Welcome once again to the Professional BusinessWomen of California’s
Annual Conference. This is our 26th year of delivering first-rate
programming designed to engage, inform, inspire and motivate
change. Thank you all for taking the time to be with us today.
This year, our conference theme is One Life,
One Legacy: Making the Most of You. We hope
each of you will come away from today with
a broader perspective, a crisper vision and
renewed resolve. When we strive to achieve our
own personal best, we broaden the road and
make the way smoother and easier for those
marching beside us as well as those coming up
behind.
As our organization enters its second quartercentury — we are indeed 26 years old — we look
back with pride at PBWC’s accomplishments:
the lives we have touched (more than 100,000
conference attendees and counting), the
consistent and high-quality programming we
have delivered, the incredible speakers we
have had the privilege of hearing from, and the
phenomenal women (and men too) who have
supported PBWC as members, volunteers and
leaders. Our organization is characterized by
clarity of purpose, strength of leadership, and
breadth of community support. Our legacy is one
of enduring value.

inspiring legacies, while still emerging and

Congresswoman Speier founded PBWC, and
this is just one of many accomplishments in a
tremendous track record that demonstrates
the tenacity of her character, the strength of
her vision, and the depth of her commitment
to advancing women. Among the issues she
is leading on Capitol Hill are the safety of our
daughters on college campuses and protection
from sexual assault for the servicewomen and
men in the U.S. military who put their lives on
the line to protect our country. Congresswoman
Speier’s life is inspirational to all of us. Her legacy
is already apparent. And, as you will see when
she speaks to us today, she continues to make
the most of every opportunity to advance the
position of women and strengthen this nation for
generations still to come.

Leymah Gbowee
Nobel Peace Laureate and
Liberian Women’s Rights Activist
Liberian peace and women’s
rights activist Leymah Gbowee is
the Newsweek Daily Beast’s Africa
columnist. As war ravaged Liberia,
Gbowee realized it is women who
bear the greatest burden in prolonged conflicts. She began organizing Christian and Muslim women
to demonstrate together, founding
Liberian Mass Action for Peace and
launching protests and a sex strike.
Gbowee’s part in helping to oust
Charles Taylor was featured in the
documentary Pray the Devil Back to
Hell. Gbowee is a single mother of
six, including one adopted daughter, and is based in Accra, Ghana,
where she is the executive director
of the Women Peace and Security
Network (WIPSEN-Africa).
In October 2007, the Women’s Leadership Board at Harvard
University’s John F. Kennedy School
of Government honored Gbowee
with the Blue Ribbon Peace Award.
This annual award is given to individuals and organizations that have
made a significant contribution to
peace-building through innovative
strategies that promote women’s
leadership in peace processes on
the local, national or international

Carolyn Buck Luce

Carolyn Buck Luce is the
co-founder and executive-in-residence at the Center for Talent Innovation as well as the managing partner
of Hewlett Consulting Partners. She
is currently leading a global research
project, “The Power of the Purse: The
Implications of the SHEconomy on
the Transformation of the Healthcare
Industry,” scheduled for publication
March 2015. She is also an adjunct
professor at Columbia University
teaching “Women and Power.”
Buck Luce spent the last two decades as a principal at Ernst & Young,
most recently as Global Life Sciences
Leader responsible for serving global
life sciences companies with a full
range of advisory and consulting
services. Prior to that, she spent 17
years in lending, investment banking,
strategy consulting and government
service. She started her career working for the U.S. State Department in
the Soviet Union, stationed in Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Moscow.
She has served as board chair of
the New York Women’s Foundation,
as a member of the Global Advisory
board of the Healthcare Women’s
Business Association, and, in 2007,
was appointed by Mayor Bloomberg
as a commissioner of the New York
City Commission on Women’s Issues.
Her passion for the transformation of the healthcare industry and

