BOARD MESSAGE

2015 has, so far, been very busy, as we have accomplished a number of projects to better the community. We
have introduced webcasts of the board meetings to our homebound members of the community and later this
year to our snowbirds as they return home. The completion of the blended lines on the courts allows both
tennis and pickleball to be played without chalking the lines and we placed a new security camera on the
courts. Lastly, residents and visitors can now view all upcoming events on the television screen in the lobby.
We have received annual reports from all of our committees and the volunteers on those committees have
worked hard to accomplish so much this past year. We could not accomplish all the projects we have this year
without those volunteers. A big Thank You to each and every one of our community volunteers.
GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

Spring came early this year. We’ve had just enough
rain and warm temperatures to ensure a bumper crop
of weeds. The community’s landscape contractor,
AAA Landscape, is working hard to stay ahead of the
problem and we ask our residents to do the same. No
one likes receiving a letter from the ARC or the GM
with notification that their yard is not up to
community standards and believe me, I do not like
sending them. Having said that, the board is
responsible, by law, to uphold the governing
documents and so the letters have been and will
continue to be sent in accordance with policy and
state statutes.
On a more pleasant note, the great weather also has a
positive effect and that is getting us all outside. While
much of the country is shoveling snow, Sunflower
residents are coming to the pool, riding bicycles and
playing bocce, tennis and pickleball. We are truly
blessed to have so many activities to choose from
here.
You may have noticed we have a new Digital Sign
that has been installed in the lobby. An older, rarely
used television has been mounted on the right side as
you enter the lobby through front doors. A slideshow
program scrolls through and displays information on

many of the various events taking place. We are
hoping to phase out the majority of the poster boards
and notices displayed in the lobby. If you have an
event for your club or committee that you would like
advertised, just let the front desk know and we will
do our best to include your request. As this is all very
new, we ask your patience as we work through any
bugs in the process.
Another new addition is a camera that has been
installed on the tennis/pickleball courts. It has a view
of all three courts and records data for specified time
periods. The recorded video from the camera can be
used for violation enforcement and has already come
in handy in troubleshooting a problem with the court
lights.
PLEASE SHARE THE PATHS

Sunflower has wonderful paths and walk ways that
offer a safe place for residents to get their exercise
and enjoy the beauty of our community. Both walkers
and bicyclists are welcome to use the paths but please
share the space with each other. Walkers are
encouraged to move to the side if they see or hear
a bike coming and bikers should give the right of
way to walkers. There’s enough room for everyone
so please be courteous and share the paths.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
DISASTER RECOVERY AD-HOC
COMMITTEE

Sunflower Community Board of Directors is looking
for 5 dedicated members of the community to
develop a viable business recovery plan for our
community Village Center.
Our community currently has an active Emergency
Preparedness Committee to take care of the broader
need of our community in the event of a widespread
disaster; our goal of the Business Recovery Ad-Hoc
Committee is to focus specifically on the Village
Center and its immediate assets. Some events this
committee would plan for is any event that disrupts
the normal day-to-day operation such as: fire, broken
water main, major power outage, computer system
problems, or loss of a key employee at the Sunflower
Community Association Village Center.
The City of Marana has offered their assistance from
their Emergency preparedness director to assist this
committee and I’ve got templates and years of
experience that I am more than willing to share with
anything you as a committee need from me.
SUNFLOWER PRAC COMMITTEE

The Sunflower PRAC team (Preservation of Reserve
Assets Committee) is actively seeking full-time
residents with an informed interest in Buildings,
Equipment, and Grounds to join us. Please complete
an application at the front desk and turn it in as soon
as possible.
Three of the four current members are not able to
actively participate during the late Spring, Summer,
and early Fall months and that is not fair to the HOA.
So please drop by the Center and volunteer. Our
target is to balance the team with at least four full
time residents and the PRAC charter allows us up to
nine members.

