Spring is just around the corner. I can hardly wait. The days are definitely getting brighter and the sun is helping to make everything warmer. I can’t complain about our winter though because it hasn’t been too bad this year. I would like to give a very special welcome to all of our new residents to Queensland. We are very pleased to have you here. I met some of you during our 40th Community Anniversary Open House held last September. If you have recently just moved here then please stop in and introduce yourself to Mrs. Brown, our office manager. Speaking of spring time, if you are interested in preparing for your flower and vegetable gardens etc.; check out the Queensland Garden Club. They meet the first Wednesday night of every month from 7 to 9 p.m. They have a membership fee of $10.00 for the year. They do a wonderful job of planting and taking care of the flower beds in front of the community center every year. I remember how bare the front of the community center used to be before they created this colour flower garden. If you would like to help with that, please let them know. In April they will be having a special speaker by the name of Lynden Penner, author of The Chinook Short Season Yard, Quick and Beautiful in the Calgary Region. Also this speaker is a landscaper designer, horticultural and gardening columnist on the CBC Radio in Alberta and Saskatchewan. There will be an admission charge of $5.00 for this event only. Sounds like a great person to come and listen to, especially if you aren’t too sure about what flowers to grow in Calgary. I will definitely be there. Trico Centre for Family Wellness In May, they will be having their Plant Share and Sale. Do come and check this club out even if you don’t have many gardening skills. It is a wonderful place to learn. This club is GREAT and you will meet some fabulous creative neighbours. 11150 Bonaventure Drive SE 403-278-7542 | www.tricocentre.ca The Girl Guides will be having a Carnival on the 21rst of March and it is open to all so come and have a lot of fun. From swimming to skating, personal training to wellness workshops, Bone Builders to Bender Ball Fitness – we are committed to providing a range of quality programs and services that make active living fun, affordable, and for everyone. We make it easy to find your perfect fit. There will not be a preteen dance in the month of March. There was an awesome one in February for Valentine’s Day. Boy, the kids really do enjoy this. Thanks Nicki for all of your hard work. You make this so special and lots of fun for all. They are always looking for chaperones if you would like to volunteer to help. Have you met Peter DeMong, our Councillor? We will be hosting a session called Aldertalk with Mr. DeMong on April 11, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at our community center. He is a great listener and is ready to hear any concerns you have regarding our area or the city in general. We do not have a spring cleanup date as yet for our community but I will keep you informed as soon as I find out. Spring into something new at Trico Centre. 6 Well that is all for this month. Have a great one. They are the actions we take to build healthy relationships and healthy family members. Whether you are a child, teen, or parenting adult, everyone in the family plays a role in building these assets. Here are some ideas for how you can build assets at home. Here are some ways you can build these assets in your family. • Make family meals a priority. Figure out together how often you eat together and what makes meals enjoyable for everyone and then make a plan for your family meals. Be creative! Take turns picking out the menu, try new recipes, or set a theme for the meal conversation like “favorite movies that include food”. If you can’t eat dinner together, try eating breakfast or lunch. • Plan regular family fun nights. Brainstorm the kinds of things you like to do together and that fit your budget. Some families go out to dinner together. Others play board games at home. Some may take a walk or a hike. Find something that works (and is fun) for your family. • Be intentional about maintaining meaningful traditions in your family. These may include how you celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones in life. For some families, these may include religious or spiritual traditions, such as worship, prayer, sacred readings, or music. Whatever the specific tradition, tell stories about its importance, history, and meaning—both across generations and for each member of your family. Bring your super soaker and pool toys for an evening School patrol crossings are located at busy intersections near schools where students help other students cross the street safely. School patrollers are 11 and 12-year-old students who have volunteered to stand guard in all kinds of weather to help students cross safely. Pylons are set out on either side of the crossing to alert drivers that there will be patrollers at the intersection before school and after school. When there are students waiting to cross, the patrollers watch for a break in traffic to blow their whistles and put out their stop signs. For safety reasons, the patrollers step to the corner and put out their stop signs and do not walk onto the street. At this time, cars must stop at least 5 meters from the intersection. The patrollers instruct the students across. When all students have safely crossed to the other side, the patrollers will step back from the corner with their signs behind their backs. Cars may then proceed with caution. If you are a pedestrian, we ask you to please cross with the safety patrols. We understand that extra time is needed to drive in school zones so if these areas are near where you drive, please plan extra time to ensure our students are safe. of fun, music and some unforgettable memories! While I support this, I believe the MLA salary should be reduced by 8 percent. Effective February 1st, Premier’s salary will decrease by $10,887.50 from $217,750 to $206.862.50 while Speaker Gene Zwozdesky and cabinet ministers’ salaries will all decrease by $10,050 from $201,000 to $190,950. While I am pleased by any cuts to MLA pay, the Premier should have rolled back ministerial compensation by 30 per cent and MLA base pay by 8 percent in order to reverse the extra $11,000 in RRSP contributions equivalent to an 8% pay increase that the PCs voted themselves in 2012. What he’s done is merely “window dressing”. If our plan were implemented, taxpayers would save around $1.4 million and Albertans would see real leadership. Budget and Taxes It’s no secret that the drop in oil prices is going to mean some tough decisions are going to have to be made as the government prepares its 2015 budget. Some of the ideas being considered include