This is one platform which will do well next year as well, believes Chopra. 5 top RECRUITMENT GAME CHANGERS Online job sites have revolutionised the recruitment landscape for both employers and job seekers and have increased the efficiency with which hiring decisions take place. The best part of search options in job portals is that it always shows the recently updated resumes at the top thus, providing fresh talent at the very beginning. Referral Programs These programs differ from one company to another. In fact, some companies may not even have such a policy. But the concept of having such a program is slowly gaining momentum in order to increase engagement of employees in the organisation. Data Analytics Mobile Hiring Companies are now optimising job postings and career websites on mobiles. Today, almost everyone has a smartphone and recruiters are making the most of it. This medium is best for generic job profiles. There’s a likelihood of talent acquisition leaders relying heavily on data analytics in the coming year, to make informed business decisions for both short-term and long-term, said Sarker. PRIORTIES FOR HR Hiring Methodology: Employee Engagement Rewards & Recognition The year 2015 will witness an evolution in hiring trends to be more employee friendly and having flexible employment policies. For instance, one of the most crucial trends that will witness prominence in the technology sector, in the coming year would be budget increase in companies, inculcating a positive attitude in institutions on recruiting. The emergence of the Indian Software industry has injected a new confidence and paradigm in Indian business and hence, a lot of job opportunities will open up in the coming years. The current government aspires to strengthen the Manufacturing sector of India. “Policy makers have realised that India’s growing economy offers many opportunities to domestic and international players to invest and hence, India needs to take measures to develop this sector, which has great potential and can add to the GDP,” feels Preeti Marwah, vice president & head of HR, Power2SME. With the ‘Make In India’ campaign the GDP contribution from this sector is expected to boost up. This will have a cascading effect on all sectors through creation of jobs and opportunities. E-commerce Startups Software The Software industry has overtaken PSUs as the biggest job creator in the country. This industry is expected to grow between 12-14 per cent during the next five years, said 5 top Tech Professionals Technology products and services will continue to have a huge demand, making technology jobs hot and rewarding. Within tech, specialisations in SMAC, user experience design and usability engineering would be most rewarding. The Technology industry remains one of the fastest growing sectors and biggest employment generators. Analysts E-commerce players are building their analytics capabilities and in a bid to get the right analytical talent they are offering lucrative salaries to analysts across levels, SECTORS This is the space to watch out for, given the speed of evolution and scale of change. “Compared to a scenario 5 years back, wherein the hiring process was slow as the future of e-commerce was not clear, today, hiring has picked up in a big way. Companies are hiring from the most elite talent pool available in the market, to stay in tandem with the competition,” said Ashu Malhotra, head-HR Jabong. Considering that the $ 11 billion e-commerce business is predicted to hit $20 billion in 2015, the fast pace at which this business is set to grow is only imaginable. BFSI As the public sector and cooperative banks plan to go mobile, this will witness phenomenal growth in 2015. The Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana has provided further impetus to the sector. “From support and maintenance to enhancement of services, BFSI will lead the recruitment market in 2015,” said Pratyush Nandkeolyar, global head-Talent Acquisition Group, Fulcrum Worldwide. Telecom The Telecom sector has experienced rapid growth owing to regulatory liberalisation, making telecom one of the major catalysts in India’s growth story. “Owing to increased penetration in rural areas along with growth in the smartphone numbers and internet usage, increase in job opportunities is expected in times ahead,” said Marwah. BEST PAYING JOBS said Amit Vadera, senior general manager, TeamLease Services. Researchers “Jobs in research and development (R&D) will grow across key sectors with increased focus on innovation,” feels Ashish Chattaraj, country HR manager, Freescale Semiconductor India Pvt Ltd. Today, every company is spending heavily on R&D and it will certainly attract a lot of job seekers. Project Managers Project management jobs in the IT sector will be rewarding, said Gaurav Saini, associate director & head L&D-People Practice Team, Happiest Minds. The role of program manager is evolving so as to be challenging as he/she is expected to align and realign the team’s initiatives with changing complex business environments. Management Consultants The job of a management consultant involves providing clients with insights on