Born in 1979, Jouve began studying the guitar in Chambéry, France, and obtained at the early age of 13 the “Premier Prix” of the Grenoble Conservatoire National de Région. This prize enabled him to be admitted to the studio of Eric Franceries, who was to become extremely important to Jouve’s early musical development. Moving to Paris at 18, he studied with Maestro Alberto Ponce at the Ecole Normale de Musique/Alfred Cortot and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse (CNSMDP), where continued on p. 3. After graduating with degrees in guitar and chamber music, Jérémy decided to broaden his musical horizons. He elected to join an advanced training course under the guidance of Laszlo Hadady, oboe soloist of the Paris-based Ensemble Intercontemporain. Already an award winner at several international competitions, in 2002 Jouve won First Prize at the Tychy International Guitar Competition (Poland) followed by First Prize at the prestigious International Guitar competition organized in Mexico during November 2003 by the Guitar Foundation of America. Following this success, he embarked upon a 40-recital tour of the United States, Canada and Mexico during the 2004-2005 season. Jérémy Jouve’s career has brought him to some of the most important stages and festivals of the musical world, including Moscow’s Tchaikowsky Hall, Germany’s Iserlhon Guitar Symposium, the French National Radio festival, the Sanok International Guitar Festival in Poland, the Alliances Francaises of India, and elsewhere in Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Greece, Italy, Switzerland and Macedonia, among other countries. It has been several years since her past performance for the Minnesota Guitar Society, and we’re delighted to welcome her back this Spring. I first heard Antigoni Goni in the 1990s when she gave a guest recital during the annual Christopher Parkening Guitar Masterclass at Montana State University in Bozeman. I particularly remember her extraordinary musicality. For Goni, technique is only a means to an end: “Technique should only and always be a humble servant of the music.” Ultimately, her goal is to move her audiences. She firmly believes in creating for her listeners “an artistic experience that touches [their] heart[s].” Ms. Goni’s career has been international from the beginning. While pursuing her first guitar studies in the 1980s with Evangelos Assimakopoulos at the National Conservatory of Sundin Music Hall 2014-15 Concert Series — At a Glance!! As a result, Leo Brouwer, the competition’s Artistic Director, recommended Goni to the Royal Academy of Music in London where she studied with John Mills and Julian Bream. She also attended masterclasses with Oscar Ghiglia in Siena, Italy. After moving to the United States, she studied with Sharon Isbin at Juilliard. Ms. Goni is the winner of many prizes at international competitions, among others the Julian Bream Prize and the Concerto Prize at the Royal Academy of Music in 1991, the Laureate Bayerischer Rundfunk International Competition in Germany in 1993, and the Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music Award in 1996. She won the Guitar Foundation of America Competition in 1995, recorded with Naxos, and toured North America with over sixty concerts. Additionally, Ms. Goni has given concerts at Wigmore Hall and Covent Garden (London), Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall (NYC), Spivey Hall (Atlanta), Benaroya Hall (Seattle), Herbst Theatre (San Francisco), Megaron Hall and Herodion Attikon, Akropolis (Athens), the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), the Bolshoi Theater (Moscow), at the Mikulov Festival (Czech Republic), in Novosibirsk (Russia), in Japan, and on Hawaii. As an internationally active guitar teacher, Goni founded in 1995 and headed, for ten years, the guitar department at the Juilliard Pre-College Division. Besides teaching seminars and masterclasses around the world, she has also served as Artist in Residence for San Francisco Performances, working with diverse students of all ages (see photo). In 2004, she returned to Europe and has since been Professor of Guitar at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, Belgium, as well as Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in London. Since 2006, Goni has been directing a new guitar institute, The Volterra Project , <http://www.volterraguitar.org>, which grew from her desire to pass on to young guitarists the collective wisdom and support she herself had received from others. Taking place in Volterra, Tuscany, Italy, this annual institute is an “innovative experiment in classical guitar training, offering a 360-degree formative course with highest level guitar master classes, music physiology training, and music business management seminars taught by experienced, internationally renowned continued on p. 5 This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Sundin Music Hall is handicap accessible and there is ample free parking available. 4 guitarist Community Concert—Local Artist Spotlight M aja Radovanlija is classical guitarist, improviser and guitar instructor from Belgrade, Serbia, currently based in Minneapolis. Her performances are notable for their intensity, humor and precision. She and her guitar become one instrument. She began studying guitar at the age of nine. She completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of Belgrade as a student of Prof. Srdjan Tosic. Maja came to the United States to study at Indiana University’s School of Music where she received both her master’s and doctoral degrees under Ernesto Bitetti, as well as to study early music with lutenist Nigel North. She has performed extensively as an international solo and chamber musician, touring Serbia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Macedonia, Greece, Tunisia, Switzerland and other European countries. She joined the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet in 2012, bringing an eclectic musical background including performances with Mu Daiko Japanese Theater and improvised concerts with guitarist/ composer Alex Lubet, as well as participating in workshops led by famous jazz musician Vojin Draskoci. Maja was awarded First Antigoni Goni, continued from p. 4 professionals.” It prepares young guitarists, in a non-competitive setting, for creating successful careers as performers. Students learn about human physiology and develop awareness of their own bodies to prepare for many years of practicing and performing in good health. They also practice “artistic socialization,” that is, they “coexist and exchange views, knowledge, experience” with their teachers. For Antigoni Goni, successfully navigating a performing career involves knowing how to nourish professional relationships with others—and doing so across international boundaries in an increasingly globalized world. The Volterra Project is sponsored by the Augustine Foundation, Galli Strings, march / april Prize at the International Competition in Kjustendil, Bulgaria, and Second Prize at the Petar Konjovic International Competition in Belgade. Maja won Second Prize at I.U.’s Latin American music competition, and in 2011 was appointed to the guitar faculty at the University of Minnesota - School of Music.
