Lent: Taking up
faith practices
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of
Lent, a season when God calls us to reflect on the meaning of Christ’s death
and resurrection. The imposition of ashes – when you receive ashes in the sign
of the cross on your forehead – sets the
tone for Lent. Each moment you encounter your reflection, your ashes are a
striking reminder that “you are dust, and
to dust you shall return” (Genesis
3:19b). But the cross, a symbol of Jesus’ crucifixion, offers hope.
Similarly, in baptism, you received the sign of the cross on your forehead. Many of us begin
our Christian life with baptism, called “to live among God’s faithful people, to hear the word
of God and share in the Lord’s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through
word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice
and peace in all the earth” (ELW 236). In the ELCA, we describe these instructions as faith
practices to guide our daily living. But what do faith practices mean? And how do we practice
them?
This Lent, as you begin your journey toward the baptismal waters of Easter, we invite you to
take up faith practices as a spiritual discipline. Each week leading up to Easter, you’ll find new
educational content on the ELCA’s Facebook page that offers insight into how you can integrate faith practices into your daily life.
To receive these updates, visit the ELCA’s Facebook page and “like” the page. Already liked
our page? Make sure you’ve turned on notifications to receive ELCA posts in your newsfeed.
Even if you’re not on Facebook, you can view the posts by visiting the ELCA’s Facebook page.
You can also learn more about the ELCA’s faith practices by downloading the guide “Faith
Practices in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.”

Living in

Grace and peace from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
The middle of February we received ashes on our foreheads and ushered in the season
of Lent. As we enter March we continue that journey until Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday
at the close of the month. As I have been thinking about hymns and songs to focus on, my
mind kept coming back to my favorite Palm Sunday hymn, “All Glory, Laud, and Honor.” I
knew it was an old hymn and I was curious if there was good story behind it’s creation. As I
did research I found that its origin fits well with the day it is sung.
Way back around 760 Theodulph of Orleans was born in Spain. Early in life he fled his
homeland due to the Moorish invasion. He fled to parts of modern day France. While there
he felt moved to a life of faith. He became a monk and resided in a monastery in that region.
In 786 he made a trip to Rome and was amazed at all the educational institutions. After that
visit he became a champion of public education. In 798 King Charlemagne made him Bishop of
Orleans. While bishop Theodulph set up many public schools outside of monasteries. He also
worked closely with Charlemagne to reform aspects of the church that they thought were in
error. His time as bishop also included many other important works.
Unfortunately the great King Charlemagne died in 814. His successor was his son Louis
the Pious. Louis’ nephew Bernard tried to break away from his uncle’s empire. He was talked
into surrendering. Bernard was punished by having his eyes put out, but died in the process.
In the aftermath Louis was paranoid and thought many in his court were plotting against him.
Theodulph was one that was accused. In 817 he was removed from his bishopric and exiled to
a monastery in Angers. While locked away and shut up he takes time to write a poem. It is
this poem that are the words of that great Palm Sunday Hymn, “All Glory, Laud, and Honor.”
In moments of deep despair Theodulph trusted in the sovereignty of God. His words are appropriate to sing as Christ enters into Jerusalem. Where all honors will be stripped from him,
and he will be hung on a tree. In 821 Theodulph dies as an outcast. Today his faith and love
for Christ live on through that amazing hymn.
In Christ,
Pr. Michael Neel

CHILI COOK OFF HIGHLIGHTS
Cook off was fun! There were 14 varieties of chili and some amazing desserts! First
place winner was Bill Behrens Jr. Then a 3 way tie for second with Becky Lee, MaryJo
Mott, and Ryan Bateman! Afterwards people socialized and played a variety of
board games and cards. The little kids burned off dessert with a little "hallway running.”
Coming soon...
Luther League
The Luther League has been quite busy this new year. February we played Bingo
with the residents of Hillside Nursing home. We had another Family Movie night
watching Big Hero 6. We also did the most popular of activities, our annual LOCKIN. Thank you to all the adults who came and supervised the kids, Pastor Neel,
Patricia Lippold, Emma Wallis and Brenda Karales.
With the Lenten season here, the Luther League will be very busy. We are preparing for our annual Ice Cream social on Palm Sunday. At the Ice Cream Social,
we will be serving sloppy joes, chips, applesauce, and of course ice cream. We
will have some fun activities for both young and old. We will have our annual
Easter Egg Hunt for 6th graders and younger. For the rest we will be having our
CAKE WALK. We would appreciate donations of baked goods. More information
to come.
The money raised at the Ice Cream social will help Luther League pay for the public service work we do. We make pillows and blankets for abused children, we
play Bingo (and provide prizes) with Hillside Nursing home, we walk in the Crop
walk, etc.
Sunday School
The Sunday School will be finishing up learning about the "Burning Bush" and start
learning about the time between Palm Sunday and Easter.
The 7th and 8th grade classes will continue with their confirmation studies and
the High School just finished learning about David and will be going into depth on
the life of Jesus while watching the movie that came out last year "Son of God".
There will be no Sunday School April 5th (Palm Sunday) and April 12th (Easter).
Palm Sunday -- Even though there is no Sunday School, we will still be assisting
Pastor with Palm Sunday followed by the Luther League's Ice Cream Social and
Easter Egg Hunt.