increasing or creating new taxes. Whether it’s income tax hikes, a PST, or increased gas taxes, I’ve made it clear that I personally, oppose those measures. The government should look at getting its spending in order before asking Albertans to pay more. Online Camping Reservations To help visitors connect with the summer camping season sooner, the Reserve.AlbertaParks.ca online campsite reservation system has launched to accommodate pre-booking of campsites. Return to the Legislature The spring sessional calendar has been released and we now know that the legislature will resume sitting on March 10. I am eagerly anticipating whatever legislation the government may bring forward. The 2015 Budget is expected to be introduced sometime before the end of March. I will be sure to keep you informed on what that budget means for the constituents of Calgary-Fish Creek. Important Information from Enmax Enmax has advised a phone scam is occurring in Alberta. MARCH 2015 I Great News Publishing I Call 403-263-3044 for advertising opportunities Hello Ward 14! We’re nearing the end of winter, and there are already two Aldertalk sessions behind us. If you want to talk about one (or more) municipal subjects, join me at the Mid-Sun Community Centre on March 14, from noon to 2 p.m. If you can’t make it in March but still want to join, then visit www.calgary.ca/ aldertalk for upcoming dates. Many interesting topics come up at Aldertalk; topics like street lights. That topic came up at the January Aldertalk, and there are some big changes coming in the near future. I am very happy to be moving these changes forward. Council has approved city-wide retrofitting of street lights. The southeast of the city is scheduled for a complete retrofit in 2016. The street lights will be converted to take LED bulbs. They will save money, and save the environment. Over the 2015-2018 timeframe the City will replace about 90,000 streetlights with LED fixtures, and although the estimated $32 million initial cost might seem large, the financial benefit to the City is well worth it in the long term. LED lights use less electricity for a similar quality of lighting, and need to be replaced less often. LED lights are directional, so they waste less light. This results in better energy conservation, efficiency, and less light pollution in the night sky. LED lights will reduce the City’s operating costs by $50 million over ten years—a cost recovery period of only six years. any extra waste that won’t fit in your black bin, you shouldn’t expect the same for the recyclables you put in your blue bin. This is because the City’s Waste and Recycling department won the contract to provide the blue cart service through a bid on a contract that stipulates cart collection only. There was no bid, or contract for black cart collection. You can always bring your extra recyclables to community recycling depots across the city, or store it to be collected later, and of course any material intended for the black cart can be left out for regular pick up. Just make sure that the waste is in a bag that is easily lifted with one arm, and is about one to two feet from the cart. I am always interested in having a conversation about whatever colour cart, or variety of topic that you wish to discuss. Feel free to contact me anytime! Also, don’t forget that I send email reminders for Aldertalk, and other important happenings in Ward 14, but I need your consent to send them. You can state your consent via an email to [email protected]. One third of the food that we eat is directly or indirectly the result of pollination. Many native bees and insects pollinate our plants. However, one of the most efficient pollinators is the native mason bee which is the size of a house fly. They fly during cool moist weather and pollinate up to 1,800-2,000 flowers in a day, whereas honey bees like warmth and only pollinate approximately 200 flowers daily. Mason bees or Blue Orchard bees (Osmia lignaria) are non-aggressive because they do not need to protect their hive. They are referred to as solitary, but they are also gregarious because they nest in groups. Bee houses made of seasoned, untreated wood are shaped like a house with an open side and an overhang for shelter. They are attached to a fence facing in a south easterly direction that is warmed by the morning sun. Cardboard “straws” each with one end closed or wooden interlocking trays 15cm (6“) long with 7.5cm (5/16”) diameter holes are placed in the bee house as spring blossoms become available. The overwintered bee cocoons are removed from their fridge and placed in a box with a 7.5mm (5/16”) exit hole near the bee house. The males emerge first and wait for the females to follow, mate with them and die. Mason bees use mud to divide their egg compartments from each other. To provide mud a deep hole with a moist clay-type organic soil is placed near the bee house. The soil particles should be light enough for the female to pick them up and carry them back to her hole. The soil must be kept moist. No moist mud - No eggs! The bees will leave. 20 The bee may pick up pollen mites as well as chalk brood - a kind of fungus - when it reaches into the flowers and carries them back to its hole. These mites and fungus compete with the larvae for nourishment and may kill the developing bee. Mason bees cannot withstand Alberta’s fluctuating weather and are harvested in the fall. The cardboard straws are unfurled after being soaked in water. The waterproof cocoons are eased out by hand into a bowl of water. The cocoons in the wooden interlocking nesting trays are removed by pushing them out with the eraser end of a pencil. The remains of the mud and dry feces are rinsed off. The cocoons are completely dried on paper towels before being placed in open Ziploc bags. A glass of water placed next to the cocoons provides moisture in the fridge. Moisture and air circulation and a steady temperature are therefore maintained. The interlocking wooden trays are scrubbed and washed in a 10% bleach solution, allowed to dry completely and strapped together to avoid warping. In spring the cocoons are put outside when there are flowers and temperatures have reached a consistent 12-15 C. Non-hybridised flowers, such as leopards bane, scillas, crocuses, violets, dandelions and fruit blossoms attract these bees. p Peo h le w ep like a baby usually don’t h they sle ave on e. o sa y MARCH 2015 I Great News Publishing I Call 403-263-3044 for advertising opportunities – L eo J. In the 1960s coin collecting became a craze with all manner of people getting into the hobby with absurd profits being made. The silver crash of 1970 brought this to an abrupt end and many were left with large losses. Since then the value of coins and other quality numismatic items have kept pace with inflation.
