2015 History Tour
On March 27th a tour bus filled with 43 students and 13 sponsors will depart
Liberty Center bound for Arizona, the first destination of the 2015 History Trip.
Veteran history teacher Ron VanStrien has organized the trip, his 9th one, which has
been scheduled every other year since 1993. About 350 students have participated
in these trips over the years. He has also organized some mini 2-day history trips
in the off-years.
The trip will travel through 10 states outside of Iowa with stops in Arizona, California (Palm Springs, Laguna Beach, Fairfield), Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. The
group will visit the folllowing sites:
Arizona: The Painted Desert, Petrifiied Forest, Meteor Crater, Grand Canyon.
California: Paramount Studio, President Nixon’s Library & Museum, President
Reagan’s Library & Museum, Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage, Hollywood
Walk of Fame, Hollywood Sign, Fort Point National Site, Golden Gate Bridge, Maritime National Historic Park, Alcatraz, Donner Memorial State Park
Nevada: Virginia City Comstock History Center
Utah: Salt Lake City State Capitol, Great Salt Lake, Pioneer Memorial Museum,
Salt Lake Temple, Golden Spike National Historic Site.
Wyoming: Fort Bridger, Independence Rock State Historic Site
The group will return on April 5th.

Snow Days
So far this year we have missed two
days due to snow or cold. We used both
of our built-in make-up days for those,
so any further days missed will be made
up at the end of the school year.
Despite the doldrums of winter, February was a very busy month here! We
hosted two state wrestling tournaments
and three state basketball tournament
games. Great job Mr. Cruikshank for
facilitating these events.
Iowa Assessments
We have received our state assessment test results and they look pretty
good! Congratulations to the 7th grade
class for the most overall improvement
from their scores last year. The 5th and
10th grade classes improved or maintained their scores in all four core areas.
Thank you to all our students for
their efforts on these important tests.
Basketball
Congratulations to our boys and girls
teams for their hard work throughout the
season. The girls made it to 2nd round
of regional play, but lost to Grandview
Christian. No rest between seasons;
track practice has already begun!
Wrestling
Congratulations to our SEW-MD
squad for their many accomplishments
this season! They earned sectional and
district championships, with 11 district
qualifiers and 8 state qualifiers.
The team won a thrilling match-up
against West Marshall on Feb. 10th to
qualify for state duals. The last time
SEW sent team to state was in 2000. They went on to reach the finals at
the state tournament by defeating Logan-Magnolia and Alburnett. In the
finals they gave it their all, each team
winning 7 matches, but fell short by 7
points.
A special congratulations to Coach
Dallas O’Brien for earning his 100th
win this season, and being selected
the 1A Southwest Division Wrestling
Coach of the Year.
Speech Competition
We had four groups compete at district contest. Our Short Film group received a Division I rating and went on
to compete at state Feb. 7th where they
received another Division I rating. Unfortunately they did not move on to AllState competition. Great job though!
Speech students are gearing up for
individual contests beginning Feb.

Wrestling
Southeast Warren wrestling team
hosted the sectional wrestling meet on
February 7th. As a team the Warhawks
finished first and advanced to the Regional Team Dual that was hosted on
February 10th where they took on Lynville-Sully and won 59 to 22. In the Regional Team Dual Final the Warhawks
beat West Marshall 36 to 30 to qualify
for the State Team Duals in 15 years.
As a result of their performance at
sectionals the wrestlers had eleven individuals move on to the district meet.
As a result of finishing in the top two,
the following wrestlers advanced on
to the district meet on February 14th
Interstate 35. The top two place winners at districts advanced on to the State
Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines
on February 20th to 22nd.

As a team the wrestlers finished in
1st place in their district.
At the State Dual Team Wrestling
Tournament the wrestling team finished
as State Runner-Ups.
In the quarterfinal round the Warhawks beat Logan-Magnolia 38 to 26.
In the semi-final round they edged by
Alburnett 37 to 36. In the State Championship Finals the Warhawks fell to
Clarion Goldfield 33 to 26. Their state
runner up finish is the highest ever finish at the State Dual Tournament for SE
Warren.