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE

“Trees”, no not the poem by Joyce Kilmer. Fifteen
years ago or so when Sunflower was developed,
many of us planted a 6 or 7 foot high tree as part of
the landscaping requirements. Today, many of these
trees are 30 to 40 feet tall with a similar sized canopy.
As most of our lots are 40 to 60 feet wide, this growth
can often encroach upon the sidewalk, street or
neighbors’ property. Both the Rules and Regulations
Rev.B, Sec.VII D g & the CC&R’s Exhibit D #11
prohibit this encroachment. As good neighbors, it is
up to us to contain the size of our trees and other
plants to stay within the bounds of our property. This
is especially true if a neighbor calls your attention to
an encroachment which is causing problems. An
arborist or qualified landscaper could provide
answers to this problem thereby improving the life of
your tree and maintaining good neighborly relations.

Now is the time to sign up at
the Village Center for the
Saturday, April 18 Yard Sale.
There is a small fee ($5.00 per
site) that all participants are
required to pay. The fee is
used to defray the cost of
maps, signage and advertising.
We have the date, the time is 7 a.m.-1 p.m., we’ve
ordered perfect weather and you’ve gathered together
the items you want to sell (maybe you still have some
planning to do). Here are some tips to help you have a
successful sale.
It can be more fun if your neighbors want to join in; it
becomes a little party.
Yard sales are all about bargains so set realistic
prices. Assign simple prices to your goods: 50 cents,
3 for $1, $5, $10, etc.
Create an organized display. Lay out your items by
category and display items to appeal to your
customers.
Stock up on bags and newspapers. People who buy
small items will appreciate a bag to carry their
treasures. Newspapers are handy for wrapping fragile
items.

presentation not to be missed!
Major General Donald W. Shepperd, USAF (Ret.) is
president of The Shepperd Group, Inc. He performs
independent consulting on defense, strategic
planning, executive leadership, information
technology and visioning and preparation of
executive teams for the 21st century. He retired in
1998 from the Pentagon as head of the Air National
Guard where he commanded over 110,000 personnel,
1400 aircraft, 88 flying units, and 250 support units in
54 states and territories. He is a combat veteran who
flew 247 Vietnam fighter missions.
General Shepperd was a military analyst for CNN
during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and provided
military commentary for ABC radio. He is a graduate
of the USAF Academy class of 1962 and holds a
Masters degree in Personnel Management. His book,
Bury Us Upside Down, about the experiences of a
select group of fighter pilots flying a Top Secret
mission in the Vietnam War has been widely
acclaimed.

As a Professor of Theatre at University of the Pacific
in Stockton, California, I was asked to teach some
“bread and butter courses” that would attract LOTS
of students. In Puppetry, and in Storytelling and
Creative Drama, my students and I experimented with
the least expensive, most manageable materials we
could find to make effective hand-held masks
(mounted on dowels) to be used in performance.
Often, those materials were my old friends: paper,
scissors and glue!
Bring your own munchies and beverage of choice and
we will provide the FUN!
There is no cost for this dance, but a $5.00 donation
will be appreciated.
No sign up necessary, so bring your friends and
neighbors for an evening of good music
entertainment.

St. Patrick’s Day is on the 17th but more importantly
our Bingo day is Tuesday, March 10. Perhaps you
will have some Irish luck a week early. For sure you
will enjoy the game and visiting with your Bingo
friends.
The people who were scheduled to work last month
were Marcia Edgeton and Carol Abrahamson greeting
you at the front desk and selling you the winning
boards; your caller was Sandra Ehlers assisted by
Yvonne Magee who was rolling your winning
numbers. Faythe Mattern was selling you the
specials and reading back the numbers when you
won. They are all wonderful volunteers but some of
them also enjoy playing the game so we need
additional volunteers. It is fun—try it you’ll like it.
Come and bring a new neighbor, a neighbor who has
been before, or just any friendly person who wants to
have a pleasant evening and may even win some
money.
ART GALLERY

