Victoria Bassetti
Electoral Dysfunction
A Survival Manual for American Voters
Victoria Bassetti discusses the many issues surrounding
voting in the United States, in this eye-opening, fact-filled
companion to the PBS documentary of the same name.
Imagine a country where the right to vote is not guaranteed
by the Constitution, where the candidate with the most votes
loses, and where paperwork requirements and bureaucratic
bungling disenfranchise millions. You’re living in it. If the
consequences weren’t so serious, it would be funny.
Electoral Dysfunction illuminates a broad array of issues,
including the Founding Fathers’ decision to omit the right
to vote from the Constitution; the battle over voter ID, voter
impersonation, and voter fraud; the foul-ups that plague
Election Day, from ballot design to contested recounts; the
role of partisan officials in running elections; and the antidemocratic origins and impact of the Electoral College.
The book concludes with a prescription for a healthy voting
system by Heather Smith, president of Rock the Vote.

Black Fire
The True Story of the Original Tom Sawyer—and of the
Mysterious Fires That Baptized Gold Rush-Era San Francisco
The first biography of the little-known real-life Tom
Sawyer, told through a harrowing account of Sawyer’s
involvement in the hunt for a serial arsonist who terrorized
mid-nineteenth-century San Francisco.
When twenty-eight-year-old Mark Twain met Tom Sawyer
at a local bathhouse in 1863, he was seeking a subject for
his first novel. Twain learned that a dozen years earlier the
then-eighteen-year-old New York–born Sawyer had been
a “Torch Boy,” one of the youths who raced ahead of the
volunteer firemen’s hand-drawn engines at night carrying
torches to light the way, always aware that a single spark
could reduce the all-wood city of San Francisco to ashes in
an instant. At that time a mysterious serial arsonist known
by some as “The Lightkeeper” was in the process of burning
San Francisco to the ground six times in eighteen months—
the most disastrous and costly series of fires ever experienced
by any American metropolis.

Black Fire is the most thorough and accurate account of
Sawyer’s relationship with Mark Twain and of the six
devastating incendiary fires that baptized one of the modern
world’s favorite cities. Black Fire includes the never-beforetold stories of Sawyer’s heroism during the sinking of the
steamship Independence and the crucial role Sawyer and the
Torch Boys played in solving the mystery of the Lightkeeper.
Bestselling author Robert Graysmith vividly portrays the
gritty, corrupt, and violent world of Gold Rush–era San
Francisco, overrun with gunfighters, hooligans, hordes of
gold prospectors, crooked politicians, and vigilantes. By
chronicling how Sawyer took it upon himself to investigate,
expose, and stop the arsonist, Black Fire details—for the first
time—Sawyer’s remarkable life and illustrates why Twain
would later feel compelled to name his iconic character after
his San Francisco buddy when he wrote The Adventures of
Tom Sawyer.

David Cay Johnston
The Fine Print
How Big Companies Use “Plain English” and Other Tricks
to Rob You Blind
Bestselling author David Cay Johnston presents his
shocking analysis of the many ways everyday people are
systematically victimized by powerful corporations.
David Cay Johnston has made a name for himself as the
defender of the common man, calling out the rich and
powerful for cheating the system at the expense of everyone
else. Whether he’s exposing unjust loopholes in the tax code
that help the rich get richer or pointing out how powerful
corporations pocket government subsidies at excessive
taxpayer expense, Johnston is an eloquent town crier for
justice and equality.

Now this bestselling author has turned his attention to the
sneaky stipulations hidden in the fine print of just about every
contract and government rule. Johnston has been known to
whip out a utility bill—any utility bill—and explain line
by line what all that mumbo jumbo actually means (and
it doesn’t mean anything good, unless you happen to be
the utility company). Within all that jargon, disclosed in
accordance with all requirements to you, the unsuspecting
customer, lie the tools many companies use to rob you blind.
Even worse is what’s missing—all the contractually binding
clauses that companies hide elsewhere, yet still enforce.
The Fine Print is essential listening for anyone who wants to
wrest power back from devious corporations and end their
longstanding consumer abuse.