together as she was named the HBA

Jackie Speier has lived her
entire life inside California’s 14th
Congressional District and in April
2008 was elected to represent the
district in Congress. Previously she
had served the residents of the San
Francisco Peninsula while on the
San Mateo County Board of Supervisors and later in the California
State Assembly and State Senate.
In total she has over 29 years of
representative public service.
Jackie serves on the Committee on Oversight and Government
Reform, where she is Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Energy
Policy, Healthcare, and Entitlements,
and on the House Armed Services
Committee. In January 2013, Jackie
was appointed to serve as a vice
chair of a new congressional Gun
Violence Prevention Task Force that
is investigating new steps Congress
can take now and in the future to
reduce gun violence and prevent
massacres like the shooting at
Sandy Hook Elementary School in
Newtown, Connecticut.
Jackie routinely speaks on the
House floor about men and women
in our armed forces who have been
raped or sexually assaulted while in
the line of duty. She has also taken
a lead role in improving delivery of
VA benefits to Bay Area veterans.
In 2012, Newsweek named
Jackie to its list of 150 “fearless
women” in the world.
Award-Winning Journalist and
News Anchor
Soledad O’Brien is an Emmy
and Peabody Award-winning journalist, documentarian, news anchor
and producer. O’Brien was the
originator of Black in America and
Latino in America.
In 2010, she wrote a critically
acclaimed memoir, The Next Big
Story: My Journey through the Land
of Possibilities, which chronicles
her biggest reporting moments
and how her upbringing and
background have influenced these

Betsy Sutter
Corporate Senior Vice President and Chief People Officer, VMware
Betsy Sutter joined VMware in January 2001 and has led all aspects of VMware’s
people strategies, bringing more than 30 years of human resources leadership. Sutter
is responsible for hiring, developing and retaining the best and brightest people as
VMware has grown from 100 to more than 15,000 employees. Sutter has overseen the
successful acquisition of more than 25 companies and has built a world-class recruiting and staffing organization. Prior to VMware, Sutter held senior management roles

Wesley E. (Wes) Lohec is responsible for Chevron’s Health, Environment and Safety
strategic planning and issues management, compliance assurance, and emergency
response. He also is responsible for Chevron’s Environmental Management Company,
which manages environmental remediation and abandonment liabilities. Previously,
Lohec served as managing director of the Latin America strategic business unit from
2008 to 2011 for Chevron Africa and Latin America Exploration and Production Company in Caracas, Venezuela, and was responsible for business in the region.

Sociologist, Clayman Institute for Gender Research, Stanford University
Marianne Cooper is a contributor to LeanIn.org. She was the lead researcher
for Sheryl Sandberg’s book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead. She is
an expert on gender, family life, work, and social inequality. She writes, speaks,
and consults about these issues for media outlets, companies, and professional
groups such as Amazon, American Express, and Kraft. Her book Cut Adrift: Families in Insecure Times examines how families are coping in an insecure age. She
received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley.
Sara Jordan-Bloch
Sociologist, Clayman Institute for Gender Research, Stanford University
Sara Jordan-Bloch is a core team member of the Voice & Influence program,
designed to help men and women be as effective as possible and create workplaces where all people can thrive. She also leads the Seeds of Change initiative,
which aims to provide young women and girls with frameworks, knowledge, and
skills to find and strengthen their own voice and to navigate critical transitions
such as starting college and entering the workforce. Jordan-Bloch received her
B.A. in sociology from Brown University and her Ph.D. in sociology from Stanford

neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media agree there is a “boy crisis,” and Jennifer will share with
us the empirical evidence and tactics to combat it. The Mask You Live In ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise

Jennifer Siebel Newsom is revolutionizing the way women are portrayed in the

While working in Hollywood, however, she quickly became dismayed at how women
were presented in front of the camera, and realized she needed to do something.
So Newsom decided to take matters into her own hands and step behind the camera. The result was the award-winning documentary, Miss Representation, which

