Here are some things to consider when investing in this form of artwork. T Design While knowing what you want for a tattoo is essential to design, originality is another big thing to consider. “You should never think of people’s judgments of your tattoos, but make sure it’s original to you and not something everybody can go out and get because it should be special,” tattoo enthusiast Cassandra Brisard said. inked. The degree of pain varies. “Every single person’s pain tolerance is different,” Brisard said. While her first tattoo hurt, the ones to follow were easier to handle. “Don’t be afraid of the pain because it’s worth it,” she added. Price Aftercare And like any investment, good artwork is going to cost a good chunk of change. For Brisard, one tattoo cost $850, not including tip. “Honestly, good artwork is not cheap,” Brisard said. “Cheap art is not good art. You’re going to live with it [your whole] life, so you might as well invest in it.” Pain Pain is inevitable when getting It’s important to follow your artist’s guidelines when it comes to tattoo aftercare. On Guam, sunscreen is another aftercare product you don’t want to forget. “The sun will make your tattoos fade, especially on Guam,” she said. Rick Cruz/Pika/ [email protected] www.guampdn.com/pika March 1, 2015 PIKA MONTHLY MAGAZINE 6 These women have transformed their skin into canvases, illustrating life, love and experience in the form of tattoos. While their indelible marks capture attention with their beauty and design, the tattoos also capture who these women are, telling their stories like nothing else can. Here, they’ll share the meaning behind their ink. J ezzilyn Eclavea took a different take on her family tattoo with sugar skulls and roses. “Everyone, usually, they get portraits or little symbols. I was always into sugar skulls,” she said. “It’s cute and it’s something I’m into [and] could represent my family.” On her arm Eclavea bears a combination of roses and sugar skulls, with each skull representing a different member of her family: one for her husband, another with a bow for her daughter and a small one at the back of her arm for her son. Flowers graze her left thigh and ankle against a background of flowing water that crashes down to her ankle. For Eclavea, the ink won’t stop there. “There’s more to be added,” she said. “I’m not finished yet.” Amanda Francel Blas Pika [email protected] Photos by Steve Hardy/For Pika 7 PIKA MONTHLY MAGAZINE, March 1, 2015 www.guampdn.com/pika Model: Jezzilyn Eclavea Location: Guam Harley-Davidson www.guampdn.com/pika March 1, 2015 PIKA MONTHLY MAGAZINE 8 P aris DeLaquil’s tattoos are a tribute to Guam, which changed her perspective on where to live. DeLaquil’s tattoos complement the contour of the female body with most of the art featured on her back and thighs. The right side of her body is covered with different colored flowers, flowing down to her left thigh with a phoenix. The left side of her back features a sunset, along with the powerful words, “Where words fail, music speaks.” The art trails down to the front of her right thigh with an ocean theme for the beauty and peace on Guam. “What makes it so beautiful is kind of the tranquility and all the serenity and nature that surrounds us,” DeLaquil said. “So I don’t want to lose that, even when I leave Guam.” By Quenie Balagot For Pika Photos by Steve Hardy/For Pika PIKA MONTHLY MAGAZINE, March 1, 2015 www.guampdn.com/pika Model: Paris DeLaquil; Location: Tanguisson Beach 9 www.guampdn.com/pika March 1, 2015 PIKA MONTHLY MAGAZINE 10 GIFT CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE APOLLO RENT A CAR CALL 646-1749 LOCATED IN TAMUNING AT THE END OF PICK-A-NAIL ROAD 10-20% O ff 3000 series G as Sh o cks as lo w as $60.00 P ag erT yp e A larm & B ack-u p Sen so rs Sh ells an d B ed T o p p ers T ran sit C o n n ect R ack In Sto ck N o w ! Her right arm features zodiac signs for each family member: a full moon for herself, lioness for her sister, a crab for her mother and an Aquarius and Gemini for her father and her son. The rose she bears also represents her mother and sister, another testament to family. Torres also wears a broken heart with stitches on her left shoulder, representing the people in her life who hold her together. Her left arm features lyrics from the band Tool that speak of living and celebrating the moment, while other tattoos celebrating music and her favorite bands grace her body. “Music is a powerful thing,” Torres said. “It heals you emotionally and mentally.” www.guampdn.com/pika March 1, 2015 PIKA MONTHLY MAGAZINE 12 Model: Clarissa Torres; Location: Guma Tasa.
