Before I met my fiance, I chalked the sport
of darts up to men throwing projectiles at
a board in some dimly lit pub in the countryside of England. It was a man’s game, a
British game, a drinking game, and a game
I wasn’t interested in. No one I knew ever
played darts, and I rarely went to bars/pubs.
However, this was all to change once he and
I met, and he moved out here from NY. He
is an active, though casual, dart player. He
has his own darts and dartboard. Naturally,
he wanted to find a local place to play darts.
Now that we have our local ‘Cheers’ type
pub - and yes, quite a few people know our
names - he can get his dart kick once a week.
Having actually watched people play
darts, and taking part myself on occasion,
I realize my concept of darts is quite antiquated. It isn’t just a game for old British men. It isn’t just throwing projectiles
at a board. There is a system. There are
rules. And there is a skill to the game,
though watching some people play (me,
for example), you might not think so.
While it isn’t my favourite cup of tea, I find
it fascinating to watch HOW people play.
The way they throw, how they yell when
they win and swear when they miss. I’ve
noticed it’s a very vocal game, especially
with a large group. It’s a social game, a
game where you can sip from your pint
between throws, so to speak. You can play
with a random stranger and find a common
interest. Thanks to DartsLive, it’s also a
creative game - there are even cutesy Japanese ‘mini game variants’ you can play,
which I admit appeals to the girl in me.
My appreciation for this noble sport has
grown, and soon enough I plan on having my own darts, complete with spar-
kling pink flights (which might make a
few men cringe!). I am not an avid player,
nor a very skilled one. Thanks to my fiance, however, I am more knowledgable, and I am quite content to sit and
watch him, and surrounding groups, play.
I am a happy spectator who finally (mostly) understands what she is spectating.

COMING TO A BAR NEAR YOU; WA
The Monstah Comes Back To Town!
By Chris Trinidad
Hey Everyone the 808 is coming back to Seattle, we had so
much fun last year we decided to come back for a vacay.
But that doesn’t mean we
won’t be out checking out local bars and hopefully meet
and greet more awesome
people than we the did last
time we were here for COD.
Right now we are scheduled
to land on 4/6 and heading to
Waynes World for our first stop
after checking in at our hotel it
may be late though around 11.
On Wednesday 4/8 we will be at
Ringers for their tourney where
we will have product for sale and
deliver those that pre ordered.
On Friday 4/10 we will be at R Bar
competing in their weekly tourney and will also be delivering
and have product to purchase.
Our last stop is scheduled
to be at All Seasons. Nothing is set yet but we are planning on showing our faces.
I will have friends coming with
me, not sure right now, but hopefully friends from Idaho as well!
I can not tell you how excited
I am to see all my friends I
have met over there as well as
meeting a lot of new people I
will be able to call my friends.
Counting down the days will be
hard but I can’t wait to see all of
you and having some fun down
there in the Pacific Northwest.
ALOHA,
Chris
Chris Trinidad hails from Hawaii and we welcome him as
family! See you soon Chris!

DARTS: THINGS YOU MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN
BY Aubrey Beaudin
Health Act, but it was more
about the local justices and
their authority. Liverpool and
Glasgow banned pub games
in general, reasoning drunkenness and ‘ne’er do wellism’.
The bans, of course, didn’t last.
5. ‘Alms for the Love of Arrow’! Before the creation of
the National Health Service
after WWII, British hospitals
needed financial support and
were mainly funded by philanthropists. There were so many
hospitals by the end of the 19th
century that they were basically competing for financial
aid. The London Fever Hospital Committee launched ‘The
£oyal Society of Dartsmen’ in
1938, cashing in on the current dart craze. Before closing down the society in 1940,
the £. S. D. had gathered over
£4,000 to British hospitals and
boasted over 110,000 members.
6. The dart board has a humble
origin. Imagine a local drinking establishment in ye olde
Merry England. Shortened arrows thrown into the bottom of
an empty wine barrel. The wine
barrel eventually evolved into
the cut end of a tree-trunk, and
the circular patterns of the rings
and cracking of wood became
the early concept of the modern
board, standardized in the late
1920s and called the ‘London’
board. The ‘London’ board was
not without stiff competition
before popularization, contending with several existing target
boards played in other localities. These were called ‘regional dartboards’, usually named
after the location of origin,
(Yorkshire, Manchester, etc).
And here are a few quickies:
-The best flights in the world
are made from turkey feathers.
-The average speed of
a dart hitting a board is
around
64kph
(40mph).
-In 1977, Muhammed Ali faced
the Welsh champ Alan Evans.
Ali won hitting a bullseye on the
way out, and proclaimed himself darts champion of the world.
-The Republic of Yemen is one
of the only countries to feature
darts on their stamps, issuing
them for the 1964 Olympics
in Tokyo (when darts were not
a recognised Olympic sport).

