About Agra
Agra, the land of the Taj Mahal, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is situated on the banks of River
Page 1/11
Yamuna in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is bounded by Mathura district in the north, Dhaulpur district in the south,
Firozabad in the east and Bharatpur in the west.
History of Agra
Agra is mentioned in the epic Mahabharata. Even before that, the city was referred to as Arya Griha or ‘home of the
Aryans’. Sikandar Lodhi of the Delhi Sultanate is believed to have founded modern day Agra in 1504. After his death,
his son Ibrahim Lodhi continued to rule, until his defeat in the first battle of Panipat at the hands of the Mughal Emperor
Babur in 1526.
People & Culture of Agra
Agra owes a large part of its heritage and culture to Mughal rulers like Babur, Akbar, Jahangir and Shahjahan among
others. Each of these emperors added not only to the architectural brilliance of the city but also to its history and culture.
While Babur introduced the Persian-styled gardens, Akbar built the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. Shahjahan’s Taj
Mahal, the eternal monument of love built in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, marks the pinnacle of Mughal
architecture.
The Department of Tourism organises the Taj Mahotsav in February every year, which attracts national and
international tourists to the Agra. The festival celebrates Mughal art and culture and is a profusion of musical and dance
performances, a food festival and crafts mela.
Things to do in Agra
Agra’s rich historical background is reflected through its numerous monuments. Apart from the Taj Mahal, the city is
home to other UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort, and has carved a place for itself on
the world tourism map. Other attractions of this historical city include Sikandra, Itmadud Daula, Soor Sarovar, Jama
Masjid, Diwan-i-Am, Buland Darwaza, etc.
Travelling to Agra
Agra is well connected by air, rail and road. The nearest airport to reach Agra is Kheria Airport, located at a distance of
8 km from the city centre and is connected to various cities in the country including Delhi and Varanasi.
The city has four major railway stations – Agra Cantt, Raja ki Mandi, Agra Fort and Idgah Agra Junction. Agra can also
be reached by road from Lucknow (over 300 km), Kanpur (over 70 km) and Delhi (200 km).
Tourist buses run by private operators as well as state run buses are available to reach Agra.
Travelling within Agra
Tourists can travel around the city of Agra using electric buses, Tongas, tempos, cycle rickshaws and auto rickshaws.
All major areas are covered through Electric buses in Agra, but these are usually crowded. Tourists can also use
Tongas; horse drawn carriages, to explore the city. Tonga charges are around Rs 5 to 15 per person.
The city has a sub-tropical climate. The summer season, from April to September, can be hot with temperatures rising to
45° Celsius at times. The best time to visit Agra is from October to March.
Accommodation Options in Agra
Ranging from budget hotels to luxury hotels the accommodation options in Agra are plenty. Agra hotels offer
accommodation options to suite all budgets.

Featured review about Agra
A mesmerizing city
"This was not the first trip of course. Had been there three time already before. The iconic structure of Taj Mahal is such
that it beckons you repeatedly. The lure of driving down the yamuna expressway to reach agra from delhi in a jiffy was
the immediate trigger, the prospect of escaping the drudgery of office work and spend a relaxing week end at agra in
the company of your loved one (i mean my wife exactly!!! ) and say "wah taj" was very inviting indeed. So just packed
our bags and revved up the throbbing machine. It was an exotic drive though through some dense fog in early hours of
the day.
Spent a half of the day at Taj Mahal. Every time one stands in front of the edifice, you are left wondering at the skill of
the artisans who built it. The beauty of taj mahal does not need any elaboration i am sure. It is sheer poetry in stone
indeed. We were left mesmerizing once again.
Online ticketing facility for taj mahal is a very welcome initiative. No standing in long queues and we managed a smooth
entry through east gate. Conservation efforts for a heritage monument that is taj mahal, needs to be little better i
thought. One area which must be regulated is the number of visitors to be allowed, especially in the peak seasons.
The agra fort also has a character of its own. It seems like a flash back into history during the walk around. Story unfolds
itself as you walk past. A bit of disappointment is that barely one third of the fort expanse is open to visitors. Skipped
fatehpuri-sikri this time. It is worth the visit nevertheless. Evening stroll in sadar bazar was very interesting. Savoured
the street food variety on display. Never miss the hot milk served with mawa." - Tk Sanyal, New Delhi, 1 month ago
Return to Agra
"After spending a few years in the wilderness, followed by 3 years in Hyderabad (1 yr) and Pune (2 yrs), I have come
back to Agra. Back because I have stayed here before. After spending 2 months here, here is my initial impression of
the place.
It is a city caught in a time warp. There is almost no change, except few cosmetic ones from what I experienced 10
years ago. Yes, there are more bikes on the road and some new stores struggling to make an impression. However,
scratch a little deeper and the same grit and grime is evident. Traffic is horrible, with everyone wanting to get ahead at
the same time. If ever we come to the age of flying cars, Agra will be the first to adopt it, for sure. Youngsters and the
not so young have their thumbs on the horn as they drive or rather swerve through traffic, maybe all are blessed with
nine lives here and they know it.
The main market of Sanjay Place and Sadar Bazaar seem to be holding still in time. Some new showrooms have
opened up which exist in close harmony with familiar street vendors and smaller shops. The overall appearance is of an
ageing diva trying hard to look attractive by applying an overdose of cosmetics.
Some malls had opened up a few years ago but have since closed down or are on their last legs. Few multiplexes do
function but do not see much patronage. Maybe the ticket cost is too high or the location is wrong or both.
