March 2015, Newsletter - First Presbyterian Church of Clarksville

March
2015
“Lord, who throughout these forty days for us did fast and pray, teach us with you
to mourn our sins and close by you to stay.” (Claudia
Frances I. Hernaman, 1873)
As I write, it hardly seems possible that we have already once
again begun the journey with Jesus through the forty days of
Lent, a journey of forgiveness and preparation for the
Christian Passover, when we will celebrate our redemption
through the death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus
Christ. The journey begins with ashes, an ancient sign of the
frailty and uncertainty of human life—and a sign of our
penitence. The journey continues with prayer and fasting,
works of love, and reading and meditating on the Word of
God.
Each Wednesday in March offers an opportunity for you and me to take part in
evening prayer, personal reflection, and spiritual practices related to
forgiveness. Take advantage of these opportunities on Wednesdays, 6:00 pm 7:00 pm in the chapel:
March 4, Forgiveness: Self-Examination and a New Mind
March 11, SPRING BREAK / NO STUDY
March 18, Forgiveness: Inner Struggle and Confrontation
March 25, Forgiveness: Embracing Freedom and Reconciliation
This journey of forty days culminates in early April during Holy Week, with a
Maundy Thursday dinner in the Fellowship Hall, during which we will remember
and reenact Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples through the sharing of
communion around the tables. We will continue our remembrance of the Good
Friday death of Jesus with a service of Tenebrae (“shadows”). For those who
have never experienced a Tenebrae service, I encourage you to attend this
moving reading and singing of the Passion Narrative during which lighted candles
will be extinguished until the 7 Last Words of Christ from the Cross are spoken in
complete darkness. The Good Friday service is a community event sponsored
annually by the churches of the Clarksville Area Ministerial Association, hosted
this year in the sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church. Finally, gloriously, we will
celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead with great musical fanfare on
Easter Sunday.

Please join as fellow pilgrims of faith on this Lenten-Easter journey and let’s be thankful for the opportunity
that the 2015 Lenten season provides to speak once again openly with our neighbors and co-workers about
the Good
News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Let us pray as we journey with Christ the words that Claudia
Hernaman wrote for The Child’s Book of Praise: A Manual of Devotion in Simple Verse, “Through these
days of penitence, and through this Passion-tide, yes, evermore, in life and death, O Lord, with us
abide. Abide with us, till when this life of suffering shall be past, an Easter of unending joy we may attain at
last.”
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Greg

~MISSIONS COMMITTEE~
Helping Hands
The Missions Committee is offering folks a chance to put their hands to work this spring to help
our community! We will be doing Spring Spruce Ups – chores for church members and for our
own buildings – as well as helping to build a Habitat for Humanity house!
If you know of anyone – church family or friend—who might need help with chores around the
house, please have them contact us ([email protected]) or sign up on the bulletin board)
to schedule a Spring Spruce Up visit from FPC!
Volunteers are needed to help with the chores—if you can use a broom, a paint brush, or ladder,
or if you are just willing to help with some things like changing light bulbs, sign up on the bulletin
board—one list is for help wanted and the other is for volunteer workers! We plan to work on
chores and maintenance on our own church buildings on May 2!
Also we will be helping with Habitat for Humanity in late March/April as they build a 3-bedroom
house off Old Russellville Pike. We will be working on Saturdays – and we need a crew of 10-12.
Don’t want to use a hammer or saw? We can use cooks to provide lunch and/or snacks for the
volunteer workers. Please sign up on the bulletin board to work on-site or to bring food! For more
info, contact Steve Gallaher at 302-985-1707.
Mission Work in Sudan
Jeff Ritchie brought good news of work to support the Sudanese refugees who have moved into
Ethiopia. He will be traveling to Ethiopia in early March with two other workers (One is a Sudanese refugee who has settled in Nashville and is part of the Presbyterian church in Gallatin.).
They hope to find the best way to get Bibles and mosquito nets for the refugees and asked for
monetary help from churches in our Presbytery. The Mission Committee approved sending $700
to the Outreach Foundation for this project. If you are interested in contributing, mark your donation “Sudanese Refugees” and Connie will get it to them. Jeff will let us know that once they find
the best way to get materials/Bibles to the refugees, there will be on-going need for funds to purchase the Bibles from the Sudanese Bible Society.
Mission Work in Dominican Republic
We are excited to announce Cadence Please Ministries will be visiting our church on March 22.
Please join us at City Church as the group leads the services. This missions quartet is doing a
U.S. tour, raising funds for a missions project in the Dominican Republic.
On Sunday, March 22, the group will lead worship at City Church at 5pm. After the service,
there will be an informal music program in fellowship hall, with refreshments.
On Monday, March 23, the group will perform at Loaves & Fishes as part of the Music on the
Menu program. They will stay with FPC families while they are in town.
Our offering at City Church and at the informal music program will go directly to this group to help
them with their travels to the Dominican Republic. Please plan to join us!

Eco-Palms: a celebration of triumphal entry and environmental justice
Page 15
It is estimated that nearly a thousand congregations across the
country will be waving 1 million ecofriendly palm fronds as Holy
Week observances begin this year. As churches of all denominations remember Christ’s arrival in Jerusalem, palm fronds will
play a key role. But have you ever wondered where the fronds
come from and how important they are to the people who harvest them?
Services and churches have joined the initiative, dubbed EcoPalms. The fronds come from communities in Mexico and Guatemala, and workers receive fair wages for practicing sustainable harvesting that protects the local ecosystem.
Working with nongovernmental organizations, the churches
helped communities in these countries establish a system for
harvesting the fronds while preparing for future growth.
The Eco-Palms program protects forests and local jobs and
provides sustainable livelihoods. With the work of various ecumenical partners, it is estimated nearly $1 million is infused in
participating communities. The ecofriendly fronds are purchased directly from the communities at five to six times the
normal payment, which provides a stable source of income for
families. The annual Palm Sunday premium has provided
scholarships for elementary school children who would not otherwise have attended school and has helped young women to
attend college. It has also provided jobs that did not exist previously for women in the communities.
It is also estimated more than 300 million palm fronds are harvested each year for U.S. consumption along. Last year, 974
Presbyterian congregations participated in the Eco-Palms program.
ECO-PALM SUNDAY
CELEBRATING JUSTICE
They took branches of palm trees
and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one
who comes in the name of the
Lord--the King of Israel!”
John 12:12-13
To celebrate Palm Sunday, our
congregation partnered with the
Presbyterian Hunger Program to
use Eco-Palms--branches truly
worthy of celebration.
Eco-Palm harvesters gather only
quality palms fronds in a way that
allows the plant to keep growing.
The communities process and
package the palms instead of
selling to middlemen, allowing
them to capture more of the profits. These jobs also mean youth
stay in their communities instead
of migrating for work.
Five cents of every Eco-palm sold
directly funds projects that improve the lives of all community
members.
For more information, visit www.pcusa.org/palms
This year, we share the jubilation
of Palm Sunday with the people
who harvested our palms. As we
wave our palms, we can truly say,
“Hosanna in the Highest!”
