Commodore’s Message
Greetings. The year is off to a
running start. It was great to see
such a tremendous turnout at
Cape Coral Yacht Club for our
February General Membership
Meeting. We had over one hundred people, members and
guests, who had a chance to see
how our club operates. We had
tables set up for all of our major
Commodore
Committees so it was easy to
Allen Fiske
see what will be happening for
the remainder of the year. In addition, we had
guests from the Punta Gorda Sailing Club who invited us to join
them in their Conquistador
Cup
Regatta the first
weekend
in
March. It is really
nice to be working
with our neighboring clubs both to
the North and
South.
Coming up for our racers the second weekend in
March, on the 14th, is a regatta which will consist of
buoy races which qualify for the Boat of the Year
trophy. This regatta coincides with the Ft Myers
Beach Shrimp Festival and takes place off the
beach near San Carlos Light. The following night,
Sunday, is a Shrimp Boil at the Cape Coral Yacht
Club.
For our cruisers, later in the month, the weekend
after our Membership Meeting, is a cruise to Pelican
Bay in Cayo Costa. This is a Friday 3/20-Sunday
3/22 cruise to our most popular destination. There
will be a happy hour on the beach, a potluck dinner
and a chance to explore the nature trails in Cayo
Costa State Park.
As you can see, there is no shortage of on-thewater and land activity to take part in. See you
there.

The Spring here
is some of the
nicest weather of the whole year, usually accompanied by a great breeze. So come on out and join in
on the festivities planned by our dedicated volunteer
Directors and Committee Heads.

Rear Commodore of Racing’s Report
Thanks to everyone who
made the 2015 Edison Gulf
Regatta a success. Our first
successful regatta of the
year was held Feb 7th. The
weather was quite cooperative, starting cool and warming nicely, with winds starting around 12-15 and gradually lightening during the
Rear Commodore– Racing day. Commodore Fiske volJohn Churchill
unteered Minimum Balance
as committee boat, with
Susan Watkins, Mike Conley helping out Craig
Spicer as PRO. Without a mark boat, Art Monahan
on Kraken was a great help setting out the turning
mark. Art went on to win his class, being unfortunately the only multihull. In spinnaker, Eric Milbrandt on Full Tilt won the regatta by taking three
firsts, followed by Steve Roake on Meritorious. NURDLE, checking to be sure there were no
stragglers, placed last in every race. Steve Romaine's Air Supply won the top honors in nonspinnaker with consistent seconds in every race,
followed by Roger Horton on Wicked Wicked Ways
and third was Forrest Bank's Midnite Rider who
missed the first race, likely due to the very low
morning tide. Miss Cathleen and Essence rounded
out the class. True Cruising had a great turnout
with seven boats competing. First place went to
Arnie Pfalz's speedy Laura Li, with Tom Horner's
Bentley in second and third going to Keith Jacoby
aboard Seiren. Windy City, Krisha, Wind Star and
Silver Sea completed the class and provided good
competition. Thanks to everyone who came out to
race, with special thanks to our volunteers who
make the whole thing happen, including Tony Solgard who did a great job figuring the scores. Our
next race day is March 14th, the Shrimp Festival
Regatta, our final Buoy Regatta of the winter. We
are always in need of volunteers for race committee
and mark boat if anyone is interested in helping the
program.

EPOL Cruise Recap
In spite of the cold windy weather 15 boats were at
Legacy Harbor Marina. They were: Aeola Too,
Air Boss, Air Supply, Blank Check, Desperado,
Freestyle, Gopher Baroque, Jazzy, Lazy Susan,
Beauvois, Sail La Vie, Silver Sea, Tiki, Trust Me,
Wicked Wicked Ways and Wind Star.
Friday evening the
Harbor Master and
crew set up tables
for our Cocktail Hour
at E dock. Thank
you Eric, Audrey
and Sabrina!
Saturday,
tables,
chairs and Jenn's
oysters started arriving around 10:00am thanks to
Judy and Kim for accepting everything! Many
hands were involved with set-up and then the Oyster Fest started at 11:30am. 8 men were schucking
raw oysters, Russell Green and Rose Young
manned the grill for steamed oysters. Rose put
Gouda cheese on some of the oysters and people
liked it.
She might have started something
new!
This year we had portable propane grills supplied by Diane & Mike
Pfaff and Connie and
Sonny Ridout for frying
oysters. Special thanks
to Sally Brandon, Pixie,
Elise, and Sigrid for
excessive breading of
oysters for frying Madeleine Tilley's recipe. Edison
Sailing Center also loaned us a grill.
Bev & Bob Duff
set up portable
tents
which
shaded
the
shuckers
and
other workers!