Isaac’s Army
A Story of Courage and Survival in Nazi-Occupied Poland
Matthew Brzezinski follows a group of dedicated young
men and women who waged a heroic war of resistance
against Hitler’s war machine.
Based on first-person accounts from diaries, interviews, and
surviving relatives, Isaac’s Army chronicles the extraordinary
triumphs and devastating setbacks that befell the Jewish
underground from its earliest acts of defiance in 1939 to the
exodus to Palestine in 1946. This is the remarkable true story
of the Jewish resistance from the perspective of those who led
it: Isaac Zuckerman, the confident and charismatic twentyfour-year-old founder of the Jewish Fighting Organization;
Simha Ratheiser, Isaac’s fifteen-year-old bodyguard, whose
boyish good looks and seeming immunity to danger made
him an ideal courier; and Zivia Lubetkin, the warrior queen
of the underground. Joined by allies on the left and right,
they survived Gestapo torture chambers, smuggled arms,
ran covert printing presses, opened illegal schools, robbed
banks, executed collaborators, and fought in the two largest
rebellions of the war.

Hunted by the Germans and bedeviled by the “Greasers”
the movement was chronically short on firepower but long
on ingenuity. The money they raised helped thousands hide

the Holocaust. And when the war was over, they helped
found the state of Israel.
A story of secret alliances, internal rivalries, and undying

From the bestselling author of The Two Trillion Dollar

In the thirty years after the Civil War, the United States blew

But as Charles R. Morris shows us, the platform for that
spectacular growth spurt was built in the first half of the
century. By the 1820s, America was already the world’s
most productive manufacturer, and the most intensely
commercialized society in history. The War of 1812 jumpstarted the great New England cotton mills, the iron centers
in Connecticut and Pennsylvania, and the forges around
the Great Lakes. In the decade after the War, the Midwest
was opened by entrepreneurs. In this book, Morris paints a
vivid panorama of a new nation buzzing with the work of
creation. He also points out the parallels and differences in
the nineteenth century American/British standoff and that
between China and America today.

Boss Rove
Inside Karl Rove’s Secret Kingdom of Power
Investigative reporter Craig Unger examines Karl Rove’s
politically controversial activities of the past, and sheds
light on the politician’s role in the upcoming presidential
election.
Karl Rove, the man who masterminded the rise of George
W. Bush from governor of Texas to the presidency, who
advised Bush during two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,
who some claim helped seize the 2004 election for Bush,
and who was at the center of the Bush administration’s two
biggest scandals—the Valerie Plame Wilson affair and the

Since exiting the Bush administration, Rove has quietly
become the greatest Republican power broker in the country.
His pulpit is much vaster than his role as a commentator on
Fox News and his regular columns for the Wall Street Journal
suggest. His real strength is his ability to mobilize immense
sums through the SuperPAC American Crossroads and
similar organizations, and channel that money on behalf of
Republican candidates.

Cofounder and chairman of

Richard E. Dauch, with Hank H. Cox
American Drive
How Manufacturing Will Save Our Country
Richard E. Dauch narrates the story of his successful
upstart manufacturing company and provides a blueprint
for job creation, manufacturing competitiveness,
economic growth, and excellence in America.
Richard E. “Dick” Dauch had long dreamed of running
his own manufacturing company. From his first job on the
plant floor at General Motors to his crucial role in helping
to rescue Chrysler from the brink of bankruptcy, Dauch
focused passionately, and relentlessly, on quality, productivity,
and flexibility in manufacturing. In 1993 he took on the
challenge of his life, buying a lagging axle supply and parts
business from GM, along with five rusting, unprofitable,
union-controlled, near-decrepit plants in the heart of a
crime-ridden Detroit and a deteriorating environment in
Buffalo, New York.

Richard E. Dauch is chairman, CEO, and co-founder
of American Axle and Manufacturing. He is a former
manufacturing executive at Chevrolet, Chrysler, and
Volkswagen, and has worked in the automotive industry
for more than forty-eight years. He is also coauthor, with

