Owen Mackney
Business Unit Leader
“The Midlands Assurance business is a
major force within PwC. We have clients
ranging from small companies to
multinational corporations and
government organisations and we recruit,
develop and retain the highly talented
people to provide outstanding client
service.
The growth opportunities in each office are
significant – right across our Assurance
business – and so it’s a dynamic and
exciting place to be. It’s my privilege to lead
the Midlands team and attracting high
quality talent to support our growth
ambitions is one of my major priorities.
We have put together this brief document to
tell you about our business and the office in
Birmingham, to give you some perspectives
from our people, highlight aspects of the
professional development and support
available and the social side at PwC and
also share some examples of the great work
we do in our communities.”
What the region has to offer
Shopping
All three cities have their own distinct shopping experiences:
• Nottingham offers top fashion brands like Paul Smith, high end
high street as well as fabulous independent boutiques
• Leicester has something to suit all tastes, from the Highcross
luxury retail complex to historical markets
• Derby has an impressive Westfield shopping centre as well as
more bespoke shopping in the Cathedral Quarter
Culture
The East Midlands has an abundance of history, architecture and
outdoor pursuits on offer. Each city and the surrounding area has
well established points of historical interest, such as castles and
cathedrals. There are numerous opportunities to be outside, hiking
or biking in the Peak District, National Forest or Sherwood Forest;
you can even go swinging like a monkey at Go Ape.
There are plenty of local offerings at farmers markets throughout
the region, as well as food and drink festivals across the year. The
annual Nottingham Robin Hood Beer and Cider festival offers the
world’s biggest selection of draught cask conditioned beers and over
200 real ciders and perries.

What the region has to offer (continued)
Nightlife
If all the great stuff to do in the day hasn’t worn you out, night time
offers the opportunity to see a different side of Derby, Leicester and
Nottingham.
As university cities, all three have a great range of real ale pubs, bars
and nightclubs, as well as restaurants offering fine dining.
All three cities have a flourishing live music scene and opportunities
for alternative nights out at comedy clubs, theatre performances and
national tours.
Sports
There is no need to choose just one sport to follow in the East
Midlands, as there is a plethora of opportunities to see great
professional teams across a variety of sports. From seeing the Tigers
play rugby, watch the Rams play football or experience the Panthers
play ice hockey, there is always someone to be cheering for.
We hold client and team social events throughout the year, giving
everyone the opportunity to experience different sporting events.

A dynamic environment
We are privileged to work with many brand-defining
clients, gaining real insight into they work. We firmly
believe the market penetration we offer is unrivalled and
allows us to add more value. There is real opportunity to
take responsibility from day one.
Many of our clients have an international presence and
we are linked with other PwC offices right across the
world. There are many opportunities to travel across
Europe, the US, Middle East and even further afield.
We are well represented across all industries and sectors,
and have a national centre of excellence in automotive
(working with Ford, Toyota, Rolls Royce and Caterpillar)
and education (working with the University of Derby,
University of Nottingham and the Open University), as
well as significant experience in the retail space (clients
include Holland & Barrett, Paul Smith, Selfridges, Boots,
Games Workshop and Dunelm).

Senior Manager
Working in teams on a variety of clients everyone has
the opportunity to contribute. We offer the opportunity
to develop, your commercial acumen and technical
abilities as part of a collaborative working
environment.
Our offices are conveniently located close to the M1
– you can even walk straight to the airport to jet off for
a weekend away.
I genuinely enjoyed my previous role at a mediumsized firm, but when I qualified I was keen to
build my skill-set in a new environment that
offered a more varied experience and the
opportunity for quick progression.
I’ve never regretted my decision to do something
different as my role at PwC has allowed me to
work with a broader range of clients and
undertake different cycles of experience and
international travel, at the same time as being
based close to home and family.
PwC is a fantastic place in order to develop
yourself both professionally and personally.
I came from a smaller firm which gave me a great
foundation in accounting and auditing, however,
PwC has allowed me to experience different
approaches to audit as well as giving me new
experiences.
In recent years I have been a people manager to
both new graduates and experienced hires, a
group leader working with the Midlands
leadership team and been promoted from senior
associate to manager and then to senior manager.
The people here are great to work with and if you
are willing to embrace life and work at PwC East
Midlands, the opportunities are really there to
take.

get together and have fun.
We have a social club which organises a myriad of
differing events, including first Friday drinks and
ultra-competitive cake baking competitions,
augmented by quizzes and more relaxed evenings
cheering on sporting events such as the Olympics,
Wimbledon and other world tournaments.
We take part in a thriving array of charitable events,
including One Firm One Day which involved more than
75 partners and staff, and the PwC Pantomime. We are
proud to play an active role in our community
volunteering hundreds of work hours each year.