Rear Commodore of Cruising’s Report
RC-Cruising’s Report—Continued
EPOL- Rose Ann Hoffman
and Paul Steinman pulled it
off again- flawlessly!
Not
that there weren’t challenges. The delivery guy
‘couldn’t deliver’ because
trees blocked the way.
Solved. Troubles getting the
various fires going as we
were short on boy scouts.
Rear Commodore-Cruising
Solved. Oysters to be eaten.
Kim Brown
Solved. Cold Weather.
Solved- we were shedding layers all weekend.
Thanks to the many that helped. Special thanks to
Eric and the crew at Legacy- not only did they find
enough slips to tuck everyone into but went out of
their way to be helpful. Hot buttered rum watching
traffic clog the bridges after the parade- thanks Air
Boss. And we even sailed home.
Wow, barely time to clean the cracker crumbs on
the cabin sole between trips. No point in having a
boat if you aren’t going to use it. As Rear Commodore of Cruising, I promise we’ll go to at least one
marina/anchorage you hate during the course of the
year. SO skip that cruise and have fun on the other
80-90%.
March has us heading to Pelican Bay the 20th
through the 22nd. No fancy sign up sheet- just show
up for a good time. We’ll get there Friday afternoon.
Doug –our end of life PVC dinghy- claims to have
one more trip through the tunnel of love in him before the Defender Spring sale. We’ll see what the
tides are doing and how he is feeling Saturday.
Anyone ever tried giving a dinghy one of those blue
pills when they get older? Maybe a morning hike on
the island to pay our respects to Captain Nelson in
the Cemetery. Dog Beach to toast the sunset. Life is
good.
Steve Roake
Steve Roake is leading the April 9-12 Cape Haze
Cruise. Info is elsewhere. Please chase this down
with Steve as soon as possible so he can get the
Marina arrangements in place.
Membership and Recruitment
Next up is Panther Key at the end of April. This is a
nice longer cruise to the wilds of the Everglades
before the bugs win. I have a couple of boats looking to go but I have no leader. Really need someone
to raise their hand. Contact me.
Early May is SanTweenie and Prom. Diane and
Ray say if you can’t find your old prom date you can
bring your current flame. Full details elsewhere. Get
with them as soon as possible as slips are limited
and good times guaranteed. Remember this also
ties into a race home on Sunday for those so inclined.
DANGER ISLAND – I know it is end of May, but I
need some volunteers NOW to get things organized. We slice it up into small jobs and if you act
NOW you get your pick. See the sign up sheet elsewhere to get you thinking. Contact me.
Fair winds,

Vice Commodore—Summerset’s Report
Wow! Only seven short months
away. The planning meetings and
organization for “Our Big One” are
well underway, for October 9th,
10th and 11th.
Two name sponsorships are available, for the cocktail party and the
distance race. Offshore Sailing
School is already in and committed to once again sponsor the
Vice Commodore- “Offshore Sailing School Buoy
Summerset
Races”.
Let me know if you
Steve Romaine
have a sponsor in mind.
The special 50th Anniversary
Logo collared shirts and caps are
“selling like hotcakes.” These limited edition products will be on sale
until September 10th. They will
take about four weeks to deliver
and come with your name and
boat name thereupon. What a great way to advertise our Regatta – Please wear them! An order form
is included in this Chowder Chatter. Caps are now
available in white as well as navy, and samples will
be available at the next meeting, March 17th.
The West Marine Community Day, previously
scheduled for April 8th had been cancelled but is
now back on. Save your purchases, and get Port
Supply pricing that day only for CMCS members
courtesy of the Edison Sailing Center. Thanks to
West Marine for making this possible. Five percent
of the sales in the West Marine Superstore on April
8th only will be given to youth sailing at the Edison
Sailing Center. We need to grow our support for
youth sailing, as I know we will, by our sponsorship
program and cost control measures associated with
Summerset.
Thirty five CMCS Youth Sailing Grants are available. Contact Marla Parker, (910-0554) our Grant
Fund Administrator, should you know of a young
person ages 8 – 15 who would like to learn to sail.
The summer session dates are now posted on the
Edison Sailing Center website, EdisonSailingCenter.org.
Please contact me should you have, or know of
someone who might have Dacron sails or silent auction items to donate. Also, we are collecting old
Summerset photos and T-shirts, which will be returned after the Regatta.
We are a great big team, all of us putting Summerset together. Thank you so much for your support.
Steve Romaine
Page 4
Youth Sailing (Big Bang for your Buck)
Through the extraordinary outreach and community
connections made by Mr. Summerset, Steve Romaine, youth sailing throughout SW Florida and beyond has been the beneficiary of this philanthropy.
Growing the next generation of sailors and competitors is not only exciting, it is crucial to the continuation of the sport for which we all share a common
passion.
Racing is not without costs: not only the time away
from home/business, but also the costs associated
with competitive sailing – registrations (typically
$100 for non-national or qualifying events and up to
$600 for national/international events), hotels, food,
fuel, safety boats/coaches, and the potential for
equipment breakage. There’s not a sailor among us
who hasn’t experienced something that breaks the
minute you prepare to tack!! Additional dollars were
awarded to ESC recently to support its racing team
and to help grow more competitors who cannot afford to participate.
It is important for CMCS to know the value received
for their efforts, so here is a partial list of what your
support has yielded:

