Principal’s Welcome
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members
Today and Friday, our St Joseph’s Bardon Leadership Team are away at the North Side Leadership Teams’ Symposium for 2015 at
Twin Waters on the Sunshine Coast. David Stewart will be assisting our school staff, acting as Principal whilst Louise Busby, Katie
Jordan, Amanda Gardiner, Amy Heshusius and I are away. For our leadership team this is a time to gather and engage in reflection and
formation on a topic critical to leadership of Catholic Schools. The chosen theme this year is Mission and Catholic Schools. It will be
a very positive experience to look to our year ahead for our St Joseph’s community.
This coming Monday I will be away from 8.45am to 1.30pm at a Principal’s Induction Day. Throughout 2015 I will be attending
specific days to further develop my leadership in Catholic Education.
Last Monday, our confident Year 6 leaders lead our prayer assembly with grace. The students shared their commitment and pledge for
this year ahead as they continue to let their lights shine. It was wonderful to have both Fr Peter and Fr Josen there to celebrate with us.
At our assembly, we met our school pet wombat “Mothballs” who is our mascot for our major P&F Term 1 Fundraiser: Our Read-athon. During this week’s Literature lessons with Mrs Gardiner, the promo digital clip around the excitement of reading was shared. I
encourage all our students and families to participate in this focus on reading that benefits both our students’ skills and our community
as funds raised are allocated to purchasing digital devices for our classroom context.
Thank you to the overwhelming response in attendance to the Volunteer Workshops. I have been truly impressed with the support of
our parent and caregiver community. We have already had approximately 50 parents involved in the two sessions already presented.
This coming Monday 2nd March at 2.30pm I will offer another session in the hall. As on Monday our St Joey’s Athletics Club starts, I
warmly invite any volunteers who are available to come along earlier to go through this induction or any other parents who can make
this time. Friday 6th March at 2.30pm I will offer another session in Room 16A (classroom to the left of school library). It is a very
positive time to go through in person this training to clarify understanding and to ask questions as we together create a safe learning
environment to maximize student progress.
Amy and I have finalised the placement of our Support Teacher Inclusive Education. I am overjoyed to announce that Ms Christina
Mitchell has accepted this position. Chrissie brings a depth of experience from years of classroom teaching, the context of working in
schools abroad, leadership experience as an APRE and previous experience in the STIE role. She has a passion for challenging and
supporting High End Learners and has worked in the field of Gifted Education in England. We welcome Chrissie to our St Joseph’s
Bardon community starting from the 16 th March.
One of our identified 2015 school goals: To develop a common understanding and language of learning and our commitment to
building the professional capital of our staff. The National Gifted and Talented Conference is being held in Brisbane on Thursday 19th,
Friday 20th and Saturday 21st March. As a school we have purchased a number of tickets. We are sending different staff on different
days to maximize identified sessions and these professionals will share this knowledge with their peer professionals on return. Thank
you to Sue Toole, Di Rose, Sonya Teevan, Teresa Jirasek, Mark Deegan, Sam Lewis and our new STIE Chrissie Mitchell who will
attend part/all of this conference.
Year 6 News - In June, Year 6 students will be travelling to our capital city, Canberra. In Canberra we will be
visiting many exciting places such as New and Old Parliament House, Australian War Memorial, AIS and
Questacon just to mention a few.
Over the coming weeks Year 6 will be doing a number of activities to raise money to help towards the cost of
our trip. Some of our fundraising activities are:

Selling cupcakes and cordial at our Swimming Carnival next Tuesday

Selling ice-creams starting with Years 2 to 6 next Friday and Prep and Year 1 on Tuesday

