The Kaplan Turbine
The Kaplan turbine was invented in the Czech Republic in 1912 by Viktor Kaplan. Over the past 100 years, the design has improved
significantly and a number of Kaplan turbine variations have evolved. MAVEL’s Kaplan turbines include approximately 100 proprietary
standard designs and include “S”, Bulb, PIT “Z” models with both vertical and horizontal configurations.
This Kaplan range generally targets sites between 100 kW and 20 MW and turbines are available with runner diameters from 550 mm
to 5500 mm, utilize three to six runner blades and can be single or double regulated. They are ideal for run-of-the-river sites with low
heads ranging from 1.5 to 35 meters and optimal flows per turbine between 0.9 and 100 m3/s.
The majority of the turbines MAVEL has installed since founding have been Kaplan turbines. With orders for over 245 Kaplan turbines,
installations include the 18.87 MW Grodno project in Belarus, the 700 kW Boatlock project in Massachusetts and over twenty-two
projects (42 turbines) in Poland. This experience has made MAVEL one of the leading global experts in low-head hydroelectric power
installations.