Pete Larkin, an AudioFile Earphones Award winner, has

announcer for the New York Mets from 1988 to 1993,
served as host of WNEW-FM’s highly rated “Saturday
Morning Sixties” program, and has done hundreds of
commercials, promos, and narrations.
The newly created “stand-alone” company was named
American Axle and Manufacturing. Dauch set out to create
a world-class industrial automotive manufacturer. He
bought and bulldozed the crack, liquor, and prostitution
businesses that surrounded the company and rebuilt the
plants. He upward educated, trained, and expanded the skill
sets of the workforce, struck tough bargains with unions, and
solved massive quality problems that were costing tens of
millions every year and undermining customer satisfaction.
Within one year of opening the doors, AAM had turned an
astounding sixty-six million dollars in profit.
In American Drive, Dauch narrates the story of AAM against
the backdrop of his nearly fifty years in the auto industry, from
its glory days to its decline in the face of foreign competition,
government bailouts, battles with unions, and the recent
Great Recession. Tough, smart, inspiring, high-energy, and
opinionated, Dauch offers memorable lessons on leadership,
advanced product technology, communication, negotiation,
and making profits in the most difficult times. Dauch’s story
transcends the auto industry and draws a blueprint for job
creation, manufacturing competitiveness, economic growth,
and excellence in America.

How Past Generations Shape Our Present and Predict
Our Future
From New York Times bestselling author and speaker Roy
H. Williams and business guru Michael R. Drew comes
a revolutionary book outlining the surprising societal
phenomenon that unlocks the secrets to success in the
worlds of business, politics, advertising, entertainment,
and more.
Politics, manners, humor, sexuality, wealth, even our
definitions of success are periodically renegotiated based on
the new values society chooses to use as a lens to judge what
is acceptable.
Are these new values randomly chosen or is there a pattern?
Pendulum chronicles the stuttering history of western
society; that endless back-and-forth swing between one
excess and another, always reminded of what we left behind.
There is a pattern and it is forty years: 2003 was a fulcrum
year, as was 1963, its opposite.

The bestselling author of The Ancient Alien Question sets
out to prove that civilization is far older and far more
advanced than is currently accepted.
Are history books giving us the whole story? Or is civilization
far more complex and for older than we have been taught?
Our school textbooks barely mention the 6,000-year-old
Sumerian civilization, yet the latest archaeological findings
at sites such as Jericho and, most recently, Gobekli Tepe in

Civilization goes back at least another 10,000 years, if we

Savage Continent
Europe in the Aftermath of World War II
The frightening and thrilling story of post World War
II Europe, from the end of the war right up until the
establishment of an uneasy stability across Europe toward
the end of the 1940s.
The aftermath of World War II was one of the most
tumultuous periods of European history. Individuals,
communities and sometimes whole nations sought
vengeance against the Germans and their collaborators
who were rounded up, tormented and summarily executed.
Concentration camps were reopened; violent anti-semitism
was reborn, sparking murders and pogroms; and massacres,
an integral part of the postwar landscape, led to brutal civil
wars. In some of the greatest acts of ethnic cleansing ever
seen, millions were expelled from their ancestral homelands,
often with the implicit blessing of the Allied authorities.
Savage Continent is the story of post WWII Eruope in
all its ugly detail. Based on primary sources from a dozen
countries, Savage Continent sets the standard for history
books on of post-WWII Europe for years to come.

A Man and His Ship
America’s Greatest Naval Architect and His Quest to
Build the S.S. United States
In the tradition of David McCullough’s grand histories,
the sweeping story of William Francis Gibbs’s quest to
build the fastest, finest ocean liner in history is set against
the politics, culture, and enterprise of twentieth-century
America.
At the peak of his power, in the 1940s and 1950s, William
Francis Gibbs was considered America’s best naval architect.
His quest to build the finest, fastest, most beautiful ocean
liner of his time, the S.S. United States, was a topic of national
fascination. When completed in 1952, the ship was hailed
as a technological masterpiece at a time when “made in
America” meant the best.

Gibbs was an American original, on par with John Roebling
of the Brooklyn Bridge and Frank Lloyd Wright of
Fallingwater. Forced to drop out of Harvard following his
family’s sudden financial ruin, he overcame debilitating
shyness and lack of formal training to become the visionary
creator of some of the finest ships in history. He spent forty
years dreaming of the ship that became the S.S. United States.
William Francis Gibbs was driven, relentless, and committed
to excellence. He loved his ship, the idea of it, and the
realization of it, and he devoted himself to making it the
epitome of luxury travel during the triumphant post–World
War II era. Biographer Steven Ujifusa brilliantly describes
the way Gibbs worked and how his vision transformed
an industry. A Man and His Ship is a tale of ingenuity and

