The course clarifies ethical practice in terms of acknowledging sources, copyright, and the consequences of intended and unintended plagiarism, intellectual property, acknowledging sources, intellectual integrity, ethical behaviour in a digital environment, the difference between collaborative learning and collusion and the consequences of cheating in the HSC. It also addresses the principles of good scholarship. You can find the course by typing All My Own Work into Google or entering the following address into the URL of a web browser, http:// amow.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/modules.html . There are 5 modules in the course and each module contains a summary, FAQ, resources and a quiz. Please look at this course in order to work in partnership with your son’s teachers and support him in understanding and recognising the importance of ethical practice in their intellectual pursuits. Epping Boys High School developing the academic social and emotional values and attitudes of students, building partnership, connecting with its community and celebrating success Open Afternoon – This event was organised by Ms Catherine Tang, (Middle School Coordinator). It gives potential future parents and students an opportunity to learn about the programs, teaching and opportunities offered at Epping Boys High School. It also provides an opportunity for students to meet teachers as they move around the school. Our school leadership teams, (SRC and year 10 Mentors) play an important role in the success of this event, walking around with parents answering questions and providing insight into the school. Gifted and Talented Class information Evening –This event was organised by Ms Louise Swanson, (Head Teacher Teaching and Learning and Middle School). It provided detailed information about the Gifted and Talented program offered at Epping Boys High School and the process for applying to gain a place in the program. BYOD information Evening – This event was organised by Ms Louise Swanson and myself. It provided information about devices specifications, school BYOD policy and how the devices are utilised to enhance learning. Please refer to Ms Louise Swanson’s report to learn more about the BYOD strategy. Day Swimming Carnival – The swimming carnival was organised by Mr Tony Nelson the Sports coordinator. It was held last Monday 23rd February. Despite some rain falling, the day was a great success with good student involvement and parent attendance. Carnivals are a compulsory part of school life and must be attended by all students. Homework Centre – This regular event is organised by Ms Abram. It runs every Monday in the school Library from 3:30 to 4:30pm. Students who want to attend need to fill in a permission note and return it with their parent/carer signature in order to attend. Students who attend will receive support with class work and assessment tasks from senior student mentors. Afternoon tea is provided. This is an excellent opportunity for students to build connections with other students and get personalised help with their work. Please promote the value of this afternoon with your son/s. Winter Sports start this week – Sport is very popular and very successful at Epping Boys High School. Not only do we achieve excellent results when competing against other schools but we offer a broad range of sporting opportunities. Mr Tony Nelson is the sports organiser. He is currently waiting for information from some students who have not made a winter sport selection so that he can finalise rolls and allocate teachers. I ask that you encourage your son/s to enter their selections on line as soon as possible. PAGE | 1 STRIVE TO ACHIEVE Deputy Principal Senior School - Ian Lowcock How quickly this term seems to be passing, we are half-way through already! High Achievers How wonderful to see all the fine ,young men from the Class of 2014 return for the High Achievers Recognition Ceremony. The hard work and the commitment paid off for all these goal achievers. Similar to the expression, “behind every successful man, is a successful woman”, behind every one of these successful individuals, were successful parents who nurtured and encouraged them to strive for their goals. From the time they started school (and before) until their 13 years of primary and secondary education was complete, the parents of these young men have put up with good sleepers and non-sleepers; fussy eaters and eaters of locust- plague proportions; tantrum throwers and sulkers; ATM withdrawal like money extractors and independent money earners; sports addicts; computer addicts; and party addicts; through it all, these parents held out the hope that their son would come through all of these phases and be successful. To you parents, I say congratulations, you survived, you did a great job and there is only 1-2years of the terrible teen years to go!! Just on the ceremony, congratulations to Declan Noble, Douglas McKnight and Hayden Tonazzi on being our “stars” of the ATAR,as well as Rohan Dharni, Byeong-Yoon Min, Sam Parkinson, Sarri Talhami, Wylie Wang and John Younan for all being in the HSC All-Rounders list with a mark of 45 or more in 10 units of study. Over 55 boys received an ATAR of 90 or higher. Some very proud boys and their teachers were able to discuss the highlights of the last two years and the result