~ Please pray for all the faithful departed ~
The 2nd Sunday of Lent always has a Gospel passage about
the Transfiguration of Jesus. Like Peter, at times, we want
to respond to the presence of God by making a quick
response, such as “Let us make three tents”! The Lord may
not want us to respond so quickly, just to have something to
say or do. Rather, God the Father speaks to us and says,
“This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Listening to Jesus
is to become more and more attuned to him in prayer, so
that we can allow his commandments, his will for us, to
mold and shape our ways of thinking. To listen to Jesus, is
to strengthen our wills, by choosing to reject making
temptation into sin, and by choosing the good, so that
Divinity can grasp and shine through our humanity. This
week reflect on how you are preparing to renew your
baptismal promises at Easter.
Father Lee Roos
R ITE
OF
S UNDAY M ASS AND THE
C HRISTIAN I NITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)
What is a “Scrutiny”? The scrutinies, which are solemnly
celebrated on Sundays and are reinforced by an exorcism,
are rites for self-searching and repentance and have above
all a spiritual purpose. The scrutinies are meant to uncover,
then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts
of the elect (the unbaptized preparing for Christian
initiation at the Easter Vigil); to begin to bring out, then
strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good. The
scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the elect from
the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against
temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is the
way, the truth, and the life. These rites, therefore, should
complete the conversion of the elect and deepen their
resolve to hold fast to Christ and to carry out their decision
to love God above all. (RCIA #141)
The scrutiny rites are celebrated on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th
Sundays of Lent and will be celebrated at Masses on
Saturdays, 5:30pm and Sundays, 7:30, 9:30, and 11:30am
on March 7-8, 14-15, and 21-22.
Pray for our elect, Catholics who are completing their
initiation sacraments, and candidates for full communion in
the Church as they approach the initiation sacraments at
Easter.
All men of the parish are invited to the 6th annual diocesan
Men’s Conference on Saturday, March 7th. This year’s
conference – V ictory over the Common Enemy – will

Neal Lozano exploring the nature of sin and evil, and how
we can gain victory over them. Breakfast, lunch and Mass
with Bishop Loverde will be included. Registration is now
open. Please note the new conference location: Foxchase
Manor in Manassas. Go to www.arlingtondiocese.org/men
for more details or to register.
2015 B ISHOP ’ S L ENTEN APPEAL
For the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal, we
have 769 pledges, for a total of
$250,496. This is 64% of our parish
goal of $390,000. Thank you to all
who have responded. Pledge
envelopes are available in the
church vestibule. Offices and
ministries receiving funding from the 2015 Bishop’s
Lenten Appeal include: Office of Vocations, pr omoting
an awareness of God’s call to the priesthood. For the 40
seminarians currently discerning the priesthood, the Office
of Vocations provides room, board, tuition and health
expenses, along with mentoring them in their spiritual,
academic and pastoral formation. Additionally, the Office
of Vocations fosters priestly and religious vocations
through programs that provide one-on-one guidance and
vocation awareness events. Funding for the permanent
diaconate program and elderly clergy in their retirement is
also provided by the BLA. • Catholic Charities, Victim
Assistance and Other Charitable Works to Support
Individuals and Families in Need. Catholic Char ities
has more than 15 programs that serve the poor, imprisoned,
the elderly, the hungry and most vulnerable and needy
among us. Catholic Charities coordinates Christ House
shelter for men, Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, adoption
services, pregnancy services, prison ministry, family
transitional housing, provides financial emergency
assistance and more. • The Victims' Assistance Office is
staffed by trained, compassionate social workers who are
equipped to deal with reports of abuse and offer counseling
and other resources to victims of abuse.

Lenten Challenge
“When giving alms, do not let your left hand see what
your right hand is doing.” ~ Mt 6:3
Each week, before you go to Mass, take a one, a five, and a ten
dollar bill, fold each separately and put all three in your pocket.
As you are entering church, without looking, place one of the
folded bills in the Poor Box.
Churches throughout the area are participating in 40 Days
for Life. Until Sunday, March 29th, our community will be
uniting our prayer and fasting with others across North
America for a massive coordinated pro-life mobilization
during 40 days for an end to abortion! This timing during
Lent is a great way to offer sacrifice and prayers, grow
spiritually during Lent, and make a positive change in the
community, too! To sign up for sidewalk prayer, see the
table in the church narthex.
If each parishioner at All Saints does this during Lent, the St.
Vincent de Paul Society will ease the burden and anxiety of a
multitude of Manassas residents facing financial emergency.
Providing such basic necessities as food, shelter, heat,
medication, is an ongoing challenge for the over 250/per month
callers seeking assistance. The Vincentians rely on your
generosity, need your help, and depend on your prayers.
If you are experiencing a financial emergency, please call: 703368-2429; Spanish speakers: 703-393-1483. If you would like to
learn more about the St. Vincent de Paul Society, please call 571264-5750 or 703-626-1833.