Your artist this month is Sandy Persels. In addition
to being an artist Sandy is a member of the Sunflower
Chorale and the Bacchus Wine Group.
“An exhibit of paper masks of desert critters probably
requires an explanation, so this is it: as a child I
excelled at cutting and pasting. This was well before
computers— we’re talking paper, blunt-tipped
scissors and library paste. Occasionally, I was
Strathmore no longer makes the large sheets of heavy
papers I used then; for this exhibition I’ve used card
stock, construction paper, and various other
substitutes. The available papers are also considerably
smaller, so these masks are only about half the size of
those used in performances and stage productions at
U.O.P., the Haggin Museum, and at the University of
South Carolina. The paper-working techniques are
basically the same.
While researching “creature features” I ran across 3D origami, which I’d never tried, so I made a few
critters that wouldn’t adapt readily to mask treatment
and have included them in this presentation. It’s
been fun revisiting my childhood! I invite you to
enjoy this frivolous display.”
Our residents raved about last month’s show. Lee
Botzong’s water color paintings are exquisite.
We would like to see more of Lee’s work on the
Artist Wall next year.

SMOKE DETECTOR TIME

Friday, March 13 is the date scheduled to have your
smoke detectors or its batteries replaced if service is
due. Your Sunflower neighbors who are sponsored
by Northwest Fire provide this twice yearly service
for those residents who are unable to maintain their
smoke detectors themselves. Therefore, if your
batteries haven’t been replaced in the last four years
or if you wish to replace all your smoke detectors,
please stop at the front desk to complete a request to
change the batteries (which are provided by the
resident) or to obtain information on purchasing new
detectors. Purchasing identical smoke detectors is
required as team members cannot do new wiring.
(The two types of detectors used in our homes are
also at the front desk in helping to order new ones.
New detectors come with batteries.)
Residents who have completed a request form will be
called prior to March 13 to finalize an approximate
time for service – either morning or afternoon.
Teams will do their best to honor the requested
replacement time.
In providing this service, additional ladder climbers
would be helpful. If interested, please give me a call
at 572-0587.

CULINARY CLUB LUNCH AND
QUILTED TREASURES FASHION SHOW AND
SALE

The Culinary Club is planning a delectable entrée
salad luncheon and novel fashion show in the Fiesta
Room at the Village Center on Saturday, March 28,
2015 at noon. The doors will open at 11:30 so that
you can visit with friends and relax before lunch. The
menu includes an entrée salad with chicken, a
selection of rolls, a yummy dessert, and iced tea and
lemonade. (I hear that everyone attending will
receive a lovely surprise gift to take home.)
After lunch, there will be a fashion show of one-of-akind “Quilted Treasures”. All items displayed and
modeled will be available for sale. Cash and checks
will be accepted for your purchases. The items shown
will include purses, totes, and other unique items
handmade by Sunflower Quilters.
All quilted items for this show and sale will be
donated by quilters and all money
raised from the sale of these items
will be used to support the charity
work done by Sunflower Quilters for
children, veterans, the elderly, single
moms and others in need.
The items will be “modeled” by
quilters and Gloria Herron will serve
as your tour guide for this fashion feast.

BACCHUS WINE

“How sweet it is!” In February we
created our own Wine and Dessert
Bar in the Fiesta Room, and it was
most enjoyable! The clever, tasty—
and sometimes unexpected pairings—of sweet treats
with wine and not-so-sweet treats with dessert wines
demonstrated that champagne or port with chocolate

aren’t the only options for a wonderfully winethemed dessert. There were pairings to please every
palate, and a fabulous time was had by all!
If you are a convivial person who enjoys wine,
delicious food, great company and good conversation,
you’re welcome to join us. We have fun as we try to
learn more about wine by sharing and discussing it
with others. Bacchus Wine usually meets in the
Fiesta Room at 4:30 on the fourth Wednesday of each
month; occasionally we meet at a restaurant for a

