SUPERINTENDENT
Dear Community,
It has been a rough winter in
many ways – the frigid temperatures, the record snowfalls, illnesses, heating issues, etc. – and I have been
impressed by the many people who come to work every
day cheerful and optimistic,
who look forward to seeing
and working with your children no matter what the
obstacles may be. We have
a fantastic dedicated faculty and staff! I invite you to
send them a note or email of
encouragement and thanks
this month and let them
know how they have helped
or inspired your child(ren)
this winter.
Although we have no idea
what our state aid will be
next year due to the political games being played in
Albany at this time, we are
moving ahead with budget
planning for the 2015-16
school year by taking a very
conservative approach. If
you are unable to attend the
Board of Education meetings, you can still see the
budget presentations on our
website. There is a quick link

This March, come sing and
dance on the rooftops of
London alongside the cast
of “Mary Poppins”. Disney’s
favorite chimney sweep,
Bert (Jeffrey Allen) introduces us to 1910 England
and the troubled Banks
family. Jane and Michael
Banks (Savanna Scott/Patrick Banfield) have tormented the
housekeepers (Zozha TenWolde/Jake Brown), ridiculed the
local bird enthusiast (Katherine Heath), and sent many a
nanny packing before the practically perfect Mary Poppins
(Nicole Moravec) drops in for a jolly holiday with the fine
people of Cherry Tree Lane. Her arrival causes some distress
for Mr. and Mrs Banks (Bailey Olmstead/Melissa Naylor), but
a showdown with rival nanny, Miss Andrew (Marissa FargnoliPeterson), and a spoonful of sugar results in a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious evening of theatre where anything can
happen. Based on the book by P.L. Travers and the classic
Walt Disney film, “Mary Poppins” is sure to delight children
of all ages. At about 100 strong, the cast, crew, pit orchestra, and production team are excited to share this magical
tale with the Newfield community. So, grab your umbrella,
catch the wind from the east and fly to the Vincent Aiosa
Auditorium (Newfield High School) on the following dates

NEWFIELD COMMUNITY GARDEN EARTH DAY
VOLUNTEER DAY!
In celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day this year, the Newfield Community Garden Project and the Newfield Athletic
Department are planning a volunteer work day at the school
on Saturday, April 25th. Activities will include:

Preparing the new swimming pool garden for
planting
Planting fruit trees
Sheet mulching
Expanding the garden in the high school courtyard
and preparing it for planting
General campus clean-up
We are very excited about this opportunity to bring the Newfield community together for a great cause! We are currently looking for volunteers who would be willing to help.
The event will take place from 10am to 5pm and lunch will
be provided to all volunteers. If you would like to take part
in this event please contact Andrew Battles or Jeff Augustine
using the contact information below. If you are not available
for the entire day, please specify what time slot would work
for you.
In addition to volunteers to work, we are in need of donated
materials as well. If you cannot come and join us in person,
consider lending us some tools or other gardening materials
to help facilitate this event. We are working on finalizing a
more definite list of materials, but generally we will need:

There are so many great
things happening in Newfield. Here are just a few
examples: We continue to
refine our implementation of
the Common Core Learning
Standards and are seeing
students achieve far more
than they have in the past.
Conversations are occurring
among the administrative
team about how we can offer
more challenging, enriching
coursework to better prepare
our students for college and/
or a career. The high school
aesthetics committee and
art club have begun work on
3-D wall art using recycled
materials. Students are using technology to practice
reading and math fluency at
the elementary level and to
create music, for mechanical design, and for research
at the secondary levels. A
Facilities Committee is looking at options for sustainable
energy that will include our
heating/cooling system and
energy efficiencies. Workshops for parents have been
offered and will continue to
be offered throughout the
year. Topics have included
parenting skills and special
education issues.

two seats up for election this
spring. The incumbents are
Sylvia Allinger and Missy Rynone. Petitions are available
in the District Office and must
be submitted by 5:00 p.m.
on April 20th. Please contact

with any questions.
Community members are
invited to attend Board
meetings, usually held at
6:30 p.m. on the first and
third Thursdays of each
month. Upcoming topics of
interest include discussion of
the 2015-16 budget. Most
meetings include a Privilege

TEACHER OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to Mrs. Barbara Peck for being selected
as teacher of the month! Mrs. Peck is an exemplary master
teacher who is invested in her team and in her students.
She has embraced the Common Core Learning Standards
and is using them to help all students succeed. Mrs. Peck
leads students to discovery rather than simply giving out
answers. She believes every student can do it and makes
learning fun.

Crystal Clark! Her positive attitude helps start
and end our students’
days. She always shares
a smile, a kind word and
good news.
Crystal has been a member of our Newfield school
community for ten years.
She enjoys making music
and helping others. She’s
even been able to help children in other countries through
her church work building orphanages in Uganda and Mexico.

kids, coaches, and volunteers, who made such a successful season of winter activities!
Newfield Recreation has a full schedule of Spring youth
sports on tap for 2015. Baseball, softball, T-ball, track and
volleyball will be offered with registrations beginning midMarch. Youth, ages pre-k to 6th grade may sign up and, as
always, coaches and volunteers are needed and welcomed.
Details on all these programs and registration dates will be
sent home at the beginning of March and available online at
the Town’s website: www.newfieldny.org Adult programs
continue at their regular schedules and sites.
Summer Camp 2015 plans are being finalized at this writing. This year’s camp will be held from June 29 – August 7,
in the elementary school. Information for parents will be
going home from school at the beginning of March and also
available at that time at the Public Library, Town Hall, and
online at the website above. The camp will have a capacity
limit of 75 children on a “first come, first served” basis, with
first preference to Newfield Residents. Deposit will be due
May 15th and final payments must be in by June 15. Please
contact the Department for information concerning support
from Social Services and/or camp scholarships.
