you students.

Library News
Welcome to another fantastic year of reading as we all know in order to get better we need to read
every day. My name is Miss Karen and I am very excited to be the Library assistant for the next six
months while Mrs. Fisher is on leave. One of the things that is different this year is that I would like to
develop Gray Primary students to visit the Library more often for this reason borrowing limits have been
reduced in class visits so they can be organized and change their books in their own lunch hours. For
those who love reading this will be a very simple task. To encourage Gray primary students to practice
their reading and enjoy our Library we have a
Caught reading Competition
I will catch students enjoying books during Library Lunch hours on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
If you are caught your name will go into the ticket box for your chance to win a canteen voucher at
Assembly. At the end of the term all names go into the draw to win a book pack.
To make the Library Monster happy please return your
overdue books from last year. Students in Library
lessons last week learnt again how to care for their
books and knew that if they lost or damaged a book
that it would cost $10.00 to buy another.
No students will be allowed to take books home until
the Library Monster is happy so please come and see
me. Payment can be made at the Front Office or
Library. Thank You

Grow Well

Palmerston Working Together
for the wellbeing of children
and young people
In 2014 representatives from community and government agencies
met to talk about how they could
work together more effectively to
improve the wellbeing of
Palmerston children and young
people. They also formed a
leadership group to drive the
project.
The leadership group currently includes representatives from Good
Beginnings Australia, Child Australia, The Smith Family, Early Childhood Australia, Headspace Darwin,
Anglicare, Red Cross, NT Family and
Schools Together Program (FAST
NT), City of Palmerston, the NT Department of Education and Palmerston City Schools. Many other organisations have expressed interest
and support for this project.
We want to understand what
‘wellbeing’ looks like for children
and young people in Palmerston.
Then we can share this infomation
and work together to create a community where children and young
people grow and live well. If we
know what influences young people’s wellbeing in Palmerston we
can improve services, advocate for
programs and influence decision
makers.

We understand there is a lack of car
parks for parents picking up their
children after school. The School
Council has a project with the
Department of Education to extend
our car park next to the soccer oval.
We are expecting this project to go
ahead this year. In the meantime we
ask parents to observe the laws and
not park on the footpaths around the
school. Parents can park in the limited
spaces in the Preschool car park or the
school car park. Parents can also park
in the church grounds opposite the
school, on the street or in the Gray
Community Hall car park providing the
hall does not have a function on in the
hall at the same time. The space in
front of the school is not a “kiss and
go” so this can be used for short term
parking.
Please be assured car park space is on
the agenda of the School Council and
we will continue to lobby for this to be
addressed.