SATURDAY MORNING COFFEE

The first two weeks in March, Barbara
Scott and friends will be your hosts for
Saturday Morning Coffee—Barbara
also hosted coffee March 2014. The
second two weeks in March, your hosts
will be Harry & Jackie Slingland. We
are very fortunate that some or our
wonderful volunteers always step up to
the plate.
Jean Kelly has graciously agreed to host all of April.
Since we don’t get too many new attendees at
Saturday morning coffee, we have to depend on those
who attend to continue to be the hosts. It really isn’t
a difficult job and really can be a lot of fun. If you
have never hosted, please stop by the front desk and
let them know when you are available to host the
event.
We welcome everyone at Saturday morning coffee.
There is a small charge for coffee and donuts. Our
hosts always go to Safeway early in the morning so
the donuts are fresh and delicious. We also have tea,
bagels, cream cheese, jelly, peanut butter, etc. People
attending enjoy the conversation and you can learn
about great restaurants, tourist attractions, etc.

SUNFLOWER MEN’S GOLF CLUB

You might be very pleasantly surprised by how much
you can enjoy this fun, social game.
What a great winter to play golf in Tucson. We have
enjoyed great weather throughout the season so far. I
hope you all are enjoying it as much as we are.
There are a variety of reasons that Pickleball has
become very popular throughout our country in active
senior communities, public parks, and even schools.
It’s easy to learn, fun to play, and does not require
great athletic skills, speed, or strength to be
successful at it.
I would like to give a big shout out to Mr. Gregory
Taylor, Greg won our Net Championship this year.
Way to go Greg! Greg played very well throughout
the tournament and held off many players that were
trying to edge him out, all to no avail.
It is nice to welcome in our newest member, Mr. Bob
Weber. He joined us in January. Welcome aboard.
We are in the process of continuing to play our Club
Championship at this time. There are four flights in
this Championship as to cover all skill levels of
golfers within our club. This allows everyone to
participate and have fun doing it.
On February 9th at Del Urich Golf Club, it is my
pleasure to inform you that our member Jim Dietz
had a hole in one on hole number nine with a six iron.
Wow!! This is a very big accomplishment.
Congratulations Jim. I hope you have many more in
the future.

GENTLE PICKLEBALL

We have initiated Gentle Pickleball here at
Sunflower. What is it? Every Wednesday morning at
10 a.m. we have a special group time for those who
want to play less vigorously or may have concerns
about whether their knees, hips, shoulders, etc., can
handle this sport. If you have the ability to hit a
lightweight wiffle ball with a lightweight paddle, we
invite you to come out and give it a try. You
absolutely do not need to be able to race around the
court like some of our advanced pickleball players.

PING PONG GROUP

We have known for years that working crossword
puzzles and listening to Mozart are good for the
brain. Ping pong (table tennis) may well be the
world’s best brain sport. Our playing times may vary

FUN POKER AND TOURNAMENTS

For those of you who have not had the pleasure of
joining us for an afternoon of fun poker, we play
every Tuesday and Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00
p.m. in the Library.
The Old West may have had their legends with Wild
Bill Hickok, Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and others,
but we too have our legends and enjoy the
camaraderie of being together. Our club membership
is $5.00/year which is due the first of the year. First
time players will not be asked to pay that for playing
their first game. However, if you wish to join us on a
regular basis, then becoming a member is necessary.
We play a multitude of games; however, we are
always on the lookout for new ones to include in our
repertoire!

PINOCHLE

Sunflower Tennis Club (STC) held its first mixer of
the year on January 31. The club introduced new
officers, welcomed new members, enjoyed
refreshments and—despite the rain—everyone went
home with a prize!
Hold the date—March 28—for the next STC
mixer, as chance of rain is slight! Partners will be
drawn from a hat for this round-robin social event,
followed by refreshments and great prizes! STC
offers many opportunities for beginning to
intermediate tennis players to participate.

residents, we would try to change.

We are happy to have Steve Packer presenting a
History of German Research at our March 17, 2015
meeting. Since retiring, Steve has worked on his
family’s German genealogy and has made several
trips to Germany to find family records that have not
been microfilmed or available on indexed database.
Since 2007, Steve has been serving three days a week
at the Mesa Regional Family History Center. He will
give you many new ideas on research. I Look forward
to seeing you and welcoming Steve.
Our Monday Study Group got off to a great start.

