POP-UP HOSPICE SHOP OPENING IN TAKARO
Savvy second-hand shoppers will be given a new opportunity to grab a bargain from next
week as Arohanui Hospice is set to open a pop-up shop in Takaro, Palmerston North.
Arohanui Hospice’s seventh shop will be based at 123A Botanical Road, next to Adams
Pharmacy, on the corner of Botanical Road and Featherston Street, with initial plans to open
for three months.
The official opening will take place on Monday 9th March at 10am with the majority of goods
being sold at just two dollars as well as a bargain table where shoppers can fill a bag for two
dollars.
“The community has been so generous with their donations that our current shops are
running out of space to display it all. We have been given the opportunity to open this popup shop and we couldn’t say no,” said Louise Curtis, Director of Strategy and Operations.
“We also want to support a new area of Palmerston North. This will be our third shop in
Palmerston North and our seventh shop across the region but the first time that we will
have a shop west of the city centre. We hope that this new shop will help us to sell these
goods, while supporting the local community and increasing our visibility in this
neighbourhood.”
Staff at the Arohanui Hospice pop-up shop are hoping that the initial opening will be a huge
success and that the shop may become more of a permanent fixture.
The opening hours will be 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday with stock to include clothing,
shoes and books.
Arohanui Hospice’s current shops, which are based in Palmerston North (Roslyn and
Rangitikei Street), Feilding, Levin, Otaki and Taihape, are well-supported by local residents
and help to contribute to the shortfall of funding needed by the hospice to provide care. In
2014/15 the hospice needs to raise $2.3m to subsidise its core operating costs.

Since 1991 Arohanui Hospice in Palmerston North has been providing specialist palliative
care for people with a life-limiting illness in the Manawatu, Tararua, Horowhenua and
Rangitikei regions.
Care provided by Arohanui Hospice enables patients to achieve the best possible quality
of life, and provides support to their families.
Hospice care is holistic, encompassing the physical, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural
needs of the patient and their family.
Care is free of charge and provided wherever people need it - at the hospice inpatient
unit, at home or an alternative comfortable environment.
The services provided include support of the patient in the community, inpatient care,
respite care, 24-hour advice, outpatient clinics, day procedures, an activities-based day
programme, social work services, family support, pastoral and bereavement support.
The majority of patients cared for each year by Arohanui Hospice have cancer. However,
we also care for people with non-malignant conditions such as motor neurone disease,
respiratory disease and heart disease.
Arohanui Hospice is only partly funded by the government and each year needs to make
up the shortfall in funding. In the 2014-2015 financial year the hospice needs to raise
$2.3 million from the community.
