About Space Applications Centre About Ahmedabad City Space Applications Centre (SAC) is one of the major centres of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. SAC focuses on the design of space-borne instruments for ISRO missions and development and operationalisation of applications of space technology for national development. The applications cover communication, broadcasting, navigation, disaster monitoring, meteorology, oceanography, environment monitoring and natural resources survey. The Centre also conducts ninemonth Post Graduate diploma courses for students from the Asia-Pacific region under the aegis of the Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific (CSSTEAP) in satellite communication and meteorology. Ahmedabad is the largest city of Gujarat state. It is located on the banks of River Sabarmati, 30 km from the state capital, Gandhinagar. Ahmedabad is well connected with major Indian cities by road, rail and air. Space Applications Centre, ISRO is situated in the western part of the Ahmedabad city and can be reached by road from Ahmedabad airport (20 km), railway station (12 km) and an interstate terminus (10 km). The weather in Ahmedabad remains dry and hot during the month of April with temperature ranging from 25°C to 40°C. Ahmedabad is a historic city. The major tourist attractions include Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram, Adalaj Step well, Kankaria lake, Sabarmati River Front, Gujarat Science City etc. Details can be seen at Gujarat Tourism website. SAC also works with industry for sourcing and indigenization, involves Indian universities and academia in space research and propagates space technology and applications amongst students and public through in-house and mobile exhibitions. Aerosols may be of either natural or anthropogenic origin. Atmospheric aerosols have direct and indirect effects on the earth’s radiative balance. On a regional scale, the effects of atmospheric aerosols on air quality and visibility are of concern. Aerosol optical properties are considered as one of the important global geophysical variables of paramount importance by the scientific community. Multi–Angle Dual Polarisation Imaging Sensor The MADPI sensor onboard NEMO–AM is capable of measuring multi–angle and polarised radiance at top of the atmosphere at high spatial resolution (30 m @ nadir) and radiometric resolution of 12 bits presently not available with any other mission. The instrument is designed to observe reflected radiances in three spectral bands located in visible – near infrared region (480-500 nm, 660-680 nm and 860-880 nm). The unique capability of dual polarisation & multi–angle measurements through MADPI would open new areas of research in the field of aerosol monitoring. About NEMO-AM Mission NEMO–AM is a low mass, compact and three axis stabilised satellite being developed. It will carry a Multi–Angle Dual Polarisation Imaging sensor (MADPI) capable of measuring multi angle polarised radiance at the top of the atmosphere. It is planned to be launched in sun-synchronous orbit of altitude of ~500 km. The satellite is capable of tracking a target having image acquisition capability at seven different viewing angles (±53 deg) with sub degree pointing accuracy. About workshop This one-day workshop is aimed at inviting ideas and research proposals from researchers and academic institutes across the country for potential applications of NEMO-AM towards following objectives: Parameter IGFOV Value 30 m @500 km altitude Development of retrieval techniques for various aerosol properties from multi-angle and polarized radiances. Exploring the potential of multi-angle viewing geometry for study of land features. Validation of satellite derived aerosol properties using in-situ measurements. To utilize the aerosols properties in various scientific investigations (eg. air quality monitoring, radiative forcing, atmospheric correction etc).