One Shot at Forever
A Small Town, an Unlikely Coach, and a Magical Baseball
Season
From Sports Illustrated writer Chris Ballard, the
inspirational story of a coach, a baseball team, and the
season they’d never forget.
In 1971, a small-town high school baseball team from
rural Illinois playing with hand-me-down uniforms and
peace signs on their hats defied convention and the odds.
Led by an English teacher with no coaching experience,
the Macon Ironmen emerged from a field of three hundred
and seventy teams to become the smallest school in Illinois
history to make the state final, a distinction that still stands.
There, sporting long hair, and warming up to Jesus Christ
Superstar, the Ironmen would play a dramatic game against
a Chicago powerhouse that would change their lives forever.

and his work has twice been anthologized in the Best
American Sports Writing series. Chris is the author of
The Art of a Beautiful Game and The Butterfly Hunter, and
coauthor of Hoops Nation.
Chris Ballard tells the story of the team and its coach,
Lynn Sweet, a hippie, dreamer and intellectual who arrived
in Macon in 1966, bringing progressive ideas to a town
stuck in the Eisenhower era. Beloved by students but not
administration, Sweet reluctantly took over a rag-tag team,
intent on teaching the boys as much about life as baseball.
Inspired by Sweet’s unconventional methods and led by
fiery star Steve Shartzer and spindly curveball artist John
Heneberry, the undersized, undermanned Macon Ironmen
embarked on an improbable postseason run that infuriated
rival coaches and buoyed an entire town.
Beginning with Sweet’s arrival, Ballard takes listeners on a
journey back to the Ironmen’s historic season and then on to
the present day, returning to the 1971 Ironmen to explore
the effect the game had on their lives’ trajectories—and the
men they’ve become because of it. Engaging and poignant,
One Shot at Forever is a testament to the power of high
school sports to shape the lives of those who play them, and
it reminds us that there are few bonds more sacred than
those among a coach, a team, and a town.

Jonathan Gottschall
The Storytelling
Animal
How Stories Make Us Human
Jonathan Gottschall explores why we tell stories and what
stories reveal about human nature, in this original and
insightful book.
Humans live in landscapes of make-believe. We spin
fantasies. We devour novels, films, and plays. Even sporting
events and criminal trials unfold as narratives. Yet the world
of story has long remained an undiscovered and unmapped
country. It’s easy to say that humans are “wired” for story,
but why?
In this delightful and original book, Jonathan Gottschall
offers the first unified theory of storytelling. He argues that
stories help us navigate life’s complex social problems—just
as flight simulators prepare pilots for difficult situations.
Storytelling has evolved, like other behaviors, to ensure our
survival.

Kris Koscheski, narrator, director, and audio aficionado,
has worked on over four hundred audiobooks over the
last twelve years. He has produced and directed many
titles that have earned AudioFile Earphones Awards,
Audie Awards, and Grammy nominations.
Drawing on the latest research in neuroscience, psychology,
and evolutionary biology, Gottschall tells us what it means
to be a storytelling animal. Did you know that the more
absorbed you are in a story, the more it changes your
behavior? That all children act out the same kinds of stories,
whether they grow up in a slum or a suburb? That people
who read more fiction are more empathetic?
Of course, our story instinct has a darker side. It makes
us vulnerable to conspiracy theories, advertisements, and
narratives about ourselves that are more “truthy” than true.
National myths can also be terribly dangerous: Hitler’s
ambitions were partly fueled by a story. But as Gottschall
shows in this remarkable book, stories can also change the
world for the better. Most successful stories are moral—they
teach us how to live, whether explicitly or implicitly, and
bind us together around common values. We know we are
master shapers of story. The Storytelling Animal finally reveals
how stories shape us.

Claire Tomalin
The Invisible Woman
The Story of Nelly Ternan and Charles Dickens
Acclaimed biographer Claire Tomalin provides a
compelling portrait of Nelly Ternan, the struggling
actress whose affair with novelist Charles Dickens led to
scandal.
Charles Dickens and Nelly Ternan met in 1857; she was
18, a hard-working actress performing in his production of
The Frozen Deep, and he was 45, the most lionized writer
in England. Out of their meeting came a love affair that
lasted thirteen years and destroyed Dickens’s marriage while
effacing Nelly Ternan from the public record.
In this remarkable work of biography and scholarly
reconstruction, the acclaimed biographer of Mary
Wollstonecraft, Thomas Hardy, Samuel Pepys and Jane
Austen rescues Nelly from the shadows of history, not only
returning the neglected actress to her rightful place, but
also providing a compelling portrait of the great Victorian
novelist himself. The result is a thrilling literary detective
story and a deeply compassionate work that encompasses all
those women who were exiled from the warm, well-lighted
parlors of Victorian England.