Here are some interesting factoids about the sport
of Darts that you may, or
may not have known. Enjoy!
1. Harrows, founded in 1973, is
the #1 darts brand in the world,
located in England. The company started when the popularity
in darts surged due to televising
the sport in the 70s. Dart World
is the exclusive American
distributor for this company.
2. DartsLive, the machines you
yourself probably use, was established in 2003 by Hitmaker
Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of the
SEGA corporation, and Medalist Marketing Corporation in a
joint venture. It was basically
a solution to free players from
the tedious manual process of
scoring, rating, and stat comparing. The first machine was
tested at Bee SHIBUYA, a darts
bar in Tokyo, Japan. Thanks for
making our lives a little easier!
3. Rumor has it that the Pilgrims played darts on the Mayflower, thus carrying the tradition to America. While this is
a good theory, it has yet to be
proven. Regardless, darts are
immensly popular in the US,
thanks or no thanks to them.
4. Banned! (But not forever!)
Darts were banned in the towns
of Huddersfield, and the cities of Liverpool, and Glasgow
in the 1930s. Huddersfield

SteelTip Sweetheart Shoot Results
WWW.THEMEDALLION.NET
A & L Sports Pub welcomed
the Portland Area Dart Association for their annual Sweetheart shoot, on Saturday, February 7th. Despite having a huge
flood while they were there, the
staff at A & L was accomodating and stayed open, mostly
for PADA. The first part of the
shoot, a very attentive waiter
took care of the group, but after

a while he had to go help with
the flood at hand. Everyone
had a great time despite the issues and PADA wants to thank
A & L for their hospitality.
There was a $360 total pot. $168
came from player entry fees. The
bar added an additional $120
and $72 was the PADA add.
There were 12 teams for
this mixed doubles tour-
nament. The event started Stephen Brown/Deidre Brown

One lucky Mama! Mr. Shooter has whisked Mama away for a fun filled week in Arizona, culminating with the Seahawks taking on
the Patriots in the SuperBowl. Enjoy this blast from the past, and she’ll dish on Marshawn and Richard next month! Go Hawks!
Hello
8
my readers. It is
good to be
back from
vacation.
The Superbowl was fun, even though my
team was not victorious. I’m positive we
will get them next year. And who can be upset with back to back appearances? I mean,
really, Seattleites waited for a very long
time for a championship team, and now we
have one. Hawks fan from the beginning,
Hawks fan til the end. Let’s get those contracts signed and look towards the future!
Now let’s talk about darts. What’s up? Well,
I hear there are a bunch of changes coming, and that’s going to be a good thing. I
am looking forward to the Zone Finals at
Little Creek. It’s a one-time thing, from
what I hear, but I think it will be great to
experience something different. Folks who
have been there in years past have said
without a doubt that it is a wonderful venue.
I know, I know, I hear the bitching about
it being Mother’s Day weekend too. Gripe
away folks. Personally, I am excited. My
kids will come down and while I’m shooting darts, the kid who is old enough will
cheer on Mama; the others will go out
and about – explore the beaches nearby
and have a blast. We will celebrate with a
lovely dinner at the ocean – which is just
a hop skip and jump away. I get the best of
both worlds. Of course, it works for me because I don’t have a Mama I have to worry
about making happy like some of you do.
I wonder if your Moms might be willing to celebrate early. Or a day late? Or?
As a parent myself, I love making my kids
happy. My married daughter has to divide
time between two of us. I’m not going to
get my nose out of joint because she can’t
be there on the third Sunday of May just
because Hallmark says THAT’S the day
to celebrate! Make the week before special for Mom, wife, and mom-in-law. Get
creative. And quit bitchin’ about the dates.
I am asking you all to NOT make this
weekend a bitch fest. Let those of us who
are moms and not upset have some fun.
You all have choices. Personally, I say
make it Mom’s Day every day and then
one Sunday in May won’t be a big deal.
Now – go do what your Momma says!

