The Children’s Art After School Program is funded in part by the Oklahoma Arts
Council, Norman Arts Council, and the City of Norman. Please contact the FAC for

The FAC is committed to providing quality art education. The “Creating with the
Masters” series helps children build both basic and advanced thinking skills and
promotes diverse modes of thinking and learning. Each class is unique with faculty
focusing on the Oklahoma Standards for Fine Arts: Visual Arts guidelines and on

Portraits, especially in the 20th and 21st centuries, have
taken on new possibilities. Some are representational,
some are emotional, and some are not of people at all.
Using examples mainly from this period, including artists

Hannah Hoch, students will examine what a portrait can be, primarily through the

This class will take an in-depth look at character design in a
fantasy-themed setting, with students learning how to start

THE MINIATURE AND THE GIGANTIC

In this course we will explore formal compositional aspects
of digital photography, as well as technical methods
for creating images. Students will learn about optical
illusions that can be created using cameras, and learn
techniques to manipulate scale in their images, including

firing of their work. We will study the work of Peter Voulkas,
Hans Coper and Karen Karnes.

DRAWING FROM OBSERVATION

This introductory drawing course will explore the way graphite and charcoal
can mimic reality when applied with purpose. We will cover the fundamentals of
drawing and ways to create drama and interest in your drawings. We will begin
with still lives, and progress to drawing from a nude model in the last five sessions.
We will discuss how to create an emotional space for the viewer to explore using
still life and drawing from the model. This class will cover many challenging
aspects of drawing and each student will receive individual instruction and
coaching to suit their needs and goals. No experiences is necessary; class is open
to beginning and intermediate students. (Teens, 14 - 17, welcome with parental

pieces using a carved block. This class is designed for artists of all skill levels and
will focus on learning basic printmaking techniques while balancing elements of

print several relief wood block prints, both black and white as well as multiple

In this class, beginning students will be introduced to both handbuilding and wheel
throwing techniques. Handbuilding techniques include making coils, slabs & pinch
pots. Students will be taught how to wedge, center and throw small amounts of
clay. Students are encouraged to participate in the complete firing process.
Experienced students will expand their existing skills and be introduced to
techniques for altering various ceramic shapes, lids, handles and spouts. Students
will be introduced to surface decoration procedures and introductory glazing skills.

Students will be introduced to carving techniques for materials such as alabaster,
limestone, and wood. Alabaster instruction will educate students on the use of
files, rasps, rifflers and sandpaper, as well as polishing a final piece. Limestone
instruction will teach students to carve using chisels. Wood carving instruction will
cover the use of chisels and mallets, as well as discs/bits for angle grinders, die
grinders, and Dremel tools. Accomplished sculptors looking for a space to work,
get inspiration, critique, and camaraderie from fellow artists are also welcome to
enroll in this class. Emphasis will be on safety, tools, carving procedures, finishing
techniques, and abstracting sculptural form. Students will need to bring ear/eye
protection and a dust mask. The use of chainsaws is prohibited. A list of tools
needed will be available at the FAC. Sign up early to pre-order your stone (sold

Observation is the star that guides creativity, the thing that gives it direction and
makes it real. Basic sculptural concepts such as form, gesture, composition,
convexity, and structure will be explored and tailored to each student’s needs. No
experience is necessary; class is open to beginning and intermediate students.
Students will receive on-on-one instruction and guidance on how to sculpt a
complex object like a gourd, a portrait, or how to make their own ideas a reality. A

INTRODUCTION TO ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

Through this course students will learn fundamental tools and techniques
to edit photographs using Adobe Photoshop. We will cover post-production
editing, exposure corrections, color corrections, re-touching, repair of damaged
photographs, and compositing of multiple images. Students will develop these

critical facilities by participating in class discussions and critiques.

printing monotypes. A portion of the morning will be devoted to an introduction to
the many approaches of monotype printing. Drawing, direct application of ink as
in painting, collage, transferred textures, templates and stencils are all a part of
how these prints are created. Using plexiglass plates the print sizes will be 11”x17”,
9”x12”, 8”x10” or 6”x6” printed on an intaglio (etching) press. Inks, papers, brayers
and brushes provided. Participants who are interested in collage may bring
drawings, photos or other works on paper.