Terence McKenna
Food of the Gods
The Search for the Original Tree of Knowledge : A Radical
History of Plants, Drugs, and Human Evolution
Terence McKenna traces the history of psychedelic drugs
and explores the relationship between plant life and
human beings, in his critically acclaimed counterculture
manifesto.
Terence McKenna hypothesizes that as the North African
jungles receded, giving way to savannas and grasslands
near the end of the most recent ice age, a branch of our
arboreal primate ancestors left the forest canopy and began
living in the open areas beyond. There they experimented
with new varieties of foods as they adapted, physically and
mentally, to the environment. Among the new foods found
in this environment were psilocybin-containing mushrooms
growing near dung of ungulate herds occupying the savannas
and grasslands.

Terence McKenna (1946-2000) was
a philosopher, psychonaut, researcher,
teacher, lecturer and writer on many
subjects, such as human consciousness,
language, psychedelic drugs, the
evolution of civilizations, the origin and
end of the universe, alchemy, and extraterrestrial beings.
He authored or coauthored several books, including
The Invisible Landscape, The Archaic Revival, True
Hallucinations, and Sacred Mushroom Seeker.
Ever since his first play at thirteen (his mother still
has the bellhop costume), Jeffrey Kafer has been an
avid performer on the stage and in voice-overs. He has
narrated over fifty books spanning all genres and won
the 2008 Voicey Award for Best New Voice.
Referencing the research of Roland L. Fisher, McKenna
claims the enhancement of visual acuity was an effect of
psilocybin at low doses and suggests this would confer
adaptive advantage. He argues that the effects of slightly larger
doses, including sexual arousal, and in larger doses, ecstatic
hallucinations & glossolalia—gave selective evolutionary
advantages to members of those tribes who partook of it.
There were many changes caused by the introduction of this
psychoactive to primate diets. He hypothesizes, for instance,
that synesthesia (the blurring of sensory boundaries) caused
by psilocybin led to the development of spoken language:
the ability to form pictures in another person’s mind through
the use of vocal sounds. About 12,000 years ago, further
climate changes removed psilocybin-containing mushrooms
from human diets. He argues that this event resulted in a
new set of profound changes in our species as we reverted
to the previous brutal primate social structures that had
been modified and/or repressed by frequent consumption of
psilocybin.

Dr. Mary’s Monkey

The 1964 murder of a nationally known cancer researcher

Bored of the Rings
A Parody
Bored of the Rings is the classic parody of J. R. R. Tolkien’s
fictional universe, a timeless comedic masterpiece that is
considered the standard by which all other parodies are
measured.
A quest, a war, a ring that would be grounds for calling any
wedding off, a king without a kingdom, and a furry little
“hero” named Frito, ready—or maybe just forced by the
wizard Goodgulf—to undertake the one mission that can
save Lower Middle Earth from enslavement by the evil
Sorhed. Luscious Elf-maidens, a roller-skating dragon, ugly
plants that can soul kiss the unwary to death—these are
just some of the ingredients in the wildest, wackiest, most
irreverent excursion into fantasy realms that anyone has ever
dared to undertake.
For everyone who has delighted in J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy
masterwork—or anyone who’s just looking for a good
laugh—Bored of the Rings is the “all-in-one-volume” comic
extravaganza that will convince lovers and haters of fantasy
that they’ve finally experienced it all, and that they’ll never
need to read another fantasy parody again.

Arielle DeLisle has been a producer and voice actor

Her first audiobook, Blood Angel by Justine Musk, was

In the early-morning hours of August 5, 1962, Los Angeles
County deputy coroner Ben Fitzgerald arrives at the home
of the world’s most famous movie star, now lying dead in
her bedroom, naked and still clutching a telephone. There
he discovers The Book of Secrets—Marilyn Monroe’s diary—
revealing a doomed love affair with a man she refers to
only as “The General.” In the following days, Ben unravels
a wide-ranging cover-up and some heartbreaking truths
about the fragile, luminous woman behind the celebrity.
Soon the sinister and surreal accounts in The Book of Secrets
bleed into Ben’s own life, and he finds himself, like Monroe,
trapped in a deepening paranoid conspiracy. The Empty Glass
is an unforgettable combination of the riveting facts and
legendary theories that have dogged Monroe, the Kennedys,
the Mafia, and even the CIA for decades. It is an exciting
debut from a remarkable new thriller writer.

