Analyst Guidance
Network architects should revise WAN architectures to improve performance for
external cloud applications and resources. In most cases, hybrid WAN
architectures will provide the best blend of performance and availability.

Why do we need Path Selection?
Because Path Selection is both Visibility and Control

Path Selection Benefits
•
•
•
Protection against network outages
– Detect outage and shift applications
– Ensure availability of priority applications
Cost savings
– Efficient use of non-utilized WAN
– Switching to a low cost bandwidth for low priority traffic
– Increase available WAN bandwidth
Application performance optimization
– Directly access Internet & Cloud resources
– Align service level with application need

Path Selection: Two simple concepts
•
Path definition
– Ability to identify and logically configure a WAN path. It also includes
additional parameters to ensure the viability of the path (availability)
•
Application steering
– An operation that combines the QoS packet-flow classification with
path control. Path selection can steer different classes of traffic
through the different primary, secondary, tertiary, or site default paths
that you have configured in path availability

Strategies to Build the Solution
Visibility
• Understand your
application traffic
• Develop your
capacity and traffic
engineering plan
• Measure
effectiveness postdeployment
19

Control
• Align applications
with optimum links
via Path Selection
• Ensure application
performance with
QoS
Acceleration
• Maximize
throughput on high
SLA links
• Increase end-user
performance with
application
optimizations
Proof: Expected Business Impact
•
•
•
Cost Efficiency
– Use all the bandwidth you’re paying for: “No
more standby backup links”
– Reduce monthly reoccurring WAN costs by
50% or more using public Internet with
existing MPLS
Increased Resiliency
– “You’ll start looking at it for cost reasons, but
the real value is a resiliency play”
•
Improve Application Performance
– “With path selection, we can afford to give
critical applications the performance they
need”
•
