Rock of SAFETY
PSALM 91 IS A REMINDER THAT GOD WILL NOT ABANDON US IN TIMES OF TROUBLE
PSALM 91
Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble.
Be with me, Lord, I pray.
guarding you always and bearing you gently,
watching over your life.
You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord Most
High, who abide in the shadow of our God,
say to the Lord, "My refuge and fortress,
the God in whom I trust."
Those who cling to the Lord live secure in his
love; lifted high those who trust in his name.
Call on the Lord, he will never forsake you.
He will bring you salvation and joy.
No evil shall befall you, no pain come near,
for his angels stand close by your side,

“My refuge and my fortress, the God in whom I trust.” This is the essence of this powerful and
consoling psalm. It is possible that the psalmist is speaking on behalf of someone who has taken
refuge in the Lord, possibly within the temple precincts during a time of danger. The psalmist is
utterly confident that God’s presence will protect the people in every dangerous situation.
REFLECTION
s a passionate walker, I often spend time hiking
over the rugged land of Dartmoor in Devon.
Walking these paths is always challenging and
frequently awe-inspiring. It is easy to engage with the
deeper issues of life away from the crowds and the
demanding deadlines of work. On Dartmoor the weather
can change very quickly and walkers are warned to carry
essential equipment for emergencies. Clear blue skies
can suddenly turn to dark and threatening clouds, which
lead to low mists and dense rain. It is easy to become
disorientated and lose your way, especially if, like me,
you are a poor map reader. If you are lucky, a rare
outcrop of rocks will appear and become a welcome
place where you can find shelter and protection.
It was on one such occasion that Psalm 91 came to
mind. I was feeling tired, frustrated and a little scared,
longing for a break in the clouds to enable me to rediscover the path from which I had strayed. As I prayed
the psalm I realised that the rock against which I had
found shelter was the rock of refuge that God offers to
be for each of us. God was with me. God was protecting
me as God does. I felt a deep sense of reassuring peace
in the knowledge of God’s love for me. In my trouble God
had come to me.

It wasn’t the case that God was going to beam me
up and out of danger, like Scotty would. I would have to
wait out the storm. The difference was that I wouldn’t
be doing it alone.
This psalm reminds us that God will not abandon us
in times of trouble. It doesn’t mean that we won’t
experience problems or difficulties, but faith, hope and
trust in the Lord will help us get through them more easily.
When psalms are sung as a responsorial with a
cantor singing the verses and everyone else singing the
refrain, it is helpful if the response means something to
us. If it is easy to sing we will remember it and find
ourselves repeating it at other times by way of consolation or petition. Marty Haugen’s version of Psalm 91
has a simple refrain: “Be with me Lord, when I am in
trouble. Be with me, Lord, I pray.” This easy response is
like a mantra we can all pray, even when we cannot
remember the verses.

remaining five Sundays of Lent in the Church at
7 p.m.
The Apostolic Work group will lead the Stations on this Sunday – March 1st.

2015 ST. BRIGID'S LECTURE
Cardinal Peter Turkson will give a public lecture in St. Brigid's Church, Windsor Avenue, Belfast on at
7.30pm, Wednesday, 4th March next.
The title of the lecture is: Pope Francis and the Joy of the Gospel: The Social Dimension.
Cardinal Turkson is President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace in The Vatican. He comes
from Ghana; born in 1948, he was Archbishop of Cape Coast, Ghana, 1992-2009. Regarded as “one of
Africa's most energetic leaders” he was called to Rome by Pope Benedict XV1 to head the Church's
Council for Justice and Peace and reappointed by Pope Francis.
The subject of Cardinal Turkson's lecture is based on Pope Francis' Apostolic Exhortation on the
proclamation of the Gospel in today's world. The Cardinal will pay particular attention to the social
dimension of evangelization as outlined in Chapter Four of the Pope's document where Pope Francis
“raises social issues of great importance for the future of humanity” such as justice, care for the
vulnerable, peace, ecumenical and interreligious dialogue, religious freedom. The Pope makes explicit
the inescapable social dimension of the Gospel message and encourages all Christians to demonstrate
it by their words, attitudes and deeds.

