LET’S MAKE NYC THE MEDIA CAPITAL OF THE WORLD
NYC Media Lab connects technologists in digital media and technology companies with bright
minds in New York City’s universities in order to drive innovation and talent development.
NYC Media Lab is a partnership between the City of New York, its institutions of higher
education, and the digital media and technology industry. The Lab hosts events and seeds
projects to foster collaboration across a range of disciplines core to the future of media.

OPEN SEED PROJECTS
Corporate members of NYC Media Lab take part in annual open seed projects, a
way to immediately plug into the cutting-edge talent and research taking place
across NYC’s universities. We invite a high degree of participation from member
companies, allowing them the ability to shape the questions and goals surrounding
each collaborative project. Seed projects can take various forms depending on the
needs of each company, such as a research project or prototype.
FOR INSTANCE:
AUTOMATIC VIDEO ANNOTATION CHALLENGE
MLB Advanced Media is experimenting with a wide range of technologies to improve its
ability to capture and annotate video metadata. Structured as a national competition, this
seed challenge seeks solutions to automatic video annotation to uncover key data from
archival video of baseball games by issuing a series of prizes.
VISUAL PROGRAMMING TOOLS FOR JOURNALISTS
News Corp has convened a working group with students and faculty from the NYU
Polytechnic School for Engineering and the Columbia University Graduate School of
Journalism to explore both the form and function of a data visualization and interactive
graphics toolkit for journalists. The project will establish what areas of development
would be necessary to advance a larger scale open source project.
NEWS AND MOBILE COMMERCE
NBCUniversal challenged NYC faculty and students to explore opportunities in delivering
and monetizing micro news content on their mobile game called “Ncredible.” Students
and faculty from the NYU MFA in Game Design program came together with executives
from NBCUniversal to playtest the game and give structured feedback.
PERSONALIZED MOBILE NEWS APPLICATIONS
Hearst Corporation invited students to apply for a fellowship around prototypes of new
mobile applications expressing the idea of content personalization. Five students were
chosen from NYU, SVA, and Parsons the New School for Design. The fellows designed,
iterated, and user-tested their applications while regularly consulting with Hearst
editorial and technical executives. Together, the fellows and the executives explored
questions such as: what kind of content is likely to engage individual users, and under
what conditions? What are the product experiences that not only provide the right context
for this personalized content, but can delight users?
THE FUTURE OF RETAIL
Publicis Groupe executives across four agencies collaborated with an academic team from
the MFA Design & Technology program at Parsons The New School for Design to imagine
the future of the retail experience. The Parsons students researched, developed, and usertested prototypes surrounding in-store navigation, interior design for pop-up stores, and
personalized body scanning for apparel shopping.