The Healing Studio is a supportive environment intended to improve the quality

CHILDREN’S SUMMER ART SHOW
THE SAMO DUCKY PROJECT
The Samo Ducky Project began in 2010 as a Firehouse Art Center initiative to
develop an icon that would appeal to all ages and become a symbol of local arts
by promoting and increasing the visibility of public art in the Norman community.
In 2011, the Public Arts Board (PAB) began searching for ideas to enhance our
Norman Parks. The PAB liked the concept of the Cow Parade in Chicago and
other similar projects, but wanted to create something unique, produced locally
and that incorporated its mission, to create exciting, appealing, and harmonious
public spaces through the integration of art into public places.
The PAB accepted a proposal to use the Firehouse Art Center’s original duck,
“Samo Ducky,” designed and donated by Douglas Shaw Elder. The PAB hired
3-D Extreme in Norman to cast fiberglass reproductions of the original duck and
published a “Request for Proposals” to Norman artists to submit their visions of
the duck sculptures to paint and enhance.
THE SAMO DUCKY PROJECT
The goal of the duck project is to create a sculpture that is inviting, stimulating and
that fosters social interaction while enhancing our community parks. In addition
to Samo Ducky, residing next to the Firehouse in Lions Park, there are 15 ducky
installations currently located in Norman:

ART EDUCATION INITIATIVE
The Art Education in Schools Initiative is the Firehouse Art Center’s effort to bring
art education opportunities and experiences to students K-5 in the Norman Public
School system. Along with Firehouse support, these programs could not exist
without grants from the Oklahoma Arts Council, Norman Arts Council, and Allied

243 Lakeview Elementary students received 170 hours of visual art education
using supplies donated by the Firehouse, valued at over $500.
260 Kennedy and Wilson Elementary students receive instruction through an
after school partnership with the Center for Children and Families, Inc. (CCFI)
474 Jackson Elementary students who receive bi-weekly instruction.
Spent 7 days at Kennedy Elementary working with all 434 students on “A
Bright Idea for Kennedy Elementary!” Figurative Language Mural Project.
42 students received instruction during CCFI’s summer programming.
Spent 30 hours working with all 327 students at Lincoln Elementary on new
figurative language murals.
Spent 30 hours working with all 474 K-5 students at Jackson Elementary on
new figurative language murals.
All in-school art education projects and programs introduce visual art education
that connects the students’ current curriculum with the Oklahoma Standards
for Fine Arts: Visual Arts. Projects are designed to allow children to see their
subject from a different viewpoint, to expand the ways in which they absorb
information, and to express their understanding of their education in a vibrant way.
Research has shown that children who can express themselves artistically will
dramatically improve their skills of observation and retention along with their overall
performance.
SPRING 2015 PROJECTS:
Bringing Figurative Language Murals to Additional Schools
In 2014, The Firehouse Art Center worked with all 1,235 students at Kennedy
Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, and Jackson Elementary to create large murals
illustrating examples of figurative language including: simile, metaphor, alliteration,
onomatopoeia, hyperbole, and clichés. During the spring months, the Firehouse
plans to take the project to additional public elementary schools in the Norman
community, beginning with Wilson Elementary. The project is designed to use
visual arts education as an alternative form of learning to help students attain
higher retention and understanding of a challenging language curriculum, while
completing a unified goal to achieve school beautification.

