Dear Parents, Caregivers & Whānau,
Kia ora!
Upcoming Events:
A big thank you to everyone involved in
the recent Athletics Day last Friday.
March
The weather was perfect for the event
and it was great to see students getting
involved. In fact, student participation
was so high that we ran out of time to
complete the 100m and relays.

We’re now halfway through Term 1.
Next week is week 6 of a ten-week term. This is always a difficult stage of
the year as we try to balance the important co-curricular activities (e.g.
swimming sports, athletics days, leadership days) with teaching and
learning; especially as internal assessments begin.
If you have a child in the senior school they may be feeling this pressure.
This is a ‘positive tension’ because all of the events (and assessments) are
valuable in their own right. As a parent it’s a good moment to help your
child develop his/her time management. Good questions to ask include:
- what commitments (e.g. sports, ballet, etc.) do you have this week?
- what internal assessments are due this week or next?
- have you written these into your student planner?
- do you need a hand with anything?

Parenting is the art of letting go (gradually). It’s about helping our children
to learn the skills (e.g. time management) and attitudes to succeed in life.
As much as possible help your child to manage their time/work by him or
herself … and then be there to help when asked.
We’re all in this together … student – school - parents/whānau. If you need advice about how to help your child
or information about their work, contact his/her teachers or Dean by email.
In two weeks’ time we will have the Education Review Office (ERO) visit the college. ERO is an independent
agency that reviews how well schools’ are meeting the national educational guidelines (NEG’s) and national
administrative guidelines (NAG’s). In plain English – they review how well we provide a quality education to your
child(ren). We know we are and look forward to telling them our story. This review will help inform our own selfreview process as we keep looking for ways to continually improve. We’ll keep you informed.
Finally congratulations to our rowers. You did us and yourselves very proud at the Head of the Harbour regatta.
See below for the outstanding results of our crews.

Hui Mātua (Māori Parents’ Evening)
We are holding a welcome hui for all parents of Māori students on Friday, 6th March at 6pm in the Staffroom.
This is to welcome our new year 9 Māori akonga (students). It is a very informal evening … lots of food and no
speeches.
The Gateway Programme
The Gateway Programme is up and running for 2015. This allows students to explore career ideas and to achieve
unit standard assessments which can contribute towards industry recognised qualifications such as
apprenticeships. A group of year 12 and 13 students have started their preparation by attending various training
courses during the last few weeks.
Last year 15 students participated in The Warehouse’s Red Shirts in Schools Programme at Sylvia Park and this
year another group will start in term 2. The students spend ten days on the shop floor learning about a retail
operation as well as providing customer service and dealing with all the challenges of being in a work place for the
first time.
De’Arna Griffiths in year 12 student started work experience last week with Watersafe Auckland. She will achieve
a recognised swim teacher qualification through this work experience. This is a first for the college.
The school is funded for a limited number of Gateway places each year by the Tertiary Education Committee.
Interested students should speak to their year level Dean to check if the programme is appropriate for them.

Parent Portal
For all parents/caregivers of students new to the school we would like to advise you of our Parent and Student
Portal. This online platform will provide direct access to our SMS (Student Management System). It gives you
information about your child's attendance, timetable, NCEA results, fees and other information.
It’s also where we publish students’ academic reports through the year. We no longer provide printed copies of
reports unless certified copies are required. Be advised that the previous year's reports are no longer available
once the new year's reports are published.
To access the portal, users will need to enter a username and password. The username (for parents/caregivers
and students) is the student's school ID number. Each user has an individual password. These passwords cannot
be changed by the user. It is vital that you keep a copy of the email that will be sent to you as it will contain your
private password.
The link to the portal is: https://glendowie.mystudent.school.nz/ The portal may also be accessed via our mobile
app or via a link on the Glendowie College website home page under the orange STUDENT/PARENTS banner.

Athletics Sports Day
Athletics Day 2015 will be remembered for the great atmosphere and better than ever participation rates.
Almost every student in the school came along dressed in house colours and ready to compete in at least one or
two of their favourite field or track events.
Because of the huge numbers of competitors we had to hold multiple heats of popular events and as a result
didn't have time to fit every race in to the six hours of school day available. That’s a good problem to have,
showing that Glendowie students are keen to have a go at every sporting opportunity, and we will hold the extra
finals in the next few days.

Rowing Success – Head of Harbour Regatta
The annual Head of the Harbour Rowing Regatta at Luke Pupuke is regarded as the Auckland Secondary School
Rowing Championships and the Glendowie College Rowing Squad continued their climb up the rankings. Building
on their successes from 2014, our rowers have been clocking up hours on the water and in the gym, training for
up to thirteen times each week in preparation for the North Island and New Zealand Championships.
It was exciting to be a spectator on the shores of Lake Pupuke, joining in the cheering crowd as time and time
again Glendowie rowers crossed the line in first place to win a total of nine division one races and to be placed as
5th school overall.

International Student Homestays
International students at Glendowie College are valued for the cultural diversity that they add to the
school and local community. Currently we are short of homestays for these students.
If you have a spare room and would like to earn some extra income and host one of our International
students please contact Barbara on (09) 294 7665 or 027 249 1224 to find out more.
Summerfest
Summerfest has been very successful again this year with a wide range of Arts activities for students to
participate in. Monday saw the beginning of the Glendowie College giant doodle, the Year 13 painting
students’ animation and the start of the photo challenge. Serenaded by our wonderful concert band,
the activities got off to an enthusiastic but rather wet start. The rest of the week has seen us bathed in
sun. Students have doodled to themes of food and space amongst others, whilst we have melodies
from the stage band and taken selfies with the costumed drama students. Banana art provided
everyone with artistic and nutritional satisfaction on Thursday. On Monday the giant doodle will be
unrolled for all to see.
