Still At It
The ContainART Mobile Gallery began another great year
of bringing cutting-edge contemporary art to the
hinterlands, following a display of curator Julie Collins’
personal art collection with a show of work by Joanne
Linsdell in nearby Dean, adjacent to the iconic Dean Hall.
And Congratulations are in order for Public Art
Coordinator Julie Collins & partner Derek John, whose
Evidence Based Research (seen recently in these pages)
won the Family Choice Award at the recent
Monalto Sculpture exhibition.
Congratulations, too, to Niki Lakerink and all
of the volunteer artists & hands who brought
a taste of Paris & New York to Ballarat with
Collidescope - Art Meets Fashion, a
collaboration between visual artists & fashion
designers. Showcasing the incredible talent
at work across out region, Collidescope was
presented in association with the Virgin
Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival - and
all of Ballarat will be able to experience the
beauties of Collidescope when highlights of
the project are featured as part of the
Ballarat Begonia Festival.
Open Monument

Ground has broken at Len
T Frazer Reserve for Public
Art’s largest commission
to date - a contemporary
installation honouring the
contributions of the Chinese
community to the growth &
development of Ballarat.
A partnership between Ballarat City Council and Sovereign Hill - and considerable support from Chinese
communities both here & in Melbourne - has made this project possible.

images that are more than the simple representation of a person or a place.
Drawing on her own life experiences, Nathalie
Saldumbide’s portraits seem to take a philosophical and highly subjective position. Some employ
a metaphoric darkness denoting gravity; others
employ a joie de vivre demonstrating a growing
confidence of existing through art.
Ian Kemp uses photography to explore his new
home in Ballarat as well as places visited in his
travels, creating landscapes that evoke mystery
as well as an emotional response to settings only
previously dreamed about. His landscapes and
his portraits are both more than a simple representation of features, revealing character that
is both specific to the subject and of a universal
appeal.
Faces & Places formally opens
Friday, 27 February from 6 - 8pm
in association with the
Ballarat Backyard Tasters.
All welcome!
Backspace Gallery is always proud to present
work by some of our region’s most skilled & best
known artists – and even more excited to serve
as handmaiden to the debut of new artists onto
the local scene.
Faces & Places (26 February - 15 March) is one
such opportunity, introducing the work of
emerging photographers Nathalie Saldumbide
and Ian Kemp.
In a literal sense, Faces & Places can be seen as
a series of portraits and landscapes. But it is more
than that – the work reflects places in time;
places in the artists’ life experiences that are
highly significant for them and which mark
moments of self-discovery and self-knowledge.
Through their work, Nathalie and Ian examine the
emotional space evoked by their subjects. They
explore mood and give emphasis resulting in

Working a range of mediums &
techniques, artist Frances Guerin
explores the enduring presence of the
Celts in Central Victoria in her new
exhibition The Oran Mor, in Backspace
Gallery from 19 - 29 March.
The myth of Oran Mor is that of the
great melody that gave birth to all
creation. Through works that are by
turn figurative and abstract, whimsical
and dark, Guerin reflects the sense of
ancient mystery at the heart of Celtic
culture.
Guerin sourced many traditional myths
in developing ideas for this collection
of work. The Oran Mor offers some new
manifestations of the artist’s signature
kangaroo people alongside vaguely
mystical sculptures fashioned from tree
branches. Drawings reference the lure
of gold that drew people from all over
the world to this region - as well as the
seam of gold that lives within the
ancestral stories of the Celts.
Mounted in conjunction with the City
of Ballarat’s 2015 Harmony Fest, The
Oran Mor is an examination of the
universal experiences of people
leaving their ancestral homes for life in
a new and strange land.
Guerin’s intent is to invite the viewer to
listen to the silence of the space.
Nostalgia permeates the works, speaking of a love for the original home and
a feeling of sadness for its loss.
The Oran Mor illustrates how culture
is celebrated even as some of the
details become less substantial with
the passage of time. But even as the
particulars fade, the sense of identify whether based on direct experience or
imagination - endures.

Ballarat Pahiyas
Backspace Gallery
19 - 29 March
Backspace Gallery continues its collaboration
with the City of Ballarat Harmony Fest this March,
featuring a very special installation created by the
artist Diokno Pasilan in partnership with kids from
the Ballarat YMCA Summer Holiday Program &
members of our active Filipino community.
Using massed colour & pattern (and scores of
recycled plastic milk cartons donated from across
Ballarat), Diokno transforms the outside perimeter
of Backspace Gallery into walls of riotously festive
decoration known as Pahiyas in his native
Philipines.
An internationally-recognised artist & performer,
Diokno Pasilan is also renowned for his work
creating collaborative community art projects.
He & partner Ruth Graham presented Harmony
Fest workshops through January with the YMCA
kids, as well as a series of facilitated community
workshops.
And visitors to Harmony Fest can contribute to
the growing Ballarat Pahinya by making &
adding their own decorated pieces to the
Backspace installation.

A lot of people have been asking ‘what
next?’ for the distinctive voice of Dave
Knowles now that he has retired from
presenting Accessing Arts on VOICE FM
Community Radio.
The short answer is that Dave is
expanding his horizons by returning to his
foundations in the performing arts;
the more nuanced response is that he is
seeking a lifestyle change that allows him
to enjoy his very catholic interests while
looking after his health.
Ballarat born, Dave has been on the scene around town almost
as long as most can remember. A fixture with the early BRRRR
Theatre Group, he soon became equally inseparable from the
experience of the dearly-beloved-deeply-lamented Grainery
Lane, where he was a veritable fundraising tyro. Developing
the Accessing Arts radio program, he then became a familiar
Wednesday evening wireless visitor and indefatigable opening
night guest for a decade, interviewing everyone who was
anyone or doing anything creative around town.
“Leaving Accessing Arts was the hardest decision I ever made,”
Dave says. “It was my idea, my baby, and I raised it to be what it
was.” It was also a great education in the arts for Dave, rich with
conversations, personalities and lots of insider gossip.
But with that behind him, Dave Knowles is looking to the future
with his usual energy and ambition. He continues as Vice
President of Ballarat Arts Alive and hopes to expand the group’s
realm to include more performing arts. He is mastering the art of
FaceBook, and is in discussion with a local organisation about
establishing a mentor program for artists with disabilities.
Dave Knowles is also on the hunt for volunteer opportunities.
So if you’ve got a project that needs someone with enthusiasm,
fundraising nous and great connections with the creative end of
town – Who You Gonna Call?