Sydney Jellison, a SE Warren junior,
has been nominated to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Boston, MA on June 24-26, 2015.
The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want
to become physicians or go into medical research fields. The purpose of this
event is to honor, inspire, motivate and
direct the top students in the country to
stay true to their dream and provide a
path, plan and resources to help them
reach their goal.
Sydney was nominated by Dr. Connie Mariano, the Medical Director of
the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists to represent Iowa based on her academic
achievement, leadership potential and
determination to serve humanity in the
field of medicine.

year but Jake Hunerdosse and Jacob
Hoch broke the school’s career wins
record which was 165 set by Andy Ohnemus in 2003.

The girls basketball team finished
the season with a record of 13 wins and
10 losses, 7 and 9 in conference play.

The boys basketball team finished
the season with a record of 3 wins and
19 losses, 2 and 14 in conference play.

Band Notes
It has been a very productive school
year for the Southeast Warren Band Department. Here is an update how each
group is doing, and upcoming events
for the Warhawk Band.
March brings a busy time for the
band members, with finishing basketball pep band, the talent show, honor
band opportunities, and solo contest.
PEP BAND Congrats to the high
school pep band, for their successful
support for the Warhawk basketball
teams for 6 home games this year. They
were a great support!
HONOR BANDS In January, flutist Ilyse Putz and bassoonist Alex Lerch were selected to participate in the
Simpson High School Honor Band Festival, held at the college. Later that week
in January, tenor saxophonist Emma
Preston, trumpetist Katie Kelso, and
trombonist Kalani Wagner were selected for the Simpson Junior High
Honor Band Festival. Emma played in
the “Gold” band, and Katie and Kalani
were a part of the “Red” band.
On February 10, four sixth grade
band members were selected to participate in the Des Moines Metro Honor
Band Festival, held at St. Francis of Assisi school in West Des Moines. Flutist
Allison Cooper, clarinetist Makayla
Ruble, alto saxophonist Augustina
Gavin, and tenor saxophonist Luke
Prater really enjoyed their first honor
band, and represented the school very
well.
On March 9, eight high school band
members will perform as part of the POI
Bonor Band Festival, held at Graceland
University. Flutist Ilyse Putz, clarinetist Alexe Johnson, bass clarinetist Kelli Chapman, alto saxophonist Sydney
Jellison, tenor saxophonist AJ Mitzelfelt, bassoonist Alex Lerch, trombonist
Max Lerch, and tubist Cody Cox will
have a great time, and represent our
school well.
FAB NIGHT On Thursday, March
12, the Fine Arts Boosters have brought
back the spring talent show, and we
hope to see you there! Singers, dancers,
featured speech members, and the band
and choir will be performing. Please

information.
SOLO CONTEST On Thursday,
March 19, the band will be having their
annual 4-8 grade solo contest, held
from 4-8PM, in the High School Band
room. Mr. Nathan Smith, music director at Twin Cedars-Bussey CSD will be
judge, and the students will get to show
off their musical talents.
This has been an amazing and productive third quarter for the band program, and we look forward for another
busy rest of the school year! Thank

Geography Bee
The Geography Bee was held on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 8:30 a.m. in the Intermediate Center lunchroom with ten students competing. This year’s contestants
were: Sydney Metz (4th), Will Prater (4th), Ethan Schnathorst (5th), Jeffrey Oakley
(5th), Will Bishop (6th), Mason Merfeld (6th), Hunter Thompson (7th), Lela Bales
(7th), Lane Dittmer (8th), and Cole Miller (8th). Congratulations to each of these
contestants who won a class competition to earn their spot in the contest.

KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUP
There will be a one-day introductory Kindergarten Round-up session for all of
our 2015-2016 kindergartners on April 24th. Students must be 5-years-old by September 15, 2015 to be eligible for kindergarten next year. This one-day session will
be a full day and run the same hours as a regular school day. Please contact Patty
at the SEW Primary School, 641-942-6216, with questions regarding bus transportation for students who normally ride the bus. There will be no kindergarten or
4-year-old preschool classes held that day.
Roundup offers the opportunity for your child to get to know the kindergarten
teachers and learn about the kindergarten routine. While your child is with us, there
will be vision screening, stories, lunch, recess and a chance for our staff to evaluate
the developmental levels achieved by the four-and five-year-olds attending. Students attending Roundup should bring either $2.10 for lunch or a sack lunch.
If your child is not included on the list below and will be five on or before
September 15th, please call Patty at the Primary School at 641-942-6216. In early
April an informational packet will be sent to the parents of all students listed below
and to those who pre-register.