of their labours at the end of the assembly. Uniform Our school has a uniform policy. Unfortunately, a few boys still need to get the idea of wearing it correctly. This is all part of the uniform code. Of particular concern is the incorrect colour of socks (grey is the only colour), ties not at the right position, shirts hanging out (present well and you will impress) and, in some cases, incorrect shoes (leather shoes must be worn as part of the safety requirements in schools). If for some reason your son can’t wear the correct uniform on one particular day, then a note signed and dated by a parent or guardian as to the reason for this breach on that day is required and needs to be taken to a Deputy Principal for a Uniform Cover Note. The sports uniform can only be worn on Wednesdays for students participating in school sport. We ask for parental cooperation in these matters. School Photos School photos were taken on Friday of Week 3 and soon students will be able to have new or updated ID cards for use in the school and as a source of identification in the community. Many thanks go to Mr Hungerford for his coordination of this challenging school activity. Swimming Carnival Congratulations to Mr Nelson, the staff and the students for a very successful swimming carnival which was held at Dence Park pool on Monday of Week 5. There were a number of excellent swims and good participation from those who attended. It was pleasing to see the encouragement the house captains offered to their houses throughout the day, and how close the point scores of the houses were at the end. Sport Congratulations to the KO Cricket team on making the last 4 of the state KO. After our incredible success in rugby last year, it seems our summer sports team doesn’t want to miss out on the limelight. Week 4 also saw the Old Boys versus the current boys’ football challenge match, a very competitive game and pleasing to see how many Old Boys turned up to watch. Visiting the School Finally, a reminder to all parents as a duty of care and child protection for all boys, when visiting the school throughout the day, would you report directly to the Administration Office (A Block) so that you sign in officially and complete proper procedures and/ or seek assistance provided by the Support Staff. This is because we must be aware of all people present in the school at any one time. Please also observe the times and rules of entry to the school when dropping off your sons or picking them up at the beginning and end of the day, respectively. Thank you Finally, I would just like to take this opportunity to offer my thanks and congratulations to Rosemary Dwyer as she comes to the end of term as P&C President. It has been a pleasure working with Rosemary in her presidential role, and her support and commitment to the school has been unquestionable over many years. With two sons having passed through the school, she and her husband Peter, have been strong supporters of the school and public education. Thank you both for all your work and enjoy the next stage of your life. I know EBHS will always remain in your thoughts. PAGE | 2 STRIVE TO ACHIEVE Relieving Deputy Principal - Louise Swanson Year 7 Social Evening Parents of Year 7 students attended a social evening held on 17 February. This was a great opportunity for parents to begin to build relationships with their son’s Year Advisor Miss Sarah Laman, teachers and other parents in their son’s class. Parents shared some of their experiences over the first few weeks of term. We look forward to continuing to develop closer bonds throughout the year. Thank you to Miss Laman who did an excellent job of organising the event. Open Afternoon and 7 Plus Information Prospective parents and students of the school were invited to attend Open Afternoon on 26 February. The event was attended by over 400 people and involved a tour of the school, meeting key staff and the opportunity to ask questions. Several of our students spoke about their experiences at the school. The theme of Daniel Gillespie‘s speech was the immense variety of choices and opportunities that students have in Year 7. Our MCs Kiatin Williamson, Ben Cordner and Andrew Yeung also reflected on their experiences throughout their schooling, including the 7 Plus class. Following the Open Day proceedings, an information session was held regarding the school’s gifted and talented program and the 7 Plus class. The application process for 7 Plus 2016 involves the submission of a portfolio and an exam. 7Plus applications close on 20 March. The entry examination will be on 28 March. Further detail can be found on the school website under the “Our School” tab in Enrolments. Thank you to Miss Catherine Tang who did an outstanding job organising the event. Thankyou also must go to the Prefects and Mentors for all their hard work on the day. BYOD Information Evening An information session was held for Year 7 parents regarding the school’s BYOD program on February 25. Mr Ralph David and myself presented information about the specifications required of devices and the way in which students can use their devices to enhance their learning. For further details there is a specifications document on the school website. Klikon Solutions is a new supplier for BYO Devices who distribute Lenovo computers. Details of all suppliers can be found on the