An Easter Raffle
Thank you for your support - Siena and Mia (Year 6B students)
I wish to acknowledge and thank Melinda Brockhurst and Di Rose on their energy and organisation of our Kilometre Club for
2015 which is due to start up again in Week 8 of Term 1. The generosity of time of our parent volunteers and partnership with
both Peter and Janet McFadden ensures that this fitness running program legacy continues. Start date is Wednesday 18th
March and correspondence will come home shortly.
I am really looking forward to this Tuesday’s Years 3 to 6 Swimming Carnival at the Newmarket Pool. Enormous thanks to
our HPE specialist, Christie Lewis who does an amazing job of organising this event. I encourage parents and caregivers who
are available to please see Christie if you are willing to be a volunteer. There are lots of jobs on the day, especially time
keeping. Your support ensures we run efficiently to time. I am looking forward to seeing the team mascots and seeing our
Year 6 leaders encourage that House Colour Team spirit. Prior to the Carnival, our Year 6 leaders will have an opportunity for
War Cry practice with their teams in preparation for a great day of participation at the carnival.
Best wishes, Fran
From the APRE
Lent
As a Catholic school, we have a commitment to support the Catholic organisation Caritas. During the Lenten Season,
Caritas run Project Compassion. In 2015, the Project Compassion theme is Food for Life. The educational focus will
be on global food issues and how Caritas Australia is empowering the world’s poorest people to establish sustainable food
sources for life. Each classroom has a Project Compassion Donation box for spare change and students will be encouraged to
give what they can to this worthy organisation.

Year 6 Leaders Commissioning
On Monday our Year Six students proudly led assembly and were commissioned as leaders, beacons of light, within our school
community. Father Peter blessed and presented their leadership badges with Mrs Burke. The Year Six students made the
following commitment to our school community:
As leaders of St Joseph’s in 2015, the International Year of Light, we will embrace the Franciscan values of humility, care and
respect. We will strive to reach our potential by always doing our best in all areas of school life.
We will endeavour to follow the Franciscan Way by:
Being of service to others
Being respectful and courteous
Showing a love for all
Enjoying a simple life
Being affirming and inclusive
Year 3 Mass
On Tuesday our Year Three students gathered as a Christ centred learning community for Mass with Fr Josen. It was
wonderful to also see so many parents, friends and parishioners join them for this celebration of Eucharist. The focus of the
Mass was “Who do you say that I am?”, a question Jesus asked of His Disciples. The children were able to give some
insightful responses about who Jesus is to them.
Year 2 Mass
On Tuesday 3 March our Year Two students and teachers will gather in the Church at 9:00am for Mass. We welcome families
to join Year Two for this celebration of Eucharist.

Sacrament of Reconciliation
Included with this newsletter is information from our Jubilee Parish regarding the upcoming Sacrament of Reconciliation. While
this is a Parish-based programme, we will be supporting our student’s Sacramental journey at school through prayer, Religion Curriculum links and in participation of the Retreat Day prior to the Sacrament of Reconciliation evening. The registration and parent
information session is to be held on Monday 23 March at 7pm.
There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it. (Edith Wharton)

Sacraments of Baptism and Reconciliation
Our Jubilee Parish Sacramental programme isn’t too far away. We begin our preparation
for the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Monday night, 23rd March with a Registration
and Information session beginning at 7pm at the Rosalie church.
Any child who has been baptised in the Catholic Church and who is in Year 3 or above is
eligible to participate in the preparation programme and celebrate the Sacrament of
Reconciliation.
The tradition of our Catholic Church has been to baptise children shortly after birth so
that from the start they can grown up within the family of the Church. Occasionally, for
many different reasons, a young child misses out on being baptised. Not wanting to
diminish the importance of this sacrament, while, at the same time, wanting to provide
some form of preparation so that the child understands what is happening, we have
traditionally run a preparation course (for older children) during Lent so that we can
celebrate the baptism on Easter Sunday. These preparation classes take place during the
first part of our Sunday masses during the 6 weekend’s of Lent.
If you have any questions or would like to be involved, please contact Jenny Donnelly, our
Jubilee Sacramental Coordinator at [email protected] or talk to one of our parish
priests. More information can be also found on our webpage: www.jubileeparish.com
Parent-Teacher Interviews March 2015
Dear Parents,
Parent-Teacher interviews will be held for Prep to Year 6 from Monday 16th March to Friday
27th March
Interviews will be of 15 minutes duration.
Bookings will be open from Monday 2nd March
For these interviews we are again using the internet-based booking system Parent Teacher
On-Line (PTO).
Please access the system as follows:

Go to the school’s home page: http://www.stjosephsbardon.qld.edu.au and click on
the Parent Teacher Online link available on the right hand menu.

