CLOCKSS
A Trusted Community-Governed Archive
Libraries and Publishers Join Forces
"As more and
more of our
collections
become electronic,
it is the
responsibility of
libraries to protect
these digital
collections for
future generations.
CLOCKSS is a
trusted model that
allows libraries to
take action as part
of a united
community."

In 2006, the world's largest scholarly publishers and top
research libraries, challenged by the responsibility to preserve
the digital assets of the community, joined forces to build a
global dark archive that keeps scholarship in the hands of the
community. Today, CLOCKSS (Controlled Lots of Copies
Keep Stuff Safe) is a not-for-profit organization run by all
participating publishers and libraries. The founding members
invite libraries and publishers to help build the archive and
move the community’s interests forward.
Why Participate in CLOCKSS?

Open access: Content no longer available from any
publisher ("triggered content") is available for free.
CLOCKSS uniquely assigns this abandoned and orphaned
content with a creative commons license to ensure that it
remains available, forever.

Community governed: The archive is managed by, and
for, its stakeholders, not a third party. Publishers and
librarians have equal say in deciding procedures, priorities,
and when to trigger content.

Distributed preservation: With 12 archive nodes around
the world, CLOCKSS's decentralized, geopolitically diverse
preservation model ensures that the digital assets of the
community will survive intact.

Low cost: CLOCKSS keeps costs as low as possible, so
that institutions of all sizes and budgets can participate.
CLOCKSS Fees for Libraries
Participation is affordable. Low operating costs make it possible for
institutions of all sizes and budgets to participate in CLOCKSS.
