Columbus Parks & Recreation New sletter March, 2015 Volume 1, Issue 1 Happy St. Patrick’s Day Shirley B.Winston Recreation Newsletter Volunteer Informants Mission The mission of the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department is to enhance the quality of life for all citizens of this community by providing passive and active recreational, educational, and cultural programming services for all age groups. It is our objective to provide parks and recreation facilities that are safe, accessible, and aesthetically pleasing to the entire community. The Vision The vision of the Shirley B. Winston Recreation Center is to provide excellent programs and customer service that satisfy the needs of the local communities and the City of Columbus. Take a Walk in the Park Day on March 30st @ Shirley B. Winston Recreation Center & Park Please feel free to volunteer to lead activities at Shirley B. Winston Recreation Center, in sport activities, fitness activities and senior activities. Your help is needed daily, weekly and monthly. We are striving to help our community to be the best in the city. So just talk with a staff member about volunteering. Weekly Programs & Activities On Tuesdays & Thursdays, We have Senior Fitness Class at 11:15am to 12:00pm and Aerobics Classes on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 6:00p.m. To 6:55 p.m. We also have Line Dance Class for all ages on Monday and, Wednesday at 6:00pm - 6:45pm Monday through Friday we have daily Senior Pinochle from 12:00pm to 6:45pm in the activity room and leisure recreation activities such as basketball, pool, foosball, ping-pong, air hockey, and many more games for the community. On Monday’s at 5:15pm – 5:45pm we offer a new Fitness Class called Pop - It - Up. Are you stressed out from a long day at work or just stressed out in general from day-to-day things. Then it's a great opportunity for you to take a walk in the park. Monday, March 30, 2015 is “Take A Walk in the Park Day” at the Shirley B. Winston Recreation Center and Park. A walk in the park is just what the doctor order; it's a calming and therapeutic way to relieve stress. Taking a walk doing your lunch break or after a busy workday helps you clear your mind and it quickly re-energizes you. A walk in the park will likely be the most enjoyable part of your day. Make sure you start your walk with a clear mind and open eyes. In addition to a voiding a fall, open eyes will allow you to take in the beauty of nature such as flowers, trees, birds and other wildlife. Activities Held at the Center The recreation center is comprised of a gymnasium, weight room, aerobics room, activity room, full size kitchen, game room and locker room. The center can also be rented for private gatherings, reunions, sport events or banquets. The leisure pool has water fountains, water buckets, slide, swim lap area, locker rooms and concession stand. The department offers an array of diverse programs for youth that will improve the athletic performance while building character and social skills. Monday – Friday Late-Afternoon Teens & Young Adult Open Full Court Play 3:00pm – 5:45pm Athletics Shirley B. Winston Recreation Center provides quality programs in youth and adults athletics. To learn more about Shirley B. Winston sports programs, join us daily. Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday Gym Close for Adult Aerobic Class @ 6:00pm Daily Leisure Recreation Games and Activities. Reservations must be made no less than three (3) weeks or no more than six (6) months in advance, unless the Director of Parks and Recreation or the Recreation Services Division Manager grants prior approval.