MIDSUMMER NIGHTS
Art Activities
The community’s beloved children’s art activity, the “Children’s Art Wall,”
encouraged 160 young painters to express their creativity. More than 400
children also participated in sculpting foil creations to add to the FAC’s interactive
installation, showcasing the community of sculptures. Over 150 children and adults
participated in figure drawing under the central tent, where attendees were also
treated to creative demonstrations of the classes offered during the year at the
FAC. Elyse Bogart and students crafted silver jewelry pieces, Beverly Herndon
demonstrated the painting techniques of Chinese Brushwork, Adrienne Day
prepared wood blocks for printmaking, ceramics faculty members Joe Cox and
Florene Welcher demonstrated wheel-throwing techniques, and sculptor Craig
Swan worked on a portrait sculpture.
Live Music
Attendees also enjoyed live music provided by McMichael Music Rock Clinic
Bands and local bands Bungalouski, Pidgin, Kierston White & the Dirty Dishes,
Kyle Reid & the Low Swingin’ Chariots, Camille Harp, The Oh Johnny! Girls, Derek

Class registration may be completed in person with payment by check, cash or
credit card or by phone with a credit card. Returned checks will incur a $25 fee.
Early registration is encouraged; please register by March 7, 2015 to
receive $10 off the class tuition fee.

CLASS SCHEDULES:
• Class sizes are limited and enrollment is on a first-paid basis; please register early.
• Classes will be cancelled if they do not meet the minimum enrollment, one
week prior to the start of the semester (March 14).
• The FAC reserves the right to cancel, combine or reschedule any class.
• Instructors may alter the class schedule during a session to accommodate
holidays.
• Students aged 14-17, must have written permission from parents and the
Executive Director to enroll in teen or adult classes.
• In the event of inclement weather, the Firehouse will be closed, corresponding
to the cancellation of OU classes.
POLICIES:
• Payment is due at the time of enrollment; we cannot hold a space unless full
payment is made.
• Cancellation requests received in writing at least one week prior to the first
class (March 14) will be refunded in full less a $20 (adult) or $10 (children) per
class, cancellation fee.
• Cancellations received less than one week prior to the first class will not be
eligible for a refund.
• Cancellation requests may be emailed to [email protected] with
“Enrollment Cancellation” in the subject line.
• If a class is cancelled by the FAC, a full refund will be given.
• Because FAC instructors are contracted on a per class basis, classes will not
be prorated and no other refunds or tuition transfers will apply or be offered,
should a student cancel once a class has begun.
• Refunds and makeup classes will not be provided due to student illness, planned
or unplanned travel, or reasons not the responsibility of the faculty or the FAC.
• The FAC reserves the right to substitute instructors at any time during a semester.
• Outside of tours/open house events, individuals who are not enrolled are not
allowed in a Firehouse classroom except during scheduled class times or by
written permission of the Executive Director.
• Unless notified otherwise, enrollment indicates that students and/or parents
of students grant permission for use of any visual record of students or their
artwork for educational or publicity purposes.
• The Firehouse Art Center reserves the right to refuse enrollment or dismiss
any student for behavior that is disruptive or unacceptable to the learning
environment.
• In compliance with Firehouse Bylaws (Code of Conduct 9.6), behavior deemed
detrimental to the learning environment may result in suspension from
attending Firehouse programs/classes.
• All class registrations are processed in the order in which they are received.
Phone registrations will be documented and ordered by the time in which they
are received, though they are not finalized until we complete registration with
payment.
• Enrollments made a week before the start of the semester or after the
semester has begun will incur a $15 late enrollment fee.

SCHOLARSHIPS:
A limited number of need-based scholarships are available for children and adults.
Parents and students must schedule a meeting with the Executive Director and
complete an application to be considered. Classes must have the minimum
enrollment before a scholarship can be awarded. The application deadline for
scholarships is 10 days prior to the starting date of the class.

Since 1971, the Norman Firehouse Art Center, Inc., a non-profit organization, has
served Norman and surrounding communities with award winning visual arts
education for children and adults, and gallery exhibitions of the highest quality. Our
faculty provide instruction in ceramics, sculpture, painting and drawing, jewelry
construction, stone carving, fused and slumped glass and more, in well-equipped
classrooms.
