Upon determining the grade level for which the unit will be implemented, the following questions can serve as a guide to creating your thematic unit: 1. What type of a theme will interest the students? 2. What is the best placement for the theme in order to match the curriculum sequence? (fall, spring, January, etc.) 3. What type of a theme will support learning in other academic areas? Upon determining your theme and examining your curricula for the best month to implement, you are now ready to begin organizing song material and listening examples. Make a list of the songs and activities you will use and indicate how they will be utilized for each music element within your curriculum (e.g., prepare, present, practice, assess). The materials listed below can be used for a Transportation Theme. The suggested grade level is 4th Grade. Figure 1 provides a list of music elements commonly associated with a Grade 4 curriculum. Other academic areas of study include geography, visual arts, language arts (poetry and vocabulary), science, and math. A culminating activity or program at the end of the thematic unit allows students share their accomplishments with other grade levels within the school and parents. Program ideas for this theme could include assigning each class a category (ship, train, etc.) of transportation. Students can “perform” the evolution of transportation systems through singing, movement, and instruments. Individual students reading poetry, presenting research information, or discussing artwork can serve as transitions between each transportation system. Involve the art specialist and classroom teachers and encourage them to have the children draw pictures of the modes of transportation to display throughout the room. I have de6initely used music with pre-recorded accompaniments in the past and may in the future. However, my students this fall showed me the simplicity, beauty and pride in creating our own music for our holiday concert. Part of this development was purely by accident. I took a position at a school with limited resources and random instruments that hadn’t been used in ages. At the beginning of the year, I might as well have been speaking Greek when I asked students to “step to the beat.” Also, due to some parent concerns, none of our songs for our Holiday concert could mention aspects of any particular holiday. As I started to work with students, I tried doing similar things with classes in a similar grade level with disastrous results. How was I going to retain the interest of all children, challenging young musicians at various levels? Also, how was I going to create a program that 6it the theme of a “Holiday Concert” but did not mention a holiday? I decided to allow my young musicians to create our music to share to allow for differing skill levels and provide a rationale for any “holiday” references. Below are a few ideas that I realized were critical to a quality music performance. 1. Give young musicians a song or rhyme or problem to focus initial efforts. 2. Let go of the need for recorded music. There is something beautiful, elegant, and innocent about the pure voices of children and their instruments. Could I have used recorded music? Perhaps in another setting. However, my musicians had not had a chance to play instruments with their previous teacher and the children needed to play instruments. 3. Provide opportunities for young musicians to create. Creative activities can have more structure or less structure depending on the situation, time, student proclivities, etc. I provided an initial prompt, allowed for creative ideas, and organized the 6inal format as this was our 6irst performance. 4. Don’t sell young musicians short! Kids can do more than we think. One class of 1st-3rd grade musicians performed 6ive ostinatos at the same time. I had previously only assumed that musicians in 3rd grade could perform a maximum of 4 parts at once. Perhaps I just need to stay out of their way! 5. Listen to children: What are they saying out loud? What are they saying with their behavior? What makes each class thrive? While it IS a little more work to create slightly different approaches for various classes, when you see children thriving, all efforts are worth it! Especially in a music class, children cannot be taught like they are on an assembly line. In our desire to re6ine our process and our own teaching, let’s remember that the most import in6luence on our teaching is not our approach. Our process needs to be guided by our young musicians entrusted to us that look at us with eyes of wonder at the magic of music making!
