The latency period from exposure to onset of symptoms can be up to 50 years. • Mesothelioma is known to be caused by exposure to asbestos. Contaminated vermiculite can still be found in 35 million attics in the United States today and has not been banned by the United States. • There is an established history of asbestos exposure in military service, and elevated risk of mesothelioma in the military population. Approximately one third of mesothelioma cases have been shown to involve exposures to Navy personnel or civilian workers in Naval shipyards. • There is only one FDA approved treatment for mesothelioma – the chemotherapy extends life by an average of only three months. • Funding for mesothelioma research is the key to the development of new treatments and potential cures. Ask #1: Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) • The CDMRP fund the best scientific and medical research aimed at eradicating diseases. • As military personnel are disproportionately affected by mesothelioma, it is of utmost importance that the Department of Defense supports the research necessary to find a cure. • We applaud Congress for including in the FY 15 budget $50 million for peer-reviewed cancer research programs, which include dollars for mesothelioma research. • We urge you to support maintenance of this funding level in the FY 16 budget to continue to elucidate treatments and cures for this deadly disease. Ask #2: Patient Registry • Currently, there is no formal registry to keep track of mesothelioma patients, their demographics, and other important information that could help identify gaps in current mesothelioma treatment. • We urge you to support The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in establishing the National Mesothelioma Patient Registry to collect the scientific data needed to evaluate existing medical services and identify resources needs for mesothelioma patients. • Information gleaned from the registry would be used to: ○○ ○○ ○○ ○○ ○○ Establish priorities for successful outcomes Develop and revise standards of care and treatment best practices for patients with mesothelioma Share evidence-based information between physicians across the country Implement benchmarks to improve care in mesothelioma clinics Identify centers that provide the most beneficial care to patients 13 map of the U.s. capitol Bus pick-up in PM Bus Drop-Off in AM group photo 14 eateries and shops Need to Rest and Relax?