school website under “Curriculum and Activities” and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). Parents may choose to purchase from a supplier of their choice, including one not listed. BYOD Project A team of staff at EBHS is about to undertake an Action Research Project to investigate factors influencing the implementation of BYOD. It will examine the extent to which students are currently engaging with the program and students’ attitudes to BYOD. Teachers’ perceptions of the program will also be examined in addition to teachers’ technology capabilities and the pedagogical frameworks underpinning the integration of technology in the classroom. The aims of the project are to further develop teacher capabilities in integrating technology in teaching practice with an emphasis on more collaborative, creative and productive uses of technology to enhance student learning. Teachers involved in the project will receive ongoing professional development and support. A team of teachers recently visited Microsoft Head Office for training in use of the new Office 365 and Surface Pros. Free software available The Department of Education and Communities has recently signed a deal with Microsoft to allow teachers and students to download Microsoft Office 365 for free. This can be done by the student signing into the DEC portal, clicking the plus sign next to “Learning”, clicking Microsoft Office 365, and clicking on download. In this same location students can also access OneDrive for cloud file storage and online versions of Office 365. Google Apps for Education is also available for use under “Learning”. Discounted versions of some Adobe products can also be found in this section of the portal for use on BYO Devices. Students are required to bring their device every day except Wednesday. Wednesday is a BYOD free day due to sport. All students are expected to bring their device to school fully charged. Cyber bullying seems to be under cover and anonymous. WHO’S responsible? WHAT drives cyber bullies to send that nasty message, post that hurtful comment or embarrassing photo on Facebook or Snapchat? WHY are some people more likely to be a target and why is it hard for victims to be assertive or resilient? WHERE can they go if or when they are being cyber bullied? HOW can we stop cyber bullying from happening? A cleverly crafted narrative allows students to examine these questions AND their own behaviour. Year 9 boys will be attending camp in Week 7, 11-13 March. This is a new camp for our school and aims to be a promising character building experience. It is vital that every boy attend camp and parents are reminded that this is an important component of the BTM program. Boys will be collected from Marsfield Park on the Wednesday at 8:30am and returned to Marsfield park by 2:30pm on Friday 13 March. Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12 boys have all received their assessment booklets for the year. This booklet contains vital information regarding the time and weighting of all assessments for 2015. Parents of senior boys should have received an assessment summary schedule which was emailed to the address held at the school. If you have not received this information, please contact the school to confirm that the contact information held on the school system is current and correct. Senior boys in Year 11 and Year 12 will be sitting for their Term 1 and Half Yearly Examinations, respectively. It is important that they are prepared well in advance of this busy time. Year 12 examinations will be done in a two week block in Weeks 9 and 10. Ongoing discussion about planning and organisation is done with the boys to assist them with their preparation. It is often said that the boys who are least stressed during this time are ones who are organised and prepared ahead of time. Night before study, simply won’t work, and for both cohorts, these are equally important to outcomes assessed, as well as foundation for Year 11 and the HSC. Welfare - Alison Howard A reminder to parents to notify the school about your child’s health We welcome information from parents about your child's health, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. Our school asks for medical information when you enrol your child. It is also important that you let us know if your child’s health care needs change or if a new health condition develops. Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes and other health care related issues (including prior conditions such as medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be provided to the school by parents. Please provide this information in writing to the Principal. This will greatly assist our school in planning to support your child’s health and wellbeing. Please also remember to notify staff in the Administration Office of any changes to your contact details or to the contact details of other people nominated as emergency contacts. All school staff are required to complete annual training in CPR and Anaphylaxis and this was conducted at the beginning of this term. Students who have a health condition requiring support at school are sent a letter annually requesting updated information. It is important that this is completed and any changes are discussed with our Head Teacher Welfare, Ms Howard. Parents also need to be aware that any medication