A Laser Gulf Coast Champion
 Stipend for the National Laser Champion to
participate in the World’s Laser Championships
in Japan
 Invitation to compete in the Miami OCR where
two ESC sailors placed among the top ten in the
Americans and among the top 50-60 internationally in their fleets
 Ten Laser sailors and six Opti sailors who will
compete in the February, Upper Keys, Mark
Sorenson Youth Regatta
These are the future CMCS members – those who
will carry the Mission and traditions into the next
generation and beyond.
Thank you ALL for your support of youth sailing.

CMCS Shrimp Festival
ALL YOU CAN EAT SHRIMP BOIL & CHICKEN GRILL
Sunday, March 15th, 1800 (6:00 PM)!!!
This is another CMCS tradition, from the days when we put newspaper on the
picnic tables and dumped the freshly boiled shrimp, then licked our fingers! Are
we more refined now??? Not much, but still looking for a good time with good
food and good friends!
This could be the best deal in town, $15 per person, same as last year and the
year before that, WOW!!! But…RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED! You just
cannot expect to show up and have us know how much food to have on hand…
so, fill out the form and reserve your place for a giant portion of shrimp. And if
you don‘t like/cannot eat these delicate little Gulf crustaceans, then we can do a
juicy and tender chicken breast, YOUR CHOICE, just sign up early so we can
get the nets out and catch those shrimp! Dinner includes all-you-can-eat shrimp
or chicken, hush puppies, coleslaw, corn & dessert.

Sea Scout Mentoring
As many of you know, one of Edison Sailing Center's outreach programs involves Sea Scout troops that are active
in Lee County. Ship 840 has been working with us for
about five years now; the new troop from the Beach,
Troop 362, is just learning the basics of sailing and has
inquired if there might be some opportunities for them to
sail on larger boats with other adult sailors who are passionate about "playing about in boats".
Most of the troop has been non-sailors until recently. They
are learning how to sail in 420s - this boat is a two-person
vessel that can have a spinnaker. For now, we are choosing to teach them without the spin/trapeze - both a safety
and a learning curve issue. The point is that they are willing to sail with any of you who would like to mentor some
of our future sailors/leaders and in exchange for the learning opportunity; they would help clean the boat, etc. I am
reaching out to this group first, in hopes that you might be
willing to work with them and if not, perhaps you know of
another sailor who would welcome a kiddo or two (usually
teenagers) aboard to teach them a skill or two.
Please remember that the Sea Scouts - in name, like our
CMCS Ladies Bridge Club - may not "play bridge". This is
an eager group of young people, however, who are seeking new experiences.
The "older" Sea Scout troop is planning another adventure to the Tortugas again this summer. They have had a
sailing vessel donated to them.
Thanks for your consideration.....

Ladies Bridge Club
Conquistador Cup
The Conquistador Cup is
March 7th and 8th in Charlotte Harbor. Butch Dorey
from the PGSC visited the
CMCS February meeting
to promote the event. The
more boats we send up to
this great event the better
chance we have of winning
the Fort Gorda Cup
back, and the better
chance of us getting even
more of their boats to compete in Summerset this fall.
Steve Romaine
Ladies Bridge Club and male
guests met at the Calusa Nature
Center and Planetarium for our
February get-together.
We
toured the nature center, enjoying the many live specimens on
Ladies Bridge Club exhibit and displays of how our
Rose Young &
Rose Ann Hoffman area's former residents used SW
Florida's natural environment.
We thoroughly enjoyed the planetarium
show of very early Hawaiians and descendants today navigating in open canoes, using only the heavens, currents, weather patterns and seasons. We
also discovered the local astronomical society; a
few of us went stargazing the following week.
Next LBC meeting will be March 3, 11am - a daysail on Sea Isle with Paul and Rose Ann. Directions
to boat: RSVP to Rose Ann 239 540-1911; [email protected].