Southeast Warren will again be offering four half-day-a-week preschool
classes for district four-year-olds. Qualifying children for the 4-year-old program must be 4 years of age by September 15, 2015. Hours for the AM class are
8:10 AM to 11:00 AM. Hours for the
PM class are 12:10 to 3:00 PM. Classes
meet Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and
Friday. The four-year-old program’s tuition is currently covered by the Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program and
is tuition-free. There is a $25/ semester
milk fee and $25/year snack fee for all
4-year-old students. The school’s Elzora
Town Daycare also offers wrap-around
childcare; please contact Patty for details about this program.
Qualifying children for the 3-yearold program must be three years of age

County Empowerment Board. There
is also a $12.50/semester milk fee and
$25/year snack fee for three year olds.
We will be hosting a Preschool
Open House from 6:00 – 7:00 PM on
March 12th at the Primary building.
Parents of children who will be either
three or four years of age by September
15, 2015 are encouraged to attend this
open house and sign up for the 201516 school year. At this open house, your
child can meet the preschool teacher
and teacher associate, learn about our
programs, and visit the classrooms. The
nurse will be available for immunization
questions and preschool health packets
will be distributed. These packets contain forms that need to be completed
and returned before your child enters
preschool in the fall.
Accelerated Readers
Here are the reading levels for the students at the Milo Primary building for the 3rd quarter. We would like to thank PIE for
hosting our AR parties each quarter. We would also like to thank PIE for purchasing and donating books from the book fair for
our classrooms!
On February 27th Milo will be participating in “Read the Most from Coast to Coast!” We have participated in this event for
the past two years and the students really enjoy it!

PAGE Friendship Fair 2015: Japan
For our Friendship Fair this year the Primary Center will be studying the country of Japan. We will be learning about the customs, food, and life of the Japanese
people.
The staff is anxious to share with the students any artifacts the community might
have from Japan. If you have made a trip to Japan, if you have items from Japan, if
you have any connection to the country or people of Japan and would like to share
with the students at the Primary Center, please contact the Milo Primary office
at 942-6216 and leave a message for either Mrs. DeJoode, Mrs. Burgin, or Mrs.
Seuferer.
We are always willing to have community members come to share, so if you
wish to speak to Kindergarteners through third grade about Japan, please contact
the school as soon as is convenient.
We will kick off our study of Japan this year with a kite flying contest, scheduled
May 5th - Children’s Day in Japan. Students will be flying homemade kites with a
chance to win a prize for several different categories. Should the weather cooperate, come join the fun Tuesday afternoon, May 5th.
At this time we are planning our annual Friendship Fair program to be held in the
morning on the next to the last day of school. Our students will share what we learn
about the country of Japan in our new air conditioned gym! (watch for the exact
program time to be announced).

Regular Board Meeting
January 12, 2015
The Southeast Warren Board of Education met
in regular session January 12, 2015 in the media
center of the Junior/Senior High School building.
Board President Ron Miller called the meeting to
order at 5:30 p.m. The following board members
were present: Larrie Williams, Rande Seuferer,
and Jennifer Mihalovich. Bruce Williams was
absent. Superintendent/Secondary Principal
Delane Galvin, Elementary Principal Dan Dow,
Transportation Director Joel Mosher, and Board
Secretary Julie Wilson were also in attendance,
along with members from the community.