Narcopolis
A Novel
A tale of vice and passion set against a backdrop of late1970s Bombay finds a New Yorker becoming entranced
with the underworld culture of an opium den and brothel
where he encounters a pipe-making eunuch, a violent
businessman, and a Chinese refugee.
Jeet Thayil’s luminous debut novel completely subverts and
challenges the literary traditions for which the Indian novel is
celebrated. This is a book about drugs, sex, death, perversion,
addiction, love, and god, and has more in common in its
subject matter with the work of William S. Burroughs or
Baudelaire than with the subcontinent’s familiar literary
lights. Above all, it is a fantastical portrait of a beautiful and
damned generation in a nation about to sell its soul. Written
in Thayil’s poetic and affecting prose, Narcopolis charts the
evolution of a great and broken metropolis.

Narcopolis opens in Bombay in the late 1970s, as its narrator
first arrives from New York to find himself entranced
with the city’s underworld, in particular an opium den
and attached brothel. A cast of unforgettably degenerate
and magnetic characters works and patronizes the venue,
including Dimple, the eunuch who makes pipes in the
den; Rumi, the salaryman and husband whose addiction is
violence; Newton Xavier, the celebrated painter who both
rejects and craves adulation; Mr. Lee, the Chinese refugee
and businessman; and a cast of poets, prostitutes, pimps, and
gangsters.
Decades pass to reveal a changing Bombay, where opium has
given way to heroin from Pakistan and the city’s underbelly
has become ever rawer. Those in their circle still use sex
for their primary release and recreation, but the violence
of the city on the nod and its purveyors have moved from
the fringes to the center of their lives. Yet Dimple, despite
the bleakness of her surroundings, continues to search for
beauty—at the movies, in pulp magazines, at church, and in
a new burka-wearing identity.
After a long absence, the narrator returns in 2004 to find a
very different Bombay. Those he knew are almost all gone,
but the passion he feels for them and for the city is revealed.

Freeman
A Novel
Set in the first few months following the Confederate
surrender and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln,
Sam—a runaway slave who once worked for the Union
Army—decides to leave his safe haven in Philadelphia
and set out on foot to return to the war-torn South.
Freeman takes place in the first few months following the
Confederate surrender and the assassination of Abraham
Lincoln. Upon learning of Lee’s surrender, Sam decides to
leave his safe haven in Philadelphia and set out on foot to
return to the war-torn South. What compels him on this
almost-suicidal course is the desire to find his wife, the
mother of his only child, whom he and their son left behind
fifteen years earlier on the Mississippi farm to which they
all “belonged.”
At the same time, Sam’s wife, Tilda, is being forced to walk
at gunpoint with her owner and two of his other slaves from
the charred remains of his Mississippi farm into Arkansas,
in search of an undefined place that would still respect his
entitlements as slaveowner and Confederate officer.

The Lost Daughter
A Novel
From the author of Nerves of the Heart comes a haunting
novel about three people locked in the grip of past
deeds—a story that reveals the profound ways in which
guilt can not only derail lives but also, sometimes, redeem
them.

So her adamant refusal to have a second child confounds
her husband, Sean. When Brooke’s high school boyfriend,
Alex—now divorced and mourning the death of his young
son—unexpectedly resurfaces, Sean begins to suspect an
affair.
For fifteen years Brooke has kept a shameful secret from
everyone she loves. Only Alex knows the truth that drove
them apart. His reappearance now threatens the life she
has so carefully constructed and fortified by denial. With
her marriage—and her emotional equilibrium—at stake,
Brooke must confront what she has been unwilling to face
for so long.

