Do not be afraid to dream of great things!” 29. “There is so much noise in the world! May we learn to be silent in our hearts and before God.” 30. “We must restore hope to young people, help the old, be open to the future, spread love. Be poor among the poor. We need to include the excluded and preach peace.” 31. “Dear young people, you have many plans and dreams for the future. But, is Christ at the center of each of your plans and dreams?” 32. “Every time we give in to selfishness and say ‘No’ to God, we spoil his loving plan for us.” 33. “The true disciple of the Lord commits himself personally to a charitable ministry whose scope is man’s multiform and endless poverty.” 34. “Our prayer cannot be reduced to an hour on Sundays. It is important to have a daily relationship with the Lord.” 35. “Today people are suffering from poverty, but also from lack of love.” 36. “We cannot be Christians part-time. If Christ is at the center of our lives, he is present in all that we do.” 37. “I say that politics is the most important of the civil activities and has its own field of action, which is not that of religion. Political institutions are secular by definition and operate in independent spheres. All my predecessors have said the same thing, for many years at least, albeit with different accents. I believe that Catholics involved in politics carry the values of their religion within them, but have the mature awareness and expertise to implement them. The Church will never go beyond its task of expressing and disseminating its values, at least as long as I’m here.” 38. “I believe in God, not in a Catholic God, there is no Catholic God, there is God and I believe in Jesus Christ, his incarnation.” 39. “Let us ask the Lord for the grace not to speak badly of others, not to criticize, not to gossip, but rather to love everyone.” 40. “Proselytism is solemn nonsense, it makes no sense. We need to get to know each other, listen to each other and improve our knowledge of the world around us.” 41. “It is so important to listen! Husbands and wives need to communicate to bring happiness and serenity to family life.” 42. “Children have the right to grow up in a family with a father and mother capable of creating a suitable environment for the child’s development and emotional maturity. Today marriage and the family are in crisis.” Please join us for Knights of Columbus Breakfast in the Gym March 1 @ 9:30am Pastor’s Talk’s resume next week @ 9:45 in the Knights Hall Vicariate Penance Services The faithful are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Penance during Lent. Can we just as easily answer, “Here I am, Lord,” when we go home, when a neighbor needs our help, when a fellow parishioner asks us to join a committee, or when a letter asks for our financial help? These are often exactly the places where Jesus calls us to be. Confirmation Update... Our Confirmation program has had a few big changes this year. We started with our Fall Adventure Day in October, we’ve added some new and exciting pieces to our curriculum and materials and now we have our last new piece to add in. During our family information meeting in the fall, we talked about having parents and sponsors participate in the final 8 weeks of our time together. We’re almost at that time. Here’s your reminder: Our final 8 sessions of confirmation prep begin on Wednesday, February 25. We need you, patents and/or sponsors, to join us for 6 out of those 8 gatherings. Jump in, have fun, see what your students are up to… maybe even remember something you haven’t thought about in a while! We need you here with us to prepare to celebrate the sacrament in May. Care Ministry St. Henry Garden Have you thought about helping out those who can’t make it to church? Care Ministry is looking for that special person who can help bring faith and Communion to those Catholics who live at Courtyard Fountains. Courtyard Fountains is just up the street from St. Henry on Eastman Parkway. Mari Spring provides training and help to get you started. The commitment is one day a month. Please call the office and ask for Mari 503-665-9129 It’s that time of year again… There’s nothing better than picking the fruit of your own labor. In case you missed that bulletin I explained that the purpose of the Master Plan is to look at the buildings and properties, which we have at St. Henry and see if those structures and property are providing what is needed to help fulfill the 12 points of our Pastoral Plan. Winter Season: Presented by Evangelization All are invited on the second Wednesday of the Month. March 11, 2015, the topic...“Who Jesus Is” on DVD by Peter Kreeft, PhD of Philosophy at Boston College. Place: K.C. Hall at 7:00pm and again March 12, 2015 at 9:00am in the K.C. Hall Last week a small group of parishioners along with Fr. Charles, Tim, our maintenance person, and I interviewed architects who had submitted proposals for the creating of a Master Plan. We are happy to announce that we have chosen Henry Fitzgibbon, an architect with Soderstrom Architects. Henry has many years of experience working with Catholic parishes. Within the next month we will begin the process of surveying the parish at large. This will be done with parish wide meetings along with online (or paper if you don’t use computers) surveys. It is an important step we are making to take care of our parish now and for future generations. St. Henry continues to be a vibrant faith community. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions regarding this process. I may be reached by phone at 503-665-9129 or email: [email protected]. Thank you for your continued support – Joan Myers. Vicariate Scholarship Program Applications will be available at this time and must be turned in to the family’s parish by March 13, 2015. This program is open to all families with NEW students who are applying to St. Therese Catholic School for Kindergarten through 8th Grade The Vicariate Scholarship Program is part of St. Therese Catholic School’s strategic plan in an effort to promote active recruitment and increase enrollment of children in the grades Kindergarten through 8th grade. It is offered to registered families within our Vicariate parishes of St. Anne, St. Henry, St. Joseph the Worker, St. Michael’s Sandy, St. Peter and St. Rita. St. Therese School offers financial assistance to those families who wish to give their children an education at a Catholic elementary school in the local area. Marriage and Family Life The Holy Father has requested a consultation with the People of God on marriage and family life issues. We invite you to join us for the second half of our ongoing discussions to answer some questions put forth by our Archbishop Sample regarding Marriage and Family life. There are no right or wrong answers. We are just honestly responding to questions being asked by Archbishop Sample regarding marriage, family life and how well you feel supported in your marriage vocation. Please meet in the Library Sunday March 1st at 9:50 am. Bring your breakfast tray with you. If you go on line at www.archdpdx.org and pull up marriage and family you can get the entire set of questions for reflection. Did You Know... Question: How is the date of Easter calculated? Easter is a moveable feast which means that it does not occur on the same date every year. How is the date of Easter determined each year? Answer: The Council of Nicaea (A.D. 325) set the date of Easter as the Sunday following the paschal full moon, which is the full moon that falls on or after the spring equinox. We know that Easter must always fall on a Sunday because Sunday was the day of Christ’s Resurrection. But why the paschal full moon? Because that was the date of Passover in the Jewish calendar and the Last Supper (Holy Thursday) occurred on the Passover. Therefore, Easter was the Sunday after Passover. The Church does not use the exact date of the paschal full moon but an approximation, because the paschal full moon can fall on different days in different time zones, which would mean that the date of Easter would be different depending on which time zone you live in. For calculation purposes, the full moon is always set at the 14th day of the lunar month (the lunar month begins with the new moon). Likewise, the Church sets the date of the vernal equinox at March 21, even though it can occur on March 20. Both approximations allow the Church to set a universal date for Easter. Still, Easter isn’t celebrated universally on that date. While Western Christians use the Gregorian calendar (the calendar that’s used throughout the West today, in both the secular and religious worlds) to calculate the date of Easter, the Eastern Orthodox continue to use the older, astronomically inaccurate Roman calendar. Currently, March 21 on the Roman calendar falls on April 3 in the Gregorian calendar. Therefore, for the Orthodox, the Sunday following the 14th day of the paschal full moon has to fall after April 3, hence the discrepancy in the date of Easter.