BOARD SALUTES: Superintendent Galvin recognized the following: The wrestlers for winning
the POI wrestling tournament. Beth Mosher for
her generous donation towards the purchase of
pink uniforms for the boys and girls basketball
teams. They will be wearing these uniforms on
Hoops for Hope night. Also, Mrs. Birchette and
the Student Council for a successful Angel Tree
operation. They sponsored 12 families with a total of 40 children. This was the largest number
of children the group has sponsored. The community generosity was evident through monetary
donations and the numerous gifts dropped off at
school for the council members to wrap and present to these needy families. This was a lot of
work, so hats off to the Student Council for their
efforts.
REPORTS:
Transportation Report submitted by Joel Mosher:
We had 21 extra bus trips for the month of December. The rest of the month was spent doing
general repairs.
Primary Principal’s Report submitted by Dan
Dow:
Small Town Country Christmas on Saturday,
December 6th, was a success. Many cookies,
books, and classroom basket raffle tickets were
sold. The elves’ workshop, which entertained
many children while their parents shopped, and
vendor fees from several community vendors,
who set up their tables in the new gym, brought
in some additional revenue.
The basket raffle money will be used to fund our
field trips at both the Primary and the Intermediate buildings, and the rest will be used for future
playground needs and classroom supplies. The
Country Christmas day, along with our fall and
spring fundraisers, are the three biggest fundraisers for the Partners in Education group.
PIE is sponsoring an Accelerated Reader party
for second and third graders reaching their reading goals for the second quarter on January 9th.
Second quarter report cards will be sent home
the week of January 12th. Teachers are preparing for our upcoming parent/teacher conferences
in February.
Third graders will be given the Iowa Tests of Basic
Skills the week of January 12th, and kindergarten
through third graders will be taking their mid-year
FAST tests during the next week. Following these
tests, the teachers meet on Data Day and reorganized reading intervention groups. These new
assignments, based on student performance, will
start on Monday, February 2nd.
Coming up in January, PIE is serving supper during the adult volleyball league, which meets in
Milo on Sundays. This free-will donation supper
is a good fundraiser for them.

Winter DIBELS has been completed.
Report cards for 1st Semester went home
with students on Friday.
Iowa Assessment testing started today in the
Intermediate Center.
The Geography Bee will be held here in the
Intermediate Center on Friday, January 23rd at
8:30am.
We have tentatively scheduled the 1st Semester Awards Assembly for Friday, January
30th. This assembly is held in the gym and parents are welcomed to attend. Awards are given
for attendance, honor roll, and for showing good
character.
Athletic Director’s Report submitted by Blake
Cruikshank:
JH Wrestling: We have started wrestling
practice this past week and we currently have 15
kids out this season. Two MD students and one
home school student.
Girls JH BB: We have three games left for
this season
Boys BB: The boys BB team is currently 2-7.
The leading scorers are Lance Hoch at 16.5
pts per game and Jackson Fischer 11.8 pts per
game. Jackson Fischer leads the team with 20
assists. Keetan Lawler is leading the teams in
Rebounds at 9.3 per game
The first of February Post Season Brackets
will be posted.
Girls BB: The girls BB team is 5 and 4. The leading scorers are Sierra Dorsey at 13.9 pts per
game and Raelyn Meling 9.9 pts per game. Raelyn Meling leads the team in assists with 41.
Sierra Dorsey leads the team in Rebounds at 7.3
per game.

Wrestling: In late December we competed in

the POI Wrestling Tournament and finished 1st
in the conference. We had 7 champions and 1
runner-up.
In early January we competed in the Eddyville Blakesburg Tournament where we went 5
and 0 as we beat EBF in the championship.
This last week we competed in the 1st annual
Warren Co. Duals and went 2 and 1. Beating
Carlisle and Norwalk and losing to Indianola
We are making final preparations for hosting
sectionals on February 7th.
Additional Info: We will be competing in the
POI Academic Bowl at East Union on January
28th.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT: Superintendent Galvin reported on the following items:
1. We had our first snow day on January 7th;
the day will be made up on January 19th.
2. January 5th was a teacher workday. EMC
Insurance presented slip and fall training for the
certified staff and bus drivers. Support staff will
have the training on January 28th.
3. This is one of the better winter sports seasons the district has had for a while. Girls’ basketball, boys’ basketball, and wrestlers are all
doing well.
4. The next Children First Forum meeting will be
held on January 27th. All board members are
welcome to attend.
5. We will be hosting the wrestling sectionals on
February 7th.
6. Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on
February 9th and 12th.
WELLNESS COMMITTEE UPDATE: Dianne
Chambers related to the Board that the Wellness
Committee had met and developed the following
list of items to be addressed in the coming year:
• Continue to look for new members as well as
encourage current members to get involved.
• Continue to encourage K-6 teachers for
healthy snacks and rewards.
• Check into the backpack program for our district. Dianne will contact Pastor Amy Johnson for
clergy support that is needed for this program to
be successful.
• Get more information out to parents in regards to packing healthy lunches for their students.
• Have Mr. Dow and Mr. Galvin address teachers in regards to holding kids out of PE class for
makeup work/tests. PE is a required class, not a