America, and challenged the media’s disparaging portrayals of women. She later
produced the Oscar-nominated documentary, The Invisible War, which unveils the
epidemic of rape in the U.S. military. Newsom’s latest documentaries are The Mask

Ubuntu Africa’s Most Important Teaching

Boyd Varty will be using the medium of African storytelling to introduce attendees to the value of Ubuntu. Ubuntu
means “I am because of you.” It is the discovery of how people and in fact the whole natural world can help us to
deepen our own humanity. Boyd’s stories of his time with Nelson Mandela, his experiences in the African bush with his
friend and tracker Solly Mhlongo, as well as other encounters with wildlife will help us to showcase how Ubuntu is an
act of embodiment that can enrich each of our lives and change our working environments.

Boyd Varty was born to a family of conservationists in the African bush, and
grew up surrounded by the people and animals who were part of the family’s
dream to “restore Eden.” As a child, he shared his home with lions, leopards,
snakes, and elephants. As a university student, he studied psychology and ecology, supplementing his education by learning martial arts in Thailand, hiking
through the jungles of the Amazon, and apprenticing himself to a renowned
tracker from the Shangaan tribe to deepen his intimate knowledge of the natural world. Varty is a coach who introduces First World seekers to the art of inner
tracking.
Mary Tidlund
Founder and President, The Mary A. Tidlund Charitable Foundation
Mary A. Tidlund was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and adopted at the
age of seven by a loving Calgary family. Along with three other adopted
children, Mary shared her childhood with at least 45 foster children whom her
parents nurtured and loved. Later in her life, she reunited with her birth families. After completing a science degree in geography, Mary began a 15-year
career in the oil industry, later becoming president and CEO of a publicly
traded oil exploration and service company. She located the head office for
the company in rural Arcola, Saskatchewan, where she was committed to
the community through her entrepreneurial work. Mary’s commitment was
recognized nationally in 1993 when she was a finalist in the Canadian Women
Entrepreneur Awards. In addition, Mary received an In Award for having the
most impact on a local community. The Mary A. Tidlund Charitable Foundation is a public foundation that has grown to work in 26 countries with over
80 programs. Key foundation initiatives include delivering medical clinics
and workshops, constructing schools, medical facilities and playgrounds,
educational sponsorship, water, and micro finance projects. Focusing on
women and children, Mary’s long-term goal is to empower individuals to
provide for themselves and create self-sustaining programs that have broad
community impact.

residential real estate in the San Jose area. In 2004, Wanda was honored as the 2004 recipient of PBWC’s Working Woman Scholarship.
This award helped Wanda to graduate with a bachelor of arts from
San Jose State University in 2011. Wanda is passionate about the
issues facing women in the workplace.
With over 25 years in the IT industry, leading the NorCal sales team has
been one of the most exciting roles for Katy in her 17 years at Microsoft. Committed to sales excellence and customer loyalty, Katy has
been recognized with a number of awards for her sales achievement,
management, and leadership. She is especially proud of her local team
winning the FY14 District of the Year. Katy is passionate about empowering women and supporting local community organizations ensuring
food and housing security. A San Francisco native, Katy is a mother of
three who enjoys running and yoga in her free time.

Jill leads an international team of 32 customs experts responsible for
strategy and execution of Cisco’s global trade compliance tools and
processes. She also plays a lead role in Cisco’s Diversity and Inclusion
initiative within the finance organization, and serves as co-lead of
Cisco’s employee resource organization for women. Jill earned her
B.A. in international commerce at the University of Minnesota. She is a
licensed U.S. customs broker, a member of the U.S. Council on International Business, and an active participant in trade associations in
Asia and Europe. Jill lives in Sacramento with her husband and three

Tani has more than 25 years’ experience delivering growth and performance to financial institutions and is currently executive vice president
and chief financial officer for Bank of Marin. As treasurer/EVP at Bank
of the West, she founded the Women’s Connection, a grass roots
organization supporting the personal and professional growth of
employees through coaching, education, and networking. Tani was a
founding manager of Charles Schwab Bank, has taught finance at the
college level, and has mentored many successful professionals. Tani
serves on the board of directors for Junior Achievement of Northern
California and volunteers in classrooms to bring financial literacy to
underserved K-12 school kids. She has an M.B.A. in finance from San
Francisco State University, a B.A. in international affairs from Lewis and
Clark College, and is married with two children.

