It’s not easy getting ready for the seder, and without question no holiday requires a greater financial investment! (Passover foods never cost less this year than last.) But when all is said and done, I think it’s time and money well spent. When everyone is gathered around the seder table, it feels good to know we are continuing a tradition that dates back more than 3,000 years. But making that seder experience meaningful to everyone at the table — and especially our children — calls for some careful planning. Over the years, we’ve developed some new traditions in our family that I’d like to share with you. Adding one or two of them — or some ideas of your own — will make your seder more enjoyable and thought-provoking than ever. 1. After the children sing the traditional Four Questions, I frequently ask each child around our table to ask me his or her own question. “If you could ask one question about Passover or the seder, what would you ask?” 2. When making your matzah balls this year, put a raisin in six of them. When the soup is served, announce that everyone who finds a raisin in his or her matzah ball has to describe the most memorable Passover (seder or holiday) they ever experienced! 3. When you open the door for Elijah (heralding our hope for the coming of the Messiah) and sing “Eliyahu haNavi,” go around the table and ask everyone: “If you could wish for one thing to be different in the world between this Passover and the next, what would it be?” 4. After singing “Dayenu,” ask everyone: “If you could thank God for one thing in your life, what would that be?” It may not be possible to do all these things at one seder, so spread them out and add your own ideas to personalize Passover for everyone around the table. And, of course, never overlook the importance of using Haggadot that are modern, colorful and written in clear English. A great Haggadah can in-and-of-itself make an ordinary seder into something truly wonderful! (The Beth Yeshurun Gift Shop has many attractive Haggadot to consider, and of course others are available in local stores and online. Even Amazon.com has them!) By planning ahead and finding new ways to include adults and children in these activities, you can bring new life to your seder and make this year’s Passover celebration the sweetest and most interactive yet. Marcie joins me in wishing you a Hag Kasher v’Sameach! 1 Shabbat Services for Families with Children SATURDAY, MARCH 7 9:00-10:00am Jr. Congregation (Ages 8-11) Next Service: 9:00-10:00am March 28 (Annual Newborn Blessing at 9:30am Sanctuary Service) 9:30-10:30am Tot Shabbat (Ages 0-4) Next Service 9:30-10:30am May 2 (no Tot Shabbat in April) 10:15am Young Children’s Shabbat Shalom (parents welcome) Every Shabbat morning at 10:15am Shabbat Services WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4 - Erev Purim Megillah Readings - See page 6 for details FRIDAY, MARCH 13 6:00pm Kinder Shabbat (Ages 0-5) Next Service 6:00pm May 8 (no Kinder Shabbat in April) FRIDAY, MARCH 6 - Candlelighting Time 6:06pm 5:30pm J.B. Up to then, his great passion was in the study of American Civilizaon. But when he began teaching American Jewish history, it opened up a world of study that has consumed him ever since, and made him a noted authority and popular speaker on anything and everything about American Jewry. Dr. Whiield holds the Max Richter Chair in American Civilizaon at Brandeis, but his excellence as a scholar and teacher has led to invitaons to teach at universies elsewhere, including France, Belgium, Germany and Israel. In 1993, Whiield won the university's Louis D. Brandeis Prize for Excellence in Teaching, and in 2008 he won the Student Union Teaching Award. We are delighted to welcome this very gied speaker‐scholar to Beth Yeshurun! This weekend is sponsored in part by the Rabbi’s Circle represenng the collecve generosity of some of Beth Yeshurun’s most devoted members. The evenings begin at 6:30pm with a tradtional Kabbalat service lead by a member. Everyone brings a tasty Hannah Hofrichter teaches her dish, either parve or dairy. Couples, daughter Razele the blessing singles, parents, grandparents and for Shabbat candles children enjoy lively conversation around the dinner tables after the service. We enjoy meeting new people! For more information, please send an email to [email protected]. In Beth Yeshurun’s Museum Minyan, both men and women lead services, read Torah and Haftarah, and deliver divrei Torah. Shabbat morning services begin at 9:15am and have a warm and traditional feel. Sometimes religious people tend to place service to God over people. If God’s wishes and people’s needs conflict, God is Number One; sorry, folks, but you are number two. Generally Judaism doesn’t work like this. In morning prayers, we ask God for grace, love and compassion, b’einekha uv’einei khol ro’einu, both in Your sight and in the sight of all who see us. You can’t live a Jewish life apart from people, or even the opinions of people. Usually, sincere commitment to Jewish life and faith in God will be respected even by Jews who don’t share it. But there are rare occasions where you have to choose between fidelity to God and Jewish practice and the demands of people, even those you respect and whose respect you want. We have to strike a balance: love of other people goes with love of God. Other people too are chelek Eloha mi’ma’al (Job 31:2), a portion of God from above. It goes without saying that not all religious groups have absorbed this lesson. God forbid that we should fail to remember it!