“fun” class.
• No sales of candy, etc. that don’t meet the
guidelines!!
• Encourage drinking of water at all grade levels and look into cost of a water filling station at
the Jr./Sr. High School.
• Identify students with weight issues as “at
risk”.
JOINT WARREN COUNTY BOARD MEETING:
Superintendent Galvin related to the Board that
the joint Warren County board meeting will be
held on January 19th at 6:30 PM in Indianola if
any board members are interested in attending.

PERSONNEL CHANGES: Superintendent Galvin recommended approving the resignation of
Carol Roland, Daycare Associate; and approving
the supplemental appointments of Wesley Creason, Assistant JH Wrestling Coach and Volunteer
Assistant HS Wrestling Coach. Motion by Jennifer Mihalovich, seconded by Larrie Williams to
approve the personnel changes as presented.

START DATE WAIVER REQUEST RESOLUTION: Superintendent Galvin recommended
approving the Start Date Waiver Request Resolution to request permission from the Department
of Education to start school before the week in
which September 1st falls, with the understanding that the resolution may need to be modified
after guidance is received from the state. The
Calendar Committee will be meeting in a couple
of weeks to draft the 2015-16 school calendar.

Request Resolution. Ayes: 4.
STUDENT TEACHING AGREEMENT WITH
SIMPSON COLLEGE: Superintendent Galvin
recommended approving the student teaching
agreement with Simpson College. Motion by

WIRE TRANSFER AGREEMENT WITH PEO-
PLES BANK: Superintendent Galvin recommended approving the Wire Transfer Agreement
with Peoples Bank. The agreement allows the
District to electronically wire the 403b payments
to Voya. Motion by Larrie Williams, seconded by
Jennifer Mihalovich to approve the Wire Transfer
Agreement with Peoples Bank. Ayes: 4.
BOARD POLICY SECTIONS 400 AND 406:
The Board reviewed Board Policy Sections 400,
“Statement of Guiding Principles”, and 406,

The Southeast Warren Board of Education met
in special session January 15, 2015 in the media
center of the Junior/Senior High School building. Board Vice President Bruce Williams called
the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. The following
board members were present: Jennifer Mihalovich and Larrie Williams. Rande Seuferer joined
the meeting by speaker phone. Ron Miller arrived at 5:34 p.m. Superintendent/Secondary
Principal Delane Galvin and Board Secretary
Julie Wilson were also in attendance.
AGENDA: Motion by Jennifer Mihalovich, seconded by Larrie Williams to approve the agenda.

APPROVE NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING ON
PROPOSED PLAN, SPECIFICATIONS, FORM
OF CONTRACT AND ESTIMATE OF COST
FOR THE DAYCARE BUILDING AND FOR THE
TAKING OF BIDS THEREFORE AND AUTHORIZE THE NOTICE TO BE PUBLISHED AS PER
CODE OF IOWA TIMELINES: Dan Hunt, from
Connect Architecture & Design, presented the
proposed daycare floor plans and asked for input from the Board on the specifications. Dan
projected a total cost of $500,000 to complete
the project. The consensus of the Board was to
receive bids at 4:00 p.m. on February 24th and to
hold a special meeting on the same day at 5:30
p.m. for the hearing and to award the contract for
the project. Motion by Larrie Williams, seconded
by Bruce Williams to approve the notice of public
hearing on the proposed plans, specifications,
form of contract and estimate of cost for the daycare building and for the taking of bids therefore
and authorize the notice to be published as per
Code of Iowa timelines. Ayes: 4. Rande Seuferer was absent from the vote.
