G HYMN OD is Love: let heav’n adore him; God is Love: let earth rejoice; Let creation sing before him, And exalt him with one voice. He who laid the earth’s foundation, He who spread the heav’ns above, He who breathes through all creation, He is Love, eternal Love. God is Love: and he enfoldeth All the world in one embrace; With unfailing grasp he holdeth Every child of every race. And when human hearts are breaking Under sorrow’s iron rod, Then they find that selfsame aching Deep within the heart of God. God is Love: and though with blindness Sin afflicts the souls of men, God’s eternal loving-kindness Holds and guides them even then. Sin and death and hell shall never O’er us final triumph gain; God is Love, so Love for ever O’er the universe must reign. Tune: Blaenwern William Rowlands (1860-1937) Words: Timothy Rees (1874-1939) Remain standing 5 THE BIDDING PRAYER led by THE VERY REVEREND DR DAVID ISON, DEAN OF ST PAUL’S W ELCOME to this Cathedral Church today: to all who represent this nation and the international community, to representatives of the Church and other faith communities, to those who have served and suffered, and to those who have lost the ones they love; as we come to remember before God those men and women who have served in Afghanistan in the cause of peace and security, and to reflect upon our common humanity and the need for unity. We give thanks for the commitment of our service personnel, aid agencies and support organisations to friend and to stranger, and for the skill and expertise with which they have striven for peace and the common good. We commemorate with sorrow and regret those who have died in these operations, and pray for their families and friends and for all who mourn their loss. May they rest in peace and rise in glory. We remember those who have been injured in body, mind or spirit and we pray for their continued well-being and for those who especially support them. And we pray for the nation of Afghanistan, for its people and its leaders, remembering the fear and death and loss that they too have known, and the danger which people in that great country continue to face today. May they share in the many riches which earth affords and contribute actively to the good of the international community. We also pray for ourselves and for men and women of peace throughout the world: that in political and religious life, in education and the arts, in sport and in charitable concerns, and in our relationships with others, we may campaign for peace and goodwill, that hearts and minds may be turned away from hatred towards the vision of a world where barriers are broken down and love is all in all. So we come from many places, from different traditions of faith, to unite in thanksgiving, in remembrance, and in prayer before God; as we pray together: O UR Father, who art in heaven; hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Sit 6 REFLECTION THE REVEREND CANON MICHAEL HAMPEL, PRECENTOR RESIDENCE, says A OF ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL, CANON IN SOLDIER said to Jesus, ‘Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed.’ Let us pray, in all humility, for God’s healing touch to be laid upon a troubled world and reflect on what is broken and our resolve to mend and rebuild. THE REVEREND ALASDAIR NICOLL, RAF (Baptist Church), says The divisions made in your world on account of race: For the healing of the nations, Father, forgive. THE REVEREND DR SCOTT SHACKELTON, RN (Church of Scotland), says The disharmony brought upon your world on account of religious division: For the healing of the nations, Father, forgive. THE REVEREND NICOLA FRAIL, CF (Church of Scotland), says The inequality fostered in your world on account of gender: For the healing of the nations, Father, forgive. THE REVEREND DAWN COLLEY, RAF (Methodist Church), says The disadvantage built into your world on account of money: For the healing of the nations, Father, forgive. THE REVEREND NIGEL BEARDSLEY, RN (Church of England), says The violence wrought in your world on account of hatred: For the healing of the nations, Father, forgive. 7 THE REVEREND RICHARD SMITH, CF (Methodist Church), says The indifference shown to your world on account of waste: For the healing of the nations, Father, forgive. THE RIGHT REVEREND NIGEL STOCK, Bishop to HM Forces, says Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgives you. The Choir sings K YRIE eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Words: Penitential Rite Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Music: from Messe de Requiem (Op. 9) Maurice Duruflé (1902-86) M The Canon in Residence says AY God who has called us to be kind to one another, tender-hearted and forgiving, pour upon us the riches of love and grace, free us from evil, and strengthen us to live in peace with all the peoples of the earth. Amen. Stand HYMN during which a cross, from the memorial at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan, and destined for the new memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, is borne through the Cathedral by representatives of the three Forces and presented at the altar F OR the healing of the nations, Lord, we pray with one accord, For a just and equal sharing Of the things that earth affords. To a life of love in action Help us rise and pledge our word. Lead us forward into freedom, From despair your world release, That, redeemed from war and hatred, All may come and go in peace. Show us how through care and goodness Fear will die and hope increase. 