Annual ACE Convention
& Trade Show Guide
Bournemouth
Bournemouth International Centre
Chairman’s Welcome
General Information
Dear Colleagues
Networking & Awards Information
A very warm welcome to Bournemouth and to what
promises to be ACE’s biggest, brightest and most
stimulating Convention and Trade Show to date.
WARNING: Choking hazard—
small parts. Not suitable for
children under 3 years.
King and McGaw welcome
you to this years ACE. We
look forward to showing
you our new stationery and
museum products and
discussing how we might be
of service to you.
Each year we strive to bring you the very best that our
sector has to offer, both by way of speakers for the seminar
sessions and the trade stands that showcase ever more
stimulating and profitable products for us to present to our
customers. And I think that it’s testament to the growing
power of ACE that we’re able to attract ever bigger
names as speakers for the programme. I’m very much
looking forward to the high-level panel debate (‘Question
Time’) which poses the challenging question of long-term
sustainability of museums and galleries, but there will be
many highlights during the coming days.
The Convention and Trade Show present a perfect
opportunity to see new products, to brush up on
developments and issues common to us all and, of course,
to do some essential networking. Our sector is known for
its warmth and its openness, and whether you’re an ACE
veteran or a novice you’ll undoubtedly find plenty of
like-minded people willing to share their experience.
An ever-popular and eagerly anticipated highlight of the
Convention is the unveiling of the annual Best Product
Awards, which takes place after the Gala Dinner. The
Awards’ popularity and profile have increased significantly
in recent times, and I’m confident that the high standards
seen over the last few years will be improved upon yet
again this year.
I hope to be able to catch up with as many of you as
possible over the course of the next couple of days, and I’m
sure that you’ll thoroughly enjoy your stay in Bournemouth.
ACE Best Product Awards 2015
Please submit your product, together with your completed
entry form, at the registration desk. The awards will be
presented after the Gala Dinner on Tuesday evening.
Awards Dinner – Tuesday 3 March 2015
The dinner will be held in the King’s Hall at the Royal Bath
Hotel with pre-dinner drinks in the hotel lounge. The drinks
reception will be 19.00–19.45 followed by the Awards
Dinner at 20.00 and the ACE Best Product Awards 2015.
This year we will be entertained by the cleverest table
magicians in the South and the evening will end with a late
bar in the hotel lounge until 01.00.

the trading strategy and its impact on design,
to the final scheme, aspirations and new
benchmarks in museum retailing.

along the way. The journey will take us to the
planned division into English Heritage and
Historic England and what this means for the

15.00–16.00 Are You Digitally Ready for 2015?
Strategies to Increase Engagement,
Sales & Visits
The web is moving at a fast pace and it
is often difficult to keep pace with all the
innovations. This makes it very difficult for
businesses and enterprises to ensure their
digital presence is up to date, reflective of
their brand and most importantly in line with
their customers’ expectations. Jason will
highlight a number of key strategies that will
ensure you will be web ready in 2015.

Transforming the Museum
Can ‘apps’ Make Money?
Antony Robbins, Director of
Communications at the Museum of
London, describes the transformation of
the museum’s brand over the past five years
as it has developed state-of-the-art galleries
and a bolder and more contemporary retail
offer, embraced mobile technology and got
to grips with its audiences.
Antony Robbins: Director of
Communications, Museum of London
After three years away from the sector, but
maintaining connections – most recently
working with the Fondacion Louis Vuitton
– Louise has learned lots about the world
of apps and where mainstream publishers
are headed. She will bring us up to date
with what is working and what is not in
the world of heritage and in commercial
publishing.
Louise Rice: Executive Producer,

Pop-up, Profit & Pitfalls –
Catering for that Special Event
Maximising Book Sales for Cultural
Attractions and Publishers
Chris Brown of Turpin Smale Catering
Consultants and author of the Great Street
Food Blog explains the world of pop-up
catering and its relevance to ACE members. Whether creating a memorable part of a
temporary exhibition or taking advantage of
high footfall, Chris uses examples from street
food, festivals and popular pop-up catering.
Chris Brown: Turpin Smale Catering
Consultants
Over the last few years there have been many
pressures in the cultural sector that have
changed the way we sell books. The talk will
focus on maximising volume book sales in
your organisation, using fewer book titles,
yet maintaining margin and a credible offer. It
will also pose the question – if the traditional
publishing model is broken for the sector,
what can publishers do to maximise sales in
such a high-impact sales channel?