Some big chains have made an appearance, Reliance Fresh, Shoppers Stop, Easy Day etc but they are actually
caricatures of their stores in bigger cities. Even they seem to be denying the 'City of Taj' a decent treatment.
The Taj however, stands majestic and in company of Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, attracts tourists from far and wide.
The guide, cab driver, rickshaw puller, shopkeeper nexus is at its best, like any other tourist spot in the world. Tourists,
beware and look out for yourself. The brave souls who do come here and justly rewarded by the stunning view of the Taj
and the marvellous architecture of the Taj, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. Maybe the squalor all around makes these
places seem even more grand.
The locals are just like any other small town of UP. The youngsters are aspirational and eager to adopt the new age life
Page 3/11
and get into the fast lane but trapped by circumstances and tradition. Coaching classes abound; if only a magic formula
to success could be taught! Tempers run high at the smallest provocation. The govt seems to be trying to break the
mould and blow new life into the city but the progress is halting at best. A sincere push is required to get the city out of
its chains of decay and ennui else it may just remain a footnote in the geography of India; a sad commentary for a city
that is home to the most beautiful monument to love in the world." - harri, Delhi, Dec 4, 2013
Agra - the place of Taj
"Agra - the very name brings back the memories of the might Mughals. It was this place from where rulers used to rule
the lenght and breadth of the country. Thankfully, the place still bears the testimony of the grandeur of the Mughal
empire with its majestic structures and above all - the TAJ MAHAL, one of the identities of India throughout the world.
Agra has 3 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri.
Fatehpur Sikri, about 50 kms. from Agra is the starting point from which one stares at awe at the magnificent
accomplishments of the Mughals. The memories of Emperor Akbar,Queen Jodha Bai, Raja Man Singh, Birbal, Abul
Fazal, Faizi - will appear at every corner.
Agra Fort, inside Agra, is another master piece. The throne of Emperor Akbar alonwith Dewaan-i-Khas, Deewan-i-Aam
rekindles the nostalgic feelings of any history lover.
Eitmad-Ud-Daulah, the 'Baby Taj', is one many misses on the trip to Agra. On the opposite side of the Jamuna, this
mauseleum of the father of Nur Jahan, Ghias-ud-Din Beg is sadly missed in front of the Taj. The marble work and the
architectural beauty is not to be missed for sure.
Sikandra, (10 km north of Agra on the Agra Delhi highway). The tomb of Akbar lies here in the centre of the large
garden. Akbar started its construction himself but it was completed by his son Jehangir, who significantly modified the
original plans which accounts for the somewhat cluttered architectural lines of the tomb. Four red sandstone gates lead
to the tomb complex: one is Muslim, one Hindu, one Christian, and one is Akbar\'s patent mixture.
Lastly, the best. The eternal Taj Mahal. Nowhere in the world, one can find a symbol of love of such a magnitude. This
magnanimous structure taking 20 years for construction is a testimony of the love that Emperor Shah Jahan built for his
beloved wife Mumtaz.Words should not be spent on the Taj as the sheer beauty cannot be expressed by vocabulary.
One must see to feel and believe.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Food is of secondary or tertiary importance when one is in Agra. There is no speciality
in Agra as far as food is concerned. The 'petha', a sweet is though famous.
Shopping is largely limited near the Eastern gate of the Taj for mostly mementos.
Activities & things to do: There is no other activity in Agra than to see the beautiful monuments. Agra is not the kind of
place where one should even look, leave aside think of, leisure activities. When in Agra, take yourself back to the
Mugha Era and just feast your eyes on the magnificent monuments.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Agra is well connected by train. Agra contonment, Agra fort stations cater
to numerous trains. The local Kheria Airport, is not a busy one. The nearest airport for all aspect is New Delhi, about 250
kms. By road, Agra is well connected with Delhi (NH2 & NH8), Jaipur, Gwalior." - Sumit Roy, Kolkata, May 25, 2011
A Journey into the centuries gone by--Destination Agra
"Agra, which is known the world over for the Taj mahal, has much more to offer than this beautiful monument, especially
to those who have a feel for history! The magnificient Fort brings to your mind the fickleness of fate, because it was in a
corner of this fort that the erstwhile Emperor Shahjehan was imprisoned by his son. The nearby Fatehpur Sikri brings to
your mind's eye the fervent prayers of Akbar the Great and his Queen for a son.The city deserves a leisurely visit to
imbibe all this!
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Beyond the mandatory visit to the
Taj, one must visit the Agra fort. It was in one corner of this fort that Shahjehan spent his last days as a prisoner, gazing
Page 4/11
at the Taj where his beloved queen was buried. You must also vist Fatehpur Sikri(30 km). The city which was chosen as
a capital but could not function as one. Amongst the modern attractions a visit to Dayal bagh is educative as an
example of meticulous administration. Agra, however,is not only ancient history; it has modern shopping centres and
beautifully carved artifacts in marble and leather products are must-buys.
Activities & things to do: Plenty of places to visit and hence you keep occupied in sight-seeing.The luxury hotels
organise entertainment in the evenings, but if you are staying in a modest place a stroll on the Sadar bazar offers a
pleasant pastime.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Agra is well-connected with all major cities of India. You must avoid the
summer months as it is extremely hot there. Also beware of touts who will try to take you to particular hotels or shops." Ravi, Gurgaon, May 2, 2006