8 All that kills abundant living, Let it from the earth be banned: Pride of status, race or schooling, Dogmas that obscure your plan. In our common quest for justice May we hallow life’s brief span. You, Creator–God, have written Your great name on humankind; For our growing in your likeness Bring the life of Christ to mind; That by our response and service Earth its destiny may find. Words: Fred Kaan (1929-2009) Tune: Westminster Abbey Adapted from Henry Purcell (1659-95) Sit REMEMBRANCE A Chaplain’s memory of Camp Bastion read by THE REVEREND DR DAVID G COULTER QHC, CHAPLAIN GENERAL OFFICER CADET NOOR AZIZ, ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY, SANDHURST, leads the following Responsory I saw water flowing from the threshold of the temple. Where the river flows everything will spring to life. On the banks of the river grow trees bearing every kind of fruit; their leaves will not wither nor their fruit fail. Their fruit will serve for food, their leaves for the healing of the nations, for the river of the water of life flows from the throne of God and of the Lamb. THE MOST REVEREND AND RIGHT HONOURABLE JUSTIN WELBY, ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY, rededicates the Bastion Cross for the new memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum T O the greater glory of God and in thanksgiving for lives well lived and good examples set, we dedicate this cross as a sign that love conquers death and as a memorial to those who have died: in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 9 The Choir sings U NTO them that overcometh shall be given of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. On either side of the river groweth the tree of life, the leaves of the tree are for thy healing. In the midst of that fair city flows the river of water of life clear as crystal. Whoso will, let them take to the water of life freely. Whoso drinketh of this water shall never thirst. Take thou the leaves of the tree of life. So shalt thou enter in through the gates of the city. Music: The Song of the Tree of Life Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) Words: derived from Revelation THE RIGHT REVEREND AND RIGHT HONOURABLE DR RICHARD CHARTRES, BISHOP OF LONDON, prays A THE COLLECT LMIGHTY God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace: give us grace seriously to lay to heart the great dangers we are in by our unhappy divisions. Take away all hatred and prejudice and whatever else may hinder us from unity and peace; that, as you are the God and Father of us all, so we may from henceforth be all of one heart and of one soul, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith and love, and may with one mind and one mouth glorify you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. I THE OLD TESTAMENT READING: LAMENTATIONS 3. 22-33 read by THE REVEREND CHRISTINE MCSPADDEN, ASSOCIATE PRIEST OF ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL T is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord. It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him. He putteth his mouth in the dust; if so be there may be hope. He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him: he is filled full with reproach. For the Lord will not cast off for ever: But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies. For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men. 10 Stand L HYMN EAD us, heavenly Father, lead us O’er the world’s tempestuous sea; Guard us, guide us, keep us, feed us, For we have no help but thee; Yet possessing every blessing If our God our Father be. Saviour, breathe forgiveness o’er us, All our weakness thou dost know; Thou didst tread this earth before us, Thou didst feel its keenest woe; Self denying, death defying, Thou to Calvary didst go. Spirit of our God, descending, Fill our hearts with heavenly joy; Love with every passion blending, Pleasure that can never cloy; Thus provided, pardoned, guided, Nothing can our peace destroy. Words: James Edmeston (1791-1867) Sit Tune: Mannheim Melody in Friedrich Filitz’s Choralbuch (1847) Harmony by Lowell Mason (1792-1872) THE NEW TESTAMENT READING: MATTHEW 5. 1-12 read by THE RIGHT HONOURABLE DAVID CAMERON, MP, PRIME MINISTER A ND seeing the multitudes, Jesus went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. 11 THE ADDRESS given by THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY The Choir sings T THE ANTHEM HE Lord hath created medicines out of the earth; and he that is wise will not abhor them. And he hath given men skill, that he might be honoured in his marvellous works. My son, in thy sickness leave off from sin, and order thy hands aright, and cleanse thy heart from all wickedness. Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come; he will come and save you. Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them: and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing: the glory of Lebanon shall be given unto it, the excellency of Carmel and Sharon, they shall see the glory of the Lord, and the excellency of our God. O Saviour of the world, who by thy Cross and precious Blood hast redeemed us, Save us and help us, we humbly beseech thee, O Lord. Music: Strengthen ye the weak hands William Harris (1883-1973) Words: Ecclesiasticus 38. 4, 6, 9, 10, 12; Isaiah 35. 1-6; Book of Common Prayer 12 Kneel or sit PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION led by THE REVEREND ROSEMARY MORTON, SUCCENTOR OF ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL L ET us pray for all who suffer as a result of conflict, and ask that God may give us peace: SQUADRON LEADER ADAM BOOTH, PERMANENT JOINT HEADQUARTERS, prays For the service men and women who have died in the violence of war, each one remembered by and known to God; may God give peace. Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world, and grant us the grace to pray for those who wish us harm. As we honour the past, may we put our faith in your future; for you are the source of life and hope, now and for ever. Amen. The Choir sings G OD so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved.
