Rabbi David Rosen
elebrating Passover with family and good friends makes
it my favorite holiday, as I know it does for many. It’s not
easy getting ready for the seder, and without question no
holiday requires a greater financial investment! (Passover foods never cost less this
year than last.) But when all is said and done, I think it’s time and money well spent.
When everyone is gathered around the seder table, it feels good to know
we are continuing a tradition that dates back more than 3,000 years. But making
that seder experience meaningful to everyone at the table — and especially our
children — calls for some careful planning.
Over the years, we’ve developed some new traditions in our
family that I’d like to share with
you. Adding one or two of them —
or some ideas of your own — will
make your seder more enjoyable
and thought-provoking than ever.
1. After the children sing the traditional Four Questions, I frequently
ask each child around our table to
ask me his or her own question. “If
you could ask one question about Passover or the seder, what would you ask?”
2. When making your matzah balls this year, put a raisin in six of them.
When the soup is served, announce that everyone who finds a raisin in his or
her matzah ball has to describe the most memorable Passover (seder or holiday)
they ever experienced!
3. When you open the door for Elijah (heralding our hope for the coming of
the Messiah) and sing “Eliyahu haNavi,” go around the table and ask everyone:
“If you could wish for one thing to be different in the world between this Passover
and the next, what would it be?”
4. After singing “Dayenu,” ask everyone: “If you could thank God for one
thing in your life, what would that be?”
It may not be possible to do all these things at one seder, so spread them out
and add your own ideas to personalize Passover for everyone around the table.
And, of course, never overlook the importance of using Haggadot that are
modern, colorful and written in clear English. A great Haggadah can in-and-of-itself
make an ordinary seder into something truly wonderful! (The Beth Yeshurun Gift
Shop has many attractive Haggadot to consider, and of course others are available
in local stores and online. Even Amazon.com has them!)
By planning ahead and finding new ways to include adults and children in
these activities, you can bring new life to your seder and make this year’s Passover
celebration the sweetest and most interactive yet.
Marcie joins me in wishing you a Hag Kasher v’Sameach!

Beth Yeshurun Scholar in Residence Weekend
American Jews in American
History — and the Wonderful
Role We've Played!
with
Dr. Steven Whitfield
Stephen Whiield's interest in
American Jewish history began
when Brandeis University
assigned him to teach a course in
it. Up to then, his great passion
was in the study of American
Civilizaon. But when he began
teaching American Jewish
history, it opened up a world of
study that has consumed him
ever since, and made him a
noted authority and popular
speaker on anything and
everything about American
Jewry.
Dr. Whiield holds the Max
Richter Chair in American
Civilizaon at Brandeis, but his
excellence as a scholar and
teacher has led to invitaons to
teach at universies elsewhere,
including France, Belgium,
Germany and Israel. In 1993,
Whiield won the university's
Louis D. Brandeis Prize for
Excellence in Teaching, and in
2008 he won the Student Union
Teaching Award.
We are delighted to welcome
this very gied speaker‐scholar
to Beth Yeshurun!

2015 – PASSOVER – SHAVUOT 5775
With the approach of the Passover/Shavuot season, we recall the everlasting attachments to our beloved relatives
and friends who have departed. We remember the bonds of kinship and friendship that linked their lives to ours.
IN MEMORIAM is dedicated in reverent and grateful tribute to the loyal and courageous pioneers of Traditional
Judaism, whose names will be forever enshrined in our hearts and in the annals of Beth Yeshurun.
Yizkor will be recited in the morning on Saturday, April 11, 2015. To assure that the IN MEMORIAM book is
printed and ready for distribution, all names to be memorialized must be submitted on the form below to arrive in
the synagogue office by Friday, March 13th. Names received after March 13, 2015 cannot be printed in the
memorial book, but will be included on an addendum sheet.
A minimum contribution of $15.00 per name is suggested. Your generosity in increasing your last year's
contribution will be greatly appreciated. A separate form is necessary for each contributor. Additional forms can be
found on the CBY website and the synagogue office.

Museum Minyan potluck dinners a success
Loving God, loving people
The Museum Minyan’s Potluck
dinner celebrates Shabbat by
gathering members, friends, family
and newcomers to a Friday Kabbalat
service and Shabbat meal in a
member’s home.
The evenings begin at 6:30pm
with a tradtional Kabbalat service lead
by a member. Everyone brings a tasty
Hannah Hofrichter teaches her dish, either parve or dairy. Couples,
daughter Razele the blessing
singles, parents, grandparents and
for Shabbat candles
children enjoy lively conversation
around the dinner tables after the service. We enjoy meeting
new people! For more information, please send an email to
[email protected].
In Beth Yeshurun’s Museum Minyan, both men and women
lead services, read Torah and Haftarah, and deliver divrei Torah.
Shabbat morning services begin at 9:15am and have a warm and
traditional feel.
Sometimes religious people tend to place service to God
over people. If God’s wishes and people’s needs conflict,
God is Number One; sorry, folks, but you are number two.
Generally Judaism doesn’t work like this. In morning
prayers, we ask God for grace, love and compassion,
b’einekha uv’einei khol ro’einu, both in Your sight and in
the sight of all who see us. You can’t live a Jewish life apart
from people, or even the opinions of people.
Usually, sincere commitment to Jewish life and faith in
God will be respected even by Jews who don’t share it. But
there are rare occasions where you have to choose between
fidelity to God and Jewish practice and the demands of
people, even those you respect and whose respect you want.
We have to strike a balance: love of other people goes
with love of God. Other people too are chelek Eloha mi’ma’al
(Job 31:2), a portion of God from above. It goes without
saying that not all religious groups have absorbed this lesson.
God forbid that we should fail to remember it!
Join us in the Greenfield Chapel where we work at this
goal daily.
- Rabbi Daniel Horwitz

100 Jewish Men - now in it’s 13th year!
Many of the members of One Hundred Jewish Men after their January 21st program. Now in its 13th year, Congregation Beth
Yeshurun’s One Hundred Jewish Men is a group of men dedicated to improving themselves and each other as men, fathers,
husbands, brothers, sons, friends and Jews. Through controversial, thought-provoking speakers, and small group discussions,
we explore what usually remains unspoken in men’s lives at work and at home. For more information, please contact Rabbi
Brian Strauss. Photo by Marc Nathan
