Happy March to everyone, spring is definitely in the air!
With many travelling in March, we would like to remind you to take along a good
travel probiotic to protect your immune system and keep your digestive system
happy and healthy. For those of you heading to Mexico or the Caribbean take
along some grapefruit seed extract. Fantastic anti-parasitic and anti-fungal. Use it
to purify your water, clean vegetables or to prevent “travellers bug”. And don’t
forget your sunscreen. We have lots of natural, environmentally friendly sunscreen
in stock. And if you plan on travelling some distance, where there is a time change,
be sure to take along some Melatonin. It helps reset your internal clock, so you
can adjust with ease to the time change as well as it can reduce feelings of jet lag. If
you’re a nervous traveller, try some Bach Rescue Remedy. It helps reduce stress
and anxiety and is safe for all ages. Also great if you’re travelling with your pets.
With Spring just around the corner, allergy season is soon to follow. Be sure to
pick up the allergy basics - Quercetin, Probiotics, homeopathic hayfever and some
Breathe Easy tea. We have a amazing new Bio-Quercetin, 40 times more potent
than traditional Quercetin. It has powerful anti-histamine effects, proven in
clinically researched studies to be just as effective as pharmaceutical allergy
medication.
We hope everyone has a great March and a good Spring Break.
Hope to see you soon!
The Root’s Crew
Cocoa Cookie Batter Power Bites
These power bites are perfect for a post-workout pick-me-up. Form the balls all
at once and then store them in a sealed container in the refrigerator.
1 cup medjool dates
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1 tbsp coconut oil
1/4 cup non-dairy milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp sea salt
1/4 cup nut or seed butter (sunflower, almond, peanut, cashew)
11/2 cup quinoa flakes
In food processor, puree dates and water together.
In a small saucepan, combine date paste and cocoa powder. Heat while stirring
for 2 to 3 minutes.
In a large bowl, combine date mixture with coconut oil, milk, vanilla, salt and
nut butter. Mix in quinoa flakes to thoroughly combine.
Cover and chill mixture for one hour. Roll mixture into 1 inch balls.
Combat Diabetes
Chia is being studied as a potential natural treatment for type-2 diabetes because of
its ability to slow down digestion. The gelatinous coating chia seeds develops when
exposed to liquids-can also prevent blood sugar spikes.
High Fibre
Just a 28-gram or one-ounce serving of chia has 11 grams of dietary fibre — about a
third of the recommended daily intake for adults.
Rich In Omega 3
Chia seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, with nearly five thousand
milligrams in a one-ounce serving.
Strong Teeth And Bones
A serving of chia seeds has 18 per cent of the recommended daily intake for
calcium, which puts you well on your way to maintaining bone and oral health, and
preventing osteoporosis.
Don't Forget Manganese
Manganese isn't a well-known nutrient, but it's important for our health: it's good for
your bones and helps your body use other essential nutrients like biotin and
thiamin. One serving of chia seeds, or 28 grams, has 30 per cent of your
recommended intake of this mineral.
Packed With Protein
Chia seeds also make a great source of protein for vegetarians and don't have any
cholesterol. One 28-gram serving of these super seeds has 4.4 grams of protein.
Fight Belly Fat
Chia's stabilizing effect on blood sugar also fights insulin resistance which can be
tied to an increase in belly fat.
Improve Heart Health
Chia seeds have been shown to improve blood pressure in diabetics, and may also
increase healthy cholesterol while lowering total, LDL, and triglyceride cholesterol.
The Wonderful Healing Properties
of Kelp Liquid Extract
Kelp is an excellent source of 70 vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, proteins,
and enzymes, earning it a status as a green “superfood”. The sea water it grows
in contains an abundance of trace elements and these are absorbed by the kelp
and converted to an organic form that can be absorbed by the human digestive
tract.
Kelp is especially valued for its iodine content, which is important for normal
thyroid gland function and regulation of metabolism and body weight. Kelp is
a rich source of potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and vitamins A, B1, B2,
C, D, E, and K. One study has shown that vegans consuming seaweeds had
serum vitamin B12 levels twice as high as those who did not eat seaweed. Kelp
also contains high levels of lignans, which have been linked to a reduced risk
for some cancers.

Natural
Recovery for
Stroke Patients
From a natural perspective,
Ginkgo biloba extract is key to
stroke recovery. It increases
blood flow to the brain, boosts
energy within nerve cells, and
favourably affects blood
thickness. The recommended
dosage is 240—320 mg daily
(less if you take Coumadin).
Several supplements can help
prevent blood clots, including
omega-3 fatty acids,
antioxidants, flavonoids, grape
seed and pine bark extracts,
and garlic. Fish oil (up to
3,000 mg per day EPA +
DHA) and flavonoid-rich
extracts appear to be able to
be used safely in combination
with aspirin and other platelet
inhibitors. However, using
multiple natural antiplatelet
agents at the same time may
increase bleeding tendencies
when combined with
antiplatelet drugs (including
Plavix and Ticlid).
Two forms of choline have
shown promise in aiding
stroke recovery: citicoline
(CDP-choline) and
glycerophosphocholine
(GPC). In one six-month trial
that followed 2,044 stroke
patients, GPC was found to
significantly help the recovery
more than 95 percent of
participants—without side
effects. Choose one of the
following: citicoline:
1,000—2,000 mg daily or GPC
600—1,200 mg daily. There
are no known interactions
between citicoline or GPC and
Coumadin or anti-platelet
drugs.