unchartered business territories and help resolve growth issues. Industry-Academia mulls in TimesJobs.com Conversations held in New Delhi W ith the PM Modi’s ‘Make in India’ campaign, industry experts expect nearly 60 lakh jobs to get converted in the next couple of years. This sounds great or on second thoughts maybe not so great! Does India have enough talent/skilled talent to gear up for the next phase of economic development and globalisation? The answer is 50:50. This is the best case scenario. A diversified talent pool is available, but they are not employable (read not ready for the industry). Talent is leaving core industries to join IT talking on this issue, Deepak Bharara, CHRO, Lanco Group mentioned that today, a civil engineer doesn’t want work in an infrastructure site even with a good salary. They want a comfortable and plush job in the city. “Designation is another major distress factor for employees as IT companies give fancy designations such as team lead/supervisor, however on the site, s/he is working as an engineer only.” which is brilliant, is under-utilised. If used to its full strength, we might be able to reduce the huge investment in skills trainings. There is also a dire need to re-assess the selection criteria of colleges for students. “While choosing an institute, we pay a great deal of attention to the selection criteria of institutes, as it directly impacts the quality of students. In fact, we run a pre-placement drive to judge their interest level in the company and the job,” said Amitabh Akhauri, SVP, Jindal Stainless Steel. Stating example from the automobile design industry, Gaurav Kumar, associate director, KPMG mentioned that globally, many automobile design companies reach out to kids in schools for design ideas. This also gives school kids a window to realise their potential and identify a career path in early stages. He stressed that Indian institutions should also imbibe such practices instead of just focusing on theoretical teaching. Underlining the challenges faced by the academia, Senthil Kumar – director admissions & outreach (North India) of SRM University maintained that first and foremost, we have to understand that universities are not meant for placement but to provide quality education and uplift skills of their students. Higher education institutes alone cannot be held responsible for skilling and making students employable. There is a long chain which From time immemorial, the two major stakeholders: industry and academia have been at war. The former believes the current academic curriculum and teaching methods are outdated while, the latter has a grouse about the lack of industry interest in making students job-ready. Both are working in different worlds, with different mindsets to achieve different goals. Acting its part, TimesJobs in association with SRM University hosted an ‘Industry-Academia Conclave’ to make both aware about each others’ challenges and expectations. The panel had representatives from non-IT industries such as consumer healthcare, consulting, infrastructure, power and manufacturing. During the introductory round, industry experts acknowledged there is a disconnect between industry and academia expectations. In the war for skilled talent, non-IT companies are losing talent to the IT companies, even though the former are paying better than the latter. Clearly this is a wake-up call for manufacturing and non-IT industries as they are not getting the required talent easily, said Rajiv Sahdev, SVP, Moserbaer India Ltd. To enable students to choose the right career path when they come to college, career counselling for students should start from the school level. This will help in improving quality of future workforce. Do we really need engineers or do we need skilled workforce? Raising this issue, Dr TK Mandal, VP-HR, JK Paper Ltd highlighted that every year 6 lakh engineers graduate from various engineering colleges. Only half get meaningful jobs and others are reduced to doing jobs which are meant for IT diploma holders. “This creates a large group of underutilised and unsatisfied employees.” Expectations need to be set right from the college level itself. According to Arun Sehgal, EVP-HR of GSK Consumer Healthcare, there is some fixation for professional education in India. “We want engineers and MBAs for jobs where we don’t require those skills. In my company, I have engineers in the HR function and MBAs in Sales.” He also strongly pointed that the undergraduate talent in India, 4 leads back to schools. When students come to college we have to undo certain things not required in the practical world. “We have moved from rote based learning to application based learning.” Together, the panel agreed that the industry and the academia have to collaborate in rightful ways. The faculty should come to the industry to understand the new requirements and train students accordingly. On the other hand, corporate leaders should also be inducted into the academic boards. The Industry-Academia should jointly assess students during college admissions to guide them towards the right courses/streams basis their interest, skills and aptitude.