SIERRA’S STORY, ‘15
You may remember a few
months back, almost a year ago
actually, we ran a story about
a brave young woman who
wanted to share her story with
everyone in the hopes that she
may enlighten you with her experience. Sierra Daniels will be
having surgery the last part of
April as a result of the issues she
and her family have experiened
with breast cancer. This is her
story, with an update at the end
as well. Please make an effort to
go to the benefit for Sierra. It will
be held at The Cactus Moon Saloon Saturday, March 21st and
the proceeds will go to help her
in her recovery, and to help offset some of her medical expenses. Please see the ad on page 2
and support this beautiful young
lady. She works hard for you all
at Cactus Moon, and it’s time
for everyone to show some serious support. STORY PAGE 10

Sierra Daniels Story
Updated 2/2015
WWW.THEMEDALLION.NET
Breast cancer has affected
my life and family more than I
could have ever imagined.
About 3 years ago we found out
that my aunt on my mother’s
side had breast cancer. She went
through chemotherapy and radiation and is now in remission.
After a year of being in remission her doctor ran a gene test.
The test showed that she tested
positive for the BRCA2 gene
mutation. So far, every woman
on my mother’s side has tested
positive for the gene mutationincluding myself. The BRCA2
gene raises our chances of
getting breast or ovarian cancer
to about 70%. Both my mother
and my aunt have gotten a hysterectomy, double mastectomy
and reconstruction surgery.
Since I have tested positive
for the gene mutation, I have
started gathering the information I needed to decide if I
wanted to get these surgeries. I
found I am too young to have
a hysterectomy ( I’m 23), but
because the double mastectomy
and reconstruction surgery are
considered preventative my
doctor’s said I could have them
done. I met with the surgeon
and she ordered a breast MRI.
She wouldn’t refer me to a
plastic surgeon until I had the
MRI. My results from the MRI
showed 2 small lumps in my
left breast. I’m 23 years old so
this absolutely terrified me. I
kept thinking, “ What if I have
cancer? What’s going to happen? “ The next step was to
biopsy the lumps. At this point
my decision to get the surgeries
has been made. The anxi10 ety from waiting to hear if
these lumps were benign or
not was too much. The results came back and both
lumps turned out to be benign.
I’m still scheduled to get a
double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery this coming January and because these
are preventative, it drops my
chances of getting breast cancer from 70% to 20%. I’m very
thankful for the knowledge
having this gene mutation has
given me. Breast cancer doesn’t
only effect older women. I hope
my story helps other women my
age understand that it effects us
all and become more aware.
Get checked, take the steps to
ensure your long and happy
life. You’ll be glad you did, one
way or the other. Take the time
to take care of yourself, take
preventative steps and always
keep a positive attitude about
life. Life is tough enough.
You’re
worth
it!
You
know
you
are.
SIERRA’S UPDATE
A year and a half ago I tested
positive for the BRCA2 gene
mutation. The mutation raises
my chances of getting breast
cancer from 20% to 80-85% in
my lifetime. In the past 8 monthes I’ve had 2 MRIs, 1 mammogram and 2 biopsies. They
have found a total of 4 masses,
1 being a benign tumor. I’ve
had one scare where one of
the masses looked more cancerous then benign. Since the
masses are showing up so rapidly I’ve been told that there is
an 80% chance that cancer will
show up by the time I’m 30.
At 24, this was terrifying. In
Brandon and Sierra at Cactus Moon Saloon. Won’t You Join Them?
March I’m going through with
my decision to have a double
mastectomy and reconstruction
surgery. I will be out of work
6 to 8 weeks at a minimum.
With that being said, we at The
Medallion Dart News would
like to wish Sierra the best possible outcome and thank you on
behalf of all women, and men
for that matter, who have been
touched by cancer. Breast cancer affects both men and women
and it’s serious business. Please
get checked regularly and do
self exams monthly. We encourage you to reach out to Sierra
and let her know you care by
supporting her benefit. The information is in the ad above, on
page 2 for Cactus Moon Saloon.
Thank you for sharing your
story Sierra. I’m sure it took a
lot of courage to go public with
this very personal story. We applaud you for your decision to
go through with the surgery given all of the circumstances surrounding your family and yourself. There will be a dart shoot
in her honor and to her benefit,
as we’ve repeated several times.
They will also have a raffle with
lots of different prizes and great
food and drink specials. Thank
you to Cactus Moon as well, for
taking care of your own and being there for Sierra. With all this
amazing support, I’m sure we
can expect to see her tending bar,
and serving up food and drinks
again in the very near future.