CRAFT CLUB

Bow making the professional way and decoupage
plates completed our February Craft Club projects.
Join us for our March projects, March 2 and 9,
adorable bunny grasping a clay pot container, perfect
for a centerpiece. Then on March 16, wrapping gems
acquired at the Gem and Mineral Show with wire and
creating a gem stone pendant. Teabag folding, an art
form started in Holland, can adorn scrapbook pages,
gift or note cards will be presented March 23. Fancy
spiders, shining with beads, will be crafted March
30th.
We always welcome new members, come visit with
us any Monday, 10 a.m., in the Craft Room.
PHOTO WORKSHOP

The photo group will be meeting Tuesday, March
10th at 10 a.m. in the Craft Room of the Village
Center. Our ‘show and tell’ for the meeting will be
recent photos of animals. If any time remains (and
there always is), mini-slide shows of your trips or
outings are always appreciated. We will use the
overhead TV in the Craft Room so bring those slide
shows on a flash drive.
Oh, by the way, we are looking for a volunteer to
bring a laptop enabling the display of your animal
photos on the wall-mounted TV. An HDMI cable will
be required for the interface from that laptop. Thanks.
SUNFLOWER QUILTERS

Quilted Treasures show and sale will be Saturday,
March 28th at noon at the Culinary Club luncheon.
Our fashion show will highlight items for sale -including totes, shopping bags, evening and special
occasion bags, backpacks, aprons, table toppers and
more. All items will be lovingly made and donated by
our club members. All proceeds from the show will be
used to buy fabric and supplies for our Community
Quilt projects that are donated to needy children and
adults in our community.
Our March business meeting will be Thursday, March
5th. At this meeting, we will vote for officers for next
year. Plan to attend and vote.
Community quilt sessions will be the 12th, 19th and
26th. Please bring fabric strips (2 ½” by the width of
the fabric or whatever you have) to mix and match
with others. We have a number of 10” blocks made
from strips of various widths finished. Just a few more
and we will be ready to assemble a quilt or two.
On the 20th, we will have a work day as we continue
to create our Quilted Treasures for the show and sale
on March 28th. We will also schedule time to work on
the paper-pieced raffle quilt that we are completing as
a group. I’ll let you know in the weekly email update
when the dates have been chosen.
Our social quilting days in March are the 6th, 13th, and
27th. It will definitely be a busy month. Come and join
the fun.
SINGLES AND FRIENDS

We hope that all of you had a good Valentine’s
Day and are looking forward to all of the Spring
events.
In February we had a rockin’ good time celebrating
the 60s. With Marty Freese’s help, we remembered
the Bossa Nova, Elvis, Haight-Ashbury and all the
things from that period. It was a fun evening
remembering when we were all younger and stayed
up beyond 9:00 p.m.

March. We are going to be
having a gala Mexican Fiesta
on Saturday, March 21
beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Dinner is going to be catered
by La Olla restaurant. At
press time, the entertainment is a surprise but I am
sure that we will all enjoy it. Tickets will be $10.00
and will be on sale Tuesday, March 3, Thursday,
March 5, Tuesday, March 10 and Thursday, March 12
between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Plan
to come join in the festivities.
Let this be the year you step up with your time and

The hope is to meet in a group of around 8 members
to discuss a wide range of topics. We're planning on
setting the topic at the end of each meeting. We'll

Come, exercise with us! We were very pleased to see
so many residents at our presentation on January 23
and we welcomed some new members but we hope
that even more residents will join us and participate in
one or more of our fabulous classes.
We offer four classes taught by certified instructors.
In order to take any of them, you need your Fitness
Club membership card ($15 at the front desk) and a

month. Janet Yeck got the 6–7–10 split and also a
high game of 158. Irene Harvey got the 7-8-10 split.
Great pickups by these gals!
Dennis “the Menace” Walthall had a personal best
game of 215. Elaine Hewitt got a 198! Linda Ottley
had a 219 and a 204; way to go Linda! Keith Leikel
had a high series of 696 and George Massman was in
good form and turned in a series of 656.
If you haven’t bowled for a while and would like to
test your skills, we always welcome new bowlers.
We have bowlers at all skill levels. It’s an open
bowling/no teams concept. No pressure, just fun.
We bowl Friday afternoons at Fiesta Lanes. Please

