Geeta Dutt hits next Sunday

Satrangi (a music troupe from Mogappair) will present a music
concert of popular old Hindi film songs sung by legendary singers
Hemant Kumar and Geeta Dutt on Sunday, March 15, from 6.30 p.m
to 10 p.m, in TN Rajarathinam Auditorium (R.A. Puram).
Singers Pramod and Usha Raj will sing popular songs from movies
such as ‘CID’, ‘Bees Saal Baad’, ‘Pyaasa’, ‘Kaagaz ke Phool’, ‘Aar Paar’,
‘Kohraa’, ‘Baazi’ and ‘Howrah Bridge’.

The residents were
informed by the workers that the vehicles are parked as per the
instructions of the local conservancy inspector.
A resident said that on protesting to the higher authorities, a zonal
officer visited the street and saw 12 tricycles parked there, but no
further action was taken.

Sidhha doctors recommend
‘Kabasura kudineer’ for swine flu

Like the ‘Nilavembu’ concoction that has been found to
cure patients suffering from
dengue and chikungunya,
‘Kabasura kudineer’ will cure
persons suffering from swine
flu, according to Siddha doctors.
Swine flu is on the rise in
Chennai.
Dr. Ramesh of Govt. Sidhha
Medical College (Arumbak-
kam) said ‘Kabasura Kudineer’ (kabam : cold; suram :
fever; kudineer : concoction)
comprises 15 herbal ingredients and should be administered to patients suffering
from swine flu five times a day
for three to five days. The dosage is 60 ml for adults and 30
ml for children below 10 years.
Dr. Ramesh said that the
medicine can be purchased
from Sanjeevi Pharma (Poonamallee High Road, opposite
Anna Arch, Arumbakkam). It
is priced at Rs. 115 for 100 gm.
He said that the college has
forwarded a memorandum to
the Department of Public
Health to make arrangements
for the distribution of ‘Kabasura kudineer’ to swine flu
patients and also as a preventive measure in all government
hospitals and primary health
centres.

Arrested for cheating
job aspirants
M. Santhanam (37) of Vadapalani was arrested
last week on charges of cheating job aspirants to
the tune of Rs. 6 lakh.
According to the police, Santhanam had promised job seekers that he will get them jobs in a
reputed IT firm.
Believing his words, youths, including many
from this neighbourhood, paid him liquid cash.
The accused never provided them jobs and
when he was approached by them, he pacified
them by offering cheques for the amount he
borrowed from them. But all the cheques bounced
back due to insufficient funds.
Police nabbed him while he was trying to flee
the city. Further investigations are on.

Senior citizens benefitted from the free physiotherapy program
hosted by Help Age India (Raji Street, off New Avadi Road) on March
5.
S. Sarangan (resident of 4th Avenue, Anna Nagar) told this reporter
that the service was good and expert physiotherapists advised him on
the right methods to relieve knee pain.
The NGO, a boon for senior citizens, organizes such programs
frequently. In general, physiotherapy services are offered at nominal
charge of Rs. 50 for senior citizens.
R. Muthukrishnan (senior manager, helpline) told this reporter that
the fees collected are used for other projects of the NGO.
He has appealed to residents to make use of the physiotherapy
service on any day of the week, except Sundays and government

R.V. Narmada of India Track Call Taxi, Koyambedu, and her
accomplice Bharat Kumar were arrested on March 2 on charges of
cheating investors to the tune of Rs. 64 lakh.
According to Central Crime Branch Police, the two attracted investors through advertisements announcing that the taxi firm will pay
a sum of Rs. 5000 every month for 36 months to those invest Rs. 1 lakh
with the firm. For larger investments, they promised more returns.
With the large sums of money they received, they purchased many
vehicles for the firm.
After August 2014, both started evading the investors and stopped

Do not harass pensioners for
life certificate, govt. tells banks

Following complaints received from several pensioners’ forums and associations,
the Central Government
directed all nationalized
banks last week not to insist
that retired government
employees be physically
present for issuance of life
certificates for continuation of
pension.
A senior official of Union
Ministry of Personnel told
media personnel that all
banks have been instructed to
strictly adhere to the existing
norms and not harass pensioners or their kin by
insisting upon physical
presence if their life certificate
is duly signed by the authority
concerned and is submitted
along with Aadhar-based
authentication of life certificate.
According to the rules, a
pensioner is exempted from
physical appearance if he
gives a life certificate duly
verified by a MP, state
legislature, person exercising
the power of a magistrate, a
gazetted government servant,
a police officer not below the
rank of sub-inspector in
charge of a police station, a
block development officer,
tehsildar or naib tehsildar or
treasury officer.
The government has also
informed banks about the
scheme for pensioners to prove
their existence through
Aadhaar-based authentication of life certificate, which
has been started as part of the
Prime Minister’s ‘Digital
India’ mission.
In case of a pensioner
drawing pension through a
public sector bank, the life
certificate may be signed by
an officer of the bank. If a
pensioner is not residing in
India, an agent authorized by
him can produce life certificate
on behalf of the pensioner duly
attested by a magistrate,
notary, a banker or a diplomatic representative of India,
he added.

Government should set up Tree Authority
Sir, In order to save green cover and prevent illegal felling
of trees, the state Forest Department had submitted a proposal
to government for formation of a Tree Authority (TA), but it
remains on paper. Exnora International filed a PIL against
illegal felling of trees in the city. In response, the Madras
High Court had directed the State Government to take action
against unauthorized felling of trees, besides insisting that
the government form a TA. It is time for the government to set

Auto drivers fleece seniors
Sir, An elderly man approached me near Anna Arch to help
him to get into an auto to reach his destination in Kilpauk.
When I stopped an auto, he demanded Rs. 80 as against the