When Neill’s father committed suicide ten years ago, he
left behind thousands of pages of secret journals, journals
that are stunning in their detail, and, it must be said, their
complete banality. But their spectacularly quotidian details
were exactly what artificial intelligence company Amiante
Systems was looking for, and Neill was able to parlay them
into a job, despite a useless degree in business marketing and
absolutely no experience in computer science. He has spent
the last two years inputting the diaries into what everyone
hopes will become the world’s first sentient computer.
Essentially, he has been giving it language—using his father’s
words. Alarming to Neill—if not to the other employees
of Amiante—the experiment seems to be working. The
computer actually appears to be gaining awareness and,
most disconcerting of all, has started asking questions about
Neill’s childhood.
Amid this psychological turmoil, Neill meets Rachel. She
was meant to be a one-night stand, but Neill is unexpectedly
taken with her and the possibilities she holds. When Neill
discovers a missing year in the diaries everything Neill
thought he knew about his past comes into question, and
every move forward feels impossible to make.

The author of Ten Beach Road returns with a novel about
three women in need of a second chance . . . or is it a third?
Unlikely friends Madeline, Avery and Nicole have hit some
speed bumps in their lives, but when they arrive in Miami’s
South Beach neighborhood, they are all hoping for a doover. Literally. They’ve been hired to bring a once-grand
historic house back to its former glory on a new television

could restart her ruined career, and Maddie would have a

At least, that’s the plan—until the women realize that
while having their work broadcast is one thing, having their
personal lives play out on TV is another thing entirely. Soon
they are struggling to hold themselves, and the project,
together. With a decades-old mystery—and the hurricane

Once upon a time four aspiring authors met at their very
first writers’ conference. Ten years later they’re still friends,
survivors of the ultra-competitive New York publishing
world. Mallory St. James is a workaholic whose bestsellers
support a lavish lifestyle. Tanya Mason is a single mother
juggling two jobs, two kids, and too many deadlines. Faye
Truett is the wife of a famous televangelist and the author
of inspirational romances: no one would ever guess her
explosive secret. Kendall Aims’s once-promising career is on
the skids—and so is her marriage. Her sales are dismal, her
new editor detests her work—and her husband is cheating.
Barely able to think, let alone meet her final deadline,
Kendall holes up in a mountain cabin to confront a blank
page and a blanker future. But her friends won’t let her face
this trial alone. Together they collaborate on a novel using
their own lives as fodder, assuming no one will ever discover
the truth behind their words.
No one is more surprised than they are when the book
becomes a runaway bestseller. But with success comes
scrutiny and scandal . . . as these four best friends suddenly
realize how little they’ve truly known each other.

From the author of The Accidental Bestseller comes a
wonderfully entertaining book about what to do when life
comes at you full swing.
At forty-one, Vivian Armstrong Gray’s life as an
investigative journalist is crumbling. Humiliated after taking
a bullet in her backside during an exposé, Vivi learns that
she’s pregnant, jobless, and very hormonal. This explains why
she says ‘yes’ to a dreadful job covering suburban living back
home in Georgia, a column she must write incognito.
Down South, it’s her sister’s ballroom dance studio that
becomes her undercover spot where she learns about the
local life—and where unexpected friendships develop. As
she digs up her long buried roots, she starts to wonder if life
inside the picket fence is really so bad after all.

by his inability to save his family from slaughter. His
fury governs him, and day by day he loses himself to the
darkness in his soul. But Quinn has a profound yearning
for a woman’s love. . . .
Raised by Druids, the achingly beautiful Marcail is as
spellbinding as the ancient magic that surges through her
body. To Quinn, she is the most desirable woman he has
ever known. But to his enemy Deirdre, she is the perfect
bait to lure Quinn into her trap. Once the two lovers
are in her wicked grasp, their passion will be put to the
ultimate test.

Highland Destiny
Book One in the Murray Family Series
A powerful knight meets his match in a mysterious beauty
bent on revenge, in the first book in an exciting new series
by New York Times bestselling author Hannah Howell.
When destiny brought Sir Balfour Murray and his wounded
brother down the same road as Maldie Kirkaldy, she offered
her services as a nurse even as she tried to deny the desire
this dark-eyed knight had ignited at first sight. Soon they
discover that they both share a mission of vengeance, but
Maldie cannot tell him her true identity—to do so would
brand her a spy . . .
Sworn to avenge his family as chief of the Doncoill Clan,
Balfour vows to destroy his greatest foe, with Maldie at his
side. Yet Balfour knows that he can no more afford to trust
her than he can ignore his lust for this sultry beauty. Now,
he is not only determined to unearth her deepest secrets, but
also to pursue his passion for her. And nothing will stand in
his way . . .
