Sowing Eternity for But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, . . . 1 Peter 3:15 PARK PLAZA CHURCH OF CHRIST March 8th, 2015 HAVE A HEART TO THE CHURCH AT PARK PLAZA Our belief that Christ is Lord places us at odds with much of the world around us. Lost, disillusioned and afraid, it must be incredibly hard for the unchurched to understand our faith in a Creator, let alone a Creator’s Son, sent to die the death of the worst criminal. No wonder they quiz us and expect straight, solid answers. Yet the Holy Spirit, through Peter, challenges us to always be prepared for such questions, always ready to give a reason for our belief. Isn’t that what Sowing for Eternity is all about? The money we donate places people in positions where they can effectively share that answer. As we enter another SFE season, please know how proud we are of you for the generous ways you invest your time, treasures and talents in reaching others for Christ. From the jungles of Honduras to the streets of Portland, your SFE donations continue to impact the lives of people all over the world, desperately in need of a Savior. Sowing for Eternity remains as exciting today as it has since God first challenged us with it ten years ago. It is available to each of us no matter our financial position, stage of life, or personal responsibilities. Like the widow’s mite, the size of the gift is judged only by the size of the heart. Giving to SFE is a blessing to everyone it touches, and as we all write those checks or fill out our pledges, it promises to be a blessing to us as well. May God always prepare us with the answers, The elders of Park Plaza Church of Christ Through the years, we’ve all completed a lot of questionnaires about ourselves and provided entire medical histories to our doctors. Many people have gone through a multitude of tests like: Electrocardiogram (ECG), Echocardiogram, Cardiac computerized tomography (CT) scan, Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Once the testing is complete, you receive the call from your Doctor. Your test results are back and can you come in to see him tomorrow morning? After reviewing the tests, our Doctors sometimes tell us that we will need to go on a special diet if we want to have a healthy heart. So what do we do? Laugh in his face and say, “Arrgh, Doctor. I ain’t going on no diet.” Of course not! No matter how bland a diet he chooses for us, we adhere to it because we want to have a healthy heart. So it is with your spiritual heart. We are given information to achieve a healthy spiritual heart every week in the form of Mitch’s sermons, songs, prayers, scripture readings and Bible Classes. So, is our attitude, “Arggh, Brother. I don’t need no help with my spiritual heart!” No, of course not! We know that we ALL fall short in God’s eyes and if we want a healthy spiritual heart, then we must do whatever it takes to get one and we should always be prepared to explain to others about our heart condition for Jesus. This year’s theme is taken from 1 Peter 3:15 “But in your hearts, revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason.” Sowing for Eternity is a way to become involved in missions at Park Plaza. It is a way of sharing your spiritual heart with those of the world. Each year the Park Plaza family provides funding for not only foreign missions, but also local missions through the one time giving of Sowing for Eternity. The Hearts of many of our Park Plaza members have been turned to missions. Works of the heart such as the Deaf Ministry, Hispanic Ministry and the Prison Ministry are provided funding through Sowing for Eternity. Through your heartfelt participation you are also supporting church plants in Portland, OR and Holly Grove near New Orleans. Through Park Plaza members, God’s hands reach out to the hearts in Brazil, Honduras, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Panama, Guyana, and South Africa. When I mention God’s hands, He had 286 pairs of hands bringing life into the hearts of those who have lost heart! Of those we had 65 pairs of hands that went on two or more mission trips searching for more hearts. Heart procedures are not cheap but they are important. The cost of the heart procedures for Park Plaza in 2015 will amount to $725,000. It is because of God’s blessings that we open our hearts to let the world see Jesus living there. It is because of God’s blessings that we open our hearts to the opportunities that God will give to us to give His peace and love to those without hope. Have a Heart for Sowing for Eternity. Its success depends on your prayers, your participation and your generous gifts. – Tom Walden 2 Park Plaza Church of Christ 2015 Sowing for Eternity 3 STRAIGHT TO THE HEART CLOGGED ARTERIES Arteries carry oxygenated blood to our organs and throughout our bodies. We see it advertised on TV all of the time. If your arteries are clogged, take this medicine to get the blood flowing again. The medicine removes the obstacles in your arteries so the blood can course through your body unobstructed. When we add Jesus to our life, then he flows in our arteries. Brett and Heather Worsham have done a great job organizing six weeks of service projects in partnership with many schools and non-profits. Last week we helped lead a project at Harrison Park Elementary School in Portland where we created a space for a community garden and neighborhood center. This will eventually become a space for community members to plant vegetables and host events. We worked with a group from Park Plaza Church of Christ in Tulsa. We beautified the school’s parking lot by pulling weeds, knocking down tall grass and edging around the lawn. This was a great way to tell the school how much we appreciate their role in the community. ARI CALE PERU MEDICAL CLINIC Overall, my heart is content and I know why God has called me here. Although superficially Peru seems to have lots of medical resources and everyone “knows” God, it’s now very apparent to me how much of an illusion those are. Everyone says they believe in God and they believe that they obey everything God says. The trigger of their headache or stomach pain is because they are getting very upset/angry, anxious and worrying. I ask them what does God say about becoming very angry/upset? They usually give me a blank stare. I now realize that they all say they “believe” in God, but few know what He says and fewer really serve Him. Like all Christians, I share my faith and the love of God daily with my patients, the nurse who works with me, and the other workers in the hospital. She had attended another church that was very tradition based, so worshipping there didn’t satisfy her needs. She visited the church of Christ. After her first attendance, she just stood there crying because she had found what she had been searching for and that she would stay there until her dying breath. In a way, Sowing for Eternity is involved in transporting our heart to someone else. If one looks closely, there are opportunities all around us that allow us to transport our heart in order to share God’s Word. We send our heart with each missionary we help. Each meeting with someone seeking God helps us know that God loves us and those with whom we come in contact. Steve Raines from the South Pacific Bible College wrote this: I want to take this opportunity to thank you for once again coming on board this year as partners with us in the Mission to New Zealand, the South Pacific and even beyond. We also thank you for your faithfulness and commitment to Missions, wherever it is in this world. We feel extremely blessed to be able to serve God and you make that possible for us to continue in our service and ministry to Him. Park Plaza is well known for our heartfelt love of missions. God continues to bless us by sending us these opportunities in which to participate. Our members bring to our attention mission works that deserve financial assistance. Our own members are also blessed by partnering with other congregations going on mission trips. Your generous assistance through Sowing for Eternity helps to provide limited funding to outstanding mission trips and works. The congregation is not approached for mission funding during the year, except during the time of the Sowing for Eternity campaign. This is why we prayerfully consider our part in the evangelism of the world during the 40 Days of Prayer. During the 40 days of prayer, we have included ALL of the ways that Park Plaza members can become involved in the outreach to the world. Not all of these areas we are praying for are supported by Sowing for Eternity funding, but each one is an opportunity to spread God’s blessing. Each of you is being called to consider your part in God’s plan of world evangelism, beginning with your family. The call to travel to distant places may not be for you, but God does have a plan for your involvement in His evangelistic thrust. The 40 Days of Prayer is similar to a blood transfusion in which our entire body is enriched through our experiences. We are all looking for that person who wants to hear the heartbeat of God. Prayerfully consider in the next 40 days how God is calling you. 10 Use your Christ-like mindset to introduce Jesus to your neighbors, friends, clients, students, and co-workers.
