During the Civil War, Lincoln and his family resided in the cottage, located just over three miles north of the White House, from June through November during the years 1862-1864. Lincoln commuted to Washington daily by horseback or carriage, and enjoyed spending time with his family at this breeze-swept pastoral refuge where he met with Cabinet members, political allies and adversaries alike. Most importantly, Lincoln developed the Emancipation Proclamation here. He last rode out to the site three days before his assassination. This year the nation is marking the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s assassination.