SUNBIRD CAMPERS/RV CLUB

The Sunbird Camper/RV Club will be enjoying the
Patagonia Lake State Park Campground facilities for
our “Celebration and Welcoming of Spring” this year
during the third week of March. Most members will
be arriving on Sunday or Monday, March 16th or 17th
and some will be staying the entire week. Others,
especially those members that have sold their rigs,
will be staying a shorter period of time and using the
motel facilities in the town of Patagonia for a place to
sleep. There will be a major gathering on the 18th for
a group cookout and potluck dinner. Other events
will be somewhat spontaneous, but all will be in and
around the park or locations in close proximity such
as Patagonia, Sonoita, Bisbee or Nogales. Individual
hiking, bird watching, and other observation of the
wildlife around the lake is always an enjoyable way
to get some fresh spring air. The fishing hopefully
will be good as well.
Congratulations to Audrey and Jim Anderson who
both received medals for their performances in the
Senior Olympics Bocce Ball competition. Audree’s
team won Gold and Jim’s team won Silver.
We are always open to welcoming new members to
the club so keep in mind that the regular business
meeting is on the first Friday of each month at 10:30
a.m. in the Village Center. Come join us!!
SUNFLOWER TECHNOLOGY CLUB

The recent security flaw with Adobe Flash is a good
example of why joining the Technology Club is a
good idea. Our members were alerted as soon as it
was announced, cautioned on how to handle the flaw
and then notified within hours of the fix being
released.
Security breaches are happening so
frequently that you need lots of eyes on the problem
and that’s just one of the things club membership
gives you.
We are happy to announce that we have added a
touchscreen laptop to the lab running Windows 8.1.
This will give members a chance to try this
technology before actually purchasing it for
themselves. We also added a wireless laser color
printer so that members using the wireless side of the
network can now print out their documents.
We have a lot of exciting training and presentations
scheduled for the rest of the year. We even have a
session about tricks and hints for finding the lowest
prices for merchandise that will save you a lot more
than the cost of the membership. We are also going
to have a repeat of our electronics expo next
November that promises to be even bigger and better
than last year.
Did I mention we’re also a fun club? We’re not a
bunch of computer geeks with a secret handshake but
a large group of people with a common interest and a
great sense of humor. Please consider becoming a
member.

VETERANS CLUB

We were most fortunate to have an excellent
presentation by Mr. Stew Milstein for our February
meeting. Mr. Milstein has spent many years
researching letters and postmarks from servicemen
during World War II. His studies revealed some very
interesting facts about our military history of that era.
Our March meeting is another which you definitely
want to attend as our guest speaker will be Kurt
Johnson, Captain (Ret), USN. Kurt is a Sunflower
resident who is currently on the staff of Colorado
Tech University. While on active duty, Kurt served as
a JAG Corps Officer and he will be sharing his
experiences while stationed in the Middle East /
Bahrain Naval Support Activity, NORAD/
USNORTHCOM, and operations during Hurricane
Katrina and the Sept 11, 2001 attacks.
Our meeting will start promptly at 9:30 in the Fiesta
Room, Wednesday, March 4.

VINTAGE GARDENERS

The world famous Boyce Thompson Arboretum in
Superior, Arizona is the destination of the Vintage
Gardener and Travel Club members on Saturday,
March 14. This 320 acre botanical garden melds
all of the desert plants from the rest of the earth
with those of our native Sonoran Desert.
Those members who have purchased tickets should
be at the Village Center no later than 7:10 a.m. The
bus leaves the Center @ 7:30 a.m. Be sure to wear
walking shoes, take a hat, bottled water and a sack
lunch. The bus will return to the Center at 5:30
p.m.
Members are in luck, as the Arboretum's fabulous
yearly plant sale will be just starting. The large sale
features hundreds of native plants. The Arboretum's
botanists will be on hand to help you with your
selections and answer questions. Bring a sack or a
box to contain and mark your chosen plants in the
bus's storage area so you can assure your purchases
arrive home safely.

