We will cover the fundamentals of drawing and ways to create drama and interest in your drawings. We will begin with still lives, and progress to drawing from a nude model in the last five sessions. We will discuss how to create an emotional space for the viewer to explore using still life and drawing from the model. Alabaster instruction will educate students on the use of files, rasps, rifflers and sandpaper, as well as polishing a final piece. Limestone instruction will teach students to carve using chisels. Wood carving instruction will cover the use of chisels and mallets, as well as discs/bits for angle grinders, die grinders, and Dremel tools. Accomplished sculptors looking for a space to work, get inspiration, critique, and camaraderie from fellow artists are also welcome to enroll in this class. Emphasis will be on safety, tools, carving procedures, finishing techniques, and abstracting sculptural form. Students will need to bring ear/eye protection and a dust mask. We will cover post-production editing, exposure corrections, color corrections, re-touching, repair of damaged photographs, and compositing of multiple images. A portion of the morning will be devoted to an introduction to the many approaches of monotype printing. Drawing, direct application of ink as in painting, collage, transferred textures, templates and stencils are all a part of how these prints are created. Using plexiglass plates the print sizes will be 11”x17”, 9”x12”, 8”x10” or 6”x6” printed on an intaglio (etching) press. Inks, papers, brayers and brushes provided. September 4 - October 17, 2015 Receptions, coinciding with the 2nd Friday Art Walk: Friday, September 11 and October 9, 2015, 6:00 - 9:00 PM FA C G A L L E RY CHILDREN’S SUMMER ART SHOW THE SAMO DUCKY PROJECT The Samo Ducky Project began in 2010 as a Firehouse Art Center initiative to develop an icon that would appeal to all ages and become a symbol of local arts by promoting and increasing the visibility of public art in the Norman community. In 2011, the Public Arts Board (PAB) began searching for ideas to enhance our Norman Parks. The PAB liked the concept of the Cow Parade in Chicago and other similar projects, but wanted to create something unique, produced locally and that incorporated its mission, to create exciting, appealing, and harmonious public spaces through the integration of art into public places. The PAB accepted a proposal to use the Firehouse Art Center’s original duck, “Samo Ducky,” designed and donated by Douglas Shaw Elder. The PAB hired 3-D Extreme in Norman to cast fiberglass reproductions of the original duck and published a “Request for Proposals” to Norman artists to submit their visions of the duck sculptures to paint and enhance. THE SAMO DUCKY PROJECT The goal of the duck project is to create a sculpture that is inviting, stimulating and that fosters social interaction while enhancing our community parks. Along with Firehouse support, these programs could not exist without grants from the Oklahoma Arts Council, Norman Arts Council, and Allied Arts, and with generous individual donations. If you would like to support the Art Education in Schools Initiative, please contact Douglas Shaw Elder by email at [email protected]. • • • • • • • 243 Lakeview Elementary students received 170 hours of visual art education using supplies donated by the Firehouse, valued at over $500. 260 Kennedy and Wilson Elementary students receive instruction through an after school partnership with the Center for Children and Families, Inc. (CCFI) 474 Jackson Elementary students who receive bi-weekly instruction. Spent 7 days at Kennedy Elementary working with all 434 students on “A Bright Idea for Kennedy Elementary!” Figurative Language Mural Project. 42 students received instruction during CCFI’s summer programming. Spent 30 hours working with all 327 students at Lincoln Elementary on new figurative language murals. Spent 30 hours working with all 474 K-5 students at Jackson Elementary on new figurative language murals. All in-school art education projects and programs introduce visual art education that connects the students’ current curriculum with the Oklahoma Standards for Fine Arts: Visual Arts. Projects are designed to allow children to see their subject from a different viewpoint, to expand the ways in which they absorb information, and to express their understanding of their education in a vibrant way. Research has shown that children who can express themselves artistically will dramatically improve their skills of observation and retention along with their overall performance. SPRING 2015 PROJECTS: Bringing Figurative Language Murals to Additional Schools In 2014, The Firehouse Art Center worked with all 1,235 students at Kennedy Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, and Jackson Elementary to create large murals illustrating examples of figurative language including: simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, and clichés. During the spring months, the Firehouse plans to take the project to additional public elementary schools in the Norman community, beginning with Wilson Elementary. The project is designed to use visual arts education as an alternative form of learning to help students attain higher retention and understanding of a challenging language curriculum, while completing a unified goal to achieve school beautification. Over 150 children and adults participated in figure drawing under the central tent, where attendees were also treated to creative demonstrations of the classes offered during the year at the FAC. Elyse Bogart and students crafted silver jewelry pieces, Beverly Herndon demonstrated the painting techniques of Chinese Brushwork, Adrienne Day prepared wood blocks for printmaking, ceramics faculty members Joe Cox and Florene Welcher demonstrated wheel-throwing techniques, and sculptor Craig Swan worked on a portrait sculpture. R E G I S T R AT I O N & P O L I C I E S CLASS SCHEDULES: • Class sizes are limited and enrollment is on a first-paid basis; please register early. • Classes will be cancelled if they do not meet the minimum enrollment, one week prior to the start of the semester (March 14). • The FAC reserves the right to cancel, combine or reschedule any class. • Instructors may alter the class schedule during a session to accommodate holidays. • Students aged 14-17, must have written permission from parents and the Executive Director to enroll in teen or adult classes. • In the event of inclement weather, the Firehouse will be closed, corresponding to the cancellation of OU classes. POLICIES: • Payment is due at the time of enrollment; we cannot hold a space unless full payment is made. • Cancellation requests received in writing at least one week prior to the first class (March 14) will be refunded in full less a $20 (adult) or $10 (children) per class, cancellation fee. • Cancellations received less than one week prior to the first class will not be eligible for a refund. • Cancellation requests may be emailed to [email protected] with “Enrollment Cancellation” in the subject line. • If a class is cancelled by the FAC, a full refund will be given. • Because FAC instructors are contracted on a per class basis, classes will not be prorated and no other refunds or tuition transfers will apply or be offered, should a student cancel once a class has begun. • Refunds and makeup classes will not be provided due to student illness, planned or unplanned travel, or reasons not the responsibility of the faculty or the FAC. • The FAC reserves the right to substitute instructors at any time during a semester. • Outside of tours/open house events, individuals who are not enrolled are not allowed in a Firehouse classroom except during scheduled class times or by written permission of the Executive Director. • Unless notified otherwise, enrollment indicates that students and/or parents of students grant permission for use of any visual record of students or their artwork for educational or publicity purposes. • The Firehouse Art Center reserves the right to refuse enrollment or dismiss any student for behavior that is disruptive or unacceptable to the learning environment. • In compliance with Firehouse Bylaws (Code of Conduct 9.6), behavior deemed detrimental to the learning environment may result in suspension from attending Firehouse programs/classes. • All class registrations are processed in the order in which they are received. Phone registrations will be documented and ordered by the time in which they are received, though they are not finalized until we complete registration with payment. • Enrollments made a week before the start of the semester or after the semester has begun will incur a $15 late enrollment fee. Parents and students must schedule a meeting with the Executive Director and complete an application to be considered. Classes must have the minimum enrollment before a scholarship can be awarded.