divet”, others are smooth, and
some are a combination of
ribbed and smooth. Test them
all. What feels right to you? I
prefer a divet because then I
don’t have to think about where
I am putting my finger – it’s the
same every time, right in the
divet – do what works best for
you. Again, this requires a lot of
testing different kinds of darts.
Flights: Flights have so many
different shapes; it’s hard to
know which one is best. Do NOT
go by looks! Did you know that
a flight with a dimpled surface
will slow down and stabilize
a dart. That might be good for
someone who throws hard, but
finds the dart wobbly in the air.
Tips: Some people like the really long tips, some like them
medium length and many prefer the short tips. There are
also different grades of plastic
used. Try them out. Test them
with your barrels and your
flights until you get the configuration that feels best for you.
One more tip. If you think that
your stance or throw needs
some adjusting, ask someone
who is higher rated. Explain
what you are thinking, ask
them to watch and give you critique. Most of the “big dogs”
are happy to help you out, as
long as it is not during a match.

Choosing
your
darts
So, you have decided you like
darts and you have a starter set
that are decent. But you have
a feeling you may need to upgrade or change flight shapes,
or the barrel doesn’t feel quite
right. What should you do?
Here are a few tips
from those in the know!
Barrels: First, do NOT try to
buy barrels for your darts off
the internet unless you have
thrown them at a dart board
first. The balance of the darts is
very important. Go to a place
that will let you throw darts at a
real board so you can feel them.
How does it feel to throw that
dart? Is it too heavy? Too light?
Keep trying them out. I used to
think I needed a 20 gram dart.
It turns out that the 18.5 was
much better for me, as long as
it was well balanced. Test Test
Test until it feels just right.
Most of the darts out there right
now are Tungsten. You can get
them in Nickel or Silver, but
if you are new and your darts
hit the board sideways or the
floor very often, those softer
metals are going to get dinged
up and won’t throw as nicely.
Tungsten is super durable and
won’t break or bend easily.
Dart barrels have different
grips. Some have a “finger

Meet Clint Westmoreland,And His Adorable Son Gabriel! Welcome Clint!
morial, and Women’s Cups
We hope that this will make
things run smoothly, as well
as give representation to both
DartsLive and Medalist bars.
If you have been contacted by
these cup coordinators, please
respond quickly to them regarding dates. We have had a
short hiatus from many cups
and need to get back on track.
VERY
IMPORTANT:
*If you coordinate darts out of
your bar and you are up for a
Challenge Cup, PLEASE do
NOT contact the other bar;
contact the coordinator in
charge of the cup. It gets very
confusing if multiple people
are trying to contact the bars
coordinators. Clint and Mary
need to be able to keep track
of the Cups and who wins
them to keep the process going.
*If there is no official coordinator for your cup, the $40
goes into the board. An offi-
cial coordinator is as follows:
1) Must be completely neutral running the
cup (can be from either
bar but cannot show bias)
2) Must write an article of approximately 500 words and
include a photo (no camera phones please) the article
must be submitted to the editors of the Medallion as soon
as possible after the cup.
Within 72 hours is preferable.
3) Coordinator must call either Clint or Mary to report
the winners of the Cup as soon
as possible. (Texting is fine)
Coordinators can be reached
via phone calls, texting or email