Shirley has held numerous leadership positions at State Farm
Insurance during her career. She is currently responsible for Property and Casualty Underwriting Operations within the Western and

member of the California FAIR Plan, a board member of the United
Way of Kern County, and an Executive Advisory Council member of
Leadership California. She is a past chair of the United Way of the
Wine Country and a trustee of Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Shirley
earned a business degree from Hampton University, an M.B.A. from

As a global business executive for over 25 years, Titina is responsible
for the operational excellence of Oracle’s 28,000 global Alliance and

business with Oracle. A passionate advocate for mentorship, in 2005
she founded the Oracle Women’s Leadership (OWL) program, introducing an innovative approach for cultivating and retaining female
talent at Oracle. As a visionary in this field, she was recognized with
the 2008 Diamond Leadership Award, 2009 Pacesetter Award, 2013
YWCA TWIN (Tribute to Women of Influence) Award, 2013 Athena
Finalist Award, and 2014 Women of Achievement Award. She has

Gizelle has over 28 years of experience in information technology.
Currently, Gizelle is responsible for the Cost Basis and Portfolio Performance Platform applications and leads globally for development

partnership is to start young. She majored in industrial management
engineering and minored in chemical engineering. She believes it is

Deepti Srivastava

Technical Program Manager, Google
Deepti Srivastava is a technical program manager in the Storage
Infrastructure at Google. Srivastava’s team provides the data store
for many of Google’s products, such as Google+ and Google Maps.
Prior to that, she was at Oracle Corporation in the RAC Database
development team, creating scalable on-demand cloud computing
technologies. While at Oracle, Srivastava was also an enthusiastic
member of Oracle Women’s Leadership. Srivastava is a passionate
advocate of STEM education, especially for girls. She has served on
several panels across the San Francisco Bay Area as an expert on
women’s leadership and technology. Srivastava enjoys dancing and
has performed on stage as a member of a salsa troupe and a Bollywood dance troupe. She also enjoys snowboarding and all things
fashion.
Cady Wolf

Senior Vice President, Global Sales, Switchfly
A 20+ year veteran of the travel, eCommerce, and technology industries, Cady has spent her career working with marquee global travel
companies. She is currently senior vice president of Global Sales at
Switchfly and prior to that was vice president of Partner Marketing at
Travelocity. In addition to PBWC, she currently serves on the advisory board for California Polytechnic Institute and has had previous
advisory roles with Vail Resorts and Arizona State University. Cady
received a B.A. from Arizona State University, her masters from UNLV,
and executive certifications from UVA and SMU. Cady lives in Tiburon with her husband and three young sons. where they are avid
outdoor enthusiasts.

Kathryn brings more than 25 years of executive experience to PBWC
specializing in strategy, marketing and business development. She
joined PBWC in October of 2012. Prior to joining PBWC, Kathryn
served as senior vice president, Bank of America, where she led the
Western Region Global Wealth Management Insurance Division.
Kathryn has held various leadership roles at Wells Fargo, Prudential,
and Pacific Life. Kathryn serves on the board of Marin YMCA and on
the board and executive committee of North Bay Children’s Center.
Carolyn Pon
PBWC Community Director
As PBWC’s community director, Carolyn is one of the first points of
contact for PBWC sponsors and community members. She designs,
develops, and oversees community events, monthly webinars, and
eLearning programs. She manages the PBWC volunteer program
and is also responsible for the PBWC social media strategy and its
implementation. Carolyn is constantly on the lookout for talented
contributors! If you appear too passionate and have special skills
and experiences, she will attempt to recruit you for one of PBWC’s