administered at school, needs to be replaced once expired or used. We appreciate your assistance in this regard and assure you that any information you provide the school will be stored securely and will only be used or disclosed in order to support your son’s health needs or as otherwise required by law. The Software Design and Development results were 9.80% above state average and the Information Processes and Technology results were 9.49 % above state average. In Software Design and Development 28.5% of the students attained Band 6 compared to 6.9% in the state and the Information Processes and Technology class had 37.5% of its students achieving Band 6 compared to 7.21% in the state. Band 6 is a mark of 90% and above. The significance of these results is that classes as a whole achieved excellent results because the high performing students set an example and worked as a team to encourage all students to produce their personal best in the HSC examinations. This collaborative learning extended to using social media for students to assist one another. Dedication followed by reward is the pinnacle of success. Four students in the 2014 cohort attained prestigious scholarships for further study at university. The highly sought after Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) degree scholarships were awarded to Nicholas Dwyer, Johnny Sheng Han and Sam Parkinson. These scholarships are worth $46,500. The side has been competing in three separate tournaments, school grade sport, Northern Districts Cup 20/20, and The Alan Davidson Shield. In total, the team has played 15 games this season without loss. The boys won the school grade competition by defeating Normanhurst last Wednesday on a rainy day. Normanhurst batted first and were put under huge pressure by our opening bowlers Cameron (3-19 off 6 ) and Chris ( 1-14 off 7). The game was punctuated by several rain delays and was consequently shortened to 35 overs each. With a steady fall of wickets (Pat 4-12 off 7, Lachlan 0-25 off 7 and Anushka 2-21 off 7). Normanhurst were never able to gain the ascendency and were finally dismissed for 97 in the 32nd over. Epping opened with Tristan (11) and Lachlan (8) who scored at a fast rate before losing their wickets in fairly quick succession. Nick (0) was the last wicket to fall for Epping hitting some sweet shots before being caught. Cameron (59) and Adrian (10) came together with the score on 40 and played some cracking shots to dominate the bowling attack and eventually passing Normanhurst’s total. The Northern Districts Cup is a 20/20 competition for all schools, including private and selective. Epping is currently in the semi final of this tournament and will play Hills Selective Sports High School for a place in the final on Wednesday 4 th March. Probably the team’s most outstanding achievement this season is its performance in The Allan Davidson Shield. This competition is for all non-selective schools in the state. Epping is currently in the semi finals of this tournament having defeated Sydney Met. West and the top side from the Hunter region. This places us in the top two CHS Cricket sides in Sydney along with Picnic Point High School, an awesome achievement! We are currently awaiting the result between Inverell and Maclean that will decide our opponent and whether or not we have a home game or have to travel to the far North Coast. Well done to all the boys and families who have been part of this massive adventure and the teachers who have managed the boy’s study commitments, given the time these matches have taken out of school hours. It was one of the most amazing opportunities for students to participate in a world-wide biodiversity study, meet other international students and researchers, as well as experience another culture. The expedition consisted of a week in the forest and a week at a marine research station. The Forest Week was spent at a node camp in the North Buton Forest, carrying out a biodiversity study, along with other students and academics from around the world. The camp was set-up with tents and a communal eating area. The experience of living and working at a remote forest camp is one that few people forget. The marine week was spent at Hoga Island Marine Research Station where the students spent the week diving on the pristine coral reefs. Hoga Island is an idyllic tropical island surrounded by white sandy beaches. Traditionally-built wooden houses served as accommodation for the students. There are a large number of researchers based at this site which the students had the opportunity to interact with through lectures and hands-on research. This expedition is a rare opportunity for students to be fully engaged in the endeavour of scientific enquiry and research. We are currently in the process of planning another expedition for the 2016 Term 2 school holidays. For further information regarding the expedition and the organisation with which we participate, visit the website: www.opwall.com There will be a Parent Information Evening on Monday, 16 March at 7.30pm in the EBHS Common room. Charlote Palmer from Opwall will be speaking, as well as current students from EBHS who participated in the 2014 expedition. Students can collect information in relation to the expedition and the Parent Information Evening from Ms Dwyer or Ms Lane in the Science Staff Room.