When the PTO page opens, click on Obtain PIN/Password, enter the primary email
address that is registered with the school and you login details will be emailed to you.
This email will also contain the link you will need to access the PTO login page.
Full instructions are provided to you after log in. Please note the following points:

When you log on, the system displays only your own child/children. Bookings are made
for individual parents/guardians, not for couples.

You will only see time slots that are available at the time you are using the system. As
time slots are booked for teachers, those time slots are no longer displayed as
available. PTO prevents double-booking of teachers or parents/guardians.

When you have made all the bookings you require, you can download or email a report
of your bookings in time order for printing. You can log in and change bookings up to
7am of the day prior to your scheduled bookings.

Other parents may be making bookings at the same time that you are using the system.
It is possible, though unlikely, that a time slot is displayed to you as available, but is
then booked by another parent shortly afterwards. If you then attempt to book this time
slot it will not be available and a message will be displayed to indicate this.

If you encounter any problems using PTO please contact the school office on 3369
3020 or by emailing Amanda Gardiner [email protected]
I am sure the system will be of benefit to students, parents and staff. Any feedback you may
wish to provide will be most welcome.

ACTIVE SCHOOL TRAVEL
ACTIVE TRAVEL WEDNESDAY MORNINGS
We had our first Walking Wheeling Wednesday for 2015 this week, and the results of our first “hands up” survey will
be included in next week’s newsletter. Have a look and see if your class was one of the top three active travel
classes in the school!
There will be a trophy awarded at the Monday morning assembly on 23rd March for the class with the most active
school travellers in Term 1. If you haven’t yet worked out your preferred active school travel mode, have a look at the
list below for ideas and remember that EVERY Wednesday is now Walking Wheeling Wednesday.
How will you actively travel to school?
Walk
Leave the car at home and walk your kids to school. If you live too far away, drive part of the way and walk the rest.
We call that “Park and Stride”, and suggest the Goodlife gym or Bowman Park as good options.
Cycle or Scooter
Ride or scooter with your children to school. It’s legal to ride on the footpath and remember to always have your
helmet secured. For those who need it, the bike rack is in front of the after care building near the staff car park.
Public Transport
Public transport is easy once you know how. For bus timetables, visit www.translink.com.au, or phone 13 12 30.
Carpool
Find a friend and carpool to school. It’s an easy way to save money and time. Talk to other parents in your child’s
class or at music and sport to see who is going your way.
If you are interested in helping out, please come to one of our Active School Travel meetings, the next one is on at
2pm on Tuesday 28th April (meet at the office), or contact Christine Brown
425561 or [email protected]
(AST Coordinator) on 0406
Year
6B students will be selling
ice cream cones to Years 2 to 6
next Friday for $1 at the
tuckshop.
All profits will go towards the Year
6B Canberra trip.
Thank you for supporting us.
‘Care and Concern’
The ‘Care and Concern’ group continues this year to support families at their time of
need. This can be in the form of meals, transport, grocery shopping, ironing or
whatever activity best would help the family. Any assistance given is completely
confidential and anonymous.
You can get assistance by asking the office or through your class representative. If you are a friend of a family that might
need assistance, please ask them if they would like some help and let the office know.
As we have new families to the school and some that have left, I am starting a new contact list of helpers. All of the old list is
being discarded, so if interested in helping please send your email address and class of oldest child to: Cath Hargraves
email [email protected]
The P&F are happy to share with you all our monthly meeting agenda a week prior to our meetings in the school
newsletter. The P&F are hoping that this will give you all the opportunity to view the month’s agenda items. We encourage
you also to provide any suggestions/feedback to the Committee on the agenda items. This is also a fantastic opportunity to
invite you to come along to our meetings if there is a particular agenda item that might interest you.
If you have any suggestions/feedback for our future agendas please email Nicole Scarcella on [email protected]
or call on 0413 180 083.