At 11 a.m. a botanist will be available to guide you
on a Plants and Landscaping Walk through the
gardens. During the lunch hour you may eat your
sack lunch in a shaded grove on the Arboretum
grounds.

who will present a program in the Fiesta Room at
10:30 a.m. on pest management entitled “What's

Kris Harris has been personal training and teaching
group exercise classes since 2006. She is certified
through the Aerobic and Fitness Association of
America (AFAA). Kris has also taught Mat Pilates
for the past six years and focuses on developing core
strength as well as improving balance in the clients
that she trains.
She is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from
1:15 to 3:15 to provide complimentary instruction
and advice on proper use of the equipment and
machines in the Fitness Center. Kris is available to
residents who wish to have one-on-one personal
training or want to develop a specific fitness plan.

breast cancer. Many of us have been touched more
personally by receiving the diagnosis ourselves.
Whether a person is currently in treatment, a survivor
of a few months or many years, we share common
issues, fears, sorrows, joys and insights. We return to
our daily lives with an appreciation for survival but
find a sense of shared comfort, hope and sisterhood
when we meet someone who has been through the
same experience. I am one of those survivors who
live here in Sunflower and have led the Sunflower
Breast Cancer Support Group for the past 10 years.
My background is in the medical field.

Sunflower Neighbors is a group of volunteers living
in Sunflower who donates time, transportation, and
understanding to those in need. We provide rides
exclusively to doctor, dentist or other necessary
medical appointments when you are unable to drive
yourself. There is no charge for this service, but
donations are accepted. Please allow 4 days notice to
locate an available volunteer and do let us know if
you have special needs (wheelchair, etc.) so that we

GROWING STRONGER

Tuft University research shows that a program of
strength training not only improved bone density, but
also reduced falls and improved arthritis symptoms.
Balance, coordination, flexibility and endurance are
also improved. This program is based on that
research and instructors must be certified.
Our program takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays at
11:30 a.m. Please check your Sun Catcher calendar
for dates and times. There is no fee.

few months up through 22 years. Some visit us to

Again, the Abbott Library is going to be the AARP
Tax-aide site closest to Sunflower for help in filing
your 2014 income tax returns. This service is free.
Tax counselors will be available from 11:00 a.m. to
4:00 p.m. on Thursdays, starting on February 5, 2015.
First come first served.
When you first arrive, you will sign in and be given
an Interview Form to complete. Please bring with
you:
Photo ID
All relevant 2014 tax documents, i.e.,1099 div,
1099 int, Social Security info, etc,
Your 2013 federal and state tax return,
Social Security numbers for all persons listed on
the return, and
Your bank routing and account number (blank
check or deposit slips) for direct deposit of
refunds.
You do not need to be accompanied by your spouse.
If you are filing a joint return, however, you will need
to get your spouse’s signature before we can e-file
your return.
If you are planning to itemize deductions, please
summarize deductable expenses into their categories,
i.e., medical expenses, state and property taxes,
mortgage interest, gifts to charities, and misc.

in 2014, bring your brokerage statements that include
their date of sale and purchase, selling price and cost
basis.
Remember that Arizona personal property tax paid
when you register an automobile is tax deductible.

that came to Winterfest 2015. It was held at
Sportsman's Warehouse on Costco Drive.
The event was held to raise money for The Marana
Food Bank. As with all fundraisers the Lions do,
100% of the proceeds went back into the community
"We Serve". I am pleased to let everyone know The
Marana Host Lions Club will give a check for over
$10,000 to the Marana Food Bank!
There were over 60 vendors, a band, cheerleaders
from MHS, Celtic dancers, and Dan Heston who ran a
double marathon. We had volunteers from Marana
VIPs, Northwest
Fire, and the Marana PD
Explorers'. If you run into one of their members,