IN JOYFUL HOPE AT ST PETER’S
The Parish Draw will take place on Thursday 5th March after the 7.00pm Mass.
All are welcome to an “In Joyful Hope” Eucharist at 7.30pm on Tuesday March 3rd in St
Peter’s Cathedral. Obeying the mandate of Jesus “Do this in Memory of Me” Catholics,
Presbyterians, Methodists and members of the Church of Ireland will worship together in this
celebration, keeping faith with our Catholic discipline. “In Joyful Hope” is a new step in Eucharistic
Communion.

CREATING PASTORAL COMMUNITIES

CRIB BOX APPEAL
The Order of Malta wish to thank everyone who contributed to the Crib Box Appeal, which raised an
amount of £205.00.
The money will be used to help the Hospital continue to give care and attention in Bethlehem and
the surrounding area. As there is no free health service the hospital relies on the voluntary
contributions and this is where the Crib Box Donations are invaluable as a means of showing
solidarity with people in need.

PARKING IN AND AROUND THE CHURCH
The Residents Committee would encourage those attending mass in Our Lady Queen of Peace to
avail of the ample car park provided.
By parking on the road or the footpath residents access to Netherlands Park is greatly impeded and
potential health and safety issues are increased. The Residents Committee along with the Sacristan
invest many hours in maintaining the green areas immediately outside the church; the fruits of their
labours are greatly reduced when persons use the green areas as a parking facility.
Let us try and exercise thoughtfulness in these areas.

BETHANY BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP is a parish based group ministry which aims
to help those bereaved and grieving. Support is offered on an individual basis in the home, to groups
in drop-in centres, by phone calls, by helping at funeral liturgies and remembrance services.
As of January 2015 there are twenty four parishes in the Diocese with Bethany Teams.

Tuesday’s Child is a catholic charity helping children and their families in areas of the world ravaged
by war and extreme poverty. Everything we do is All Through Mary for the glory of the Infant
Child. Tuesday’s Child gives 100 percent of donations received and monies raised. When you donate
online, both pay systems we use take a small % of your donation. Administration costs are covered
by a private sponsor and gift aid received goes to our projects. We work directly with catholic
missionaries in all project areas. Where monies are donated to projects run by missionary priests, we
ask for masses to be celebrated in return for Ireland.

FURNITURE APPEAL The St Vincent De Paul requires donations of good furniture and Bric-a brac
on an on going basis to assist families who are being housed and seeking help. Meeting this demand
is a constant struggle that may only be met through the public’s generosity.

SERVING AFRICA THROUGH OLD COMPUTERS
Camara are a Local Charity based in Unit 10, Townsend Enterprise Park. Belfast BT13 2 ES, who
take old computers, wipe the data, refurbish them and set them up in schools in Africa as computer
labs. Combined with accredited training courses and ongoing maintenance we have taught over half a
million young people how to use a computer. This vital skill in today's world opens up
unending opportunities for the young people whilst also building a better future for the country.
To do this amazing work we need old computers. There is huge demand from Africa
for Camara computers as we send them preloaded with software and train the teachers how to use
them. From 11th November we will run our annual "One week, One Thousand Computers" campaign.
Churches in Northern Ireland contributed over a quarter of this last year.
This annual event tries to find 1,000 unused and unwanted pcs and laptops for reuse in deprived
schools in Africa. Camara wipe and repair computers of all ages, shapes and sizes, load them with
educational software and ship them to one of Camara’s seven African Hubs where they are
distributed to the most deprived schools. We are asking people to dig out their old computers that are
gathering dust.

For your information. It costs £100 per computer to process, ship and provide the relevant training
and maintenance for a minimum of 21 children to learn how to use it over the next 3 years. Most
schools require a 25 computer suite at a cost of £2,500. Whilst we are not asking for donations

The Historic Institutional Abuse Inquiry is an independent Inquiry set up to investigate abuse
of children in residential institutions (but not schools) in Northern Ireland between 1922 and 1995.
Abuse could be sexual or physical abuse, or emotional abuse or neglect. The Inquiry has an
Acknowledgment Forum where you can come and tell experienced professionals in private, and in
confidence, about abuse you experienced. Another part of the inquiry will investigate abuse, and
then make recommendations to the Northern Ireland government. You can choose to talk to both
parts, or to either part, of the Inquiry.
If you were abused in an institution, or saw others being abused, the Inquiry wants to talk to you. It
hopes that as many people as possible who experienced abuse in institutions, or witnessed others
being abused, will come forward to help the Inquiry investigate the way these children were treated,
and what should be done about it. If you know someone who was abused encourage them to
contact us.
