LOCAL HELP WANTED – DURHAM REGION
Express Entry: Helping Canada address economic and
labour market needs
(NC) In January 2015, Citizenship and
Immigration Canada launched Express
Entry – a new electronic application
management system that helps select
highly-skilled foreign workers who have
the attributes and talent that Canada
needs. Express Entry applies to the
following key economic immigration
programs: Federal Skilled Worker
Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled
Trades Program (FSTP), Canadian
Experience Class (CEC) and a portion
of the Provincial Nominee Program.
Skilled foreign workers who apply for
permanent residence through Express
Entry will have their applications
processed in six months or less.
Business owners in Ontario and
across Canada who are unable to find
a Canadian or permanent resident to
fill available positions can use Express
Entry to hire a skilled foreign worker
quicker than ever before.
Benefits of Express Entry
• Employers in Canada now have a
direct role in recruiting economic
immigrants with Express Entry.
• Employment and Social Development
Canada’s recently modernized Job
Bank helps Express Entry candidates
connect with Canadian employers.
• Express Entry candidates can also
promote themselves to recruiters and
consult private sector job boards to find
job opportunities.
How Express Entry works
The process is quite simple:
1. A potential candidate completes an
online Express Entry profile. If they
meet the criteria of the FSWP, FSTP
or CEC, they will be placed in a pool.

Accessibility in your place of business is an Ontario law
(NC) Did you know that if you own
a business in Ontario with at least
one employee, you need to meet
certain requirements under Ontario’s
accessibility standards?
Creating an accessibility policy for
employees and customers, and training
your employees to serve customers with
disabilities, are examples of customer
service standards you are required to
meet. Although requirements depend
on the size of your business, providing
information for handling workplace
emergencies to employees with
disabilities will apply regardless of the
business size.
If your private or not-for profit
business employs 20 or more people, you
will also need to file a 2014 Compliance
Report with the Ontario government,
which can be found through www.
mcss.gov.on.ca. Compliance deadlines
are being phased in over several years.
To stay informed of the changes you
can visit www.Ontario.ca/AccessON.
You can also access an easy stepby-step guide to filing your report,
and other free online guides, tools
and templates to learn about the
requirements.
Be sure to take advantage of free
information and resources to help you
with accessibility and other business
topics by contacting Canada Business
Ontario (CBO) at 1-888-576-4444 /

LOCAL HELP WANTED – DURHAM REGION
9 Important Things To Look For In A New Job
When I found myself unhappy after
a few months at my first and began
actively looking for a new role, I had a
much clearer understanding of what I
wanted and went about my job search
process in totally different way than
I had a few years earlier. This time
around, I was looking to jump-start my
career. I wasn’t just looking for a job
and looking for the following things
led me happily to my current role.
Whether you’re just starting your
career or hoping to move up, here are
nine important things to look for in a
new job that will lead to growth and
happiness.
1. A company that is disrupting an
industry
It’s exciting to work for a company
that is impacting human progress and
has a unique business model that is
different from any of its competitors.
Why do so many people want to join
technology companies or startups
nowadays? It’s because it’s exciting to
be a part of something that could be
huge, and working to make something
grow to new heights is empowering.
2. People you want to work with
Work for a company that employs
people you respect and who respect you,
and one where you’ll be surrounded by
people who challenge you to think.
Because you spend more of your
waking hours at work, look for a place
where you can see the people becoming
friends beyond just colleagues. That’ll
make it fun to come to work every day.
3. The company puts its people, not
its bottom line, first
Happy employees lead to greater
productivity and retention, which
inadvertently leads to greater profit! A
paycheck can only go so far; look for
a company where the leaders genuinely
care about their employees’ well-being.
4. It fits your personality
An employee sinking or swimming
is often directly connected to whether
the company is the right place for
them. What is the office environment?
Is it collaborative, or more of an
individualist mentality? Figure out
what type of company culture you want
to be a part of.
5. You’re excited about the work
Though everyone has off days, strive
to work somewhere that you’re excited
to get to when you wake up in the
morning. Look for a place where you’ll
be stimulated and challenged not hand
held and where you’ll be encouraged
to drive your own projects and ideas.
Believe in what the company is doing
at its core. You can’t sell, market, or
work well with your clients if you aren’t
passionate about what the company is
doing.
6. The company will help you grow
professionally
Look for a company that invests in
the growth of its people and gives them
the skills to grow into management
roles, start their own companies, or
whatever your long term goal is. Be sure
to ask what professional opportunities
are available. Join a place where you
feel confident that when you go on to
do something else one day, you’ll be
equipped with the skills to be successful
in whatever you choose.
7. Both vertical and horizontal
mobilityis promoted
Aim to work somewhere that
promotes based on merit, and that
encourages you to explore opportunities
within the company. It’s not just
about growing upwards; it’s also about
growing into different roles where you
can flex your skills sets.
8. The environment is uplifting
Look for a place the recognizes its
employees, in whatever method they
can. Whether that’s through awards,
merit bonuses, or extra special prizes
for success, you’ll appreciate a company
that rewards you for your hard work
and successes.
9. They promote work/life balance
Work should not only be challenging,
but it should be fun. You want to work
somewhere that respects your work life
balance. At the end of the day, family
and friends always come first. Life is
too short to spend all your time behind
a desk. Make sure your company lets
you enjoy the ride too.

‘Cognitive’ computers step
out of sci-fi and into real life
(NC) We look to experts for help with
our health, personal finances, the
law, and literally every area of human
endeavor because they know more than
us. But even the most skilled experts
only know a tiny fraction of all the
information available in their field to
help shape their decisions – and there
are so many options. For example, what
cancer treatment will work best for
you? What diet? What legal precedents
are most relevant to your case? What
treatment does your dog or cat need?
But now, assisting those experts is
IBM Watson, a cognitive computing
system that can ingest and reason
about vast quantities of information
as well as learn and interact naturally
with people. Watson processes
information more like a human than a
computer -- by understanding natural
language, generating hypotheses based
on evidence, and learning as it goes. It
processes huge amounts of data in
many different forms, and learns from
each interaction. Watson can sift
through these massive amounts of
data at unprecedented speeds – already
24-times faster than when it won the
“Jeopardy!” championship against a
panel of previous champions. It can
help experts in literally any field find
patterns and make connections quickly
and easily.
Cognitive computing systems have
the potential to address some of
humanity’s most urgent and complex
questions – everything from the
diagnosis and treatment of disease, the
creation of new drugs, the management
of impossibly complex financial,
telecommunications
and
energy
systems, and more.
With connectivity expected to
be part of everyday items (known
as the Internet of Things) and with
intelligence imbedded in everything
from roads, power lines, homes, cars,
stores, farms, and factories, there is
enough data available to address some
of the world’s most pressing challenges,
provided there is a way to process and
understand that data. This is what
Watson does, points out IBM, whether
it’s using individual genetic data
to personalize a treatment, helping
veterans with post-traumatic stress
disorder, creating healthier meals, or
providing solutions to scores of other
applications.