The Pelican Bay Cruise will be March 20-22. This is one of our favorite anchorages in
Southwest Florida and a beautiful venue for spending the weekend out on the hook.
Judy and I plan to head out on Friday and will leave the anchorage for home Sunday
morning. Some may choose to arrive earlier and stay later. We will likely get to Marker
101 on the Intracoastal Waterway around 1 P on Friday, March 20. Anyone who would
like to is welcome to travel along with us for the trip to Cayo Costa and Pelican Bay.
If this is your first visit to Pelican Bay be sure to follow the chart. Note the sand is
shifting a bit. Pay attention and give the sign at the entrance a bit more room than you
might have ‘traditionally’. “Don’t go any faster than you want to run aground” Capt. Mel
Rudd
Friday—Let’s socialize Friday evening around
4:30-5 p.m. on Dog Beach.
Saturday—We’ll spend the day hanging out on
“The Spit” which is now split.. Practice saying the
split spit three times. Or exploring Cayo Costa’s
beaches and trails looking for the elusive wild
hogs and the gator in the lake. If tides permit
there may be a trek to the Tunnel of Love / aka
Cheedix Cut. Happy hour and pot luck at The
Beach at 5.
Sunday— We’re going to head for home but you
are allowed to linger and let les bon temps roulez
as you wish.
I am sure everyone is good about the entrance
fee when going on the island. I make a point of
writing CMCS on the envelope so it is clear that
not all boaters take advantage. Never hurts to
create a little good will.

“After You”
Next year’s event will be the second Forum, at the
Hilton Resort in San Diego. This event will bring
industry, yacht clubs, community sailing organizations, and other programs together for sessions
relevant to their needs and trends. NSPS is often
referred to as “professional development” for sailing
organizations and sailors, whereas The Forum approaches more global topics and emphasizes
broader issues.
1988 MacGregor 26D water ballast
& daggerboard less than 2’ draft/ board up
with an incredibly reliable 8HP Nissan outboard on a trailer. Very clean inside, enclosed head and sleeps 5 people, even has a
pop up area for more room. Three sails in
good condition and sails so well it has won
many races. Recent bottom paint and barrier
coat if you want to keep it in the water but
tows easily with a regular car because of the
water ballast.

US Sailing hosted its bi-annual NSPS in New Orleans, in January. True to every word, “Laissez les
bons temps rouler!” Good times were indeed had by
all, despite the rain and chill in the air. Afterall, it IS
“Nah-lens”! Sessions on volunteer management at
large events, marketing, working with industry for
donations/fundraising, safety and risk management
(new legislation on the horizon for organizations
using tractors, hoists, fork lifts, etc), along with comprehensive keynotes by the organizers of the Volvo
Ocean Race, Wanderlust, and the ongoing research/testing on national standards for powerboating made for lively table conversation and networking.
For those who cannot travel the distances each
year, please remember that US Sailing hosts two,
one-day, Regional Symposiums in Florida. Our next
event is slated for Saturday, April 25th, in Coconut
Grove. Stephanie Webb continues to serve as US
Sailing’s facilitator for these regional convocations,
along with staff from US Sailing. Topics of interest
may be sent to Caitlin Niemic at US Sailing, or to
Stephanie, for upcoming events.
We cannot end this article without a word regarding
the hospitality of Southern Yacht Club, or of the exciting news about the NOLA Community Sailing and
Lake Ponchatrain Foundation who just announced
the major gift of $3.5 million to build a three-story
community sailing building on SYC’s property. Complete
details

CMCS maintains an organizational membership
with US Sailing Association and while that is an excellent professional membership, each of us should
consider individual or family memberships in USSA.
It is the national governing organization for our
sport/lifestyle. Along with membership discounts to
West Marine, Sperry, Gill and Hobie Eyewear- to
name a few - there is the professional piece that
supports community sailing, competitive sailing, organizations that provide ongoing public access to
the water for all. President Tom Hubbell would love
to see photos, Tweets and posts of sailors proudly
holding their US Sailing membership cards. Participating in the new MVP program affords organizations “credits” toward merchandise, speakers, and
training. Great value! Check out the website for
more info on MVP.
