Annie Hall
NEW CARROLLTON BRANCH
Thursday, April 2, 1 pm (PG, 94 minutes)
Woody Allen's romantic comedy of the
Me Decade follows the up and down
relationship of two mismatched New York
neurotics. Jewish comedy writer Alvy
Singer (Woody Allen) ponders the modern
quest for love and his past romance with
singer Annie Hall (Diane Keaton). The film
has long been a favorite of academics,
who have studied the way it portrays
the stereotypes of gender differences
in sexuality, the presentation of Jewish
identity, and the elements of psychoanalysis
and modernism. Annie Hall also won four
Academy Awards, including Best Picture
and Best Original Screenplay. Sponsored by
the Friends of the New Carrollton Library.
Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address
Bowie Branch
Adults and Teens, Monday, March 2, 7 pm
On March 4, 1865, Abraham Lincoln delivered his second inaugural address in front of the Capital
Building in Washington, DC. The Civil War, raging for four years, was nearing its end, and Lincoln’s
focus was on that issue. Lincoln’s desire was to welcome the Southern States back into the Union.
Neither vindictive nor with malice, Lincoln’s objective was reunification in both spirit and deed.
Join us as John Elliff of the Lincoln Group of Washington, DC, discusses what many consider to be
the greatest speech in American History. Following Mr. Elliff, Dominique Dempsey, a student from
Woodstream Academy, will deliver Lincoln’s address from 150 years ago.

Hoopla Film Event: CHOPS
GLENARDEN BRANCH
Saturday, April 18, 2 pm (Not Rated, 88 minutes)
Each year, Jazz at Lincoln Center and its artistic director,
Wynton Marsalis, host the prestigious Essentially Ellington
Festival, a competition of high school jazz bands from across
the country. CHOPS, a documentary film, follows the members
of the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts jazz ensemble as
they prepare for and then perform in this elite competition.
CHOPS was an official selection of the Tribeca Film Festival, and
has won Best of Festival Prizes from Florida to Alaska.
When Ford unveiled the Mustang at the 1964 New York
World’s Fair on April 17, 1964, America fell in love with it.
But many felt there was something lacking: a precision and
high performance engine. Carroll Shelby, who had a company
devoted to upgrading standard models into high performance
racing cars, took on that task, and unveiled his version in 1965.
Join us as Stephen Tapper, of the Mustang Club of Maryland,
discusses the history of the Shelby Mustang. Following
Mr. Tapper’s presentation will be a Mustang Rally in the library’s
parking lot.

Folklife and Faraway Places Film Series: Silkwood
NEW CARROLLTON BRANCH
Thursday, March 5, 1 pm (*R, 128 minutes)
Directed by Mike Nichols, Silkwood was
inspired by the life of labor activist Karen
Silkwood (Meryl Streep). When her fellow
employees at the Kerr-McGee plutonium
plant are exposed to radiation, Silkwood
begins to investigate the company. On
the night that she died in a suspicious car
accident in 1974, Silkwood was on her way

Bloody Sunday and the Selma Marches
Bowie Branch
Adults & Teens, Saturday, March 7, 2 pm
Fifty years ago, on March 7, 1965, peaceful demonstrators
gathered in Selma, Alabama, to march to the state capital in
Montgomery, Alabama. Having crossed the Pettus Bridge in
Selma, they were attacked by state and local police, many of
whom were mounted, and armed with billy clubs and tear
gas. Television covered the attack as the demonstrators were
severely beaten and dispersed. A second march was aborted
two days later, though without violence. A third and successful
march was carried out two weeks later on March 21. But
March 7 would forever be known as Bloody Sunday. Join us as
Professor Bonner, of the University of Maryland, discusses the
significance of the marches and Bloody Sunday.
