Winter/Spring 2015
Dear Open House Registrant:
We have received your reservation for our Accepted Student Open House on Saturday, April 4, 2015 and
are looking forward to having you on campus. The enclosed schedule outlines the activities we have
planned for your visit.
Enclosed you will find a campus map, a visitor parking permit, and directions to RIT. When you arrive on
campus, please follow the signs to parking lots D or E, and display your parking permit on the dashboard of
your vehicle. Once you park your vehicle, please follow the signs to the lobby of the Gordon Field House
(GOR on the enclosed map) where our staff and students will be available to greet you and help you plan
your day. Coffee and continental breakfast will be served following Check-In and the Opening Session
will begin at 9:00 a.m.
Each College will provide a light or discounted lunch after the formal academic meetings. However, if you
would like to have lunch in our student cafeteria, Gracie’s, you are welcome to do so. Lunch passes for
Gracie’s can be purchased during Check-In or at the door for $8.50 per person.
A group session regarding financial aid will be held in the afternoon. This session is designed to answer
the most frequently asked questions at this point in a student’s college selection process. We have
enclosed an overview of the most popular questions we receive. If you have questions that we haven’t
answered in our written materials, you are welcome to contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships
now.
Since all of our Accepted Student Open House events are optional, we recommend reviewing the enclosed
schedule before you arrive. Please contact us in the Admissions Office if you have questions, or if we can
assist you with planning your visit. We look forward to having you on campus, and congratulations on
your acceptance to RIT!
Sincerely,
Daniel R. Shelley, Ph.D.
Assistant Vice President and
Director of Undergraduate Admissions

Do You Have Financial Aid and
Scholarship Questions?
Many of the frequently asked questions we receive from families are addressed below. Every student
has a financial aid counselor, who will be happy to answer any questions we have not answered either
here or in the materials that accompany financial aid award notifications.
Q: Once I receive my financial aid award notification, what should I do next?
A: Review the award and the materials enclosed with your award. If you want to accept all awards
listed, you (the student) should sign the award letter and return it to the address at the top of the award letter. You
may also accept, decline, or reduce your awards using Financial Aid Self-Service.
Check Financial Aid Self-Service to read detailed explanations of each type of aid offered, and then check
for and complete any missing or incomplete documents. You can also calculate your anticipated cost of
attendance and grant access to a parent or other third party, so that they can also view your financial aid award.
Q: How does the Federal Work-Study Program Work?
A: Review your fall class schedule to determine your availability outside of class/lab time for a part-time
job. Positions for the Fall 2015 semester will be posted closer to the start of the semester, and are posted through
the Student Employment Office (SEO) Website at www.rit.edu/seo. RIT does not assign or guarantee a part-time
job, but the SEO will help facilitate the job search process. Students are paid bi-weekly through a payroll check
and your earnings can be used for personal expenses throughout the year.
Q: How do I pay for the remaining balance?
A: There are several financing options available. First, review the payment options available through
Student Financial Services. They can be found at www.rit.edu/fa/sfs/
The federal PLUS loan is a loan that the parent borrows on the student’s behalf. Additional information
about the PLUS loan can be found on the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships web site and in the materials
enclosed with your award letter. To begin the 2015-2016 PLUS loan application process, complete both the
Parent PLUS Loan application and the separate Promissory Note online after April 1st at www.studentloans.gov.
As a Parent Borrower, you (the parent) will use your Federal Student Aid PIN as your electronic signature for
both the application and the promissory note.
Alternative (or non-Federal) loans are private loans in the student’s name with a co-signer. We encourage
students and families to use alternative loans as a last option after first pursuing all federal loan options.
Alternative loans may have variable interest rates and interest begins accruing once the loan is disbursed. Actual
repayment on the loans usually begins 6 months after the student is no longer enrolled. Students may use any
lender they choose for an alternative loan. Advice on how to evaluate alternative loans can be found at
www.rit.edu/emcs/financialaid/responsible_borrowing.html.
Information accurate as of January 2015
1
Q: My financial situation has changed. What should I do?
A: You should submit a letter to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships describing the change. We
will review the new information and recalculate your financial aid eligibility. You should also provide
documentation of the change (e.g. termination letter, copies of medical bills) as well as specific dollar amounts
(e.g. amount paid out in medical/dental expenses, projected amount of decrease in annual income). A change in a
family’s financial situation can be reviewed any time during the academic year. Please note that we must receive
this information in writing in order to properly document a change in your financial situation.
Q: Can you explain the loans on the Award Letter?
A: There are full descriptions of the loans in the Understanding Your Undergraduate Financial Aid
Award booklet. Here is a brief overview:
Subsidized Direct Loan: This is a federal loan and the student is the borrower. The government pays the interest
while the student is in school. Repayment begins 6 months after the student leaves school or ceases to be
enrolled at least half-time. The federal government assesses an origination fee.
Unsubsidized Direct Loan: This is a federal loan and the student is the borrower. The interest begins accruing
while the student is in school. Students will have the option to pay the interest while in school or to defer both
interest and principle payments until 6 months after they drop below half-time enrollment (capitalize the
interest). The federal government assesses an origination fee.
Perkins Loan: This is a federal loan and the student is the borrower. The government pays the interest while the
student is in school and through the grace period. Repayment begins 9 months after the student leaves school.
Perkins loans are awarded only to students who have significant financial need remaining after all other
federal, state and RIT funding has been offered.
Q: Are there any other scholarships that I can apply for through RIT?
A: We encourage students to seek out additional scholarships. Our website www.rit.edu/financialaid
provides links to many free, reputable scholarship search engines. Please let the Office of Financial Aid &
Scholarships know if you have obtained additional scholarships so we may reflect it accurately on your Award
Letter.
Q: Will my aid change if I live at home instead of RIT housing?
A: Your award(s) may be adjusted if you live at home and are not charged for housing and meals by RIT.
Please contact our office if you would like to have your award recalculated because of your change in housing
status.
Q: I have read all of the materials and I still have questions. Should I wait until I’m at the Open
House to ask those questions?
A: No! Take care of your questions now so you have more time to explore RIT during Open House.
Every student has a financial aid counselor who is happy to answer any questions we have not answered in our
written materials. Financial aid counselors are listed on our web page, along with their email addresses.
